Had dry eye. Was between situations and didnt have insurance but was desperate for relief. Saw Dr. Hamilton who put some plugs in to stop tears from draining. Cost $500 which, sure, is fine. Plugs didnt work because they were inserted wrong or wrong sizing. Doctor wanted to charge me another $500 to put in some plugs that have worked for me in the past. Charging twice for the same thing is ridiculous and seems a bit avaricious.Dont know what price the doc buys the plugs for, but I went to another eye doc and got it done for half the price.... and they worked perfectly on the first try.

I had the SMILE procedure done by Dr. Hamilton back in December of last year and Ive got to say, it was the BEST decision Ive ever made. From the start, Dr. Hamilton was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and made me feel very comfortable with what to expect during and after the procedure. There was no pain whatsoever and the surgery was done in just a few short minutes. The recovery process was almost nonexistent and left me with 20/10 vision!!! I have better than 20/20 vision now - measured about 20/15 one day post-op. The indescribable feeling of having that acuity in my own eyes aside, the surgery experience was fantastic. In fact, it was pretty cool. Not only that but I returned to work the next morning with no issues and my eyes felt totally back to normal 3-4 days after the surgery (except for some night vision starbursts which is getting better). I had LASIK.Dr. Hamilton was terrific. I needed this surgery soon to be eligible for pilot boards in the spring, and Dr. Hamilton changed his schedule to accommodate this so I could go in sooner, on short notice, without me asking. He was also very patient and helped me decide on the right procedure. You can tell he has a passion for what he does (he has published over 40 publications over the past 25 years on laser eye surgery), is a master at it, and he is a great guy to talk to!The experience:- During the first consultation, I met with Dr. Hamilton face-to-face. He answered my very long list of questions about SMILE vs LASIK, what machines he uses (the latest), his experience, etc. He studied engineering in the past so he showed me his performance data in a spreadsheet that he uses to fine tune the laser based on past data (he showed me that 60% of his patients see 20/16 or better after surgery). As an engineer myself, this made me feel very comfortable about doing it.- Before the surgery he told me exactly what to expect, which was calming, and throughout the surgery, he told me exactly what to do, which was very simple. It was remarkably easy and painless and I was out it what felt like 10 minutes, feeling like I was 8 again with perfect vision. The entire time I was in the room I was in awe of the machine and just seeing the process in front of me that was correcting my vision so quickly. It was so amazing.- Once you wake up for the first time after surgery you have a Spiderman moment where you try to put on your glasses and realize you can see perfectly without them. And then youre just in awe.

I got LASIK two weeks ago with Dr. Hamilton and from the initial consult to the pre and post-op visits, I had smooth, easy, transparent and straightforward interactions with the staff. Dr. Hamilton walked me through all the steps of the procedure both before and during to help calm any nerves. The recovery was as expected and the next day I could see perfectly. I just had Dr. Hamilton perform SMILE surgery for vision correction in April of this year (2021) and I would recommend his practice for anyone in the Los Angeles area who is thinking about corrective eye surgery. I first learned of Dr. Hamilton when I was a student at UCLA and he was the director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center. Since then, hes moved to a private practice just down the street and gets to focus more on performing surgeries. He takes the time to make sure you understand the different options available to you, answers every question you have to make sure youre comfortable with your decision, and walks you through the surgery that only takes a few minutes from start to finish. I had my appointment on a Monday afternoon and was back at work in the office by Tuesday morning. There was slight blurriness the first few days but my vision completely corrected to 20/20 in about a week. Some eye dryness and sensitivity to sunlight lasted for about a month but its nothing a pair of sunglasses and some eye drops cant easily take care of.Its been almost 2 months now and I cant thank Dr. Hamilton enough for an awesome job! He and his staff are extremely friendly so give them a call if youre even just curious about vision correction.

Im three months out from having SMILE surgery with Dr. Hamilton and completely thrilled with the results. I had been interested in getting laser eye surgery for years, and finally committed to doing it when I got a recommendation from another eye doctor I trusted. I knew I wanted to find a doctor that did the SMILE procedure - some doctors dont even offer it and I wanted the option - and read that Dr. Hamilton has been doing the procedure for much longer than most other eye doctors. Throughout our appointments and the actual procedure, Dr. Hamilton was professional, caring, and clear. He took time to explain everything and to answer my questions. I felt completely confident with his communication and ability to do the procedure. The surgery itself takes no time at all, and the results are amazing. I did notice some night flare for the first couple of weeks, but that has gone away. I use drops pretty regularly for the first six weeks or so, but now I use them once a day at most. Dry eye was one of the things I was worried about, so Im very relieved and happy that its less of an issue now than it was when I was wearing contacts all the time. Dr Hamilton just operated on my right eye, he removed the cataract & placed a multi focal lens inside. What a difference in my vision, everything is clean & bright, both for distance & near vision. He did my left eye 2 years ago with great success also. I wish that I had done my right eye sooner !He is a great surgeon. I would highly recommend anyone to him, but especially those who have had laser surgery in their past, ( maybe to correct near sight ) as this changes the shape of the cornea. Rex did my cataract surgery over 10 years ago. He just introduced me to durysta for my glaucoma instead of using daily eye drops. Now I have an inplant which automatically releases the daily drop which is great. No more daily drops no more sore and irritable eyes. The procedure was pain free and only took a few seconds to inject. Great Job Rex

