We had a great experience so I had to share. Daddy/Daughter date night so I took my two young girls ( 7 and 10 ). None of us are very experienced. Ive been to this gym but its been a few years so I was rusty. The entire front desk staff was really helpful. They helped us get our waivers filled out and then did a very useful re-orientation with us on the harness knot and new bolle devices. They made sure we were all comfortable and doing our safety checks right and then turned us loose. We climbed for two hours and had a blast. Without the helpful staff at the front desk we would have been lost or discouraged. So good job Mesa Rim team! And we will be back. Both of my girls are stoked and ready to get a membership now. Thank you!

I cannot recommend Mesa Rim enough! The staff is the most friendly, accommodating, and interesting people. The community is friendly, inclusive, and supportive. The route setting is excellent and diverse. The facilities are spot on. Mesa Rim management actually cares as seen by the suggestion board regularly followed through on. Ive only been a member at Mesa Rim in San Diego but its the best gym Ive been a member of from any other city. The price is well worth it, especially if you take advantage of the classes, courses, and additional facilities.

Ive climbed for about 5 years now and my home gym was Solid Rock (for those who remember it) but it is now Vertical Hold. Solid rock was a very chill gym with awesome routes, cool staff, and friendly fellow climbers. It would get busier during after-work hours, but you still had plenty of breathing room.Going from here to mesa rim is a complete 180.Mesa rim is the complete opposite. Its very pretentious and uppity. The routes are great and still challenging, but the atmosphere and people ruin it for me. Some of the staff are nice, but some are very rude and condescending, it is pretty 50/50 who you interact with. The gym is PACKED. I mean PACKED. Unless you go early in the morning, the crowd is huge and you have to fight and wait for routes (both bouldering and top ropes).Beware they are very strict on just their top rope test. I got certified there about 4 years ago, but this was my boyfriends first time and he failed due to the double brake hand (which they refused to show him without buying lessons AND wouldnt let me show him due to rules against instruction within the gym from non-employees).You cant retest the same day! So youre stuck bouldering..... Sucks because day passes are pretty steep.Mesa rim has more to it all-around gym wise (equipment, weights, locker rooms, etc.) but honestly its just not worth the crowds, prices, and overall atmosphere.

I read some of the bad reviews on here and wonder what those customers are talking about? I have been coming to Mesa Rim for a year and a half and I am more than happy with the staff, customer service, and gym. The prices are totally fair for what you get here and you get QUALITY. They have a full training facility with an awesome yoga studio, amazing ropes and an outstanding bouldering area. The kids camp there looks awesome and all the kids look like they are having fun. Ive also seen kids camps brought here by other groups, parties and what not and the kids are having fun. Ive also seen unattended children brought by outside parties running through the facility when there could be danger and its on the guardians of these kids to watch over them. I have found myself telling kids to be careful as they run under someone on the bouldering wall that could fall on them and seriously hurt them. I think if you are bringing children to the climbing gym in a group, you need to clearly explain conduct to them and keep watch over them. It is not fair to blame the staff for your shortcomings. The gym can be a very safe place to bring your kids but they should be well behaved and should be respectful of the other climbers there. Mesa rim prides itself on being a family-friendly facility and they really are. Mesa rim provides a warm and positive environment for climbers of all levels and all ages.

Really nice route setting and a lot of variety. The old sections can feel very crowded in the evenings, i dont think the layout can handle the popularity of the gym. On the plus side the cramped layout allows for a bunch of routes and boulder problems so it is what it is. You can always wear headphones and no deodorant if you want to be left alone :). The new bouldering area is super nice and adds a lot of climbing opportunities.

I purchased 10 punch pass from this gym. Due to COVID-19, the gym was closed. Since I will permanently leave U.S in three months, I asked if I can get refund for my pass. Btw, my pass still have 10 times remaining entrances. The gym said I cannot get the refund because I bought the pass before COVID-19. Whether or not I bought the pass before COVID-19, I cannot now use the pass anyway. Even though I explained my situation about leaving US, they just keep saying they cannot do refund of my pass. They didn’t mention the return policy when I purchased my pass. I also tried to find their return policy, but I couldn’t.

