On my first visit I received a massage and facial. Both the masseur and esthetician were polite and professional. The atmosphere was very welcoming and comfortable. I would definitely return.

Came to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday. He has never had a massage before and was so pleased and relaxed l. We had a couples side by side massage with Elise and JovaniAbsolutely amazing!

I usually avoid these chain places, but I wanted to get a good facial at the very last minute and was able to get in. Hana was my aesthetician and I thought I had an exceptional service. I’ve had a lot of facials at a lot of different places, and I am fairly picky.

I took my significant other here for his birthday. I went in with high expectations and considering the money we spent on a 60 min massage and facial we literally came out paying $600 with tips included. However everything was just ok. I was expecting a lot more professionalism from the staff workers. The staff were talking about each in a negative way. They were discussing who has who in the other rooms and whom is better than the next.. The ambiance was just ok and honestly I wont be back. I wasnt impressed. The young lady that did my facial did a very good job.

MY MASSEUSE WAS NOT VACCINATED! After my massage was over, she informed me that her decision was, for her, a personal choice. Though I AM vaccinated, I was still worried about possible future health consequences on me. I was angry and spoke to the manager. She said, Were not allowed by law to ask whether our massage therapists are vaccinated. That is a BS policy. I had just been asked to fill out a form and show MY vaccination status to them! The manager also tried to justify having this masseuse working directly on customers by saying, Well, this is all so new to us, were still trying to figure out all the Covid regulations. Also BS. This pandemic is a year and a half old!I normally dont post complaints about a business, but Im posting this because Im frankly horrified by the practices of this company. Hand and Stone Massage allows unvaccinated workers to massage clients in an unventilated room for an hour -- without telling the clients about the masseuses vaccination status beforehand so they can make an informed choice! This is beyond irresponsible. If I, or another client, had contracted the virus through this therapist and became ill or died, this would be criminal negligence on the part of Hand and Stone.I should mention that the masseuse was wearing a mask when I could see her (most of the time I couldnt ) but it was not even a medical mask, it was a loose, flimsy one.Why, I wonder, are the employees of Hand Stone granted the option of making a personal choice that endangers other peoples lives and health? There are few businesses, after all, that put people in such sustained, close contact in windowless rooms. This practice denies its clients the same opportunity to make an informed decision as its staff (unless they directly inquire about it to the massage therapists themselves -- the front desk refuses to give clients medical information.) I did ask my therapist directly, but many people wont, because they assume that, by June 2021, all staff members are fully vaccinated.

Havent been to this specific location for services, but called to transfer a package to a friend. Staff was wonderfully helpful and went above and beyond to help me surprise my friend with a little pampering!

A lot of pros, but I expected a lot poor. One star for effectivness. One star for technique. Felt basic and amateur. I expected a lot more from the chain. I was really impressed with all the safety procedures. It made me feel very safe and that the business respected and valued my health. That alone gave it a lot of points. Facility was nice. My massage therapist was very sweet and friendly. However, I was really disappointed in the massage results. It was overall relaxing, but did not do enough to remove any stress in my muscles. I wrote in the intake form as well as verbalized areas of attention and this seemed to get no extra attention at all. A lot of time was spent on areas of my body that did not need extra TLC and very minimal time was spent on the important areas mentioned and stresses. This was one of very few times where after a massage I did not feel completely relaxed and satisfied. Probably not the worst massage....but second worst.It almost felt like I needed another massage. On top of that, three days later while I was turning in my sleep I pulled a muscle in one of the problem areas not properly worked on. That has never happened after a massage and so recently! I feel a bit like my money was not well spent and it is very disappointing as the pain is so severe I will be needing another massage asap. Money wasted when I probably could have just asked a friend to give me about the same quality massage.The reason I get messages is for general health maintenance so things like this dont happen. It is really unfortunate because I can tell the place is quality and the massage therapist is very kind and even good at what she does except not really applying the communication we had at intake to the massage itself had really severe consequences. Ouch. :( wish I had gotten a discount .

