I’m sitting in the ER right now, in the same room we’ve been in for the last 10 hours. We’ve encountered many different nurses and doctors, but I’m writing this because of one. Our nurse Laura H. who has been working here for 40 years has been so kind and helpful to us. She has been so sincere with her care and never once gave us the impression that we were hassling her or asking stupid questions! Anyway I wanted to write this so hopefully all of the doctors and colleagues who work with her can give her an extra smile for being so amazing and genuine.

DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE ACTIVELY DYING, AND EVEN THEN TAKE A MINUTE TO WEIGH YOUR OPTIONS. The staff here are professional and I had a very quick experience for a foot injury…but the people who treat you are employees contracted by Pacific Emergency Providers and will charge you an out-of-network rate even if Scripps Mercy is in your network. That double bill was ridiculous, I should’ve gone to urgent care instead. Of course they don’t tell you beforehand.

I sat on a gurney in the ER hallway for nearly 4 hours, and the Psychologist that was “too busy” to see me walked past multiple times hitting on me with his eyes as he passed each time (I didn’t know this was the man we were waiting for because he never took his time to introduce himself to my partner or myself). By 9:45pm my partner and I were exhausted and ready for food. We chatted with three different nurses and let them know of our frustrations, yet each offered an excuse rather than an apology. I was instructed by my partner to go change back into my personal clothes. As I stepped out of the bathroom from changing back into my identity-clothing I saw my partner speaking with the Psychologist finally. The Psychologist called me “dude” with a condescending tone and I replied, “Sir, please don’t call me dude. That’s disrespectful.” This Dr. rolled his eyes at both my partner and I in plain site as he turned and pointed to his nursing assistant standing behind. “Sorry we can’t help you, and sorry you think you’ve waited too long to be seen, but take a look at these hallways.” The Doctor pointed, but unfortunately the hallway where we were standing was empty so his point fell flat. The Doc then stated without cares for our concerns, “feel free to leave if you think that’s best for you, but we think you should stay.” I replied, “You didn’t finish the service we came for, so we will not be signing discharge paperwork since the job was not complete. We will be leaving now.” The Doc did seem to mind as he replied, “So be it. We are now off to surgery.” The Doc made a quick turn and walked away on us. I looked at my partner as he respected me for speaking to the Dr. honestly as we walked out of the hospital hand in hand. This medical facility stripped me as I entered just to sit for hours on a gurney with a breezy backless hospital gown. My partner was my rock as he sat by my side the whole time I waited patiently to be seen. Nursing staff constantly made made my partner stand to move the spare chair he had found to sit beside my gurney and keep me company. Two different doctors approached him and asked if he was my father which is also super disrespectful, but we let that go. This world is so shielded to honesty and love. I wish the medical industry offered love rather than leaching money and happy energy from good hearted people that literally just want help.

Edit: They messed up my wife’s vein…(pic) this is 3 days after… avoid this place people.Terrible. Today it was a first time ever that I’ve been to the ER in USA. I went there with my wife. The place is dirty and I even saw some old blood on the chair and more dirt on others. Way to go with coronavirus going on!… The receptionist in front made very unprofessional comment. So not ok! Then tall male nurse was rude and showed very ignoring like behavior. The “help” they provided on the beginning before found my wife an empty bed was really minimal. They seemed like they didn’t care AT ALL. Beside that my wife heard that the nurses were talking, gossiping about some patients infront of her!!!! This is really crazy. This is clearly a bad place to come with Your emergency. It was just the closest to our home….Edit. The receptionist on the left from the entrance is an angel. Very understanding for my hearing problem, patient and sweet. Didn’t catch the name but she’s blondish and had a pony tail. The security man was very nice and polite too and helped me with the charger. Sadly that’s the only positive things I can say about this place.

I’m giving the ER service only is stars. While the ER medical team was good, the admissions team is TERRIBLE and so is the nurse who does the COVID checks. She kept asking and asking why I needed to go to the ER... well first of all I was sent by my primary care and second of all I had surgery 8 weeks ago and came in for post surgery complications. Then while I was checking myself in, the admissions lady told me to hold on so that she can talk to her parents vet since apparently their dog was getting surgery. Like I’m here for an emergency! Lastly, I was never asked or given a break down of the costs for today’s services.. so no idea what I’m going to be billed with..

