The service was horrible. They provided no updates, did not care at all to do anything in a timely fashion, and we’re incredibly rude when asked when we would be helped. They have no sense of urgency and little intention of helping others, specifically in anywhere near to a timely fashion. We have been here for five hours and counting and they could not care less about providing useful service or not making us wait for hours on end for something that could have been done in less than half the time. Unless sitting in a room alone for countless hours sounds appealing to you, go elsewhere to be helped.

My son was having thoughts of harming himself. He was brought in by EMS. He suffers anxiety and depression. The treatment given to him was terrible. He was put in a padded room for hours. They never evaluated him. I was told he would be evaluated by mobile crisis that never happened. They barely checked on him. The room he was in was filthy. The ER dr seemed to have no concern about his well being. I was called to come pick him up he was discharged no plan to see anyone no treatment. For someone with mental health issues UT is not the place to go.

Worse place I’ve ever been to. I realize everyone is understaffed and stressed but trauma nurse should show a little compassion for a severely injured motorcycle accident victim that was came by ambulance to the ER. He was in severe pain and she said “I’ll get you some Tylenol”. Really?. All his clothes were cut up (even his underwear), and after checking for internal injuries and taking X-rays they said he should start walking around so he can go home. 400 miles from home with no transportation to get there, no clothes, in severe pain. No pain relief and no muscle relaxers. Unbelievable. As soon as I get the trauma nurse’s name I will post it. This wasn’t health care or a medical facility that cares for people. Very unsanitary.

I was seen at the UT Medical Center ER recently for taking a fall while running after being turned away from a minor care facility due to a deep cut on my chin. Everyone from the registration desk, technicians, nurses, and the physician’s assistant that treated me were amazing and I am very thankful for their help and care. My wait time was very reasonable since I had minor injuries, and it’s a good thing if you have to wait at the ER because it means you aren’t the most ill or injured person there! They listened to my concerns and even did x-rays to ensure my jaw and neck were not injured since I hit my head on the pavement. And they were able to quickly patch up my chin and get me on my way. I am thankful for this facility and the care they provided me!

This hospital has no sense of urgency. They do not care what has taken place with you they will literally leave you laying in the floor and walk over you. My son was in an accident with 2 tractor trailers and left him sitting in the waiting room from 10pm till 10am the next morning. The thing that made me the maddest isn’t that they left my son there because we had an opportunity to know that my son was ok and thank God that he made it through a terrible accident. I sat there all night watching an elderly man literally dying because they would not even tend to him. This hospital is a disgrace, I would never send anyone for any reason to this trashy, run down, non urgent, hateful place. I’m pretty sure a trip to hell and back would be more enjoyable.

If I could give zero stars, I would. My elderly Dad was taken here by ambulance after a fall and possible fracture to his neck and knee. The lobby area was completely overrun and without adequate staffing. When I arrived to assist my Dad, I found him slumped over, unattended in a wheelchair, where he had already been waiting for close to four hours. No one had even bothered to give him a simple ice pack for his knee. The room was noisy to the point of making it almost impossible to hear staff or public announcements as they took patients into triage. After waiting close to six hours and as the afternoon faded into night, I began to plead with different staff to have his injuries looked at because there was legitimate concern that he may have re-fractured an earlier spinal break. Although I was polite and calm, I was told different, disingenuous things, just to make me go away. They were so overrun that it looked very likely that my frail, injured Dad would have to sleep, slumped in his wheelchair because there were no beds, no rooms, and no staff to help him as the night went on.Finally, after waiting nearly EIGHT HOURS they got around to doing a CT scan and X-Ray. After an 18-hour ordeal, he was ultimately discharged the next morning without any fractures, but his discharge paperwork excluded any mention of the Drs. who treated him, it incorrectly listed multiple cervical fractures as part of his diagnosis (these were actually from the past), and we were given no follow up contact information for subsequent questions about my Dads imaging and test results. In fact, the paperwork we were handed included a bloody bandage stuck between the pages. On top of it all, my Dad was still unable to bear weight in his injured leg. So it was up to me and my husband to help load him into our vehicle, unassisted, and without any assistive devices because they dont provide that at this emergency room. Indeed, they never even managed to give him an ice pack for his contusions. Is this really the best level of care that a major medical university facility can provide? My God, it was horrifying.**Do not send any of your loved ones here if you can possibly avoid it.**