First the staff was absolutely wonderful. I took my wife and daughter there. For Wifes birthday her first time too. Hand & Stone made her feel like a queen and took care of them both. THANK YOU Hand & Stone. 🙂

Very bad experience this time. I have a membership. And just because one was running late it is considered no call no show. Do not mind paying 50 percent. But at least still take someone in. Not happy at all. I have informed corporate as well.

I came in and wanted to receive a massage because I was having a good amount of back pain. I scheduled my massage and the process online was super easy. On the day of my massage, I received an email asking me to fill out intake forms that I was sure I’d filled out my last time going in. Upon arrival, the front desk receptionist was very nice and check in was quick and simple. However, I noticed that the managers appeared very annoyed. They began to talk to their receptionists as lesser than and it seemed as if they were belittling them. I’m the kind of person that values how a business operates as a whole and I could tell that the managers did not treat their employees well. The manager seemed unable to make eye contact while talking to me, clearly lacking common communication skills. I will not be returning to this business— not because the service was poor, but because of the staff.

I had an excellent experience at Hand & Stone Spa! I called last minute on my birthday and was fit in for a massage and facial. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. I had my massage with Jared who listened to my preferences and areas of tension. I set the type of pressure and Jared responded well and gave me important feedback. Very beneficial. My facial with Maggie was divine; what a friendly, warm and knowledgeable person! She did a meticulous job and taught me so much about facial care and my skin concerns. I left the salon feeling invigorated and happy!

I came in looking for a massage for pain in my back. The therapist was great but customer service was far from it. The manager was extremely rude to me and refused to make eye contact. I also noticed that he was also extremely rude to his staff working there. He made very rude comments to both the receptionist and the massage therapist and it was very uncalled for. It’s a shame that the customer service was so bad because the massage was so good. 3/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

Website says the massage is an hour. Confirmation email said the massage was for one hour. The massage ended up being for 50 mins (technically 47). The massage was mediocre at best but that’s not the therapist or the venue’s fault. Merely preference. Likely will not be returning.

It wasnt what I expected. I figured this would be a hot stone massage. But the stones were used about 1/4 of the time. They were not enough and dont do placement stones. Which was something I looked forward too. However, Cody did know what he was doing as far as deep tissue massage goes. However I had to find my own towel in their cupboards to wipe up the massage oil. Didnt want to oil up my tshirt. All in all. It was a good massage. Not what I wanted or requested.

David was amazing. I was having so much muscle strain in my neck it was creating headaches and he did such an amazing job. My headaches and ear pressure are completely gone. I already booked him again. This place is so clean and relaxing the moment you walk in. Highly recommend!!

This was my first spa experience ever. The staff did an excellent job going over the process, making sure I was comfortable, and providing great after care tips. Andrea and Rick were absolutely wonderful! I will be back soon!

During my last visit, Was very hurt by Cody and the receptionist. I felt this was subtle racism, again. When I arrived to the next session, they assigned me to another therapist without telling me, and lied and said they switched up because Cody was to busy and that the new guy is a great therapist. Cody no longer wanted to work with me because I was late for one appointment (out of three) and because he didn’t receive a tip from the previous session. i was filled with disbelief. I enjoyed our previous visit, felt he was a great guy and therapist. But I feel as though I was wrong. The receptionist made excuses for him, and defended him. She sounded condescending, talking to me as if I was a child, suggesting other therapist. i then proceeded to cancel my membership.

Worst massage I have ever had. Asked for full body and Kitty massaged my neck and my thighs. And she was not good at it. I had a gift certificate so that was even more disappointing. Would not recommend Kitty. I have to think twice about ever going to Hand and Stone again.

Kodi is the best. I highly recommend for deep tissue massages. I will be going back in a week or so and purchasing a membership. Definitely check this place out!

