Not deserving of 1 star! They have changed so much! I called one week in advance. I traveled from Lower Eastside of Manhattan after receiving a call with an appointment time. When I arrived, I spoke and asked for Linda, the person schedule to do my hair. No one acknowledged me, and it wasnt until I turned to leaved that someone spoke! Long story short, the place was dark, dirty & dingy. And the women were rude. I am retracing my referrals and cautioning anyone with class to stay away from this hole in the wall. Take your money to a reputable salon.

I called the owner (Heather) early this morning and she told me to be there at 12 to be seen. I arrived well before 12 pm , a braider agreed to do my hair. I waited damned near two hours to be told that the braider had an appointment at 1:30 and that the next person would be able to see me after they finished a full head … I’ve tried to give Billie jeans a chance over and over gain never once did this “professional business “ communicate to me that you can 1 book a braider online and 2 that the specific braider who agreed to do my hair was already booked. They let me wait 2 hours the lady with the blond finger waves watched me sit in the chair for hours just to say welp I don’t know what to tell you. At this point Billie Jeans is over rated I’d go somewhere else if I were you I went to the Aicha African hair braiding store. The braider a are nice and they listen to you’re requests. “ leave edges out braid lightly “ very nice lady’s.

I have been going to Billy Jeans on and off for over 30 years. Its always a pleasure to see some old face and also some new ones over the years. I would high recommend Billys to anyone who may ask. I live in Queens and dont nind the traveling to Harlem well work the experience and also the service they provide

I originally wanted knotless braids but they claimed that they were unable to do it because of the length of my hair. So I decided to do the box with the curls instead. I also was unhappy with the length and the curls were falling out. I maintained it the best way that I can, oiling my scalp everyday as well slept with my silk scarf and silk bonnet. Not only that, but the braids were extremely tight, damaging my scalp. There is nothing that can justify my hair being damaged in this way. I paid $155.00 to have my hair in less than a week. If my hair was too short to grip, that should have been established from the beginning.

Ive been going to Billy Jeans for decades. The one place you can go to and know exactly what youll get. They are consistent! I love it. Currently appointments are required which is a nice touch. No more long waits. Fast Braiding Hair Technicians get you In and out! Thats the best part.

It is unconscionable that Billie Jeans call itself a reputable business. The level of UNPROFESSIONALISM!!! is beyond words. I had an Appointment for my 9 year old daughter on 6/4/21. This would have been her first time getting her hair braided professionally and she was very excited. After our initial greeting as we arrived at 2:40pm for a 3:00-5:00 appointment it went down hill from that point on.1. Still braiding another clients hair(I was told that it would take some time. What was the purpose of an appointment?2. The TONE and Temperament of whom appeared to be the Stylist LISA was AGGRESSIVE and UNPROFESSIONAL.ie: I asked some questions about the style and accessories, I was told on the phone that they had what I needed. They quoted an additional charge which was not quoted when I called. A customer has the right to ask questions when they are paying for a service and not made to feel that you are bothering/ annoying the person providing the service.3. EXCESSIVE PROFANITY ie: There was a child present and the amount of profanity that was being exchanged was inconsiderate and unacceptable. If you are doing hair out of your kitchen maybe you might think this appropriate, but not a place that advertise themselves as a reputable business.4. FINAL STRAW. I was offered another stylist to do my daughters hair, and I accepted. Sadly enough between the UNPROFESSIONALISM, PROFANITY, and a UNKEMPT SALON(VERY CLUTTERED, DISORGANIZED, AND UNCLEAN). I made the decision to LEAVE!!!Im not sure if the Owner and Stylists will get the opportunity to read this review, but if in the event you do I hope that my review doesnt fall on deaf ears. Please do a better job at EDUCATING your Stylist and maybe as a business owner you may also need to be reminded of the importance of Good Customer Service. Customers should be treated with Respect, Patience, and Kindness.Your services are not Free, so therefore when a person is paying their money there is a Standard and Expectation of Professionalism. Black Owned Businesses have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously and stay relevant. Lets strive towards Black Excellence and do a better job at representing Billie Jeans. What should have been at the very least a nice experience for my daughter, unfortunately turned out to be very unpleasant. Your Stylist/shop had the opportunity to gain a new customer and instead left an indelible negative impression for myself and my daughter. I explained to my daughter that Billie Jeans is not reflective of all Black Owned Businesses. When we know better, we do better. Lets do better, Owner, Management, and Stylists. I did manage to find another hair braiding salon for my daughter who demonstrated excellent Customer Service, Professionalism, and price was cheaper for the same style. My daughter walked away a happy camper and the stylist gained a new customer.