My mother Norma was transported by AMBULANCE to UT Medical Center this afternoon. She arrived at approximately 115pm in dire pain from a fall at a vacation home of a family member. My sister and I followed her to the hospital and were separated from her at the ER. We were told by the RN on staff that she would in the AMR (Ambulance) holding area until they were able to move her to an ER rm.We checked patiently ever 30 minutes. Finally after the sixth time, we were told that her blood work had been done and her X-Rays had been ordered (100% fabricationon the part of the receiving RN).. All this time neither my sister or myself were able to see or speak with her. Finally after we said we would like to take her elsewhere for care, the TEAM LDR met us at ER Lobby. We explained that we wanted to transport her to another medical center to which she replied, we have to here it from her or she will not bet going anywhere. My sister entered the ER with thus person , saw my mother and my mother acknowledged that she would like to leave.Terrible experience to bring a loved one to this place. Went to the University of Tennessee ER in a panic one night recently because I kept finding strange masses of organisms in my apartment, along with being extremely itchy. I taped onto a 3x5 some samples of the weird manifestations (some looked like mites, etc) and headed to their ER (I only went to UT because they supposedly have the best technology.) When I first got there and was showing the intake staff my 3x5 and pictures from my apartment, their reaction was of genuine concern and confusion as to what the problem might be. When they brought the charge nurse out he was extremely condescending and I could tell right away he didnt believe me. Matters only got worse when I went back into the room. The doctor came In, didnt introduce herself, said i dont care when i tried to show her my photo evidence, asked if i used drugs and said ARE YOU SUREEEE when I denied using them. I left as quick as I could. I have since seen a different doctor who believes I have Lyme disease and rare manifestations thereof, currently awaiting test results and if I do indeed have an ailment I will hold accountable all medical staff who neglected their duty to treat an ailing patient that night. Think before you commit malpractice. Absolutely unethical that a doctor wouldnt rule out any physical possibilities before assuming someone delsuional. All youre doing is potentially manipulating someone into an early grave because a doctor whom they thought they could trust called them crazy.

Poor quality of healthcare. Was left in lobby for an hour after my chief complaint was difficulty breathing. Once I got a room there was used syringes beside the toilet and my bed had so much grim and crud on it. It would of been easily cleaned but clearly UT hospital isn’t as worried about the pandemic as they like to claim to the news media. Then I was left in a small hallway with a group of other patients for over an hour to wait for a CT. UT could care less about the spread of COVID or the safety of the people who are entrusting them with their lives.

Severely understaffed for the incredibly high patient volume. Went in for a simple but potentially life threatening problem. They must run each patient through the whole gamut of testing weather or not its necessary. At a cost of thousands each, and not even necessary. Was given an i.v. And injected with a chemical, to keep the i.v. From coagulating. Never even used it. Was made to sit and wait 10 hours with a needle jabbing me in the arm. along with many many others who were obviously in desperate need of care. I was “parked” in one of the “fast track” rooms by mistake where i sat and listened to doctors and nurses socializing and joking about patients. After 10 hours i left without being seen. A huge waste of time and agonizing wait. Two weeks after this incident, I received a bill for $4000,00. I was unable to contest it even with my attorney, because they make you sign papers with “fine print” at triage. The one good thing about this place is the gentleman in the lobby triage with dark hair and a moustache. He was incredible, genuine caring customer service, he should be given a huge raise. But after him it just became a sad circus. Sorry but with all the money you make you should be able to hire more people.

