My beloved Mom spent 8 weeks in the memory care side of this facility in the Fall of 2020. While the current pandemic heightened our negative experience, the ethical and legal implications of our story need to be brought to the attention of the public. Management was very friendly and helpful in the beginning but things soon went downhill when I attempted to share my concerns as a nurse and daughter that my mom had untreated hypertension and worsening depression. Staff deliberately hung up on me on more than one occasion. When my mom expressed to me that she had contemplated suicide, instead of reassuring me, they threatened to ban me from the property without legal justification. Not only was my mom placed and held in the facility using an POA document that did not contain her signature, her advance directives were changed to a Do Not Resuscitate Order without her authorization or her children’s knowledge. She furthermore daily stated she felt “trapped” and alone in that residents could not even carry on a normal conversation. Her room had a large crack in the ceiling and she also stated the food was not very nutritious. We had to send in fresh fruit, healthy snacks and gummy supplements. We also had to make a special request to ensure she got coffee in the morning. When all window visitation was temporarily suspended due to a positive COVID case within the facility, all visitation was suspended and we were not even allowed to visit through her room window. Now management is refusing to talk to us and our attorney regarding our concerns about POA abuses carried out by my stepdad and stepbrother. Please don’t let a seemingly sweet sales manager and the nice exterior and surroundings deceive you! Facilities like this have a responsibility to ensure vulnerable individuals are not victims of POA abuses. It should be a major red flag when immediate family is deliberately banned without merit from knowing what is medically going on with their parent by a stepparent who is no longer overseeing care or staying in touch with their spouse. The moral and legal issues surrounding our experience has been very unnerving!Update - My family and our attorney reached out to HarborChase in Columbia after we saw their online response to our google review. Unfortunately this response was not sincere in that management never replied to our communications after this nor have they complied with a subpoena for additional records and answers. Therefore we plan to file a complaint with SCDHEC and are contemplating additional legal action.

This was a very caring and well-maintained assisted living. not only the caregivers, but the dietary, housekeeping, nurse, administration, and maintenance all new residents names were very friendly with them and on occasions would sit down and talk with them. we could not have been more pleased with our stay there for my mother. I am a nurse of 47 years, so I had a critical eye and if there was ever an issue, everyone was always very quick to fix it. I would recommend this to anyone friends or just acquaintances.

This place is terrible and neglects the needs of the elderly... Do not bring your loved ones here unless you want them to suffer. This place needs to be shut down. I will do everything in my power to get this place closed.
