Fun place to go for a date night, friends, or if youre looking for a different type of workout experience! Staff was very friendly and helpful with first timers and the price was extremely reasonable for getting shoes, harnesses, and chalk bag to use for your 2 hours time slot... would definitely recommend this place to friends or anyone that enjoys a challenge and a good workout.

Awesome rock climbing gym centrally located in San Diego. This gym is economical, and offers a lot of value for what you are paying. The setting is great, and done with frequency. The variety of indoor rock climbing here is great: lead, top rope, bouldering, and self-belay. I can’t wait to go back!

This is a decent climbing gym.The reason why I am giving it 1 star?In order to cancel my membership, I need to either show up in person or print a form, sign and send. I cannot even do it over the phone.I find this to be an abusive policy that essentially puts a time and convenience tax on cancelling. Every other service I use I can cancel online. I find this to be an extremely grimy practice, and I will happily change my star rating rating when they change this practice.

First time visitor here. Id recommend reserving a time slot for your first time. Theres only 2 auto belay ropes, the place is mostly belays that require a partner, but the lesson will get you right up to speed with no problem. Lots of boldering.Enjoyed my time a lot and would come back.

This climbing gym is one of the best! Ive been to several gyms across the state and this one is my favorite. Not only are the staff so nice and helpful, the facility is expansive! There is as much Bouldering as there is climbing, and for frequent flyers, the routes are changed regularly. Ive been a member for over a year and I love it. There are three facilities and all of them are just as amazing as the downtown location with equally stellar staff!

This place is good. Really good! The staff are super friendly and helpful. Always attentive behind the desk and very helpful in case of getting equipment, enquiries and first aid.The routes are great. Ranging from beginner to advanced. It doesnt get too crowded. I usually go in the evenings after work. There is a separate section for bouldering and its planned out very well. I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place and the people who come to climb.

They’ve had this on Groupon all month just for me to go on their website and see that their closed!!! They’re making money off of people by placing a service for sale that is not even available. I am beyond upset. The site says it’s closed in accordance with “state mandate” but other climbing gyms are open. I want my money back so that I can spend it at a gym that’s actually open. This is ridiculous.

So I never, ever write reviews about places online but I felt that I needed to leave a quick review for Vertical Hold: this place is AWESOME. They have some insanely friendly staff and a great mix of beginner and advanced climbs. Most importantly for me, this place is incredibly family friendly. I got my son a membership for his sixth birthday and the staff has made him and myself feel welcome each and every time we go in. This place is, simply put, perfect for a new climber like myself looking to learn the ropes with a young child.Go later in the evening if you want to avoid a younger audience and Vertical Hold becomes a perfect gym for adults as well.

Ive been climbing for 5 years, all over the country and this by far top notch setting. The gym is small, but as a climber its not the size of the gym, its the quality of the setting that makes a gym great. Their staff is helpful, kind and enthusiastic. It is clear that they love the climb. Theres a variety of route styles, slabs, overhangs, crack, mantle routes, would be cool of there were some off widths and chimney climbs but thats hard to come by anywhere!Absolutely love this place!! Shout ot to Kenny and Matt for making it such a memorable gym. Im currently from Chicago, but will definitely come to vertical hold whenever Im in town!!!

A really unique gym! This is the first time I had seen stone/pebbles as the ground in a bouldering/top roping gym. Fortunately, the boulder problems in this area are not as intense so simply moving a mat around will suffice. The actual bouldering area (separate from the top roping) is a cave like feature with lots of problems. Solid difficultly.

Review №51

This is the only negative review of any place Ive ever written, and I feel compelled to write it because at least as it is currently, this gym is simply not safe (at least for bouldering). Their overhung bouldering wall is padded by the flimsiest crash pads Ive ever seen in my time climbing, and underneath them is a thick layer of rocks (!!). What this means is that anything other than a fall onto your feet leaves you at great risk of injury. I blew a move on the ~45 degree wall and fell onto my back, snapping my head back and just about giving myself a concussion. Ive been climbing for long enough to know how to fall, but I worry for anyone who didnt that there would be far too great of a chance of serious, potentially debilitating injury.I spoke to the employee whose was there at the time and apparently they are supposed to get in new pads soon, so perhaps this review will be moot. But this kind of flagrant disregard for the safety of their customers is absurd and unacceptable for any climbing gym. To think that a landing area of rocks and half-inch foam are sufficient is neglectful. A shame, too, because the setting is really cool and the problems are quite fun.Note: no showers, barely a locker room. A real bad taste of an experience.

