I recently needed a referral for sleep study to be done. They called me and told me they had sent the referral over. I scheduled the appointment. When I arrived for the appointment I was informed NYU Langone never received the referral. This is the SECOND time this has happened. Last time I saw the doc anywya and now owe NYU a grand. So I never got my sleep study done yet, and had to push it out a month and half since they are backlogged.I wouldnt trust these folks with anything. Their org is disorganized and not able to keep up with the scale they attempt to operate on.3 cheers for not being able to do even the basics the right!

Overall CL was OK, theyre Dental Dept has always been… just bad. After pandemic Dental really took a turn for the worst.I called (August 2020) several times to schedule an appt with a dentist though the latter part of 2020 & was told that theyve been working on “Covid Proofing” the entire dental dept & that it should be completed by the end of the year. I was informed that emergency appts were always available. In Jan of 2021 I had a emergency. A filling this office had previously done on me was causing discomfort. I stopped by to make my appt on person and or hopefully be seen by the dentist, just to be handed a few sheets stapled together with many dentists numbers. (They were still “Covid Proofing” theyre dental dept at this time) lol ok.I was contacted a day later by the dental and was asked if i wanted to schedule a virtual appt.I realize there are many challenges now, covid, safety , the work place etc .I dunno , this sounds like we might need an entirely new dental team starting with management. Dental offices across the city are open for business & seeing clients. Why is CLlagging so much?Particularly it serves a community that counts on the services Callen Lorde provides.

The level of comfort and genuine concern and care received by the staff and Dr. Cantor is truly priceless. As a gay man it’s a blessing to have a doctor I’m comfortable with.

I have to deal with massive incompetence from staff nearly every time I go here, whether it’s losing lab results, forgetting to actually complete check-in, being misgendered to my face while at a trans healthcare clinic, or failing to send prescriptions in a timely manner to my pharmacy. I’ve been patient throughout the pandemic because I understand that it’s been stressful and there may be staffing difficulties, but I’ve also witnessed staff make fun of patients and disclose private patient medical information while seated in the waiting room.It is infuriating that a medical practice that gets funding to serve a marginalized community treats its patients so indifferently (and even cruelly). I feel like I have to fight with staff to actually get them to listen to me when I try to work through these issues. It’s ironic that they feature a Crisis Helpline so prominently on their webpage because you will feel in crisis dealing with this staff.

If I could give this place zero or negative stars, I absolutely would. The lack of communication/patient care that you get from doctors is ridiculous. Getting someone on the phone, or getting a call back is impossible. You will Never be able to call and speak with your doctor. They will schedule an appointment for your doctor to call you a month away. You’re better off going somewhere else.

Dear Callen-Lorde,Please improve your facilities and your health care. Yes, Im transgender and yes I need hormone replacement therapy. You do an adequate job providing that. Getting a prescription filled is a nightmare, requiring several phone calls to confirm my address and credit card information, but eventually I do receive the meds. However, I also need an actual comprehensive primary care check up. It seems like youre so proud of providing LGBTQ health care that you forget that illnesses exists outside of HIV and STDs. Spend more than 5 minutes on your patients. Do more than blood work and the check up I can get at a Walgreens self-serve station. Train your staff to listen to the problems your patients have, instead of ignoring them. Please be better, and if you cant, at least provide us with a list of trans-friendly providers who can. It will lighten your load and let you better serve those who need you.

I am so disappointed to be writing this, because I was referred to this facility by a dear friend.Long story short - Ive been a patient here since Sept 2020 (4 months) and theyve completely messed up two of of my prescription refills, lost one of my labs for testing, incorrectly referred me to two doctors who couldnt help me in an URGENT issue, cancelled urgent in-person appointments with no notice, and completely drop the ball EVERY time Ive dealt with them. How can you help a marginalized community when youre part of the problem? Please, go elsewhere because your life WILL depend on it.

I appreciate the front desk staff because they have always been kind and courteous (no matter what you or the staff is personally going through). I appreciate that their medical and pharmacy services are offered at a low or income based cost. I also appreciated the options they have all provided me. Love this place, been going there for years.I saw a few bad reviews that Id like to address. If you call at a busy time, expect to be on the phone for a long time. They are a very busy place because they help a lot of people, to me, this is understandable. As far as gossiping, just tell a higher up. The only people I know might gossip are the interns or new young volunteers. After being spoken with a couple of times, Im sure theyll stop. Ive only seen a couple of people like that. They were always younger and got fired rather quickly, so dont fret too much :) the doctors are extremely friendly and helpful. As far as pricing and insurance, if you dont have insurance and have no money, everything will be free. Any donations would be greatly appreciated, but are never forced and are rarely, if ever, asked for. The most theyd probably charge you is five dollars for something that should cost hundreds, and even then, its optional (from what I understand). Ive never been charged once. Its a very welcoming and friendly environment. So, dont be scared to give it a try. I feel quite comfortable there, even though I have severe social anxiety.

