I have been to this location many times, strictly for random drug screens. I’m usually in & out in 15 minutes tops. I go today to test, I walk in at 540, which is what they have told me to do so I wouldn’t have to wait & because it takes them just a minute to do mine. At 540, I was told they were already closed & I would have to come back in the morning, which I can’t do. They close at 6, the doors were still open & patients were still coming & going. If you’re going to close early, do it every day across the board. You can’t pick and choose what days you stay open your actual business hours.

The staff is super friendly, welcoming and helpful which makes this my new favorite urgent care clinic. They were very timely with getting me back, getting my tests done and diagnosis.

Updated from 1 star. Had a much better experience for second covid test. They set time slots so you could come back and not wait for hours in room. Was served close to on time so much better experience since they redid how they see patients

Went for DOT physical today I really enjoyed DR Bonuel he is a very caring Dr 5 stars for him an absolute pleasure to meet him.

I have been to this AFC many times as a walk in. They are usually pretty good. I went yesterday to be seen as an urgent care walk in and was told I need an appointment. I asked for another urgent care near by and was told to go to the ER. If I felt it was an emergency of that nature I would have gone.

Would NOT recommend!!!Lady at the front was very rude. The website and their door advertises **no appointments necessary** and I work a tight schedule because of my job and was going on for a rapid covid test. She proceeded to tell me all the slots had been filled for the day even though there was only one other lady in the waiting room. I got there about 5:42 and they close at 6. IS ALL IM SAYING. She gave me attitude the whole time, and also when I asked about trying to get a slot for tomorrow she said that no I would have to come IN to even put my name down. ?!?!?!?! Not a good way to manage an urgent care office. Poor service all around.

Patient beware. I went to this location on 3-24-2021 and not only does this location regularly and blatantly violate the Americans with Disabilities Act (requiring face coverings for all regardless of disability), they also have no problems with injecting patients against their will while having the audacity to charge you for the shot. The receptionist actually refused to even acknowledge I was standing in front of her until my face was covered with a face shield that immediately spiked my blood pressure.After speaking with their account representatives, and being told I in fact have a credit on my account, they are still sending me a bill for something that I refused yet was forcibly given anyway. Not only will I never go to another AFC, I will also never pay that $24 for a shot that I didnt ask for.

When My son went to the doctor. The doctor didn’t even listen to his chest or look in his ears or look at his throat. They just tested him for covid. And didn’t even tell me they were going to do that. No body told me, a nurse just walked in with the test. The doctor stood by the door with her hand on the knob! I know that they are busy with covid, BUt my son matters to. He had a fever of 103.4 and I wanted to know the reason for this. I will never go back to American family care on Odum rd again. The front desk people were not friendly at all.You know when your sick or have a sick child you want feel taking care of and treated like you all matter.

Went in for DOT Physical, wait was a lil bit but not too bad, visiting with the doctor went very good, exchange a few jokes together, Linda the receptionist and her lil partner in crime were easy to get along with, still waiting on the Red Lobster, lol... Over all experience = Great . Thank you for all that you do in this time of darkness, God bless!!!

Always a great experience when I have to go to urgent care! The doctors and nurse practitioners are always thorough and get me in and out quickly.

These 5 stars are for Dr.bonwell hes the most caring doctor Ive ever known. The rest of the staff there needs to be replaced.

I wish I could rate this 0/5 stars and warn others not to waste their time. Front desk staff were extremely rude, were eating and chatting rather than paying any attention to anyone. Then would act like your questions were too much for them and that they had somewhere else they’d rather be. The phone conversations myself and the whole waiting room heard that they had with people were cringe worthy at how rude they were and then talked about it after. Then waited in a room for over an hour for a scheduled appointment, only to be rushed out the back door for some odd reason. Nurse station was full of chatty staff gossiping about previous patients, not wearing a mask, and eating. When I got home, realized the discharge paperwork they provided me didn’t have my name on it but someone else’s. Can we say hippa violation? I felt so uncomfortable with my care that I drove to UAB. My family and I will not be back. This won’t hurt your business but soon will if you continue to have rude, unhelpful staff. You have several similar stories on both reviews and local pages on Facebook. Soon people will stop coming all together.

This is one of the best experiences we have ever had in healthcare. The staff is outstanding! We highly recommend everyone stop by American Family Care in Gardendale. You will not be disappointed!

Most of the time I come in here they never actually do any testing on me and I rarely see an actual doctor just the nurse practitioners. They do a brief exam, never tell me what they suspect or think and then give me a steroid shot then send me out with antibiotics. THEN once I feel worse after coming here they say oh well you should come back for more testing. All they want to do is take your money. Not to mention all the other issues I’ve had with overcharging and screw ups with the front desk.