I didn’t even want to review this place but after getting two emails requesting My review I figured I would.I purchased a one hour hot stone massage. Massage started at 1:09 and ended at 1:57 - less than 50 minutes. At the start of my massage Kody asked if there were any particular areas in that were bothering me - I told him my neck and the tops of my shoulders were cramping - but that didn’t mean I wanted the rest of my body ignored. After working on the area for a few minutes he told me that he would like to spend the entire session on just my neck and shoulders - which was awkward and I should have spoken up and said no but I didn’t. His touch in the beginning was really light and I requested more pressure. He said deep tissue was his specialty and proceeded to dig his elbows into my shoulder blades the rest of the session. At a couple points I said it was too much and he let up pressure but then went back into it. It was so uncomfortable. My upper back is totally bruised and sore to the touch. Plus my neck and the tops of my shoulders (which were the areas bugging me most) are still cramped up.The hot stones were only used on my back 3 or 4 times. At the end he asked what I thought of the stones and I said, “they were fine, but I wouldn’t pay to have them again since they weren’t really used”. He said he felt I responded better to hand manipulation. There were several points where I felt he was telling me what I needed and what he was going to do rather than asking me. The only times he really asked me if I was comfortable was regarding the temperature of the stones. So again, like 3 or 4 times.The place is really clean, the staff are kind, online booking was easy. I wouldn’t go back or recommend it.

I had a lovely Mother’s Day gift of massage at Hand and Stone. Ian was thoughtful and took care with particular sore spots. I was greeted warmly and with respect by the front desk staff. Thanks, all, for a great Mother’s Day treat!

On Valentines Day, I tried to schedule a couples massage. Wasnt able to get a couples massage but was able to secure two individual massages (not sure why though since we started at the same time.) My wifes massage was very good. My massage was the worst Ive ever received. I stopped it after 30 minutes in and thats only because I was being kind. The staff was kind and the facility was clean. Just had the wrong masseuse.

Entering Hand & Stone, I was warmly welcomed. I quickly was lead into a comfortable and relaxing environment for my scheduled massage. As usual, I received an excellent massage from a highly skilled massage therapist, by the name of Sandra. From my experience(s), it is obvious the spa has high expectations for those who work there. Being very particular, I appreciate the consistency and good care I receive every visit and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

This spa is fantastic! Clean, new and very upscale and upbeat feeling. The staff was very courteous and professional. I was brought back for my massage therapy session exactly at the time I was told. I had one of, if not the best massage I’ve ever had. The owner should be commended for such a well trained and professional team. I HIGHLY recommend this spa to anyone wanting a clean, professional and enjoyable experience.

David did a great job. I thought I had a big knot in my back from trimming trees. He was able to identify that it was a torn muscle and he addressed the spot in a different manner other than deep tissue massage (which I thought I needed.)

Theres only one certified Male at this location and I must say he worked wonders ! I recieved a prenatal massage because Im 35 weeks pregnant. I was very hesitant at first being that he was a Male and the fact that my body was already sore and I didnt know if hell be too rough. Turned out to be the best massage ever. He released all of the stress in my neck and back. Heck I went to sleep and woke up drooling ! He was very gentle and walked me through every step ! Now when I go back Ill only request him. Sorry I cant remember his name at the moment but when I do, Ill update my post ! Thanks again hands and stone !

I had a relaxing facial with Brodie. Addressed my skin concerns well and I appreciated her blue light recommendation. Sad that I am leaving the area and won’t be able to continue progress of my skin concerns with her because she’s a great aesthetician.

I was recently at Hand and Stone in Lakeview and had a great experience. The facility and the staff were top notch and Dr Fred (the owner) seems to be a great guy. I really sensed that they cared about me as a person, not just a client, and went out of their way to make sure that my experience was the best possible. All and all the place has a great atmosphere and vibe. I will definitely be back!PS when you go make sure you have some of their Osmotic water - I am not really sure how to spell it but it was really good and supposedly really good for me - and complimentary!

This was my first experience at Hand & Stone and it was wonderful! Natalie was a thoughtful and VERY effective therapist; my massage was really really great. I will definitely return.

Very relaxing

I had a 90 minute massage scheduled for Saturday night. I got the cold stone add on. The massage therapist communicated to both me and the manager that she did not know how to do the cold stone. Then after I was done, I noticed that I received a 60 minute massage instead of a 90 minute. While the massage was great, I dont appreciate the unprofessional atmosphere. I am a busy professional and its hard to schedule time for self-care. This location needs to work on training their staff. I am not sure if I will return.

