Great place to stay. No big monster campers allowed. No electric hook ups, so it is very quiet and make it more pleasant and easier to get in tune with NatureA must go place! (Should go)Meeting Theo was very nice. Great human being!

Amazing park rangers and campground. Lean-to was in great shape and so close to the brook. Went up cathedral and down the saddle. Thanks, keep up the good work!

Very nicely kept ground and the ranger is very nice. Roaring brook campground has many swimming areas (very clean mountain water) nearby including roaring brook and its one of the only campground besides chimney pond where there are 2 different trails you can take to the peak of Katahdin a.k.a Baxter peak. Helon Taylor trail to Knifes edge to Katahdin a.k.a Baxter peak, or you can take chimney pond trail to saddle trail to Katahdin peak a.k.a Baxter peak. The recommended route to summit from Roaring Brook Campground is start EARLY at like 5am on the Helon Taylor trail up to Pamola peak, cross knifes edge to Katahdin a.k.a Baxter peak. At this point it is recommended you DO NOT go back acrosst Knifes Edge, but rather take Saddle trail or Dudley or Cathedral trail down to chimney pond campground. If you are NOT ready for a rock climbing decent, take saddle trail to chimney pond trail/campground which merges with the Helon Taylor Trail at Roaring Brook about 1/4th of a mile from the Roaring Brook campsite. Pro Tip; If you get to Knifes edge and plan to pass the Chimney pond campground, you can see Chimney pond from the peak so its a reasonable decision for some people to drop their bags down by Chimney pond at this point as you will pass by it on the decent of chimney pond trail. Heres a few pics on the Helon Taylor Trail (June 2021) NOTE; Pictures are taken about 4,000ft. Up in elevation near Pamola peak and Knifes Edge Trail(pictured) on the Helon Taylor Trail. Be advised, even leaving at sunrise you may end up finishing the loop close to sunset so it is of the most importance if you plan on ascending Katahdin to leave close to sunrise.

Great gateway to Katahdin!! Lean-to was clean and convenient, if split four ways its only ten bucks a night. Wood can be purchased for fires for three dollars a bundle. Brook is right behind lean-tos for easy water access. Privy not too far off either. Lots of different trail options for summiting Katahdin, Im going back!!

Great campground with friendly rangers, parking is included for all sites and firewood is available for cheap. My only complaint is if you are staying here with the intent of hiking Katahdin or any other trails, make sure to call ahead to see if they are open. I stayed here the end of June only to find almost every trail is closed and it was never documented anywhere on the website or mentioned before reservations.

Booked 2 parking spots for July 18th on June 7th. Reservation was confirmed... They called on June 16th and cancelled our reservation. We had 10 people in our party who took PTO and already paid for a a separate campground. We are no longer going...I called and asked why they canceled our reservation (9 days after confirmation)...The only answer I got was “social distancing”, which has been going on since March.10 people who took off work and made accommodations for the trip...I asked for a manager/director to call me. I never heard anything back.Careful making reservations, because they may cancel on you.

We didnt stay in the campground but used the parking lot for day use. We got there early, 8:30 I think which allowed us to be the last folks to go in for a day pass (didnt have to do a three hour Moose pass) to Sandy Stream Pond, a World-renowned moose viewing and scenic area only a 0.4 mile hike to several trailheads. Unfortunately we didnt see any moose, it was a bit windy which effects their hearing, something to think about. We still enjoyed the spectacular scenery.

Stayed in the lean-to sight this past summer a couple times. It was so peaceful to have a fire and hear the stream while you unwound from the amazing views from the top of Katahdin.

8 mile drive on tote road from Togue Pond Gatehouse. Takes roughly 20 minutes from gatehouse to arrive at Roaring Brook Campground. Chimney Pond Campground is accessible by walk-in only from the trailhead at Roaring brook and is approximately 3.2 miles. All gear/supplies must be walked in to Chimney Pond Campground from Roaring Brook.

I have been camping at this site all my life. It is an amazing place to take a family. Ive stayed in the bunk house, tent sites and lean-tos... you really cant go wrong. Easy access of trails to the back-country like Russell Pond and to Katahdin via Chimney Pond Trail. Ive been to many National and State parks around the country but its hard to beat BSP... it will always be my favorite!

Great camping spot with close vicinity to some of the best trails in the park. Sandy stream pond is a 10 minute walk away where you can see moose daily. This would easily be a 5-star campground, but the ranger in charge gave us the worst experience weve ever had camping. At 8am on our departure day he came over to our tent and ripped the tent door open while yelling at us that we had to go, which was an extremely rude awakening and an invasion of privacy. We had missed the rule (it is one of many rules in the fine print on the website) that no tents can be setup on lean-to sites, but no one had mentioned it to us the previous two days that we were at the campground and there were notices anywhere on the campsite. We had no prior warning that what we had done was wrong. Make sure you follow every rule exactly as stated on the Baxter state park website. The way the situation was handled by the campground ranger was inappropriate and very unprofessional. Id love to return here but this experience has made it so that we will probably never return, which is sad because the park is so beautiful.