Great staff. I had my 4 yr old daughter with me and the nurses watched her as I was getting xrays for a broken foot. So helpful!

Michelle the veteran health tech not only helped me with my issue I came in for but also was extremely supportive from one veteran to another.

Wait a hour for them to tell me that they can’t do a D.O.T because my pressure is too high.... you think!! Waiting so long what do you expect 🤷🏾‍♂️.....never again

They tested me for COVID and Flu didn’t offer any resolution or try to find out what was wrong. I went to another doctor and found I have a sinus infection. This place should be shut down.

I seriously wish I could give negative stars. None of the employees wore masks. I had a bad cough and tight chest due to sinus infection. They refused to treat me and made me go to the ER instead. In which the ER told me they didnt understand why they wouldnt treat me. They said I was perfectly fine and just had a sinus infection and needed a steroid shot. So instead of them doing their jobs, they pawned me off to someone else, then leaving a single mother of 2 with a 500 dollar ER visit for the same treatment they would have given me for 20 dollars. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Biggest joke of a facility. The receptionist is unbelievably rude. Yelling at patients, losing people’s sign ins and making them go to the back of the line… very slow service. Even went as far as laughing at people’s names…

Very rude no personality I understand its overwhelming because of Covid but we didnt ask to get sick Im in the medical field myself if you cant handle situations then you need to find something else to do.

This place is horrible they have doctor there that is very unexperienced I went in for a yeast infection and this lady gave me pill for something .I did not have on top of that it will give me a worse yeast infection.

Sat there for 3 hours. Watched people who were there for the same reason I was, Covid test, get called before me, but they walked in 45 min after me. When I was visibly having a hard time breathing, I was taken back just for vitals, nurse came in basically admonished me and told me if I didn’t want to wait more I could go to ER. Never again.

I have to self pay because I dont have insurance. $175 out of my.pocmet for the doctor to not even listen to me breathe, talk to me for maybe 30 seconds max, prescribe me q zpak and not answer any of my questions. My lungs are burning and my inhaler isnt working. BP was 144/101 and all you can tell me is possible sinus or bronchitis. No tests run, no chest xray. Nothing. This doctor is a crook. I left crying because I dont have an answer as to what is wrong with me. Set me back $175 for nothing.

BE AWARE!!!!! Do not go here. I went for a Covid test back in July. I received a bill from them for my deductible, I called my insurance and they said per their policy and the Cares Act the deductible should be waived. I called AMF Gardendale and let them know. Just received a notice they sent me to collections. I did not receive any statements other than that one I called about. I can’t get anyone on the phone. According to BBB this is a common issue with AFC. They charge for Covid testing even if it’s against the cares act and patients are getting surprise bills or collection notices. They didn’t follow any of the rules regarding sending someone to collections, never received the proper amount of statements, was never contacted etc. I tried calling, they literally will not answer the phone. I am definitely appealing this. Be weary of this location.

We just received. $673 bill for the two covid tests my husband had. I asked MULTIPLE times if there would be ANY associated costs - facility fees, physicians fees, lab fees, etc and was assured there would be no charges. I guarantee you we will NOT be paying this bill. I will however be reporting you for violating the FFCRA and for fraudulent billing to HHS and the Attorney General’s office if this isn’t corrected immediately.Plus, the billing support specialist, Kenisha, was rude and unprofessional and told me I can do my own research. They can charge for anything because they aren’t government funded.

I went for Covid testing because a Family member tested positive for Covid. Thankfully I was negative. I was at desk in the back waiting on a doctors note when Kiara came to desk and sat down in front of me without a mask. If patients are required to wear a mask, why is a member of staff exempt???

I planned to get a Covid test today. I am not showing symptoms but wanted to get a test out of precaution as I will be staying over night with grandparents for vacation for the first time since the pandemic started. I didnt make it past reception. I asked one of the receptionist if it would be okay if I sat in my car and waited for my appointed time to be called back, as I didnt want to be exposed to all the people coughing in the waiting room if I wasnt sick. She said that would be fine and told me to write my number down and they would call me. After I wrote my information down, the other receptionist looks up at me like Im annoying her just with my presence. I tell her what her coworker said and she said, We got all these other people to test. We dont have time to call you. You can have a seat. Her tone and look were condescending and rude. I understand they are busy and it is a hard time for everyone but there is no excuse for such poor customer service. The rude attitude was enough for me to take my name off the waiting list and not return to AFC Gardendale in the future.