Ok so this may not be the most expert review since I am very new to climbing. I went to this gym for the first time today with my fiance and I had a blast! The gym was admittedly slow for a Saturday and that made for a great time for beginners. It was clean, fresh and the service was, as selected, excellent. The guy Jamie at the front was super helpful and very nice. I will definitely be going back for the punch card and when I start working up there in two months I will for sure get the monthly pass. Great place and well priced. I had a great time!

I was stoked to find a climbing gym in SD with auto belays. Mmhmm. Auto belays. More like auto belay - singular. Thats right, one auto belay. And whoever was using it would generally camp out on it cus there was such a long line of peeps wanting to use it. So the person would climb, fall, shake out their hands, wait, and then climb again - thus creating a very long back log. Also, not a fan of the rock pit and then you have to drag a bouldering pad underneath - some of those pads were pretty mushed down and didnt offer much protection. But people were friendly - and they tried to make the most out of the space they had. But please be honest - dont post auto belays as one of the features - simply put auto belay - that way we arent disappointed when we show up.

Love climbing here. Some friends and I have started coming here regularly taking advantage of the discounted military rate on Fridays. Even without that, its a great value relative to other gyms. The routes are awesome and bouldering is fun. It can get pretty busy at times, but there has been plenty of room to do SOMETHING, at least a repeat. My only complaint is that some of the employees are lacking in customer service, but with this activity, Id rather have someone that knows what theyre doing and be a dick than someone super nice and not be able to answer my question. Id give them a 9.5 out of 10.

We made reservation over the phone to bring a group of about 20 kids. We were given no advance warning about the lack of parking - there are only a few spots on the lot and the rest is street parking. The man behind the counter was less than pleasant. At the end, when it came time to pay, they tried to charge us extra for the patches for the kids, even thought there is no mention of an extra charge for the patch on their website, or any of their own paper work. The man got argumentative with us in front of the kids and families, very unprofessional. He ended up giving us the patches, and the kids had fun, so thats what matters most.

I have been to various rock climbing gyms on the west coast, Im a member at Vertical World in Seattle. I was pretty disappointed. For one, why would you have actual stones as ground for the bouldering section with pads on top?? why not just actually have cushioned floor??? I really didnt like the disorganization of the bouldering routes. Different color tapes distinguish the routes in a way that was chaotic and disorderly. I dont want to be confused if the hold is for me or not when im on an overhang above pebbles and a mat that may or may not reach me if I were to fall. Invest in actual color coordinated holds! The new Mesa gym is superior for sure.

I have only been to one other rock climbing gym and Vertical Hold with its convenient location with Saint Archer brewery right next door has instantly become my favorite rock climbing place. The facility is very clean and the staff is friendly, safety conscious and helpful.I took the belay class to get certified - it was confusing at first (especially for a novice), but the staff was helpful and it really clicked once I was able to belay a real person. They test you with you figure eight skills too. Especially since its easy to make pretzels instead. They have all essential gym climbing needs and have all new bouldering set up. They have a number of difficult climbs as well but is still a great place for all levels of difficulty from beginning to advance.Tip: On Mondays they have a student discount too, which includes gear rentals.

Friendly, helpful staff and interesting routes. I thought the routesetting was uneven in places, though, and the grades were definitely on the stiff side compared to most other indoor gyms Ive visited. There were only three autobelays when I went (October 2017) providing access to six or so 5.10d and below routes, so keep that in mind if youre going without a partner and hoping to do roped climbs.Theres a decent amount of bouldering, with a somewhat scary topout in the back. Did I mention that theres gravel rather than mats on the ground? :-)
