Friendly staff even to eccentric middle aged people like me. :) Great climbing gym to bring the kids to as they are included in membership until they are 11. Love all the different climbing options although I stick to the “easy” ones for now. Yoga offering is really good and worth checking out as well. I was super impressed with the classes. Looking forward to the climbing classes that are included as well. Flexibility of having 3 different locations in San Diego is a huge plus, so def worth the price of membership. Cheers and climb on!

I love this place. The staff is kind and friendly and the facilities are always clean. They regularly change the routes and problems which means that you never get bored. I also feel that they do all they can to support their community, which is made up of people from all backgrounds and abilities. Ive never been in a more inclusive, welcoming climbing gym than Mesa Rim.

5 star Facility/setting, 2 star company policies/practices. front facing staff are friendly, but not terribly knowledgeable or observant (a lot of people who climb here dont know what they are doing in terms of etiquette or belaying, and staff rarely notice/intervene). Company owner(s)/management put profits above the health of the community (specifically when it comes to covid precautions). That is of course their prerogative, they are a for-profit company, it is nonetheless disappointing.

Good: Roped walls are tall and they have a huge overhang section.Bad: Setting and cracks arent as good as the Mira Mesa and San Marcos locations. Many of the rope routes do not have draws for leading. Also more crowded than the other locations.

I’ve been a member since they opened this location. They recently put up politically leaning signs which is a huge bummer since it has always been a place focused on climbing and community. I brought it to their attention. I’m happy to change this review but only after the sign goes. I’m not interested in what the “woke” want, just climbing with all people accepting each other’s differences.

Clean, open, and lots of climbing options. Upper level has a toddlers’ area, table tennis, and yoga room with super nice mats. Also a lounge area if you need to wait for Mission Valley traffic to thin out. Friendly staff, though wait lines can get long if anyone in front has a lot of questions.

Love love love it! I have been wanting to join a climbing gym for years and could never justify the cost. However, at Mesa the membership was the cheapest for the facilities. In a membership I need my yoga and gym fix as well. Mesa has everything from yoga mats for free use, belay devices to use and everything is clean.Further, the staff is wonderfully helpful and on top of it. Specifically Kyle who helped me and my friend pick out climbing gear. We practically tried on 30 pairs. Kyle was adamant about the importance of feel and fit. In addition to Kyle helping out with anything I need, Mateo is also super helpful at the front desk and on the climbing floor. Every time I climb I either see Kyle or Mateo helping climbers at the front desks, or observing climber and their climbing etiquette. It’s very reassuring to new climbers such as myself.Overall, this gym is a great place to balance your health goals. A super friendly staff and awesome vibes from climbers, it’s a perfect spot.

This isn’t a terrible gym. The facility itself is very nice. I just don’t appreciate the dominant culture here. Granted, I’ve met some awesome people here and made some friends. But, I’ve noticed that a lot of people here lack etiquette. People hog spaces on the Bouldering wall, hang out in the fall zone, and a lot of people are just unfriendly. It’s very cliquey here, especially with the climbers who climb higher grades. Personally, I think everyone can get along and cooperate, regardless of ability. Maybe that type of culture is more prevalent where I’m from in AZ where people tend to learn to climb outside with mentors. I love the high walls though! Lots of fun leads here. Maybe the poor attitudes here have to do with how crowded it is, which is very! Lately staff has been nice. I used to come here a few years ago and that was a different story then.

This place is great for beginners and the skilled climber. Many different routes and many different styles. My only complaint is the price. But its just slight more expensive than other places in town. I went on a Friday after work and it was packed!! Then about 10pm it was like the complete opposite. Just like any gym, there is a rush that comes in. Plus you can spend hours here and it flys by like you just got there. Some of the holds were loose. Like spinning once you go to grab. Which I guess you can look at two ways, it mimicked a loose rock setting where you would fall to your death, or since there was just so many people climbing, it naturally loosened over time.... but one or two holds on the same run.... I notified an employee and hopefully he got it fixed before the new day.Looking forward to going back.