Without question, the rudest front desk people Ive ever encountered. Girl actually rolled her eyes at me when I told her I just needed a document printed from a previous visit. She was rude and insulting to me and two other random people on that visit too.

They used to be good but now they’re just awful. My husband just had the WORST experience there. Do not waste your time or money.

They do not accept medicaid and the receptionist made sure to say that before so spoke to me.

I greatly enjoyed my visit with Dr. Bonuel. He was very patient and understanding. He listened to my concerns and took his time explaining how to go about being treated. He is a very gifted doctor and he’s the reason why I will continue to use this urgent care.

I would give zero stars if that was an option. The doctor acted like it didn’t matter what I said. I was told she was unsure what was wrong with me but gave me a steroid shot and a Zpack. They only tested for two things instead of doing a full work up because they were ‘so busy’. That was on November 21st and I am still sick with the same problem that never went away. I called up there and they said I would have to pay another copay for the same issue they didn’t fix. I was instructed to go to the ER since I can’t pay the copay that was already paid. They literally do not care about your health in any way. Also another notable thing was the nurse who came in to draw blood was very shaken and nervous like she had never drawn blood. She blew my vein.

I wish I could put no stars. I visited this AFC in December. I had Blue Cross Blue Shield but it wouldn’t be active till the first of January 2021. I went in and was told to pay 175 dollars and I did. I was under the impression that paid for my whole doctor visit. I wasn’t told if I had to do a lab it would cost extra or anything similar to that.My visit was sub par. I was told to change into a gown from the doctor, less than five minutes later a male nurse comes in without knocking to receive something from the room. Thankfully I quickly dressed. I believe it’s manners to knock when u know a patient is dressing and wait for the patient to say it’s ok before coming in. The doctor I had was sweet but was new and couldn’t give me a clear diagnosis before I left. I called several times to see if my results came in. The first time I called I was told AFC would call me when my results were ready. Over a month after my visit I didn’t receive a call, so I called again and asked for my results and they were ready. I went to pick up my results and it was just handed to me and nobody explained to me my test results.Lastly, I received a bill today from LabCorp of 973.00 for my lab testing. My problem with this is, if someone is uninsured I believe that person should be told what the total bill cost will be upfront so they can have all the information before they decide to have a visit. I’m even more upset with this because at AFC in Forestdale always called me when my results were ready and a doctor explained to me my results. Also, I saw first hand when someone was uninsured they explained to them what their total bill will be. I know AFC could’ve done better. I’m really disappointed and upset with this whole experience. This establishment shows what’s wrong with U.S healthcare. I won’t be visiting here again.

Dr. Vic Bonuel has taken care of my family and I on multiple occasions. He has been very helpful and very professional. My family and I will not go to another doctor when we are sick. Please continue to be the great doctor that you are!

I called about a month ago to check if I could get a refill on RXs due to covid, and since they are now using the waiting lobby for patients (per the nurse).The nurse told me Dr. Holloway was not in that day but she would check with him the following day. I then asked if I needed to call her back and she answered she would call me. As if to question my wish of not waiting in their lobby, she asked if I shopped grocery stores. I told her I did not (still don’t). I consider myself a high risk. To shorten this review, the nurse has not called me back (has been a month now). I have been to this AFC office many times in the past 10 years. This the care given me by Dr. Holliman’s staff at AFC.

These have got to be the RUDEST people I know especially “Ms.Linda” you could at least act happy to answer a phone. And not to mention they left me in my room for 2 hours and 45 minutes because they “didn’t realize I was still waiting.” Nice to know these people “care” I will gladly take my business elsewhere.Edit: why don’t you guys comment under the one star comments like you do the five star????

My experience with the doctor was awesome

Ive not left a review before but I have been here a few times and the first few times were okay and actually very great! These last two times I went i was sent to the ER after being misdiagnosed for cat bite complications, and then was reffered to as her/she and talked poorly about between the nurses and was not taken seriously when I was having difficulty breathing and sinus issues. Was told it was anxiety or asthma (which Ive never had) when it is actually bronchitis and sinusitis.

Love, love love Doctor Vic Bonuel he is the best.....so caring and helpful....I wish he could be my family and I primary care physician....Linda at front desk is so nice too.....

I wouldn’t recommend this office to anyone I truly cared about. Poorly managed and there is no communication. Sat for 3 hours for what they advertised as a 15 minute test. I would look elsewhere for mine or my families medical needs.

The waiting room is very visibly dirty. There are cobwebs, dirt and visible residue on the chairs. Dirt, hair and candy wrappers litter the floor. I arrived at 8:30 this morning and there is no telling me that the grim had accumulated since opening 30 minutes prior, they just aren’t cleaning this place.