This place is a big evidence of how messed up the healthcare system is. My wife works for the government, and we have a good insurance overall. We double-checked with the insurance company to make sure this ER is covered before our visit. After our visit we got a huge bill with line items unpayable by the insurance. Turns out, ER staff and some doctors are contractors that work for Pacific Emergency Providers, and are not employed by the Scripps, hence our insurance doesnt mean anything. While doctors and the staff are doing what they can, nobody in this establishment clarifies what is covered and what is not. They dont even warn you about your insurance before the services are rendered. Oh, if multiple doctors see you on your visit each will bill you separately. We spent hours on the phone to dispute these charges, and their answer was basically we can refund you but we will send you to a collection agency. This is like the scammy auto mechanic shop for human bodies. This is why I will probably die from a disease rather than coming to these type of places until someone in the government with a spine and a heart put a stop to this madness. Until then, make your checks payable to: Greed.

I took a member of my family to the Er and they couldn’t help him because he was honest with the nurses/receptionist about having being positive for covid 3-4 weeks ago. His reason for the visit was another not covid related but he did come out positive to covid 3 to 4 weeks ago like I just explained. What happen is the following he showed up to the Er and told them the reason for his visit than they went onto the covid questions and he told them he was positive 3-4 weeks. Once he told them that they spread away from him like he was contagious (I understand covid is a scary virus going around but what happened with their oath to protect their patients?) and went on to telling him they have no more Covid test and they do not have rooms for covid patients. He said once again I am not here for covid and explain for the third time the purpose of the visit and they told him ok well you can wait we do not know how long. They never took his name, ssn , or any information to identify him or log him into the system to be seen. They just told him to wait outside and I told him lets go they are not going to help you because you have a positive for covid regardless of the fact its been 3 to 4 weeks and they never took at least your name. Anyways I would suggest that anyone that has covid symptoms or knows they are positive and has complications for it or something else but came to be positive for covid not go to the er in this hospital you will be discriminated like my family member was.

I was extremely pleased with my experience at this ER, from the check in process to the moment I was walked out by a nurse. The RN, Resident and Attending Physician ALL sat down with me and took their time to talk to me and explain the process. I didn’t feel like I was just another patient that they were trying to rush out the door. I would definitely recommend this ER to anyone in need of emergency services.

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. I am in utter disgust with the treatment of my fiancé today. They literally treated his pain and discomfort as a joke. The nurses are beyond unprofessional and show absolutely no empathy. The doctor wouldn’t even look him in the face only starred at the tattoos on his arm and took that as a reason to discriminate against him and label him as a patient trying to just get prescribed pain medication. They failed to listen to his concerns or do the testing that he needed. Instead they told him he needs to go to a primary doctor to get the help he needs? What can a primary care doctor do that the hospital can’t? Not to mention we had already been to one before going to the ER, and they advised us to go to the ER immediately because their office could not provide the care he needed. They pick and choose who they will take care of based on income and the insurance you have. DO NOT go to this hospital. They will discriminate against you, they will treat you with the worst care, rarely check up on you, and be rude to you when you are trying to get accurate information and understand what is going on. This hospital only sees dollar signs when people walk in their doors, not people in need. Not to mention, he also has been having a fever on and off and they didn’t even test for COVID or feel that, that symptom was a concern. The final diagnosis they gave him was just normal abdominal pain. LOL since when is pain normal. Scripps needs to be shut down.

The staff was okay. They ignored me about my back spasms because they stopped diagnosing me after they found the kidney stone. This meant I spent hours in the ER in considerable pain despite the morphine. The worst was the billing. I got a $500 surprise bill because the doctors who treated me were not in network. They also refused to negotiate with me (the insurance company already gave them $700). Then after 4 months of trying to negotiate this with them and my insurance they threaten to send me to collections unless I pay the bill, independent of what is going on with the insurance company. If you can go somewhere else.

