Do NOT and I mean do not go to this hospital for any type of emergency care unless you don’t want to walk back out! This hospital killed my healthy grandmother a few weeks ago all because they simply did not care. They did not take the proper steps and made MANY mistake along the way. The nurses that we had were awful and had attitudes as well as not giving her anything she asked for including medication. They not only let her suffer, but watched her die in their care! I am in no way exaggerating and we are already on top of making sure this never happens again to anyone else. I am not just a grieving granddaughter that needs to point blame on someone in order for me to feel better. This really happened and proof is everywhere you turn. Please go somewhere else PLEASE! Not sure why the reviews are so low possibly for the wait time in the afternoon. the triage went fine and x-rays were quick. I had a bad experience with them trying to draw blood because my veins are small. But thats it. Just awful!! Long er waiting, unprofessional staff, negligent, a disgrace to the name John’s Hopkins. My mom had surgery here on her appendix, it was an emergency situation. The wait at the ER was unbelievably long. She also has an underlying condition, multiple sclerosis, where stress and turmoil causes her a great amount of discomfort and affects her overall health. It’s been 2 weeks now and she still has not recovered from the surgery and has other issues going on because of it. Howard General was in a rush to get her out to rehab, which as a result, she had to go back to the hospital. Fortunately, Howard General didn’t have room for her. She was transferred to Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, where she is extremely happy with!! The doctors and nurses there are so professional, genuinely caring, and prompt. Unlike our experience at Howard. I live 4 miles away from the hospital and I will never go there for anything.Patient Relations doesn’t do a thing. I’ve called twice in the last 2 weeks and still haven’t talked to anyone. I also left my mom at the hospital with 2 things, her glasses and cell phone. Her designer, progressive glasses were thrown away with the linens and are now missing! This place is a circus, do not send your loved ones here.

Worst ER and triage nurses. Left me in the hall for hours. I was sobbing because of the pain. No one would help me. I called my partner to come and get me after 2 hours. I left triage with needles still in my hands. Triage nurses were angry and one intentionally hurt me. How can a nurse be so cruel because I wanted to protect myself? They are cruel. They made up lots of excuses and when that didn’t work they attacked me for lying about my symptoms. Johns Hopkins should be ashamed of themselves associating with Howard County General Hospital.

If I could give this hospital a zero, I would. Most of the staff are rude, lack compassion, and don’t listen. Most of the security staff is just as rude. I’ve literally heard them laughing and talking about patients, outside my room, very loudly, while I was trying to sleep. And also, when I had my items I brought with me returned to me. They didn’t return all my original items. I called the hospital, and they told me I could come and receive my items. However, it was early in the morning, and there was no way I could go out of my way to the hospital, and make it to work on time. When I complained, and said I shouldn’t have to travel back to hospital because of the level of incompetence, the woman over the phone literally said” What do you want me to do? It is not my problem.”

Where to begin??? This is my second visit to the ER in 2 weeks. The first was for myself and this time for my daughter. For myself, the ER was packed , standing room only, the elderly left by themselves. I even witnessed them taking as wheelchair while the patient went to the bathroom and said oh well we need the chair. As for my daughter, we arrived around 4:45am and were the only ones in the waiting area. She was in n triage quickly and then back to a room. Her room was not cleaned before they put her in there. There was a glove remnant and bandaid tabs on the floor. We have now been here 10 hours. All tests are in and we shouldve already left. Still waiting as the new face of HCGH has drastically changed to me.This has been my hospital delivering both my kids and the hospital we HAD always come to for all of our medical needs. This will be our last time here. The staff is rude, and short. I havent seen a decent bed side manner. A lot of nasty, needlessly combative people work here. When we were brought into the room, the bed was literally covered in used bloody sheets and blanket that were never changed despite multiple requests. Patients here are denied basic amenities like water. Took hours and many many requests to get a single cup of water that we had to squirrel away (couldn’t spare a sip) because we might not get it again - heaven forbid we ask for a morsel of food or an extra blanket (it’s freezing and loud and dirty.) We could clearly see the nurse we asked for water hanging out, being on her phone. Meanwhile the experience costs more than the most expensive hotel room in the world.

