This was the perfect spot to spend a night on our way across the state — if only the experience hadn’t been ruined by the camp host. The grounds were immaculate, clean bathrooms (with showers) and other amenities available. Our only complaint is how poorly we were treated by the camp host; he was extremely condescending and rude and followed us around as if we were doing something wrong. One example was during check-in when he asked if we would like to pay using cash or credit and my husband replied “whatever is easiest for you.” The camp host replied, “well, that’s a decision you’re going to have to make for yourself.” He made many other similar comments that were just unnecessary and rude. Given the choice of staying here again or continuing on to another campground, we would choose to stay somewhere else if this camp host was working.

This is site 26 and many of the sites are just like this. The sites are VERY close together with no room for anything except the camper. Ours had a picnic table but it was moved to the other side of the camper which is on the other site. Even with my small 18ft camper it was very tight. The sites are cheap and have full hookup which is nice, but we didn’t know what we were getting into and I wanted to make sure others don’t have the same experience we did.

First time at this campground. The sites are kept clean. Bathrooms and showers were clean and checked frequently as the soap and toilet paper were never empty. Jim, the camp host, was very helpful and friendly. He checked in with us after we were in our spot to see if there was anything else we needed. We will definitely go back.

Great experience, especially for pulling in around 7pm without a reservation. Camp Host was super helpful and gave us a longer site so we didn’t have to unhook. Level sites. Full hookups. Playground and paved road for biking kept the kids happy. Beautiful view & nice little beach and access to lake for swimming (currently closed due to blooming algae) Bathrooms were clean. Only problem we had were the dryers not drying clothes fully, which really happens about everywhere- just be prepared to give yourself enough time and quarters for 2 dryer cycles if doing laundry. Overall, very pleasantly surprised!

This campground is a hidden gem! It is easy to get to if you take the by-pass off the interstate and skirt the downtown to Main Street, then turn north to the campground. The campground is clean and well-maintained. They have sites that are definitely Big Rig friendly but not all, so just be careful when you make your reservations. The lake is beautiful and you can walk down some trails to a small beach. Some sites have a lake view but even those that dont are not far from the water.

Very nice small camping area. It was very quiet and peaceful. Camp host came up as we pulled in and said only 1 tent spot was open with electric so we took it. It happened to be right in front of his camper and as we walked around we were the only tent there. We had a very enjoyable time despite the camp host being rude. We will stop again if we are ever in the area again.

Very nice small city owned campground right next to Lake Mitchell. About 1-1/2 mile N of downtown, yet quiet. Choose your spot carefully if a big rig, only a few spots where you will fit but doable. Would definitely stay here again when in the area. Dont miss spending time at the Corn Palace. Great history of the area.

Pulled in around 9p after a long day on the road, host met us at the gate and helped us find a very nice camp site for the night. Despite camping next to the lake, the bug situation was not bad at all! Quiet, clean, nice restrooms. A bit of noise off the highway, but the bugs drowned it out for the most part.

Beautiful setting. Nice spots. Quiet although a train did go by in the morning close somewhere. No hot water. Told the guy on duty. He shrugged his shoulders and left- didn’t care. He seemed to be a real busy-body filling everyone around and standing watch late at night and then again very early.

The campground is a very wooded city/state campground, great location to the “The World’s Only Corn Palace”. We had full hookups and were lucky to get a pull through as our stop was for only one night. The site had an obstructed view of the lake and there was a path leading down to the lake from our campsite. People were walking through our campsite during the evening, but it wasn’t a big deal for us, as we didn’t have anything set up. Our site was asphalt and level, we needed 2 hoses to get from the water spigot to the coach. Free WiFi with no password and unsecured. Verizon worked great. Did not use bathhouses and don’t know if there was any laundry. I would definitely stay again if in the area. Site: 40 $ 39.41 @ night