I was developing a tension headache and my neck was painfully messed up from sleeping poorly. booked my appointment a few hours before, Natalie took excellent care of me. their intro rates are an amazing deal and I signed up for their monthly massage package also. my back feels a little sore today in a good way because of how much work I had done!

This is a great location, and I have had many great massages here, particularly from Simone and Ian. There are clearly a lot of talented practitioners here, and I would highly recommend. Massages have always run on time, and Ive also forgotten jewelry there multiple times (you think I would learn?) and each time Ive called and picked it up safely the next day.The front desk is helpful, lovely and genuine, and keeps appointments running like clockwork. My only complaint for this location is that it would be helpful if the front desk was slightly more knowledgeable about the therapists that work there, which I realize is difficult to do at a larger location such as this. Maybe by keeping a list of therapists and their modalities up front? Ive been lucky that my preferred therapists have been available and booking an appointment is usually a breeze, but a couple of instances I have had to book a new therapist and reception usually is a little unfamiliar with the therapists work, resulting in still a great massage, but not quite the specific kind of work I was looking for.

Great massage

My appointment was at six. When I arrived three minutes behind schedule, the lovely receptionist told me my appointment was booked at 6:15 (I thought maybe theyd set aside time for the new patient intake forms), but I didnt get into a room until about 6:30. Things happen, not a big deal. The massage itself was okay - Id requested that the therapist focus on my neck, shoulders and back - but very little work was done on my lower back (I believe one kind of stretch), and by the time I realized he wasnt getting to it, there wasnt time to ask for more attention to be paid to it. The lights were also kind of bright, which isnt very relaxing. I did like that he wasnt talkative - its always strange when someone over-talks when youre trying to relax. Heres the kicker - I paid $15 for an add-on of a peppermint scalp massage. It ended up being about two-three minutes of a fairly unpleasant and awkward over-the-hair fingertip kneading? Id had clean hair, and I apologized to him for my hair being thick, thinking maybe that was the issue, and he said something along the lines of, Its okay, its good for me to learn. Im not really sure why I was paying to be learned on. Probably wont go back - for that price, Im sure I could find a place that felt a bit more professional overall.

AVOID!!! Charged me $240 in total for a 1 hour massage with no add ons, and billed my card on file the extra charges without permission. Great massage, but they will scam you out of money. Kody is still great, but the management is falling apart. I have bought multiple gift cards through the years because they are the same price as the membership but they don’t lock you in. I called yesterday to see if I had any gift cards left. Spent 20 minutes with Nicole on the phone until she found it in my file with the help of another employee. She told me I was good to go for a 1 hour massage. I check in with no issue, get a fantastic massage, tip generously then leave. Bethany calls me later to tell me that there is no gift card. When I press her on the matter she tells me there are gift cards on file, but they are expired (why not be honest about it?). She tells me she has to charge me the full amount on top of the amount I already paid for a gift card. I would not have come without that gift card. They charged my card on file without my authorization. 1. Nobody goes to that place and pays the full amount. 2. Why am I responsible for their malfeasance? 3. Illinois and federal laws mandates that In Illinois, the combined gift cards and certificates should never expire, and never have fees. This is a shame because they used to be better than this.

I showed up 15 minutes prior to my appointment, as instructed. I was scheduled for a hot stone massage and apparently the “stones weren’t hot enough” at my appointment time so I had to wait about 40 minutes for it to start. To apologize, I was told that the $10 aromatherapy I purchased would be “taken care of”, which I greatly appreciated, and when I got home, I decided to check my bank statement, and it had not. I know. $10 might be nothing, but it upset me. Why couldn’t the stones be heated before my appointment started? Maybe there are processes I am not aware of, but this seemed odd to me, and quite frustrating. I definitely would have usually left, but I NEEDED a massage due to stress.The reason for my stars are for Henry. He was extremely professional and performed a wonderful massage. I wasn’t going to give a poor review, but I checked my bank account and was upset that the receptionist did not stand by her word.