I think this place is wonderful I think they do a really good job I also think that they go out of their way to make timing fit your schedule more than their schedule because I tell you my wife had called at 1:15 in the afternoon and asked him if they would be able to do our daughters hair which would take about 5 hours or four and a half and believe it or not even that late in the afternoon they said sure no problem come here and be here by 3:30 and for sure we got there by 3:30 got there at 3:28 and they even finished her hair staying past the time the shot was closed and made sure that they finished it but the good thing about it why Im also running this review is because they didnt just finish it anyway they made sure it was done right it looked really really good and I like the fact that even it being late they asked if we were happy with it so I definitely would suggest and recommend this place for somebody that wants to get their braids done really friendly a little loud but you know what never hurts to be loud have a laugh maybe have a little something to eat when you get in your hair done but its definitely an awesome place

You can get there at opening time, and still wait hours. Not because theyre so many people, but because the actual workers dont actually arrive until hours later. Its ridiculous. Very good hair style quality. Very poor professionalism

I called to see if I can come from an hour 30 mins away they couldn’t work with me at all and told me the hairstyle I want is going to have them in the shop too late tf is the point of having the shop then if your not going to accept all customers . Very rude on the phone

I took my daughter here faithfully for about a year now and they always have done beautiful work, however, the customer service is horrible! Lots of arguing/bickering between staff members and people just don’t seem like they are happy to work there! The new location is nice but there is nowhere to comfortably wait. You would think they would take the amount of business they receive into consideration and have a decent size waiting area. Took my daughter to get her hair braided at about 4:30pm and was told they aren’t seeing anymore people because the workers “fingers are tired”. Website states they are open until 7pm and I have gone there later and have been seen.

I love this place but theres a lack of time management skills going on in this shop. No one wants to spend 7 hours in a shop to get their hair done period.. If you open at 7am then all of your employees needs to be there at 7am not after 9am. I refuse to do another 7:30am to 2pm shift again.

Came here on a Saturday. Got there around 7-7:15am, and there were about 10 customers waiting and 1 lady braiding hair. The stylists walk in around 8:30-9am and are not in a rush to get to the customers that have been waiting for hours and eat breakfast as you are sitting in the chair. Some stylists refuse to do certain hair styles and only want to do box braids. Overall they do great braids at Billie Jeans but be prepared to wait and hopefully u get a stylist that dont give you any problems. Prices are reasonable.

This is the second time my granddaughter has had her hair done there. They do a wonderful job and the wait isnt long. On Saturday the salon was very crowded and there really isnt much of a waiting area. Overall experience was interesting.

Stays crowded so prepare for a wait. Good service and atmosphere. Temperature cool inside on this hot and humid day. Patio in the back had a BBQ while I was there, was offering food to customers which was thoughtful. 👍👍

I went here because of a friends referral. I myself would never go back. First they make you pay before they have even started your hair. They told me one price over the phone and another after I sat down to do my hair after waiting outside for hours. (Over 3 hours). I got Senegal twist and it was not done correctly. They are different sizes (which I did not ask for). Some of the twist has bumps in it. Some of them are already coming out( its only been about a week). Also when I got home a friend of looked and seen that she either forgot to braid one row in the back or just didnt do it. Overall I didnt have a good experience with them. To me it seems like they care more about the money than the clients . I am a stylist myself and you should always make sure your client is satisfied with the work before they leave the chair.

