This is my hospital/health care facility. In my opinion, the entire staff from top to bottom are the very best. I appreciate and absolutely love the care they provide here. Not only do they provide the best medical care; they support, motivate and encourage. Truly, here at Truman, they take the art of helping/healing you to the next level...

Upon returning back here from another state that had worse health care for veterans, my first doctor refused to schedule well woman check up, then dental cleaned my teeth but refused to do a filling on cavity without COVID test, then new primary care provider also refused my well woman check up, because of my age and have had a PARTIAL hysterectomy, and that same appointment wouldnt listen to family history diseases, and not only communicated poorly, but was more focused on herself than me. Very disappointed in this facility.

They sent me this sports drink in the mail. I had to flavor it with lemonade mixes just to mask the gross taste. The stuff still went right through me. I was up all night with diarrhea. If I was rating them on their sports drink recipe Id give them a 0/5 for the flavor alone... but the colonscopy went super smooth and the doctors & nurses were very kind. So 5/5 it is.

Ive heard horror stories about other V.A. facilities, but the Truman V.A. is the best. I always get seen quickly and on time. They have treated me like I was their only patient, and that the world revolved around me. I cant imagine how anyone could get better care. They even went so far as to call me everyday after my surgery just to see how I was getting along. As a cardiac patient I can truly say that they have saved my life more than once! In this situation we all find ourselves you guys are still taking care of us; as well as intelligently screening to keep everyone without it safe. You all took on a craft and learned skills that everyone else would either die or suffer in pain without your support, way before any virus hit the country. It serves several states around Missouri. I have been able to get a same day appointment .. Have a Pet scan and Cat scan done within 36 hours. Have treated me every time with the highest respect. Just had open heart surgery... Was totally impressed with the surgeon and staff. The ICU unit is not even a year old... State of the art technology. So for me... They are nothing but awesome!

My father is 84 years old and can no longer drive. The hospital and its clinics are over an hour away. He relies on all of us (his children) for rides. We have to try to work around our on jobs to get him there and we dont mind. However, they offer no assistance and make absolutely no effort to coordinate his appointments with the various specialists he sees. This results in multiple trips within a 2 week period when it could have been one or maybe 2 trips at the most. They still charge him an arm and a leg for care despite being low income. Additionally the various specialists do NOT communicate with each other at all meaning several things have gotten missed. My father has received the poorest of care from this hospital and the clinics. I only gave it 2 stars because some of the staff do try as hard as they can. I cannot express the hurt and concern I feel because of the way our veterans are treated. Please try to do better by your patients.

This VA is packed full of those kind of people that would work for free just to help a VET, wait they do. The volunteers a such a super group of people and yet I see people just walk on by or ignore a Hi! From them as they pass. One younger gentleman posted by the elevators to provide guidance to those lost, and he had not even served but his Dad did. Take time to say hello to them.As far as the doctors, I have had one My wife and I didn’t get along with, but switching was easy and they got another doctor for me in the White clinic who is great! I have been going here for about 25 years now. My perception is the doctors can use more help and shouldn’t have to take time to escort patients back and forth, but it’s their system. The pain management section really care to help everyone, and the doctors that I have met are really good. The labs techs are nice and as painless as they can make it. Often taking time to ask how you’ve been doing. They now have a good coffee shop, of course. And other places in the hospital are the nicest and most caring staff and doctors. They honestly want to help. It’s a busy place of course. Sometimes parking is a challenge so use the free valet parking if in a hurry even with the parking garage that’s sometimes full. Sometimes it’s a cattle chute, because the people in front and back need to be seen too. That’s all okay. All I can say is the Columbia VA is full of people that make this VA a place worth going to.

My husband and I recently had to move nearer toColumbia. We had been seen at the Kansas City VA before this. I have to say, in comparison to KCVA, the Truman VA is terrible. First, people are not friendly at all. There is no sense that it is a veterans hospital. At KCVA, there are volunteers literally everywhere--there is always someone with a smile who asks if you need anything or if you are being helped. At Truman, my husband had an appointment Monday at the Blue clinic. While we were waiting an old man came to the desk to ask about an eye exam. The male receptionist tried to explain to him about having a primary care provider who would set that up. But the old man was new to Truman and didnt understand. Instead of HELPING the old guy, this young receptionist just kept repeating you have to have a primary care giver before you can get an appointment. This rudeness would never have happened at KCVA. The receptionist should have directed the old man to whoever could help him GET a primary care person. Instead, the old man got mad and left (with no knowledge of how to get a primary care provider) while the male receptionist and his 2 female coworkers made fun of the old man and laughed about the incident. This type of lack of respect is rampant throughout the Truman VA. The doctors weve seen are fine so far, but the workers are NOT VA friendly at all. And they are not quick with appointments either. Often Im standing at a reception window while the girls are chatting and Im waiting to be helped. Maybe they are understaffed, but all of the criticisms Ive ever heard about a VA hospital are pretty much the case at Truman. They need to take some lessons from the KCVA in how to act and how to treat veterans.