Incredible results and the easiest process! I went in for a consultation and was recommended the SMILE procedure. 2 weeks later I was in surgery which took a total of 45 minutes in the office - 5 mins for the actual surgery time! My dad was mad he didnt have time to grab coffee it was so fast! Immediate results too - I could almost perfectly just a few hours later and now its 20/15. I cant believe I waited so long to get the procedure! Would recommend for everyone.

Honestly cant recommend Dr. Hamilton enough. When I began thinking about getting corrective surgery, I scheduled consultations at three different facilities. Rex Hamiltons office was the smallest facility I visited, but by the end of my consultation it was a clear standout. Out of the three facilities, Dr. Hamilton was the only surgeon who personally met with me. At the other locations I was only met by the surgeons associates. As a result the care at Rexs office felt more personal, like a local family doctors office. This level of care really showed after my pre-op, where Dr. Hamilton discovered an abnormality in my scans that none of the facilities caught. He found early signs of glaucoma, which is now something I know to keep an eye out for in the years ahead. A week after my first visit, I ended up going through with S.M.I.L.E surgery, which Dr. Hamilton recommended over L.A.S.I.K in my case. The surgery went through without a hitch, and it was a lot less stressful than I thought it was going to be. The operation only lasted 4 minutes per eye, and it was painless (at most, it felt like someone was putting in a contact lens for a few minutes). Its been a week since the surgery, my recovery is going well, and I can see without glasses for the first time in 20 years :)

I am a professional pilot, and therefore my eyesight is critical to my career. I am also an attorney, which means I paid a boatload of money to learn how to perform accurate, in-depth research. I spent a lot of hours over the last ten plus years determining what it would mean to get Visian ICL, and whether or not it was safe enough and accurate enough. I also spent a great deal of time researching which surgeon I could trust with such an important procedure.Dr. Hamiltons name came up again and again. I had been struggling to wear contacts for over two years after wearing them for nearly fifteen. I had two cataract surgeries with Dr. Hamilton. D. Hamilton eased my fear of something touching my eyes in our first visit. Both surgeries had wonderful outcomes. My vision was significantly altered in both surgeries, no pain , no stress , clear , honest communication. Modern eye surgery is beyond a miracle. Dr Hamilton removed my cataracts, surgery under 15 minutes per eye and provided me with new Symphony lenses such that within the time I left the surgery my eyesight was improved beyond measure. Better than when I was a boy my new eyesight is a miracle: colors now brighter, sharper, clearer, vision at great distances now a dream, I can see the craters on the moon again and close up Im good to use my computers without glasses. Dr. Hamilton did my cataract surgery a couple of years ago and beside an impressive skill level, I found him compassionate and warm. All my questions were answered and my patient care was excellent. That was at UCLA. Now hes in private practice and I have a feeling he has more leeway to really get to know his patients which seems to make a difference. I went for a yearly check up and found him friendly and approachable. I definitely recommend him...his new staff is also efficient and kind.

He used symfony toric lens and I can see near, far and on the computer. He spends time to explain and review everything. I have the utmost confidence in him! He just completed my husbands cataract surgery which was more complex due to Lasik surgery 20 years prior. Dr. Hamilton knew exactly what needed to be done so my husband would have the best outcome. He did a fantastic job and my husband is amazed how well he can see (1 day after completion of 2nd cataract procedure!). If you are looking for a top Ophthalmologist...look no further!

I recently had the SMILE procedure done by Dr. Hamilton. He was very thorough in his examinations and he took time to explain the procedure to me in detail and answer all of my questions which I really appreciated. I was diagnosed with cataracts in late fall of 2014 by my optometrist during a routine screening for my glasses. My physician confirmed the diagnosis and referred me to Dr. Hamilton who confirmed the diagnosis again and recommended lens replacement using multi focal length (if I have the term right) lenses. The procedure costs more but is well worth it. Four years post surgery - actually a quite simple procedure - I have 20/20 vision both near and far with no night vision problems nor reading problems. I am 71 and pretty damn happy about the whole thing. Thank you Rex Hamilton.Hes also a great guy although when looking for eye surgeons thats probably not the most important thing - consider it a bonus.