I’m a ten-pass participant. Was introduced by a friend who climbs here and have also brought my daughter and her friend who now have memberships. Friendly, helpful staff. If you read the review below, they had a bad experience. I must say that I totally support the staff position on the test. My daughter didn’t pass the test the first time because she had a clip facing the wrong way. Having a higher standard makes sense. In an actual climb, you need to be absolutely sure you’re safe. An accident is just too high a price to pay for staff casually passing people. I want to know that those climbing nearby know what they’re doing too. Having been to other places and cringing at their practices makes the rules at Mesa so enlightened.Lots of facilities upstairs, including study space, gym. Downstairs there’s sauna, amply-spaced changing rooms and showers. The yoga room is amazing and I’m looking forward to trying it though I typically go to a master class with Colin Wolpert at CYoga. Restrooms are clean and bright, unlike some other climbing places in town who shall remain unnamed here (ahem!)

The good, the gyms setups are nice, they set fairly close to outside grades and reset routes frequently. Most setters forgo feet for bouldering routes so expect a fair amount of foot cutting and warm-up your tendons. So for the bad, the gyms is incredibly crowded. The staff lacks outside experience which translates in your staff interactions. I visited the gym with a friend and took the lead test to rope up.Full disclosure, we both failed! Why? We did not have both hands actively enough on the brake line while lead belaying. We asked the staff member to demonstrate as we were curious how he planned to feed rope belaying as such and the staff member loaded his belay device backwards, got flustered when this was pointed out, and then effectively ran away saying we could test again next time not yet understanding the difference between lead and top rope belaying. His parting words Im sure yoll both pass next time. You seem very competent. (Thanks! Isnt that what the test we failed was for?)

Ive been going to Mesa Rim for some time now and have been really enjoying my time there. The gym is always super clean and has tons of perks such as:* bouldering* top rope + lead* yoga* gym* free wifi* ping pong* foosball* recreation area* probably a few more Im missingThe routes are really well set and they have stuff for all skill levels (VB/0-V12+, 5.3-5.14+).I also spent some time at Vertical Hold and some comparisons Ive seen are:* Mesa Rim seems to change the routes more frequently and consistently* Mesa Rim has full-floor mats compared to rocks with movable mats at Vertical Hold* Mesa Rim seems cleaner/more well maintained* Vertical Hold is definitely a lot less busy than Mesa Rim during peak hours (usually after work on weekdays)* Vertical Hold has more beginner friendly routes if you are just starting out* One factor might be where all the locations are for each gym

Get you kids started young they will learn to over come fears, and challenges. Its Awesome!

Mesa Rim has lost my business. I brought a group of over 25 campers to their facility for an entire week, and upon arriving I asked if they needed an extra belayer, because I boulder regularly and was willing to help. All I needed was a two minute refresher on the figure 8 knot-they wanted to charge me $8 for a lesson! Not only that, the three individual team members I interacted with concerning this incident were borderline combative. I felt like they were treating me like I was the rude one for offering to help them.As one of five other counselors, I was not permitted to climb. Management didnt exactly refuse to allow me to scale one auto-belay to take a picture of campers climbing (I own a harness and shoes), rather I was rigidly informed that I would have to pay the $15 day pass fee to do so. After bringing them great business, they were ignorant enough to tell us to pay for our own passes to climb with the campers that we were bringing to their establishment. I am appalled at how poorly this business is being run-it doesnt make logical sense to be so inflexible with their climbing passes. We werent eating product or making waste, we were simply entering the premises and hoping to show our campers that climbing on the harnesses wasnt as scary as it seemed. The walls already exist. Letting five adults positively impact potential young climbers shouldnt be such an ordeal to achieve. Our second to last day at this facility, the kids wanted to buy products from the store; hats, stickers and shirts. One of my campers was two cents short buying a sticker, which is technically free advertising, and management was disgustingly cold and unforgiving. A fellow counselor paid the two pennies and my camper was satisfied, but Im still appalled. There seems to be no sense of community and trust here, which is the antithesis of the climbing community that Ive experienced so far.Because we were not permitted to climb with the kids, us counselors sat around for the climbing sessions and observed. After two days of boredom, management told us that we needed to be more involved with the kids and supervise them better-essentially, they wanted us to do the job that they had been paid to do for a week. So we now had to intently supervise, but refrain from touching the walls. I think that if they needed extra hands on deck, they should have harnessed us in and allowed us to climb, instead of scolding our terrible leadership skills and pushing us to do Mesa Rims job. I paid the $15 for a day pass once, and as I climbed on the auto-belay, at least 10 kids were watching, excited that one of their counselors was participating with them. After that, they were even more engaged, working on problems, asking about different routes and hold types, etc.Employees at Mesa Rim are pompous and Holier than thou, with a few exceptions. I was ready to get a membership at the end of my week with the kids, because Im moving and this gym is closer to my new residence, but after the awful treatment Ive received here, there is no way that anyone could bring me back. I am certainly recommending that others not frequent this establishment, and Ill be bringing my business and hard earned money to a gym that doesnt make me feel like Ive done something wrong by loving to rock climb. The facilities are amazing and top tier, but the employees and overall business model are laughable. Prices are way too high for the amenities, and I noticed a theft issue in the Womens Locker room.If you enjoy being treated well and trusted by a business, do not spend your money here. I certainly never will again.