I left feeling so relaxed, just what I needed.

However, as a first timer, my massage was only 35 minutes when I paid for an hour massage (10 minutes is supposed to be for information/changing of clothes but I still did not receive my full time). I was also told I could pay before my massage when I called first but the associate wouldnt let me. Lastly, I asked to mainly have my back done because I have really bad spots in my shoulder area. I mentioned my ankles too but emphasized the importance of my back. My back felt better going into the massage versus afterwards. Its as if the masseuse pushed some knots from my shoulders into my lower back. Ive had a massage before, but I wasnt in pain and sore afterwards like I am from this one..Id rather look for a different masseuse than return.

I am a former massage therapist at the 1832 N. Lincoln location. Fred, the owner, and his wife are rotten low life scum bags! They know nothing about the massage business, and they run a very dirty salon. They also hire therapists without them first demonstrating their massage skills, and by doing so show no concern for their guest. Fred does not pay his employees for all of their services that they perform and selectively pockets his employees credit card gratuities. He also selectively does not mail W-2 forms, and does not respond to employee requests for never received W-2s. There are plenty of salons in Chicago that are clean, reputable places that know massage, and care about their guests and therapists. This place is not want one of them. Please do not patronize a place owned by people that have no regard for their guests or employees. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!

So I get a massage about every 3-4 weeks- and I have since I was 18 years old. I lived with chronic back pain all of my life. Stinks. When the massage chain that is their competition came into town- I signed myself up- only to leave frustrated and disappointed. With Hand and Stone being a franchise- I was a little leary after my previous massage chain experience. But I joined- willing to give it a try. Since my primary residence is in Florida- I didnt know how smooth the transition would be between Florida & Illinois. Hand & Stone handles the back and forth membership program seamlessly.The other absolutely fabulous part about their scheduling is that you can get an appointment usually that day. I hesitate publishing this because they may become crazy popular and overbooked! But hey- great service should get great accolades.They are professional, inviting and every time I leave I feel refreshed. My most memorable experience was with a massage therapist named Daniel. I cant tell you how relaxed and therapeutic my massage was. I always go for the 80 minute treatment. He knew how to time the massage and the correct pressure to use. Simply wonderful.Dont overlook the chains while trying to find a great massage. I highly recommend Hand & Stone on South Michigan Avenue. A+!

2.5 stars: My experience was so-so. Employees were friendly and my massage was decent. Not the best. Not the worst. But average.However, a few things did bother me and left me wondering for a few days after if I received the best service possible: 1) My therapist commented on my tattoo and later my bra (as in, Ill let you handle your bra situation, meaning remove my bra after he stepped out of the room). I debated whether either comment was appropriate and have decided they were not. As a woman with a male therapist, it left me feeling quite uncomfortable, like I was being checked out during my massage.He also asked if I would like a longer massage because his other client failed to show. I said yes, he left for several minutes before confirming it was ok, but just as he started, he found out his client arrived (late) and so he rushed out by saying, You can grab a hot towel if you want. I had to grab my own hot towel out of the hot box and figure out what to do with it. Despite my leaving a solid tip, I feel I didnt receive full service (timewise and experientially), and it was a bit rude to switch things up on me with no apologies.Lastly, it took almost 30 minutes for them to process my spa finder credit for 2/3 of the cost. The rep was apologetic and offered me an introductory rate for my next visit, but that also placed a damper on my experience. I doubt Ill return. Too bad. I was looking for a place I could frequent.The main thing I would say is to address therapist behavior, even if its innocent, because this could become a big issue for someone else. (After this, I also dont think Ill go with male therapists anymore.)

I am a member of my local Hand and Stone. When I was visiting in Chicago, I went to have a massage at this location. It was the worst experience. The masseuse took liberties that were not proper. I had stop him multiple times when he was encroaching in private areas. I told him I was uncomfortable. Ladies, I would ask for a female masseuse at this location.