We stayed at the Mitchell Lake Campground for two non-consecutive nights in mid-July. The campground is operated by the City of Mitchell and offers many RV sites with full hook ups and several tent sites with a variety of utilities provided. We did not book ahead/online but relied on the first come, first serve sites; on Mon/Thurs nights, there were many sites still available by evening. One cannot make a reservation within 48-hours of arriving but you can see day-of if there are RV/Tent sites which are available. We tented and both nights stayed over the hill by the lake in the G tent section. These four campsites offer potable water, close access to the beach trail, trash collection, and wonderful views of the setting sun. There were flat spots throughout the G section (G1-4) and it was easy to place our tent as well as park our car. Our neighbors were within eye site but wasn’t a huge issue. Both nights we also had a nice breeze coming through the site. There are tent sites in other sections which offer electric as well but we didn’t those were as flat.We met our friendly camp host while filling out the self-registration card at the front. He welcomed us and even stopped by later to make sure that we were getting in well. He also remembered us when we came back two nights later. The campground offers heated bathroom and showers, as well as a laundry and bike rental. There was also a playground and beach for the families and a little library across from the bath house. We were very happy with just how clean the bathhouse was and how up kept the sites were. The campground is located north of Mitchell and if you’re trying to reach it from I-90, we suggest taking SD 37 north. There are plenty of stores and food places within a short drive. Note that while not in the heart of Mitchell, it is clearly in a city; we heard very light road traffic and an early morning train whistle. Cell reception was very good, each of us getting 4+ bars.As said, we would definitely come back to the Mitchell Lake Campground the next time we’re in South Dakota. The location is perfect for heading to the Black Hills and the site is comfortable and offers appropriate services.

We stayed in a tent here for one night while passing through. The grounds are kept clean and the park is nice and quiet. The bathrooms are also some of the nicest I’ve ever seen at a campground! 10/10 recommend staying here!

Will never camp there again.they have the sites soooo close together, there was only like maybe 6 feet between my camper and 1 next to us,didnt even feel comftable to light a fire in the fire ring that the sparks might catch our campers on fire.all u had room for was the picnic table between 2 campers and walk around it.youre better off to camp in your yard.1 travel trailer must took him well over hr to even get his camper backed into his site his spot was sooo tight.our camper was on right.

Its super convenient : we arrived at 11pm, when the office is already closed. We paid by using just an envelope and leaving it in a box. The price is decent. The downside might be the noise from the road sometimes- but it didnt bother us. Overall, highly recommend !

Campsites are very small and close together. We waited to shower until 10:30 pm so there would be hot water. There are 2 showers in each Mens and woman’s bathroom. My daughter and I went in the woman’s. My husband and son went in the men’s. The water was cold, Luke warm at best and the water barely trickled out. I didn’t shower. My daughter tried. That was very disappointing. Nice people running the campground. The first night there though people had music loud and were partying all night. Things are supposed to get quiet at 10:30pm.

Review №39

Good campground. The view on the lake is great from the tent area. There are trails going down to a beach which is nice. There is water, fire pit and table on every site. The shower/bathroom house is a little far from the tent area but no big deal.

Great family-friendly, affordable campground, especially for tent camping. Comfortable, quiet tent camping spots available on a peninsula overlooking the lake. A short walk down to the beach and a playground. Only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because the showers/bathrooms left a bit to be desired.

Nice people and clean facilities with a little play area for kids. My main complaint would be that the sites are all pretty packed together, and that the tent sites we looked at (E & F) had no real flat spot. Also, while the bathrooms were clean, the mens room had three stalls, none of which had working locks!

Clean campground and well manicured but small. Youre kind of crowded in but the people are very nice. They do have water and electric hookup and some sites have cable hookup but like I said, the sites are kind of small.Bathrooms and showers are very clean but some of the showers have a push button faucet system and there is no cold water! The shower water is VERY hot, so please use caution if using. The toilet stall doors wont lock and because the bathroom ventilation system isnt used, the bathrooms are extremely warm.Because of a burn ban in Mitchell, no campfires were allowed even though campgrounds were exempt from the burn ban, this was the only campground who enforced it.All in all, its not a bad campground but in need of some maintenance and minor repairs.