If you dont have insurance dont even bother with this place, in fact dont bother with this place regardless. They tried to charge me 275 dollars before even asking me why I was there. 275 + whatever the charge is for a Covid test is absolutely unacceptable. There are places around Birmingham doing tests for 50 dollars for all people. The only reason I came to this location was for convenience sake, as I had already been pre-warned by my friends and family about the level of care they offer. They will also try their hardest to refuse you medical care if you are inunsured. They just tell you over and over that they cant put you in the computer without insurance information. Front desk people are rude as can be as well. Outrageous prices, absolutely unprofessional staff, not worth your time. Nothing is being cleaned, not the pens after each sign in nor the counters or door handles. I wouldnt recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Although I was somewhat sick...my experience at AFC was great all together. The staff were very sweet and and my Dr. (Dr. bonuel) couldnt have been better. I left there feeling like I came to the right place and had full faith I was going to heal and get back to normal very soon! Thank you so much to everyone!

A little disappointed with my sons visit. He had a sports PE done . During the visit my son mentioned his ear felt plugged the Dr. Looked in ear told him it was plugged with wax, make another appt. While, I understand billing issues my group would have just did ear irrigation and called it a day. Never have any of my Drs sent somebody away like this.

The doctor was quick and the staff EXTREMELY helpful. Unfortunately I dont remember the name of the Nurse that helped me but she was very pretty and wearing purple lipstick. She made sure I knew how to use my crutches and got to my car safely and I have never been treated that nicely before, so I am EXTREMELY grateful towards her.

This is the absolute worst urgent care I have ever been too. They was so rude and had to call other hospitals to ask how to treat my wife. Then on top of that it’s a 50 dollar co pay in which they did nothing for her they just sent her to another hospital so I payed another co pay on top of the one they made me pay for telling her to go somewhere else

Cant say enough good things about this place. Open 7 days a week with convenient hours and great staff of doctors and nurses!

Would’ve given five star if not for the wait this morning. They didn’t have any doctor or anything in that office till nearly 9 because of a mix up, but that sweet little office girl kept us all informed and tired her very best to keep everyone happy. Very nice staff. Liked the doctor they sent in.

Wonderful front office staff and nurses! Just left there and although we waited nearly two hours the staff were so nice. I brought my grand mother there and Shelby was so kind to her, even brought her cards out to her instead of making her get up. Absolutely wonderful people working there.

Pretty good place to go for urgent care. Nice helpful people. And they actually have doctors at their location. For some reason, in Arizona, the urgent care facilities don’t usually have doctors available. In Tucson, anyway. I called around and asked.

When to this place to get tested for COVID-19 because my work required me to get tested before returning to work stressed to them how I couldn’t afford to be off work for to long. They told me my test would take 48 to 72 hours to come back and here it is the 16th still no word from them and no answers when I call them they are no help at all would give a no star if it would let me!!! Never using them again this place is just taking peoples money during this pandemic! I believe they are just taking people’s money and screwing them out of work when they are not sick at all! I went to a independent urgent care the 14th and was tested by them and have already got back my negative test results do not use American family care us the emergency room or a independent company

Linda. This review is to address the issue of Linda, the front receptionist. Called ahead to confirm walk-ins were an option (due to corona, I like to double check that places are open, and accepting guests) but I could tell by the sound of her voice that she was annoyed I had called. Shortest responses I’ve ever heard and flat out rude. Then when asking a question about the reason for my visit. I get a “blah blah blah, SIR”. The way she said sir at the end was the most degrading thing said to me this year. Using cis gender pronouns with strangers over the phone is immature and needs to be addressed. It’s 2020, grow up. Or take your attitude somewhere else. Where is compassion and sensitivity???

I like the gardendale family Care the doctors are amazing but the people that answers the phone they are unprofessional so I stopped going so the three stars are for the doctors...

Why be rude to someone on the phone...I called to ask about immunizations for college and was met with a very rude ms linda. She answered the phone already mad judging by her tone and then when I said I need to ask a few questions if you have time. She replied with I dont have time but go ahead. I thought that was bad enough but when she continued and wouldnt let me finish a sentence before interrupting me I knew then that it was time to find somewhere else. So after I get this deal done for school that will be my last endeavor with AFC Gardendale and ms linda

Asia was knowledgeable about insurance requirements. We arrived 1 hour before closing in a Sunday night thinking we would be handed an aspirin for our flu and sent away quickly but to our pleasant surprise we were tended to carefully and considerably we were tested thoroughly and treated for our symptoms and given the necessary treatment and medication. We even had a follow up call the next day and are doing better, I would highly recommend AFC to anyone and will pray I won’t have to go back due to illness but would be confident if I had to.