I have been here since 10 when I finally got in the chair for my hair to be started at 4pm. The stylist said she had to run somewhere quick with her son and that she would be right back. Me being a mother of 3 said okay. She took a 45 min to an hour break. Then she came back with one of the worst attitudes I have ever seen. Then at 7:30 she decided she wanted to eat. I came all the way from Brooklyn because I heard they were good. They clearly have no regard for anyones time but their own. That is horrible. She finished eating and didnt even wash her hands but decided to jump right back into the loop. I can honestly say I will never come back. For this to be my first experience I am truly over it. It is 7:45 and my hair is not done. Plus since there are no refunds and they take the money first you are stuck with the lack of good service. If she said she was going to take a break it would not have been a problem everyone has to eat but from start to finish this has been a horrible experience.

Billy jean was recommended to me by my cousin who has done her hair there previously. I checked online and it states their open by 7am, I walked over on Sunday morning to find a few ladies already waiting.The shop wasn’t open until 8am no big deal, an older lady who seems to be the manager comes in. She doesn’t communicate what time any of the hair stylists are coming in. If anything she would around upset & annoyed when Clients would inquire what time they would arrive.I was finally sat down near 10:am to have the hairdresser tell me to wait that she needed to eat.Towards the end my hair did come out nice, I was Stopped in the streets several times asking about my braids.I decided to give it a second try taking my daughter this Sunday that passed, got there at 4 to be turned away although again online it says they closed at 5.I took my daughter somewhere else because if one thing there in Harlem is a braid shop on every corner. You want to support black business, but I refuse to support a business where management & employees have an attitude, no structure and no respect for people’s time!The braid shop I ended up did an amazing job and my daughters braids are still intact, something I can’t say for mine.

Went for balayage with Billie Jean for the first time and I must say I do not regret going for her at all. She was extremely attentive, took her time in understanding what I wanted and at the same time suggested where she felt she had to. 3 and a half hours later the result was brilliant and exactly what I had asked for. Highly recommended!

They are over crowded all the time. I have been here since 11am and I am just getting seen at 4:55pm. They braid so slow but love to talk to each other and have fun instead of focusing on getting people hair done, I am never coming here again. I called last minute Thursday night. They said I could come in Friday morning but no appts - just walk in - they open at 7am - i got there at 6:30am and was the first to be taken. Best if you get there early otherwise the wait is long. They are friendly, fun, and the place is clean. You wont be disappointed. I had my braids done by Sylla who as well is friendly and excellent at what she does. This was my first time and I would go back for sure.

I called before because it gets pretty busy here. I asked the lady how much was box braids for a child she told me the price and that my child should come immediately. We were 10 blocks away in a cab. When my daughter arrived they told her they couldnt do box braids it was too late. They made her wait 5 hours before someone started her hair and the braids were so ugly, uneven and rushed. I wouldnt recommend anyone to go here it not the same anymore.

I have been coming here since I was 17 years old. I am in my 40s now and BJs is still my go to for my braids. There is order in the store, the guys are entertaining and keeps everything at peace and moves the process along in a profess manner (you know lol) I would absolutely recommend. Let me be clear...this is not in and out when you come bring your patience with you, you will not be out in an hour. It gets busy.

I have to be honest. I like Billy Jean because some of the times, they know and understand how to style and braid your hair.However, the place is HORRIBLE and FILTHY. There are TOO many workers, too many customers, and too many owners, staff, boss, etc...On July 3, 2014, the workers were fed up and tired of the heat and the working conditions. THEY ALL WALKED OUT. One customer (who started the argument) complained about sweating (bullets). She was talking in favor of the workers. She made a complaint to the Board of Health. The workers, the staff, and the owners cursed-out the employees and they disrespected the customers.It was horrible, unprofessional, and I am not going back. Again, I love everyone but you do not curse and use profanity in a place of business. There were kids, young adults, and seniors sitting around and both parties (workers, staff, and the owners) were abruptly disrespectful and nasty.No one apologized to the customers. No one cared. They just wanted more customers and workers so they could make more money! BUT the workers one by one, left. After completing their customers hair style, they (African workers) left one-by-one!Close that place down! Or change and remove the management they have in place.