So I call in regularly to see if they have any openings for new patients. One day the girl who Im talking with says theyre accepting new patients for trans care. Im trans. Great. So in order to be a patient there I have to change my insurance and my PCP to one of theirs. Great. I make an appointment with one of their insurance navigators, go in, have my insurance changed, wait two month for it to be official, finally get my new insurance card in the mail. Call to make my very first appointment.Oh sorry were not accepting new patients.Oh really? So I wasted three months of my time without medical care, switched my insurance plan (which I cant switch back anytime soon) only to be told they didnt reserve a space for me even though I was going through this process with their help. So now I have no doctor, Ive been left out in the dust, have no idea where to seek specialized care for my transition and someone to manage my hormones. I live in Staten Island so I passed their offer to go to their Bronx location which would be a six hour trip back and forth (and I was told I would be able to be seen at the Chelsea clinic).Really disappointed and depressed now. The one place where I thought I could count on the people there and that they had my back. Things feel as hopeless as ever.

If you want a $330 STD test, where the cost is NOT disclosed to you beforehand, come to Collen-Lorde.They told me the test would cost $50. Then they charged me an extra $100 a couple weeks later. THEN they sent the test to a lab that charged me $180.This cost was also not clearly disclosed. They said they were sending it to a lab, and there may be an extra charge, but made it sound like it would be small. I definitely did not expect it to be $180. And the lab will send you bills in 5 separate envelopes just to make things confusing. This is probably the least transparent - and most expensive - STD clinic Ive ever been to. Seriously, an STD test should cost $50 and is often free in community clinics. Operating a clinic catering to the lower income community and overcharging without being clear about price is borderline unethical.I called and they did offer a refund on the $100, but the lab is still charging me the $180. So overall Ill end up paying $230 for an STD test, which just seems absurd to me. Overall this has been a pretty negative experience.

NOTE: Ive been a patient for 8+ years now, so I am well qualified to give an in depth review of it inside and out, having used almost every service long term (instead of reviewing a single great or bad experience). The medical (NOT DENTAL) services are great, especially if you can get a solid primary care physician. Ive been with Victor Inada since 2008-2009 and he is super thorough and takes your health seriously.Urgent care can be hit or miss here, as they are overwhelmed and understaffed. They try their best though. Probably still better than City MD although City MD will def have immediate openings.+ Usually takes forever to get an appointment at Callen Lorde FYI and phones are swamped.+ Best to make appointments in person.Be cautious of the Dental department.+ Its new and completely separate from medical (dont get a false sense of trust and comfort)+ the staff they are always swamped 1-2 months out so your poor irreplaceable teeth are on a 3rd world time schedule+ Ive given them chances over the past 3 years and I wish I had never done if I had a better dental option.+ Not thorough and they dont focus on preventative care. You need to be proactive about any issues you notice. They fix holes and cavities but if you have any issues outside of that they wont be the first to help you.

Great place for those who have limited funds. Sliding scale helps. If you can afford it, and have insurance, youll get more attention elsewhere. Most of the doctors and other staff are great, but because of the heavy case load you dont tend to get a lot of face time with your doctor. Although most of the health care professionals are great, try to avoid Eddie Meraz. Hes a Nurse Practioner, not a doctor, which is fine. Often times NPs and PAs have more time to spend with patients and are easier to deal with than doctors, but in Eddies case, in my opinion, he is not at all friendly, or professional. In fact, He was one of the most unprofessional health care professionals Ive had the misfortune of coming in contact with. Im sure the case load is difficult at CL, but apparently Eddie just cant handle it. Stick with the other care providers and youll be OK.

DO NOT GO HERE, TERRIBLE SERVICEIve been with Callen lourde off and on since 2009 & must say their Phycologists on 6th floor are rude and unprofessional along with the snooty guy whos in charge of that Dept. Hell yell at you over the phone and be rude but then send you these polite letters. Gross! Dr Victor is a Hack and will tell you to look for another provider if youre not satisfied with his incompetence. Oddly my doctor has no phone number or email address therefore its impossible reaching her and when I try and send her a message through their rude operators they will relay distorted totally different messages if they dont hang up on you. This agency forced me to switch back to them entirely once again simply to be able to retrieve needed referrals from a doctor I have there. Their referrals Dept is a joke and their LGBT staff all seem to have received Obamas surgeries in the transgender Dept but they make you wait over a year just to give out of date appointments to doctors that either no longer practice, to wrong doctors not taking your health insurance and some doctors dont even answer or return calls after 6 months. Callen lourde looks great on paper but has to be the rudest clinic ever and its LGBT which is disappointing. Im at a point that I no longer waste my time in complaining as it gets nowhere, I simply contact their doners and complain with details along with dates, names and the rude experience but also contacting HR in Albany along with NY state health Dept helps a bit. In reality Ive no idea how this clinic has managed to get so much help when it treats their clients very unprofessional but I guess contacting state representatives with documented details could help. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AGENCY IN THE LEAST.

Fortunetly I am much closer now. The staff, altough rotating, is very helpful and friendly for the most part. I have always felt comfortable here and glad that the doctors have experience with people like me. This is very important to me. Its hard to go to a doctor who doesnt have experience with Tg, here I dont need to explain myself I am just accepted and treated like a human being. Its also very nice to have a normal Doctor Check up routine, one less thing to worry about, as with hormones you need to be monitored regularly. As long as you treat this facility for what it is, you should have no problem. This isnt an E.R ward or anything like that. They have added a pharmacy in the facility a few years ago and this helps a lot. The prices are good compared to any other pharmacy Ive been too. Just an example of the price difference.. One of the medications I take is normally around $130 at an outside pharmacy but at CL its $35.. This is great and the sliding scale is helpful as well.Thank you Callen Lorde, you have helped and made my transition as easy a possible. I wouldnt know what to do without you!