Dr. Hamilton is the absolute BEST!! I was scheduled for LASIK eye surgery the day LA shutdown from Covid-19 and had to cancel; to say i was bummed would be an understatement. However once the restrictions for surgeries were lifted Dr. Hamilton got me scheduled right away. Being a little skiddish with all that is going on, I was put at ease once going to his office and seeing all the precautions that were implemented to keep his patients and staff safe. He and his staff are very professional and have been easy to talk to throughout the entire process. Read Dr. Hamiltons resume. It is impeccable. But a physician-surgeon is much more than a list of accomplishments. Dr. Hamilton is a spot-on surgeon and a compassionate, caring physician who instills the utmost of confidence. I had cataract surgery, corrected for mono-vision, two weeks apart. That I am ecstatic is an understatement. With my reading eye, vision is 20/20. Prior, I was unable to read the NY Times, even in brilliant daylight. My distance eye sees 20/25, which is terrific considering its previous condition. I see bright vivd colors and bright whites, not yellowish shades. And finally, where I had considered a follow-up Yag procedure for 20/20 in my distance eye, Dr. Hamilton counseled against it for now. I recommend him most highly for his skill, integrity, and manner.

I had vision correction done by Dr. Hamilton a few years ago when he was still at UCLA. I’d asked around for recommendations and everyone kept saying to go see Dr. Hamilton, so of course I had to go to him. He recommended LASIK in one eye and SMILE in the other. One of my friends who is an optometrist on the East Coast was worried when I told her I was having SMILE done in one eye because at the time it was still relatively new. When I told her Dr. Hamilton was doing it, she changed her mind and said it’d be fine. So clearly the best here. The procedure itself was completely painless and Dr. Hamilton told me exactly what to expect as I was going through the process. There was some discomfort after for the first 6 hours after, with the LASIK side being more intense, but I had perfect vision out of that eye by the next day. The SMILE took a little longer to catch up. I could see pretty well at one week but it wasn’t completely clear until a few weeks later. Ultimately, I see better than 20/20 now!

This is crazy! Less than 24 hours ago I had cataract surgery in my left eye with Dr. David Rex Hamilton. The right eye was operated on 11 days earlier. He used the FEMTO laser and the Symfony lens. I am now reading 5 point type without glasses! I can see close, middle and far already.I am an artist and for the last 10 years I have been suffering from increasingly blurred vision. It had gotten to the point where I was unable to keep focus on my detailed work even with prescription lenses.I was totally freaked out about the idea of anyone touching my eyes but also afraid about my deteriorating eyesight and what it would mean to my work. My friend told me about the wonderful results she had had with Dr. Hamilton and I finally decided it was time to do something.From our fist meeting I had complete confidence in him. I met with Dr. Hamilton at his new office at the Santa Monica Eye Med Group and had my surgery at the UCLA Stein Center.Dr. Hamilton explained everything that would happen and what to expect. The surgery itself was not painful, although I was scared s___less! I am following the schedule for administrating eye drops several times a day…and that’s about it. My eye is red but not really anything anyone would notice. My first eye is completely healed. I am resting today and can’t exercise for about 4 weeks.All in all I would say that if you are in any way considering cataract surgery and a multi focus lens you really should meet with Dr. David Rex Hamilton, I think he is the best!

His impressive résumé and experience, his enthusiasm and his warm personality convinced me to commit to having the Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery with ORA Intraoperative Aberrometry, the refractive management, and the top-of-the-line Tecnis Symfony intraocular lens implants for both eyes.The surgery for the left eye was in June. Dr. Hamilton was wonderful: warm and calming during the surgery (which was painless and relatively quick)—and interesting, explaining the different steps as he was proceeding. The surgery was a success and I could see well some 30 minutes after. Even with only one eye “fixed,” I no longer needed eyeglasses! The left eye now had great micro and near vision, while I still needed improved intermediate to distance vision.The second eye surgery was postponed by a month while Dr. Hamilton transferred from UCLA to join a private practice, Santa Monica Eye Medical Group. I had a post-op/pre-op visit with Dr. Hamilton at the SME Group office. During the visit he fine-tuned/confirmed the best options for the second eye. The surgery was at the end of July, again at UCLA SEI hospital. Now a seasoned patient during surgery, I was just anxious to experience the monovision that Dr. Hamilton expertly had created in my eyes (with intermediate and distance vision now in my right eye and micro and near vision in the left eye). It was amazing! My vision was seamless from near to far and in between!I just spent 10 days in Spain marveling art in museums, admiring architecture and landscapes, and reading maps—no need for eyeglasses, for any distance. When I drive in California, I can see my dashboard, my GPS and the road signs. I see a “spider web” halo at night time around car headlights, but it is less bothersome than the very blurry halo I used to experience before; I actually avoided driving at night before the surgeries. Even my tennis improved significantly. I finally can see the ball when it leaves the opponent’s racquet as well as when it is on my side of the net.Thank you Dr. Hamilton for improving my quality of life!
