Where to start. I have been a patient here for a little over 2 weeks. I am 69 yrs old and in full command of my faculties. I am here to get physical therapy following hip surgery for an infection. First thing that became apparent was the food. It was unappetizing to the point of being nauseating. My first meal here was some kind of gray meat with gray sauce, and watery, horribly overcooked vegetables. Some meals were almost good but most were lacking in any kind of appeal at all. I was given medication that should have been held because my blood pressure was low. I developed extremely low blood pressure to the point where they were concerned about me even living. I recovered from that. I was given IVs three times a day with antibiotics. The IV had two parts and they had to be mixed together before they were infused. One nurse didnt even know what to do with the bag and just hung it and set it up to run into me. I stopped her and asked her to go get a nurse from another unit. When they both came back I said dont you know how to mix the IV? Neither one of them did. This is my life were talking about! Although many of the staff are friendly and chatty, they are not very reliable. If I asked for something when they came to my room they would leave and I would never hear back from them unless I kept putting my call light on. They would just say oh sorry I got busy. Im sorry to say this but I feel like this place needs to be shut down and completely restaffed and retrained, nursing staff all the way down to dietary. Who knows how many patients have died here because poor care, and of course they can always say well they were elderly, so . . .

My grandma lives here and has since 2015 when she went through rehab here for a broken hip. Once recovered, she wanted to stay. Grandma says her quality of life is good and shes made new friends among the other residents and caregivers. The staff are wonderful, responsive, and caring. There are a lot of activities for residents and they seem to have a lot of fun. Spending time at the Bluffs has made me realize that not all nursing facilities are awful.

If I could give this place 0/5 stars, I would. HORRIBLE treatment and very inconsiderate of their patients. My grandmother stayed at The Bluffs for rehabilitation for 6 days. During only 6 days, I can count multiple instances where The Bluffs did not do their job correctly, let alone meet the normal standards of a Rehabilitation/Retirement facility. For one, The Bluffs gave her SOMEONE ELSES MEDICATION when they discharged my grandmother. Other instances include; losing several articles of her clothing, no fresh water in her suite (only gave her fresh ice water TWICE in the span of 6 days), her meals were wrong when she would order them, was told to just “eat it” when she informed the staff that her order was wrong. Also, she had to prepay for 8 DAYS upfront, when she only ended up staying 6 days. I would not recommend this place to anyone, save yourself and go somewhere else. Your family deserves better treatment than The Bluffs has to offer.

A family member was there previously for a short stay and did not receive proper or decent care. Entirely separate from that, an employee was taking patients pain medication, leaving them suffering needlessly. We will certainly not be going back or recommending to others.

My mother was at The Bluffs for 5-6 years. She was wheelchair bound, and one day when they were pushing her to the lunch table, she fell out of her wheelchair, because she was not belted in. She broke her glasses, blacked her eye, and had several bruises on her face. They took her to Boone County Hospital, where they gave her a cat scan to see if she had any head injuries. They found none. Several days later, they noticed a sore on the inside of her right knee and thought it was a boil. They treated it as a boil for 7-10 days and one Sunday morning they called and said that the leg bone was pushing through the skin in the spot they thought was the boil. She was taken back to Boone County Hospital and she had sustained a compound fracture of the right leg. So either this happened when she fell out of the wheelchair or they had dropped her at sometime later and had failed to notify us. We were told by someone who used to work there that the crane they used to put her on the commode was not the correct one. As it happens with most compound fractures, infection is highly possible. She sustained an infection and was kept in Boone County Hospital for as long as they could keep her and then was transferred to an intermediate care facility where she passed a few days later.

I found the home to be clean and bright. Every resident I came into contact with was cheerful and loved their home and the staff. The aides didnt have the attitude of Please, I dont want to be bothered. they where most helpful at locating things or to just stop and chat. The Administrator is young but savvy to the business world and also has a keen eye as to what the elder population needs and wants. One of those wants is to feel full. LOL! So I will compliment the Dietary Staff. The food is Fabuloso. Last but not least let us not forget the housekeeping and laundry crew. They were always on top of everything. From cleaning the dirtiest areas to making sure that linens were ready to go so beds were open for the next patient to come in. I love the place and when the time comes I want to make The Bluffs my home.

Many things wrong with this place. First the food. As a person that has 26 years in the culinary industry, 12 of those as an executive chef or sous chef, I have never seen food this poorly handled. I have ran many local places such as University club, Flat Branch, Boone Landing, and Lenoir. I would be ashamed to send out food like this. My grandmother (who I took care of for 2 years prior to this injury weighed a stable 105 pounds, she lost 12 here because she could not eat the food. She usually gets dry salads, and when they do apply dressing it is to cover the brown slimy lettuce. Nursing staff is not much better at times, she asked to use the bathroom, to which they said arent you wearing a diaper...and left the room. No bathing for the first 2-3 weeks she was there. I was there 6 days a week and every evening when I went to her room, her roll table had food, crumbs and misc from lunch (this was at 4:10+ pm. No one wipes her table in her room, no one clears the food). I understand they are short on kitchen help, however, at some point this was unacceptable. There are a few decent people here though. people who actually care here, unfortunately they are few and far between. The PT staff is good, the social worker is pleasant and accommodating, just do not rely on anyone else. Now she has bedsores. Ok, I understand this is a possibility with limited mobility, but keep in mind I have been dealing with this for 2 years prior. Not one bed sore or anything. It is sad that you can not get a decent nutritional meal (The elderly need this as much as children). Does not seem to have a registered dietitian on staff, nor an actual chef or FSM that knows what they are doing. It is a train wreck, they can not keep help, many times I saw the families of loved ones working because there was no one else. Just dont.

My father was placed here for his 20 day Rehab stay. The facility is nice. Housekeeping did its job. Maintainance did its job. The food was satisfactory and he enjoyed his dining experiences. Office staff always very friendly and helpful. Laundry services take 1 week to get laundry back (or so we were told) so we opted to do it ourselves. The important stuff - his medical care, was a huge concern. Every question we had about his care, we were either told that my father wasnt telling the truth and the question was invalid, or that they didnt know as they werent on when the issue arose and there were no notes in the chart about it. He didnt get all his medications and PRN medications he didnt request were gone even tho not used. We didnt have a choice where to place my father. They were the only place with an opening at the time, however, if you do choose this place, at least for Rehab stay, make sure you visit every day, and stay on them. We are still trying to get my dads health back to what it should have been when he left. Question everything, and visit on multiple shifts if you want to make sure your loved one is being taken care of. And if they blow you off as not in notes, or the patient lying, dont accept it.

Im very disappointed in this location. The bathroom sink has been stopped up, off and on for 2 days. My mother is a vegetarian and was served a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch today. she was unable to not only get a warm blanket but any blanket at all extra last night and the air conditioning unit was left on as was her cooling pad that was left with the ice cord down her leg. At 11 this morning she was still complaining of being freezing cold.I am unsure about what to do at this point as there doesnt appear to be any other openings, anywhere else. She is complaining about living in hell and only wanting to be out of there. All of this in the last 24 hours is really exhausting.