My biggest issue with Howard County General is the Emergency Room.As long as I can drive, I will go to a Baltimore ER before I will go to Howard County Generals ER.I feel as if I have been treated poorly when I have gone there because of a past history that should not be something that effects how I am treated now. There was a period when I had to be seen repeatedly for a problem that they, again treated me as if I was making it up, to the point that they actually did an unnecessary psychiatric evaluation on me. And it was a medical problem. They discharged me despite fact that I was no better and when I decided to go to another hospitals ER I was still having the same problem. But they discharged me because they were judging me. Not because they thought I was better. If you can go to a different Emergency Room, do so.The hospital itself is fine, but not the Emergency Room. It needs a lot of improvement!!!

I’m literally watching waiting patients being talked to in a condescending manner. Where is the compassion? Even if a patient is irritable (because they are in pain) it’s no reason to talk down to them. It is terrible to watch.UPDATE: This doesn’t apply to all the staff. Belated review for a visit to the ER this past August. Feels a little weird to review a hospital, but if it helps anyone this was my experience:Managed to get electrocuted (non-severe) so went to get checked on to make sure all of my vitals were fine.I feel that they got me back fairly quickly, and monitored safety protocols for COVID well.Fortunately I dont have much experience with being in hospitals, and I hope that continues, but I felt that for the most part the staff was attentive and generally friendly.Definitely appreciated that when it came time to draw blood for lab work, the nurse handling it listened to me regarding my tricky veins and got what she needed on the first attempt. Very grateful to not have been a human pincushion.I was in there for a good number of hours altogether but my case wasnt life or death. Doctors and nurses came and went pretty frequently so it wasnt like I was waiting endlessly. It was kind of strange being asked to rate my stay while I was there... especially when wasnt out yet. Maybe some rephrasing could help? If its a check in on the current quality of care its probably better to be straightforward and say that.As of current writing Im having to deal with some head-scratching oddity from the billing department. Made a payment once I managed to set aside enough $ to pay off my last (and largest) bill in early October. Here we are in December and they refunded the entire payment... so I can... pay it right back?

Almost everyone else speaks poor english. The hospital appears to have been inundated with too many staff who do not speak understandable english. This hospital used to be first class. Thats no longer the case. Be very careful when dealing with them as you can be placed in vicious cycle of run around phone tag, lack of knowledge or accountability. The head nurse was extremely rude, she went out of her way to speak in an unprofessional way to patients and family members as if they were inconveniencing her by having an emergency. If you dont like dealing with people, why would you work as a nurse?I watch them almost drop someone who has recently been in a car accident , sit around for hours doing nothing , and even stare at phones instead of helping patients . The level of care at this hospital is terrible. I would not be surprised if a number of patients have complications due to the lack of urgency and empathy provided by the terrible ER nurses at this hospital. One patient came in with what looked like cardiac arrest and she waited for an eternity before anyone even check on her. May God bless them all for what they do.

I went in yesterday in emergengy because i was having a very bad back pain. It took 5 hrs to get out from there... and guess what they did... NOTHING... worst service ever... they did not examine me they just asked questions and gave me some muscles relaxing meds and Tylenol. Thats it... is that how emergency patients be treated... and for that they kept me there for 5 hrs... if it was in the bed that was ok but they sat me down on a chair for whole 5 hrs who had a back pain... it is so much better in walk-in or urgent care...please do not go to emergency... only go if you have serious emergencies otherwise just go to the urgent care or walk ins. WORST EMERGENCY EXPERIENCE EVER...

I have always found that the staff here at the hospital are fantastic and do the best they possibly can for their patients. Look let’s face it, no one is ever happy to be there and no one ever feels like they are getting priority the way they want it but the fact is, they handle a lot of traffic in that hospital but I think they do it very well. You get what you give so if you can give a smile or some empathy to a nurse or doctor who is working long hours you will get the same in return.

The worst hospital I have ever been in. I was forced to spend the night for observation. A total horror. Four patients share one filthy toilet. No towels, no soap. I kept my shoes on as my feet stuck to the floor. I laid in the “bed” fully clothed. No sleep or rest possible. Avoid this place if at all possible.