The wait time was nothing. Dr. Ryder was absolutely wonderful. The staff is accommodating to any issues you may have. Amy and Amy were truly delights both of them. They were extremely kind and helpful. This was actually the most pleasant Dr. visit Ive personally ever had, and I cant recommend them enough. I really cant say anything negative about this place. It was wonderful!

Horrible! Complete waste of 2 hours of my life. I told the doctor exactly what I needed and not only did she not listen and not help me, but she told me several lies. If the doctor with the red hair sees you, you are in trouble! I would go to a real doctor and not waste your time. Very much a doc in the box place with a bottom of the barrel doctor and it shows!

My nurse and nurse practitioner were good. However, the lady at the front desk was very rude. Her name was Linda who works in patient relations. I haven’t ever really been by myself to the doctor as a young teenager and wasn’t really sure what to do. She was the only one up there and had an attitude about every question I had. I was over it and will probably not be going back here! Everyone else was great especially my nurse, I think her name was kayanna. Gardendale AL, American family care

I went in for an x-ray of what felt like broken ribs. I could see the fractures on the x-rays but the tech insisted I was seeing things. I finally ended up in the ER with so much pain and turned out I had THREE broken ribs. These folks are quacks.

This office is always so nice ... the staff very friendly and professional. I especially enjoyed meeting the nurse practitioner, who was new to me. She is wonderful!

The Doctors did a really excellent job taking care of my cyst on my back. Its healed very well and they were great on the follow up call and visit. I would recommend them to all my family and friends. I will definitely use them anytime I need something taken care of.

Wow... doctor visit was a “write a script” at its best. I have never been to a doctor that asked me one question and didn’t even touch or feel my throat or breathing. He wrote me a script for amoxicillin. No shot even. I told him I had a 3 week year old baby and can’t take a chance of getting him sick. He handed me a “google” search tip sheet to feel better. Pathetic

Rudest front desk people that I have ever encountered. I will not go back, they talk about the patients and laugh as the patient walks away, they behave like 5 year olds but are nasty and rude.

Everyone was really nice and the nurse practitioner was very thorough. She really seemed to care about making sure I got what I needed.

The service was very pleasant from the two nurses that waited on me. However, the professionalism needs improvement. I will not share the reason for the reaction, but it felt like I was being treated as less than over something that I had to give. MONEY. No worries they will hear from me again in the near future.

The wait was a bit long. We were there for more than 2 hours total, but the care was excellent and the nurses were so nice so it made up for the wait.

I went on a Sunday morning and was out with my prescription from their pharmacy in less than 30 minutes. The doctor was very personable and quick to listen.Update - One day after my visit AFC called me to check and see how I was doing. Who does that these days? I really appreciated the call. :)

I have had to go to American Care two different times, and I can’t said enough about the care I received. They went way up above even what my primary doctor does. It was for the crud both times and they covered everything from congestion, cough, runny nose. I would recommend it to anyone. Wait time around 15 mins both times. Very pleased.

Went on Christmas Eve with ear ache/blockage in my ear. Waiting room was about half full, but I got in quickly considering the number of folks already there. The nurses washed and cleaned out both ears TWICE and I had the privilege of dropping my drawers to get a shot in my tush. That was my second visit to this AFC in two weeks for different ailments and was very pleased with my treatment. It did seem, however, that their scales weighed me heavy! 🤣

Doctor ordered unnecessary tests and continued to treat me like I was in for a routine visit for a primary care appointment. I went in feeling ill, tired, chills and body aches but he wanted to talk about my weight instead. I left there not only untreated but insulted. I WILL NOT BE BACK!

The nurse that helped with my son was great, he is still talking about the stickers he was given by her. Also, the NP was fabulous. She is always thorough and conscious of our time.

Dr John Holloway has been taking care of me for 15 years. He listens to me describe my symptoms and has always given the right diagnosis. This trip included, even after 2 trips to an ER and a trip to my primary care doctor. The staff has always been professional and attentive. The onsite Pharmacist went over my antibiotic instructions and told me what side effects to expect. I would certainly recommend this AFC location.

DR IS GREAT. The wait the last 3 times I have been here is around 3 hours. No one communicates to you what is going on or how much longer you have to wait. Good DR but poorly managed. They just want to tell you that they are busy. Thats to be expected this time of year so they should attempt to plan for it.

They seem to take forever to see somebody. Been sitting in a room for over an hour and a half with my mom and could hear all the nurses talking. When I walked out of the room to go get something out of my car they were just sitting there playing on their phones. Finally she was seen after I came back in 2 minutes later.
