I normally don’t do reviews however, I would like to say that Balboa ER staff are amazing. I have gone in a couple of times and they are always so caring and calm. Despite the times they were very busy, they still made sure to take care of my family and I. ER’s are known to be busy and have long waits, that’s inevitable. Most of these reviews are quite the opposite of my experiences at this facility.

I can see why people give the bad reviews. They take hours to have you checked in a room. The last two times I was at the ER I waited 2 & 4hrs. It is ridiculous what you have to wait BUT I will say the medical staff is very helpful once you are inside. I had a procedure done for stones the same day I went into the E.R and now I’m in no pain at all and no more stones Thank you so much 🙏

I went into the emergency room for a fairly rare reaction from the covid vaccine. This reaction is called delayed skin reaction I went in with a rash that was burning and itching. I spent 4 hours waiting in the triage room for someone to at least come check on me. I had already been check in and had my vitals taken and I was called back to be seen. I STILL WAITED 4 HOURS. When the nurse finally had the time of day to come see me. She told me what was going on didnt make sence and didnt look normal. She said I was fine and gave me an anti-itch cream. There was no explanation as to what it could be and there was no referral to an actual doctor. When I received my discharge papers 3 of the 4 things in the get medical assistance asap section I specifically told the nurse. But because it didnt make sence she payed no mind to what was going on.

1 star to the overall hospital but 5 stars belong to Dr.Curtis & J Woo (nurse) in the Emergency Room. Yes there was some rudeness at the front desk, especially being in pain its just sad. But once I got to the back in a room I was put in the care of Dr.Curtis and J Woo. Im a person that HATES going to the hospital for my own reasons but mainly because now a days most places lack empathy for patients and just assume they are there for meds and your problem isnt that big to them. This was NOT the case on this day. Its been about 2 weeks now .I went in with back/ spine pain and excruciating migraine. J Woo came in with the most pleasant attitude. Immediately went into being very nurturing and understanding of my pain. Dr. Curtis came in not to long after, sat close, looked me in my eyes and sincerely asked how could he help me. He listened I mean REALLY listened to what I was saying and went into lets fix the problem mode. They helped get my pain under control , took xrays, checked on me constantly. Any updates the dr was in my room letting me know everything he knew. I was there for a few hours but didnt feel long because I was in such good care. Unfortunately we couldnt find the root of my pain but I was sent home with meds, and referrals to doctors that could help so I had a follow up plan. I cant thank you both enough for the care you provided. Thank you! They deserve raises.

If I could give negative stars I would, front desk is rude, back office staff have no idea what theyre doing and no one communicates with each other, was given 3 different diagnosis by 3 different people. Was there for 5 hours for my toddler and sent back to the waiting room because they needed a bed for another patient when I was told I cant leave without leaving a sample...mind you it was midnight..with a toddler. Ive never had a pleasant experience there, ever. So this review is long overdue.

I rarely post reviews but I was in the ER last night and I was dreading going after reading a lot of these reviews, but my mind changed as soon as I was admitted. Everyone was very knowledgeable, patient, and caring. The nurses I had were amazing. I definitely wish there was more privacy but of course that was not anyone’s fault that was there. Appreciated my care!

My least favorite ER. Wait time, customer service, quality of care, efficiency, IV administrators (my last three IVs were literally bloody, latest one ruined my clothes), employees in er, at least the ones I encountered didnt care about me, and this happens every time i go there. I expect courtesy and quality care, not asking for friendly health care care. Very contrasting to multiple specialties that nmcsd offers. Extra star, a appreciation for their work.

An xray, a bill, and a sling is what I left with for my dislocated ac joint. Dont you professionals serve a purpose doing what you do?

My husband is retired Navy and we have Tricare prime. Three days before my 60th birthday I fell and fractured and dislocated my hip. I was taken to Sharp Memorial and hours later after much torture was sent to Balboa where the Orthopedic trauma team was waiting for me. If you have a need for being seen at an emergency room with possible surgery in your future dont let them take you to any other hospital! The doctors, nurses, and corpsman were all caring and provided excellent care. Highly recommend Balboa Naval hospital.