They definitely need better customer service!!! They pick and choose who they want to do your hair.I guess it’s which ever braider is done first is the person who do your hair. If I want a specific person to do my hair it shouldn’t be a problem - IMPAYING YOU !I’m very tender headed and asked the braider not to braid so tight she gets an attitude and tell the other worker “ I can’t do it because I braid tight “. Was told that they couldn’t do them that day because there were too many people waiting. I sucked it up and said I ll return tomorrow morning. Showed up at 10:30 , showed the someone what I wanted. She said ok. Waited for the girl to come in only to be told that it won’t look like the pic. I said fine I ll just get medium box braids only to be told I have to come back tomorrow. From my understand there is more work involved doing Faux looks so why not just do what will take less time. Was completely turned off by this experience at an establishment I ve been going to for years.

I know what Im getting they dont deviate from the listing price and pull numbers from the sky. It is what it is. Yes I paid extra for an additional person yes I got what I asked for and paid for. I went my regular girl was not there. Dont wanna be typing forever so long story short it depends on what style you get and what time of day it is. Two times in a row I went once for cornrows then the next for box braids. Both times I ended up with the only bald spot. If you want to leave the salon looking fabulous and satisfied for a very reasonable price, then BJ is for you!Insider tip: Find a person whose work you like and stick with them. Horrible place, the owner allows people from the neighborhood to shop you. I arrived at 8 and signed my name in the book and only had 6 ppl in front of me. I knew I would have a little of a wait, but ppl showed up after me and the owner took control of the book and started allowing them to get their hair done before me. When questioned she stated that the stylist doesnt do what you want (which was cornrows) and look in the book where she writes their name before your name. I stayed for about 6 hrs without getting my hair done. I was beyond livid and will never recommend this place to an individual.

If I could rate ZERO it would fairly describe what I went through at this salon. #1 I was a brand new customer who was clueless about braid shops. My desire was to have a great experience there due to their ratings. However, The heavy set lady there was one of the rudest, unprofessional, and incompetent individuals Ive ever met in a salon setting. This was more like a Saturday night raw ring verses a true salon. Why do they deceive the public by calling their business Billy Jean Hair Salon when it couldve been best described as Billy Jeans Braid Shop which wouldve made me stay away.When I called to get my hair braided she never informed me that the salon doesnt wash hair nor uses heat protector before using a blower dryer. So I was completely clueless as to what was about to go down.Error number one occurred once I got in there they sat me down as though they could careless what style I wanted by trying to detangle fine nappy hair with a brush. The minute I was approached with that brush I immediately informed the nice lady who was thin to please help me get a wash and to detangle my hair with conditioner once its been washed.Error number two, immediately presented itself once that nice lady started splashing water all over me and once I asked do you have a plastic cape the heavy set incompetent woman started beefing saying what you think this is some Dominican Salon.Error number three, happened once I noticed the thin lady turned on her blow dryer without putting any heat protector solution. So once I asked about using that on my hair the heavy set lady winded up out of control and then the thin lady started hitting me on the head with her blow dryer as though she wanted to knock me out, so I made a well informed decision to not bother letting them continue to proceed and asked if I could pay them so that there wont be any beef; however, the heavy set woman winded up saying we dont need your money, you could just get up out of here. Surely God at least gave that heavy set woman some kind of sense to at least know that the incompetent services there is of no value and this is where I see eye to eye with her and will refrain from visiting that dungeon of a place again.**** The first error should have been enough for me to have left that salon due to the lack of competency when it comes down to different types of natural hair. Who on planet earth detangles fine nappy hair when its dry???