What everyone else said. I dont understand how the staff are simultaneously both disturbingly cheery and utterly oblivious to how poor and chaotic their care is. I brought my fiance in for a broken collarbone and hes been sitting in a bed in the middle of the hall for almost eight hours and sitting with an IV in his arm for about two. Despite the obvious complications of keeping someone with a broken bone waiting for so long (it also took several hours for him to even receive pain medication) it seems like this is just the status quo here.I have no idea how keeping patients in beds in the hallways (while also making zero effort to speak quietly to protect their information) complies with HIPAA. I wouldnt be able to so much as look at myself in the mirror if I worked here as a healthcare provider.NOBODY here seems to understand how to relay communication to other departments. The entire hospital is alarmingly dirty and overcrowded. The restrooms are revolting, slimy biohazards (the first one I attempted to use had a giant pile of feces sitting on top of the toilet seat and the second one had water leaking from the toilet in puddles on the floor. Both somehow smelled worse than a carnival port a potty).I understand that American health care is generally extremely poor and inordinately expensive, but for this to be a hospital in a first world country is absurd. Patients are shuffled about like farm animals and left to sit needing emergency treatment for as long as 5-10+ hours. Everyone is constantly upset, complaining, and angry. I have yet to see a happy, satisfied patient in the entire day Ive been here. I have seen multiple patients get up and leave while staff sit there dozing off into their phones and computer screens looking totally vacant. The answer to ANY question I ask is uhhhhh I dont know with a delirious giggle and a shrug. Most staff members walk away from you before you can even finish speaking to them, blank smiles plastered on their faces the whole way. Disturbing. Its as though the staff are completely desensitized to the horrors of this facility. I cant imagine seeing this level of ineptitude and blatant disregard for even the most basic of human respect on a daily basis and just...being fine with it. What else are they desensitized to? How can you feel good about working for a place like this?Like others said, go to Tennova or Fort Sanders. Hell, go to a veterinarian instead. I dont know how this hospital remains open. I typically dont review anything like this, but I am genuinely shaken by this experience. I suppose the Hippocratic oath is optional now.

Unacceptable quality, attentiveness, personal patient medical integration, nurse yelling names like an Army Drill Seargent, MANY patients ignored, poor professionalism, upon registration & in treatment area. Charge Nurses attitude was unacceptable, uncompassionate & offensive! People were treated like cattle, tagged & pushed into specific areas. Unfair...descrimatory medical assessments, determining by who, which patient is dressed best, has premier insurance etc. Have witnessed this many times! Had IV jerked out of my elbow bend by nurse that was not wearing gloves & touched door handles to obtain supplies, I stated was (after 5 hrs of waiting with blood clots in my lungs & trouble breathing) if its gonna be too much longer, Im going to leave & instead of addressing the issue of time, the nurse states THATS FINE & walks off, with me believing she is going to find out how much longer it will be & instead, she has two 2 inch gauze squars & a roll of tape, bends my arm down & litterally jerks my IV out, in front of EVERYONE, causing my arm to expell a massive amount of blood, due to me being on BLOOD THINNER! (reference to afore mentioned, I have pulmonary embolisms blood clots on my lungs & am recovering from recent DVT in my leg, very painful..& this same ER was the one that found & diagnosed the embolisms, just a few weeks before!) I give 1 star, ONLY because the ER did find the blood clots, the MD upon that visit was excellent, as was the male tech. The same male tech from my prior visit remembered me & helped wheel me to the registration desk & was a role model of professionalism, compassion, patient care & QUALITY! This is my second horrifically negative visit! I live in a neighboring county but go to UT because I am currently being treated by a UT Specialist. Driving over an hour to get mistreated is not copacetic! In fact, it is very disappointing & frustrating. The staff stands together, socialize & laugh, then mistreat the patients that they deem unworthy of treatment because of their clothing/stature/demeanor & insurance! They are laughing...in front of patients that are suffering & are there because they/we are sick/injured/in pain & dont feel like laughing! Supervisors over but outside of the ER were VERY compassionate, professional & caring, 5 stars for them! Enough said!