Worst hospital you could ever go to, I grew up in Howard county and the nurses are super mean and don’t do there jobs they just sit around reminiscing together and making the waiting time longer which contributes to the long wait times for medical treatment from pa’s not seven doctors that don’t ever give proper treatment. This hospital needs to be completely re-evaluated. I can’t even describe how horrible they are here. Any hospital in Baltimore is much better and I rather go there and even wait longer if had to but I never do and always treated with care at Johns Hopkins, Sinai, and university of md shock trauma

This review is based on my experience with the ER the past few times Ive been there, but most specifically when I was there yesterday with my mother-in-law. From admittance to discharge, we were there for just over 12 hours. The good: The triage and waiting area nurses in the ER were doing absolutely everything they could to make the best out of a bad situation. They were hustling and doing their best to expedite testing and imaging, but there were no rooms opening up (after preliminary testing and imaging was complete, we were left sitting in the hallway for 6 hours while we waited for a room). I was very confused as to why it was taking so long, but after seeing the performance of the nurses in triage, I credited it to the hospital simply being overwhelmed, and, if that had been the end of it, I would not be writing this review. The bad: At hour 9.5, we finally were brought back to a room. Shortly upon being in the Adult ER department, I realized the cause of the long wait times. There was zero sense of urgency, and I heard more stories about some of the nurses children than I care to hear about some of my friends children. The nurses were sitting at their computers and chatting for the majority of the 2.5 hours we were in the room, getting up only to grab snacks, and only some of them seemed to go check on a patient on occasion. We saw the nurse and the doctor in the first 1.5 hours, then waited an hour to be discharged because our nurse disappeared. The nurse reappeared (with snacks) only when another nurse took the wheelchair from our room and asked him to promise to bring it back when he was done. Our assigned nurse stayed at the front desk and chatted with the other nurses. When the other nurse returned, he immediately went to his computer without bringing us a replacement wheelchair. I have never been in an ER where I felt less initiative, effort, and care for patients than this one.In short, if you need care that could be provided by Patient First or some other urgent care provider, please do that. If you really need an ER, explore other options before you come here.

This is what they did to my arm after taking out an ivy. I had gone there because I was having chest pains. They did tests and nothing showing anything with signs of a heart attack, but my blood pressure is sky high. I get sent home with the same symptoms, and being told to follow up with a cardiologist, thats if I can get an appointment Way to go Howard county general. Thats ok, I will be calling a lawyer if something happens to me.

I recently went here after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms for 4+ days. I was taken after having a fever of almost 104 degrees. I was absolutely terrified and truly did not know if I was going to make it - I had never felt so close to death in my life. I know people like to exaggerate, but this was not a joke. When I got there, there were about 6 people in the waiting room. The seats were all taped off for safety so no one would be sitting next to anyone else. I was so worried about going because I was nervous about sitting in a waiting room for at least 2 hours but I was taken back in less than 15 minutes. My fever and blood pressure went down and I was out within 7 hours. The longest part was waiting on my lab work. They were extremely quick and extremely efficient and it made the process so much easier. All of the nurses and my doctor were so incredibly kind. They were jovial, caring, reassuring, and attentive. They made me feel at such ease during such a terrifying time of my life. I had a similar experience less than a year ago but I never left a review. I wanted to leave a review this time because I cant even begin to imagine what anyone working in a hospital right now feels..I dont know how you can keep a smile on your face with all of the pain you are seeing and the exhaustion you must feel - the monotony of having to change and put on protective gear every single time you go into someones room just for something like someone dropping the TV remote, and so much more.. I applaud and thank everyone who helped me that night. Im finally feeling normal again and had enough energy to write this. Thank you for being there for me during such difficult times.

In the name of God, the Most Merciful and Most Beneficient. Firstly, would like to start off by saying much thanks to God for providing my father Iqbal Asif a second chance in life. Secondly, would like to thank appreciate all the medical staff including but not limited to Dr. Holden, Dr. Chuidian, Dr. Roy, Dr. Venkat, Dr. Duggani, Dr. Aziz, Dr. Mehboob, and Nurses Moe, Rose, Katelyn, Deb, Adele and any others who cared for my father during his stay at John Hopkins Howard County. My sincere apologies for any misspelled names or any other staff I did not mentioned but who cared for my father. It was an emotional roller coaster for my family and I, but again thanks to God and then to the wonderful caring staff who took very good care of my father who fought covid-19 with help of these wonderful human beings. May God bless each and everyone of you including your families! Our sincerest gratitude!