The person that owns the place is a liar... The sanitary conditions is horrible I witnessed braiders holding the hair in their mouths and sucking on it before installing it in their clients hair. Holding combs in their own hair/ weaves that they use on their clients and please don’t let me get started on the shity job the lady that braided my hair did. It’s only been 2 weeks and my braids are unraveling...I spent $135 plus a $20.00 tip.. they also offer other chargeable Services like a wash and blow dry but you don’t know it costs extra until she ask for the money while you getting your hair braided. This place is piggy backing off of the Billy jean name but the service is not Billie Jean quality. The location I went to for s on 135th street in 7th ave. This place is TRASH!!

For many years when they were located on Lenox between 116th and 115th they were not perfect but good. I recently went to their new location on 135th and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. What a disappointment. Looks like they traded down in terms of space. They told us that they could not do my daughters hair since they close at 5pm. It was 1:30pm. We just decided to leave. My sense is that they are no longer the Billie Jeans I knew and loved. I wish them well but we will not be coming back.

Dont even bother. Wait time is long unless you come as soon as they open. The managers and workers are unprofessional. The braiders dont listen to customers request. Forcing people to walk out with hairstyles that dont look anything like the idea or picture people walk in with. The prices are made up in their head dispite the price list they have posted on the wall. The quality of the work could be found better in another low down unpopular spot anywhere in Harlem or anywhere for that matter so I suggest you give it thought and look on Instagram for someone that will lace your hairstyle without the headache. Unless you want to spend a fortune and walk out uphappy without anyones care.I WILL NEVER RETURN!!!!

I get here today at 6:10am took me an hour coming from long island driving. I sign my name on the sheet and put the name of the stylist down as well. I even told the guy who greeted me who I was waiting for. The time is 7:30am another stylist asked who I was waiting for. I said silla She called her on the phone , she stated she wasnt coming in and she had informed them yesterday. But yet I wasnt told that. I came all this way, my time wasted. If Im waiting for a stylist why should I get another one. There is a reason why Im waiting for a particular stylist. I will never go back to billy jean very unprofessional and if thats how they run business they shouldnt even be open. Very disgusted, and very angry.

Good place , you be specific about what style you want and who can actually do that style. Some of the stylist cannot do styles properly.

I really love this place. Ive been coming here for over 4 years, and Ive always been satisfied with the service here, theyre all professionals, and work very fast.

Hated it its nasty old and bummed out there. The hair dressers look a mess and its so nasty ppl everywhere getting there hair done it look like an airport waiting area then to top that they didnt even know how to do the style I wanted after discussing it over and over and showing pics they still didnt have a clue that shop should be torn down or burnt down. The health depth need,to make a visit I know it all major violations smfh never ever again

I have been taking my daughter here for years but Since moving to the new location the place is smaller, she had to wait 3 hours for hair to be done‼️That is my only problem.

Prices are reasonable and your hair will look great

Way different than it used to be. Not much for the drama that continuously unfolds. And thats going back years. But.... the prices are legit so.... puck your battles

Billy Jeans is a salon that most of my family and friends have frequented over the years for braided hairstyles. I have been going there for hairbraiding for over 20 years but it has changed so much over the years-good and bad.For one, when I first started going to Billy Jeans it was located a couple of blocks from the Apollo theatre on 125 Street and any style was $30.00! But over the years the braiders have changed and the amount of braiders have multipled. The price has definitely gone up over the years as well but now the quality of work varies with each braider and they are NOT all good unfortunately. The braider I had most recently spoke no english and I had to have other braiders translate to her what I wanted because she kept doing what SHE wanted!Now the workers dont even have there own spaces-braiders just find a spot on the floor. Because the quality of work has gone down I have tried others because several times I have experienced bumps from the braiding which I never had a problem with prior. My co-worker also recently had braids done there and developed bumps as well which bled.As a result, billy jeans for me is no longer THE spot for braids because I can get better quality from any braider I meet on a corner in harlem!