Traveled to Missouri last week to be with my dad. He ended up being admitted and I walked in to find him with blood soaked gauze in his right nostril. He had a swollen right leg and foot. They had started him on heparin when he is already on Plavix, another blood thinner. He had apparently suffered a spontaneous nose bleed that took all of that night, the next day and into the next morning to stop. The ENT ended up packing his nose 2 times. Imagine my surprise when they are telling him there is nothing that can be done that he needs a nursing home for his leg swelling. His leg is contracted they say. Only he was walking 2 days prior. Contractions take quite awhile to develop. The nurse then asked what had happened to make his leg swell, my dad replied that he had bumped his knee on his steering wheel adjustment. My jaw dropped, should they have asked before starting such a dangerous med on a patient who is already on one blood thinner. And should they x ray said leg? I guess not, imagine more surprise after massaging his knee and lower leg the swelling is fading fast. Down to just an area around his ankle and he was standing within the hour. Why then would they still be trying to put him in a nursing home after learning he had care at home and a daughter there that said she would take him home with her. They said he needed to remain in Missouri to see his heart team for outpatient tests, even though he lived here last summer and saw the team in Biloxi. It took many hours and several different staff members being told we aren’t nursing home ready yet to finally release him home with home health therapy. Now he is back and they say he needs his leg amputated for sores that can’t heal with his blood flow problems. Ok fine, but can we maybe put the stents in that he was told he needed a year ago when his heart stents were placed? The sores they speak of were not present last week and the nurse says they are small and not open yet. Why amputate the leg of a man who most likely would not survive surgery due to his heart condition and bleeding risk. I will let you know when I do. His family wasn’t called, we are on the list. Neither time. And the vascular team isn’t returning a call. We have informed nurse and dad to deny surgical consent. I’m praying they don’t take him back at 730 am when we haven’t asked why they are skipping the stents that are scheduled for the 27th and jumping to amputate. Waiting on the dr to call. Will update if he is allowed to be fully informed or not. I must add I left word to have someone call me and explain this heparin incident and have not gotten a call, that scares me. As does him being placed on surgery schedule for 730 am with no calls to any of his 4 children, and no call back.

I volunteer in transport and seen by physcian myself. 99 percent of patients say the staff are excellant. I always ask them when I transport them. The staff always treated me with respect. I have heard families asking about why cannot coordinate appointments. Staff try, but every clinic does not meet every day and sometimes full. Try to meet all town physicians on the same day. Practically impossible. Patients come well over 100 miles to come here, rather then go someplace closer.

They dont even have an OBGYN on staff. At first things were moving along well until we hit the Speciality Surgery Dept then it went to hell. I have called many people asking for an explanation as to why the ball was dropped and everyone has ignored me all the way up to Dr. Patterson who is head of the regions hospitals. Ten days ago I took her to the ER there in Columbia and the Docter looked at the clock then us and said..What do you want me to do?. I also complained about that with no response. The people who work here are absolutely awful people. My grandpa went in last week because he was having complications with his breathing. We heard that theyd probably keep him around 20 or so days to monitor him. We were basically waiting to hear from them so we would be able to get him in an assisted living community. He had a heart attack on Friday 5/1/15 and none of the staff contacted our family. We had no idea that this had happened. We didnt find out about this until the following Monday 5/4/15, around 12pm. We were told that he was unconscious and is on life support, which gave us time to visit him in his last moments. Around 4pm, we got a call saying that he had passed. As soon as I got off work, I rushed up there. I was hysterical. If they had called us on Friday, we could have spent some time with him but they felt it wasnt necessary. He died alone. No loved ones around him. Nobody that cared for him. Nobody that knew who he was. Alone. I was not able to say goodbye to him. We were not able to tell him we loved him. Nothing. Our family was robbed of our last moments with him and he was robbed by not going in peace and love. Its a disgusting thing that they did to him and our family. I cant believe they would do that to a person, let alone a veteran. Despicable...

He was given nothing until around 10 when I asked them shouldnt he be given a few supplies, i.e. Cup of water, denture cup, etc. I stayed with him last night and no one nurse or Aid that came in to work with him have cleaned their hands as they entered the room. I have now requested that all staff clean hands on entering his room. Breakfast was french toast and oatmeal, no protein, no cream for the coffee and nothing that had any nutritional value for a diabetic. This place is the absolute worst. I dont know if its because I am from a younger generation, but I expect a little more from a VA than I did from sick call. I have never got into an appointment in a timely manner. The least I have waited is a month, and when I went in for PTSD related issues I was offered an appointment 37 days from then. It appeared that I was an inconvenience because I got there at 4:10 and they close at 4:30. Wouldnt let me see a Dr. Nurse kept complaining that she was going to miss her bus. No Wonder The Veteran Suicide Rate is at 22 per day. You cant go to the VA for help. This is not the first time I have had issues. Have had a dr. refuse to see me because I was 5 minutes late due to construction on the VA having traffic stopped. I could see her in her office talking on the phone the entire hour I waited, only to have her come out and get her next patient and tell me thats what I get for being late. I was there for counseling. I have been to other VA clinics and had great experiences, rarely have I had a decent visit here. It appears that most of the staff is pissed off. Im not ok with that. If you are not a pleasant person, dont work where you have to greet people. Customer service is horrible. I hate to lump them all together because I am sure that there are some great people that work here. As far as I am concerned, if you work in the mental health department and you ever act like you dont have time for someone, you should be fired immediately. 22 veterans a day.