We just had an amazing experience during our 3-day stay at Howard for labor and delivery. Literally everyone we met was fabulous, from the scrub nurses in the PACU, to the maternity nurses and doctors in the maternal care wing. Compassionate, kind, and always ready to help. Breakfast was great, lunch and dinner left a little to be desired so we ended up ordering in. Other than that, we thought it was just wonderful and the provider to patient ratio was like 3:1 even when they were completely slammed becuase 20 babies were born the second day we were there. Highly recommended!

My oldest son has been dealing with chronic lung issues for over 5 years now. Were in and out of urgent care centers-waste of time and emergency rooms constantly. He has been misdiagnosed multiple times.....we know the drill, push until we find someone that will listen and take action. Our journey started at Howard Co General when _____ was 16 and we continue to come back. The hospital has improved over the years and we are thankful-very.On 01.08.2020 we visited HCGH ER to address my sons inability to catch his breath along with level 10 pain. The triage team could really use some empathy training. Once we moved into the waiting area things got worse, the nurses took immediate action when they saw him struggling to breathe. But the main purpose for this review is to highlight a 6 feet 4 in tall nurse named Aaron. He was beyond accommodating, empathetic and knowledgeable. He attended to my son with great focus, he knew everything _____ needed and made sure he got it. Hes the type of nurse every sick/ill patient deserves to have. I have 2 sons with chronic illnesses and have never had the pleasure of having a nurse as rare as Aaron. Please keep up the great work Aaron. You definitely are a diamond in the rough. We truly appreciated you during our most recent visit. You did your job and was great at it. You exceeded our expectations.

In ED waiting room for almost 5 hours. In waiting area with chest pain. Tests were completed in about 2 h and then no communication with any provider. I spoke with a nurse and she told us there was no one we could talk to, she had no idea how soon we would be see, we could not leave and come back, we could not obtain tests results for 48 hours. Very poor communication in a situation were even mundane customer service would warrant at worst good communication. Disappointing. Staff training on good customer service is in order.

I submitted a grievance letter about my experience at this godforsaken hospital in September. I was told that the process would take 2-4 weeks then someone would get in touch with me. They never did. The last straw was this past April when I received an email from their foundation asking me to DONATE to a hospital that traumatized me, lied on multiple occasions about consents and transfers, left me in a CHAIR in the COLD for almost 48 hours, refused to let me speak to a patient representative when I asked multiple times, and did nothing about a nurse in the ER (Carol) who kept yelling at me and telling me to sit down. It is unhealthy, and absolutely detestable that this hospital would treat human being this way. It is completely inappropriate. Another nurse told me to report my experience to the President/CEO when I was discharged. Rather than go that route, I decided to engage “Patient Relations” thinking someone would actually care and try to help out. Unfortunately, they (Jackie DesRoches) did nothing but lie. See attached photo showing her unprofessional and flippant email response when I asked the Foundation to remove me from their email list. I asked TWICE to be removed, they said they would, and then I received ANOTHER email in May when I NEVER asked to be on their list (they added me WITHOUT my consent) so I copied Patient Relations. When I shared I would be posting an online review, Jackie all of a sudden stated she had a follow-up letter on my concerns from SEPTEMBER (it is now MAY) and lied about having sent it to me in October. If you have a letter, why have I not received it in the mail or by email until I mention posting an online review? Nothing but liars! If you’d like to trust your health and life with a hospital that LIES, to go to a hospital where the above experience which does not even disclose the gruesome details is considered “appropriate care” and where failure to follow-up to a grievance is concerned having your concerns “addressed,” then by all means go to Howard General. If you like me find yourself here due to no other choice and leave with an unspeakable, neglectful, and harmful experience, don’t bother contacting “Patient Relations” for a resolution. Instead, go to the media. File a formal medical malpractice complaint against the providers in question and against this hospital with the state Office of Professional Practice. It is clear from the 2.1 star rating that this hospital is trash.

