Now 14 months after surgery... 3 days in Swedish Hospital, 13 lucky days at Life Care Center of Kirkland. (8 vertebrae fused, many screws and rods) The pain was unimaginable for most of a year. Initially the pain went mostly improperly treated. Now able to walk 1 to 5 miles with considerable stiffness and pain.I havent recovered full use of my right hand. My feet soles are numb.Be very careful considering this type of surgery. Receive accurate expect ions. Plan on permanent disabilities similar or worse than prior to surgery.

After dealing with medical providers in Kitsap County for a year and a half being told fusion was the only option. I received a referral to see Dr Chapman, he and staff were excellent. Dr. Chapman was reassuring and told me I was a prime candidate for an artificial disk. I had been considering going to Germany to get the same procedure done. His office was able to get my insurance company to approve a CT the following business day. I can’t say enough about how great everyone there is. Keeping my fingers crossed that surgery will go well. Try watching his videos on YouTube (Seattle Science Foundation)My referral to Dr. Chapman came from an all star group of doctors in the Seattle area. My hand surgeon who happens to be the hand surgeon for several of the major Seattle area sports teams (who had his neck operated on by Dr Chapman twice). My brother in law who is a retired surgeon at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and a researcher at the UW who says that most of the doctors at UW, Swedish, Harborview, and Fred Hutch have all there spinal issues worked on by Dr. Chapman. In addition to my local MD who treats most of the Doctors in Kitsap County. After a brief battle with my insurance company who initially denied my operation Dr. Chapman got approval for my surgery.Last week I had my surgery. The staff who greeted me we’re all wonderful even at 5:30 am. Everyone from the nurse that we will be back, to the anesthesiologist, to the operating room staff were friendly, professional, and reassuring. In post op I was greeted by the most wonderful grandmotherly woman. The overnight nurse was just as wonderful, any questions I had were answered. Hospital room was better than expected. When the doctor came to visit me the next morning part of discharge he was very pleasant professional and helped set the expectations of what I needed to do for a full recovery. I could not be happier with the outcome and I’m only one week and in recovery from the surgery. If all continues to go well my life will return to normal.4 months post OP and my neck is doing great! Thanks to Dr. Chapman!!!!!!

Dr. Chapman performed an extensive spinal surgery on me in July 2019. It involved the entire length of my spine, with 4 rods, 27 screws, and numerous bone grafts. I spent 3 weeks in rehab at Swedish Hospital with a compassionate, competent staff. Between the surgeon and the support staff, I now have an entirely new lease on life. Prior to the surgery, I was permanently bent at a 45 degree angle from the hips: I am now standing tall and able to walk normally. I can do so many things I had given up on, including cooking, sewing, shopping and caring for my family! Best of all, I am scheduled to fly to the Netherlands to visit the daughter I havent seen in years; I had given up hope to ever be able to travel again. Dr. Chapman literally saved my life, and I am forever grateful for his unique talents in the operating room.

Dr. Chapman was amazing and brilliant. He successfully diagnosed and performed an extremely complicated surgery ,which saved my life. His explanations were clear and comprehensive. Swedish was the best facility I have ever experienced. The staff were kind, polite and very conscientious. I am very grateful I was referred to Dr.Chapman and chose Swedish.

The care that I received from Dr Chapman/Dr York and his staff was stellar. Dr Chapman is so well focused and extremely gifted. He also is so easy to talk with. He hung out with my visiting friends for a while, as we all did finger exercises for my neck. I will never ever forget that scene. I love Dr. Chapman . He saved me from paralysis from a broken neck. He also I well respected by his peers. Everyone always had something great day about him. The x-ray tech, the workers in surgery etc. That says it all.

Unfortunately Jens Chapman is more interested in high throughput than quality care. I went to him because I thought he was one of the best in Washington state, - I was wrong. In a fairly routine surgery he caused me unrepairable nerve damage and over 2 years of extreme nerve pain that continues to this day. I woke up from surgery from a fairly routine S1, L5, L4 fusion unable to walk. I spent the next 5 weeks using two walking sticks to keep from falling over. It took over a year of PT to be able to walk again, although not normal as I have permanent foot drop as a result of a nerve damage done in surgery. Dr. Chapmans trusted PA (Tanya) is a disaster as she mismanaged my pain treatment until I showed up in his office months after surgery and he witnessed my extreme pain where he took over my pain management. Since then he has never had me deal with Tanya. So let me explain my concerns with Dr. Chapman. He does not open or close but has understudies do that and he shows up for the major parts of the surgery. On the surface, I had no issue with that but in reality it is his strategy for having high throughput that compromises patient quality care. On my day of surgery I was told to report about 1pm, and waited for 3 hours for surgery. Only to find out too late to object that i was number four surgery that day and after starting my surgery at 4 pm on a Friday with a 5th surgery in waiting. Do I think his heavy surgery schedule that went long impacting my quality of care cutting into his pans for a Friday happy hour - yes I do.If you go to Dr. Chapman I suggest if you are not number one or number 2 surgery for the day wave off and refuse surgery - insist on being rescheduled. No surgeon that cares about his patients should attempt more than 2 or 3 surgeries in a day and certainly not 5. My sister went to OSHU for a more extreme surgery fusing a dozen levels to correct scoliosis lasting 14 hours and no nerve damage, But then her surgeon was focused on fixing her and not on the next operation. Frankly, I regret not following her lead.It would be less egregious if Dr. Chapman had fessed up to his shortcomings but he spent much of his time with me explaining why the outcome was not his fault. My brother in law is also a doc and he helped me debunk Chapmans claims of non-responsibility. I asked why I had extreme pain in both feet since only my right foot was impaired with nerve damage. He told me there was a crossover in the brain that caused the pain to migrate. My doc brother in law researched this claim to find it was BS. Chapman also told me I had a bone spur that nicked the nerve and cause the nerve damage but as I questioned the validity of this theory it became obvious that when he was pulling my spine back into alignment the nerve touched bone and caused my permanent nerve damage and lifelong impairment in my right foot. He put me through a follow on surgery to correct this faux problem that he claimed caused my nerve damage. To this day, I cannot believe he subjected me to a needles surgery to trey and sustain his fictitious claim of a bone spur cause of my nerve damage (and if it was why did he not see the risk from numerous pre-surgery X-rays and other imaging). He later admitted that he learned a great deal form my situation that will help him do better with other patients. Not what I expect from a self proclaimed preeminent neurosurgeon surgeon. My take - use Dr. Chapman at your own risk with recognition of the shortcomings I noted above. If I was to do it again I would go to the surgeon who fixed my sisters far more extreme condition without the nerve damage I experienced with patient care being his top priority. Not what you get with Dr chapman unless you proactively insist on it.

Everything is fine unless you ask any questions. Arrogant with no bedside manner. Wife had to have follow up surgery (by another Dr.) to correct his error. Jens didnt even bother to let me know surgery was over and my wife was in recovery room and ok. On one pre-op visit to his office we had to wait 90 mins to see him. Post-op visits were a joke. Didnt care to listen when we gave status of recovery and new neurological symptoms that werent resolved until corrective surgery was done. Am just glad no bone glue was needed during the procedure.

Dr Chapman took extra care and was able to make sure that my husband did not have a flare-up of RSD (also called CRPS) after surgery to correct herniated disks in his spine. We are so grateful.