Booked a 90 minute massage but when we got there they had only booked us for a 60 minute. It was probably the worst massage I have ever had and I would definitely never go back.

AWEFUL!!!! If I could, I would have given this place no stars at all as my experience was awful and weird! I am an athlete who trains regularly and as a result, I seek deep tissue massage therapy every 3-4 weeks. I am a member of Massage Envy; however, I got so excited when I saw this location offering similar services near my home, a block away. I mean it doesnt get better than this. So, I stopped in person and very carefully described to the front desk receptionist my level of activities and the type of massages I usually seek to release muscle tension and tidiness. She recommended a therapist who is highly sought after for similar needs. I was extremely excited and looked forward to the appointment. I showed up on time, yet the front desk receptionist was too busy trying to sell a package that she didnt acknowledge me for 5 minutes. I watched the exchanged patiently and the person refused to purchase the package deal she was offering. at that moment, the therapist came out and approached me and eventually escorted me to the therapy room. I once again clearly explained to her the level of activities I do and specifically asked her to focus on certain areas, while applying heavy pressure throughout the treatment. She left the room for me to change and came back after a few minutes. By the time she started, I was already 15 minute after the hour. I figured she will accommodate me and add the 15 minute back at the end. Well, I was so WRONG! and so, she started, it was so weird. I felt as if she had watched someone give a massage on you tube or something and was trying to mimic. She had ABSOLUTELY no knowledge how to administer a massage period. It felt as if my significant other was applying lotion on me in weird motion. It felt so WEIRD, I felt so uncomfortable and extremely FRUSTURATED. I realized then that nothing I would say would make my xperience better as she had no clue what she was doing. I took a deep breath and decided to give her a chance. Maybe she has a different technique, maybe??. Well, I was WRONG once again, she went about applying lotion and pretending she was massaging my body with some weird and uncomfortable strokes for 20 minutes, while still neglecting the areas I specifically asked to focus on. Then, she spent the remaining time awkwardly massaging my neck. I was a bit concerned as she didnt know what she was doing and the neck area is fragile to mess with. Finally, she ended the session 10 minute to the hour. so, I spent $59.99 for 35 minutes of weird lotion applying massage. I mentioned this to the owner, who happened to be there at the front desk when I checked out. His response was I am sorry you had a bad experience; however, the therapist is very experienced. so, I asked how experienced, because based on what she did I doubt she is licensed. He said he didnt know. Is this for REAL? How could you not know the level of experience of the people who work for you? At the end, he still charged me for the full hour and asked if I would leave a tip?! WHAT? For REAL????I am never going back there again.I usually dont write bad reviews as I like to give local businesses the opportunity to grow and thrive, but this one really struck a nerve with me. specifically, the owner response. I hope this review will spare you the pain of dealing with similar experience and wasting you time and money.

I was charged the wrong price for a facial upgrade and the manager went out of her way to rectify the error and offer her apologies. She was very professional and empathetic.

My therapist was hands down the best

I had been a member since they opened until this month. I have given them over a year to try to get staffing and system glitches taken care of, but they just cant get it together. More often than not I was early and my session started late... but was not extended to get the full table time. One time I waited outside the building with the massage therapist for 45 mins because no one showed up to open the place. The final issues is after updating my card twice after it was stolen I got two very akward calls asking me to update it again. The tired call was to once again update the call and to tell me they had overbooked and needed to push my time back. You will get a good massage, but the hassle of trying to deal with the companys multiple system issues and constant tardiness has taken away any possibility of me enjoying my experience with Hand and Stone.**In response to the companys update below... once again they dont have their act together. No one ever said or mentioned anything about an ER visit. I also dont understand how in my 20 years of getting massages Ive never had many issues, but since going to Hand and Stone have been left standing outside for 45 mins, have been pushed back multiple times, not to mention a massage therapist that got peppermint in my eyes and then someone was in the ER. Seems like pretty bad luck.Last, I am fully aware of table time, but if you start me 20 mins late and still end on time that is not 50 mins. I was a member for almost a year and really tried to give the benefit of the doubt, but too often with the same issues that arent getting any better.