The people were very caring and I felt I was in good hands medically. BUT do not take their word for anything administratively. I had been given morphine for pain when an administrative person came in. I was told the doctor was admitting me and told to sign papers. I believed them. MISTAKE. A claim for three days in the emergency room was sent to the insurance company which was denied. Two days is the max in an emergency room. I was only in the emergency room about 6 hours then moved. This was in June, now it is October. After several calls to the hospital and contradictory information nothing is resolved. Examples are the hospital has not received a denial of the claim, they received two; another time they did receive the denial I should call insurance; another call billing was going to look into the detail of the claim I should call back; I call back, I was told I did not need to call back, they are working with the insurance. The latest call is the billing department says dont worry, when they are done working with insurance then they will send me a bill. The bill could be $5,000.00. I am worried! Bottom line is I will not go to Howard County Hospital again. The three days of care has turned into months of stress and miscommunication. Go elsewhere.

ER: I spent 6hrs in the waiting room before being given a room. Then when we walked to my room, it wasn’t ready yet so I had to wait by the door for them to clean and prepare the room. Myself and another patient got mixed up so the wrong doctor came in. Then I had to wait another 30min until the physician’s assistant came in. He was nice, but I really wanted to see the physician. My rating is for the wait time and what felt like a lack of organization. I didn’t like that people from ambulances were being put into the waiting room and a few of us with IVs.When I first arrived, the two women that took my vitals (one a nurse, one a doctor) were SUPER nice. After being in the waiting room, I was called back for testing and the two nurses were super nice. One guy, one girl. I was hooked up to an IV and sent back to waiting room and my vitals were rechecked about halfway through.Once in a hospital room, the nurse was great, and the lady that got me registered was FANTASTIC. Super funny, nice, and even noticed that I was cold and brought me a warm blanket. I wish I could remember her name. She had such a friendly personality.Anyways, 8hrs total was absolutely ridiculous. So that’s why there is one star. The staff that I mentioned above get 5 stars. They were great.

My mother was taken to this useless hospital because of seizure activity. The care given was substandard. The doctors and nurses are incompetent . They know absolute nothing about seizures or any medical diagnosis. My mother was in this mess for almost three weeks and not once was a neurological assessment done by a nurse or a doctor. I was told by relatives not to take my mother to this hospital which has a terrible reputation in the community but I felt that at least they could treat seizure disorder. Their treatment of seizure disorder resulted in the death of my mother. I am appealing to all in the community not to take your loved ones to this hospital.

It is always a stressful situation when someone you love is in the hospital but I am very happy with the efficiency, care and compassion my family member is receiving. Two standout nurses are Rose in the ER and Will on Pavilion 3. I know they are so busy yet they are always receptive to my calls and were kind when I visited. Doctors stop in frequently and are addressing issues not previously addressed in other hospitals. My family member was impressed by a personal visit from their dietician and is enjoying the food. I met one of the dietary techs last night (I’m sorry I didn’t get her name so I could commend her) and mentioned the delight with dinner and she made a personal visit to my family member to learn more preferences. Medical care is important but so are dignity and customer service and your hospital is “hitting it out of the park.” Thank you for all you are doing to please our family.

My grandpa was admitted to the hospital Thursday evening via ambulance. Friday, the doctors informed us that he was not doing well as he has been sick for a long time. Yesterday, the nurse Zoha around 6pm Facetimed the whole family so we could say our goodbyes with her own personal phone voluntarily (we did not request this, she did this on her own). We knew the medical team was keeping him comfortable but with the visiting policy d/t COVID, we could not all physically be there. Zoha RN took the initiative to do this herself- with all the demands and tasks with nursing, she still made the time to go above and beyond her duties. She did this so that we could all have one last moment with Grandpa/Dad/Great-Grandpa. She deserves 5 stars- I am a nurse myself and I know how busy the days get. Thanks Zoha for helping us let him know we love him; you are an angel.

Walked in to Emergency with chest pains, dizziness and nausea. Without a local PCP, I had to take my chances. Glad I did! Within minutes, I had an ID on my wrist, was sent to the ER wait room and had not sit down by the time they called my name. Blood was drawn and tested and I was sent to the Observation unit where I stayed the night. Even though what ails me has not been confirmed, it wasnt a heart attack. AK, Erik, Cynthia at the Observation unit where wonderful. Dr. Jackson (cardiologist) charming but to the point. Even the transport people who wheeled me around all the scans, ultrasounds and additional testing were friendly and respectful. Steve (scan) and Linda (sonogram) were professional and attentive. To all, thank you for your help, care and professionalism.