This place is great. I love it, my wife loves it. The kids love it most of the time (little kids never love anything all the time). In addition to the great climbing walls, this place is a top notch fitness facility and generally cool place to hang out. They even have a ping pong table. It is always clean (except for dust from climbing chalk). The restrooms are kept clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Kids also like to roll around on the large padded areas (just not under climbers). Only minor complaint is parking can be a pain. Quick tip if your a motor cycle rider and going to try climbing, drive a car or catch a ride until you know what your arms are like after climbing. I had so much fun one time climbing, I didnt realize how burt out the muscles that close my hands were. I got on my bike and almost could not pull the clutch in.One other cool thing here is they let the clients rate the climbs. Though this may occasionally lead to some really card climbs for a given rating its still a cool way to do it. They also give you a heads up that they are going to take down a route be putting a slash through the card.

If REI were to create a rock climbing gym, it would look like Mesa Rim (minus the overpriced gear & apparel). From the exterior you begin to imagine what might be inside, sort of like the wonderment of what might be in the big gift underneath the Christmas tree. You enter through large glass doors complimented with rustic accents and red and earthy tones. The layout, while doing a great job to keep the space open, partitions areas for a bouldering room, another for strength training, and highlighted with the climbing gym. When patron volume is high (like it was when I attended) I can see how certain sections might feel a bit cramped, however, you get used to it and everyone subscribes to a laidback, harmonious and supportive mentality. The staff was very welcoming, patient and knowledgeable. The crowd was made up mainly of the 20s-30s age range, though there were some old timers that looked like they had been around the rocks since Carter was in office!Even though I was accompanied by my cousin and two of his young children (boys of 8 & 10), the looks we received by the other patrons were that of encouragement and amusement. It helps we know a thing or two about climbing etiquette, and these kids are total studs. I wouldnt suggest bringing your children in the evenings, unless they are seasoned and respectful of the other climbers. However, during the day, this would be a great place to give your kids a proper challenge! It may be a little on the pricey side if you arent used to climbing, but if this is your thing, a membership for a whole month will cost you less than most nights out on the town or a dinner for two at a good restaurant! All in all, this place impressed immensely and I cant wait to go back with a date or even meet someone there. People here, like the rest of San Diego, are very easy on the eyes too, and thats always a wonderful environment to be in!

I’m not unhappy with the gym itself really - the setting is fine, maybe even good if I weren’t so bothered. The facilities are okay, new but a bit odd: they don’t have towels for their showers, they don’t have a sauna, their floor space isn’t well used, the list goes on.The staff, and to some degree the members and community, are the issue. I walked in on a lazy, uncrowned evening and asked to take a lead test, something that any other gym would normally have done in minutes. The dude sitting at the desk paused, turned and started a conversation with his coworker about who was going on break next, and told me he could “totally do that, but I’ll need a few minutes.” I got set up and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally I walk back over to the desk with him nowhere in sight, and only a single unwillingly staff lingering around. I waited another 10 minutes, gave up, and went off to boulder.Low and behold, as I walk into the bouldering area, there he is starting his warmup, chatting up his gym buddies and neglecting any of his responsibilities. I can deal with staff that clearly don’t enjoy their jobs, but when they’re blatantly negligent to the people that they previously told they’d help.It doesn’t end there though. I start my session and brush the guy off. I’m well into my session by this point, when he finally notices me climbing feet away from him. I’m not sure what was going through his head, but he decides he’s going to offer to let me take the lead test after I’ve been bouldering for an hour. Now at this point I realize that I’m rambling, so let me state my real issue. The point is not that this single case ruined my experience. It’s a broad lack of awareness amongst the staff, and that typical bro attitude throughout the community that makes this gym so unenjoyable to climb at. I want to like this gym for its walls and setting, I want to have a good time climbing here, but I can’t. Take this from someone that actually climbs, not some parent that had a birthday party here or a weekend warrior that came to get hauled up a wall and take selfies. Don’t go here if you care about climbing.

Wow. Im a member of a gym in Seattle and have been to plenty in San Francisco and other cities... but this place takes the cake. my ONLY complaint is that the routes are WAY harder than you rate them... Ive been to 5 different gyms in Washington, the Bay Area, and SoCal and at every gym Ive been to Im ALWAYS a solid 5.10 climber, some places a 5.10a is my cap, at others a 5.10c, but never below that. Here I struggled to do some 5.8s! I think your ratings are a little off.