I went to Mesa Rim a couple years ago and the experience wasnt great. I went with a group, and I admit that I am not the best at knots, but I tried to learn. The employee briefly taught us the figure 8 knot and expected us all to understand it right away. When I failed to perform the knot, the employee made fun of me and asked why I couldnt get it after watching my group mates do the knot. Sorry, but I learn better by doing rather than by watching. The guy wouldnt let me try again, and instead he made my only options to either wait for a private lesson and pay for it while the rest of my friends were free to climb, or to just stick to the bouldering wall. The experience was discouraging and embarrassing. I stuck to the bouldering wall, but really I should have left because the guy was a jerk and I shouldnt have given them any money to begin with. Im not going there again, and I tell everyone who inquires about rock climbing gyms in San Diego about my experience there. I recommend them to a climbing gym where the employees are nice and the knot is not mandatory.

I had memberships at both Boulderdash climbing gym and Golds Simi Valley and needed a gym membership in San Diego now that I was moving. Heres the deal: this gym is OK but it has a lot of room to improve. On the plus side: they charge average rates from day passes to memberships, and they have two locations, but this is the older location and it suffers for age and outdated design/walls.The negatives are primarily caused by overcrowding: theres NEVER enough parking, it can be difficult to get a route you want, the locker rooms are cramped and dirty, and several times a week a calesthenics class takes over the weight room, pushing out other paying members. This might be the best gym chain in San Diego but that says more about the lack of competition than the quality of Mesa Rim. If Sender One or Touchstone came down here, Id switch faster than you could blink.

This really should be 2.5 stars - but half stars are not an option. The good: The staff are very friendly. Lots of smiles. Very helpful. The walls are tall - I believe the tallest inside walls in SD.The bad: I have never come across a gym that is this crowded. It is insane. I climb at the Mira Mesa gym, after work every rope is taken and there are easily 60+ people in the bouldering area. Around 8:45pm there are still 25 to 30 people in the bouldering area. They start clearing out around 9:15. You are a sardine! The routes are geared more towards competition and not outdoor climbing (new school vs. old school). Way, way too many new school routes. Not enough old school, mimic the outdoor routes. Im guessing the setters dont have much outdoor experience. There are way too many bouldering routes where the end move is awkward feet, lunge, grab hold of the top of the wall. Im like, come on man! add some variety to the end move. They do not have auto belays. I was told that once upon a time they did, but then someone fell off of one cus they didnt attach themself to the auto below. OK, if someone wants to free climb inside cant they just pick any old section of the wall. ADD SOME AUTO BELAYS. They do have a sign up sheet for people looking for belay partners. Most of the time (over 1/2 no one responds). And a few times, I was like - how the hell did you pass the belay test dude? And then there is the lead test . . . everyone fails at least once, if not multiple times. Sharma, ondra and Honnold could all walk in and take the lead test and the tester would play Oprah Winfrey - You fail! You Fail! All yall people fail! They have one style of lead belaying, and I disagree with the safety of some of their protocols - namely, I want to be able to see my climber. They force you to stand under the wall and not see your climbing partner. And you cant hear your partner either - go back to the crowds, it is wicked loud in there. So there is no way to communicate with your climbing partner. Once you reach the top you are supposed to use mental telepathy to tell your partner you would like to come down.