DO NOT GO HERE! Waited for hours in pain and staff barely spared me a glance. The only real human contact/care I received was when I had to do an ultrasound and the person transporting me. At one point they must’ve forgotten about me as I was asked to be seated in the wait room for the 3rd time. I had to ask for my doctor to come out and discharge me. Spent over 4hrs there being ignored, crying silently in pain. Would never wish this place on my worse enemy, shame on them

Today Balboa Medical Center confiscated someone I care about cell phone and answered it on his behalf. After he was admitted to this hospital for high blood pressure due to an oncoming anxiety attack. His command refused to let him go on his own and forced him into a car with someone he did not know that left him at the hospital with no car. Once there, he tried to put his cell phone under his leg when an incoming call from me came in and was taken out of his hands and answered without permission. This is not only a violation of his rights, this added to the stress of not being able to contact him throughout the day. At the end of all of this, we were not given the name of the person who did this and I was forced to pick him up on the side of the road after leaving this place. Just to make sure you know how serious this was, his blood pressure was at 113, with no car, not being allowed to contact me, and when I finally did make contact it was from someone who unlawfully stole and answered his cell phone without his permission. Has this happened to anyone who has been to Balboa Naval Medical Center before?

Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I believe anyone can have a bad night. But I have been here on three separate occasions where quality patient care was no where to be found in the front if the ER.1. I had a thyroid mass results sat in an email 30 days where finally the radiology commander was asking the ER doc to contact me. When they realized the mistake they started calling at 9pm one night! Turns out the mass had been found on a CT scan over a year ago but it was never mentioned to me.2. Ive had a triage nurse ask why I brought my daughter in for sudden pain and hearing loss!? Are you kidding me?! They should know the faster the treatment for sudden onset of hearing loss the better the outcome! That same triage nurse asked an elderly gentleman why he would come in the early hours to be seen? Do your job! Stop treating people like their feelings dont matter.3. Tonight I have been sitting here 4.5 hours with my daughter who is complaining of blurred vision, has visible swelling in her neck and she can not move her head without extreme pain in her head. Im going to followup with patient relations. We wont be coming back unless we have no other choice. Thank goodness for dual insurance plans.***Treat your patients better Balboa Naval Hospital ER***Update: After asking the front staff to review how my daughter was triaged ( Ive worked ER so I understand) we were in fact the last left from a full ER. After politely saying we could just leave if they were unable to render care. The guy said please wait. She was called next. The staff in the main ER treated us very nice but ultimately were students. She is now being treated by Sharp. It was in fact an issue that should have been handled with more urgency then how she was triaged.

Have been there on multiple occasions and everytime I get looked at with a smile and a shoulder shrug like Sorry cant help you. They always tell me to go back to my ship and get help even after telling them I went to my ships medical (which is garbage) multiple times and would like to receive some decent medical attention for once.

This is the worst place to go for medical help, your job there is to take care and treat patients this is your job! I really think they not manned by DOD personnel but rather contracted out to the lowest bidder the ones that regular hospitals will not hire.

I brought my husband in who was actively throwing up blood. We had people ahead of us who even stepped aside to let us check in before them but workers casually waited to check my husband in. They told my husband to wait in the waiting room as if throwing up blood wasnt a big deal. Ive seen them bring someone back immediately with less. When one of them finally wheeled him back, they made snarky comments toward me as if I shouldnt be upset about the situation. Im grateful that I can see civilian docs but unfortunately my husband doesnt have much choice.I also heard someone next to our room throwing up his guts. From what I heard, they hadnt properly diagnosed his appendicitis in earlier days and by that time his appendix had burst. They told him they couldnt even do surgery on him. They really talked like it wasnt anything serious. I hope that man is okay.