This place is dangerous for infant kids! I took my 8 month child to this hospital and was shocked how unprofessional service was. It all started at the check in to emergency room. Nurse who was admitting us was trying to use an adult set of tools to take vital signs. After multiple unsuccessful attempts of measuring pulse and oxygen level with the finger probe she finally gave up and went to ask help. She was trying to put infant fit sensors onto my daughters arm and was doing many other violations of all possible admitting procedures. We finally got into the room and we`ve been told that Dr. Cox will be taking care of us. After few minutes I was pretty much sure that this doctor has no clue on how to assess infant patients. She was focused on filling out paperwork instead of working with the patient. her supervisor Dr. Davis decided not to spend a single minute with the patient at all - he was on the phone and could not hang up even for a minute. All interventions that were proposed were highly invasive skipping any less invasive assessments completely. Drug dose was calculated inaccurately and without double check. Because of all that I refused any care and took my daughter to the other hospital. Please stay away from this place

I was told by one employee the check in area had been changed three times in the past 24hours. It seems to me since this was a planned construction that check in would be planned out.Manager came out and spoke with me, she did not seem to be concerned, that check in was not organized, She had quite an attitude. When I was just trying to find out information. But if they are busy this could be a problem.I am not sure when construction started but this was going on late morning, Employees were making faces and rolling eyes.At this point would go to other ER during construction. And Scripps Mercy should get a new Manager of ER.

This review is for my SECOND visit to the ER. (I’m 14 weeks pregnant & I went into the ER for severe nausea, pounding headaches, abdominal pain & being unable to eat.)Now note my FIRST experience at Mercy was one to remember. (Hense why I came back) I had an amazing nurse who did everything she could to make me feel at ease and comfortable. She was very lighthearted and even told me if I returned to ask for her. She described herself as the red-headed Bronx version of I Love Lucy. An experience I will never forget ♥️ My doctor as well was very warm and friendly, she made sure I was comfortable and felt better before discharging me. She took the time to check on me and even stated that Mercy Scripps had a wonderful prenatal and delivery service. She recommended that I should inquire about finding doctor @ScrippsMercy and come back and have my baby with Them...So this Second Experience came as a COMPLETE disappointment and definitely shined the hospital in a HORRIFIC light...My check in experience was VERY nice and courteous (as it was the first time I went), very quick process getting me in and situated in a room in the E section of the hospital. When I got to my room I was helped by a nurse who seemed uninterested in doing her job. Did not even try to make me comfortable. Sadly ANOTHER nurse inquired if I needed a blanket as she seen I was shaking from the cold, since I’m a very petite lady. ( Still not the reason for my one star review) I understand that jobs get overwhelming and everyone’s human and gets tired. But I felt this was a background issue...when you see someone bright and bubbly with other patients and co-workers and the second they speak to you it’s like death has covered the room corner to corner...(still not my issue for one star) I’m sadly used to this.BUT what I did not appreciate in the slightest was DOCTOR JON KEITH LUDWING’s subliminal rudeness and treatment I was given...First off he did not seem the LEAST bit interested what I had to say. He was very short and slightly condescending with the way he spoke to me. After I explained to him I was here previously for the same issue as before, he simply said he will administer anti-nausea medicine and exited the room. I was given an IV for dehydration, dextrose and Benadryl.Secondly, the nurse (who was very uninterested In servicing me) came back and administered my medication thru my IV tube. When she gave me the dextrose I alerted her that it burned and I felt it up my entire arm and it hurt me. She said nothing and continued to push the medicine they the IV but very quickly as it hurt and burned even more. Afterwards she simply stated “I’ll be fine”. (It’s been a few days since then and my arm has not healed or been the same. It hurts when I bend it for two long and sharp pains.)Sadly and Lastly, after about 2hours with no one checking in on me the doctor returned. I asked to have an ultrasound to check on my baby to see if everything was ok and he seemed annoyed that I even asked! After all my testing was done (about an hour later) I received the ultrasound which lasted less than 3 mins total. I explained to him I still had a splitting headache and wasn’t sure what to do about my sleep/eating issue. He then told me to go to a hospital that was more for “people like me” which he says he meant “for navy spouses @ balboa hospital” that left a sour taste in my mouth... and proceeded to discharge me.I left still with a splitting headache, and upset by the way I was treated.
