Ravlin has been a place of camaraderie, connection and support. My son initially began as the youngest and smallest person in the class. The attention and encouragement that they have given my son by all of the coaches and older kids are palpable. Ravlin teaches structure, discipline, teamwork and defense all of which my son can use for a lifetime. I look forward to my sons continued growth with Ravlin!

I’ve had a long-standing respect and admiration for martial arts, and decided to take my first plunge into that world in June 2021 at the age of 33. I had seen a small sign on Stella Link advertising Ravlin Martial Arts, and decided to reach out through their website for an introductory class. I didn’t feel the need to research or otherwise sniff around for different schools to try, since I didn’t even know if I’d be able to hang or not.The shortest and most honest answer is: nope. Can’t hang. But that’s why I show up. Since beginning my training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I’ve described it to friends as “learning a new language, learning a difficult dancing style, doing high-intensity interval training, and solving equations at the same time.” Who can possibly hang with that?My first class was very intimidating. I went into it completely green, with no prior martial arts experience, no real knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and no familiarity with dojo etiquette. Nobody greeted me by arm-barring me or choking me unconscious, they just welcomed me and encouraged me to do my best and go with the flow. Ravlin Martial Arts is run by black belt Angelus McFarlane, with auxiliary support from a cast of coaches (higher-ranking belts) and occasional guests. The practices usually involve anywhere from 10-15 students of varying ranks and skill level. I’ve become acquainted with most of the regular students, and find them all to be humble, hungry and respectable folks. Every single person I fight with can teach me something new, so the learning environment is very immersive. A family-oriented and community-oriented culture runs through Ravlin, and there’s a noticeable lack of egotism. Professor Angelus encourages all students of adequate rank to compete in local competitions, and all of the Ravlin gear – from rash guards to t-shirts – is made right here in the great state of Texas. In my home state of Oklahoma, there is a local burger joint in an unassuming location, owned and operated by one guy. He makes a quality product, and he knows his customers. Over time, he’s built up an incredible range of loyal customers who appreciate him and his small restaurant – and he’s still in business to this day. That’s the feeling I get with Professor Angelus and Ravlin Martial Arts. There is only one Ravlin in existence, and it’s a small school with a quality product and loyal, dedicated, grateful students.I’ve recently passed the three-month mark, and I have no intention of quitting. I would recommend it to anyone looking to try out martial arts, anyone looking to further develop existing skill, anyone looking for a new way to develop their physical fitness, or anyone with a broken soul who is looking to learn deeper life lessons about grappling with and overcoming life’s brutalities.Last, and certainly, most – I would recommend this for children. They’ll thank you when they grow up.

I can not recommend Ravlin martial arts enough. When we were looking for a club for my son I called many places in Houston but Professor Angelus was by far the most transparent and informative I spoke to about the pricing and what the club had to offer. He went through the monthly fee, the contract lengths they offered and also explained for the one monthly fee my son would be able to attend all 3x BJJ classes a week as well as all the kids Muay Thai classes a week provided he had the clothing/equipment for both. The club provide you with the clothing/equipment for 1 of the 2 programs when you enroll but the option to buy what you need for the 2nd is offered by them. Professor and Coach Stacy are both firm but encouraging and care about each of their students as if they were their own kids. My 6yr old has learnt so much in the 3months he has been attending here and is super excited to be part of “ Team Ravlin”

The Head Trainer and Owner here is Angelus, I used to train with him back in the day and I have come here to his new place and I am amazed its gotten better than before. He is an excellent coach, active Martial Arts Competitor, and teacher. I love getting trained by someone who is actually actively fighting in their prime, not by someone who has had their glory days a few decades ago. He has the patience to train anybody from their first day to even the more seasoned and skilled fighters. The facility is clean, competitive prices with discounts on longer contracts, and offers no contract options along with drop in classes. It lets you know this isnt a money emphasized gym, the instructor cares about your goals. If you just want to get in shape, this is the class. If you want to become a world class black belt, this is the class. Today on a slow Monday class you get the same kind of detailed attention as you would on those packed Friday nights. I highly recommend this place to anybody who is a Martial Arts Enthusiast/Fitness Enthusiast or just curious about learning to defend yourself.

I was never athletic before I started training. I had zero confidence in myself before I started training. I was lost before I started training. But today, I realize how much Ive grown, how much Ive learned, and just how thankful I am for Head Coach/Owner Angelus McFarlane, Coach Stacy, and everyone else on this team, which is essentially one big family. When I met this team I wasnt very happy with my life. I had been bullied for most of my life which left me feeling so small and so worthless but that honestly all changed when I joined. And not only did they help me improve on the mats but outside the gym too.It is the gym that has played a major role in getting me to where I am today and for giving me the confidence to challenge myself and more so, to believe in myself and to realize that I am stronger than I give myself credit for and for that ,along with many other reasons, Ravlin will forever be my second home. So, with all that being said, I encourage whoever reads this to join our team so that you too may experience how incredible this place is and remember to challenge yourself. If I can do it so can you and I truly believe that as I was just a little country kid who has now competed in multiple Jiu Jitsu tournaments and I look back at my progression with a smile because for a long time, I didnt think it would be possible.**Precautions are being taken due to Covid 19 as safety is top priority. I feel safe going to the gym plus, with the gym membership, there is a regular gym that all Ravlin members have access to which is just an awesome bonus!

Post Covid19. The classes have been spaced so there is no overlap with other classes thus minimizing people contact. Matts are being sterilized in between classes. Your temperature is taking upon entering the school.Professor Angelus has over 25 years of martial arts training. He is an extremely gifted instructor that wants to share his knowledge and love of the arts. Coach pushes each student past their own personal comfort zones. Team Ravlin is a diverse team with students of different ages and different walks of life. The higher belts encourage and help the lower belts. I have made so many new friends in my BJJ journey. The teammates go out to eat, go to the movies, hang out outside of the gym...etc. It is a great friendly team environment and I love the camaraderie. I sometimes have to bring my two young daughters to the gym if my wife is not home. My girls do not want to do any sports. When we are live rolling it cracks me up that Coach Angelus is on the sidelines teaching my girls AND my girls are following his instruction. Coach Angelus simply cant NOT teach. Its just who he is. He teaches because he is SO passionate about martial arts and fitness. Ravlin also has kid classes. If you are looking for BJJ or Muai Thai and live in the Bellaire, West University, Medical Center or South Houston then Ravlin Martial Arts and Fitness is what you are looking for. There are no egos and you will be welcomed with open arms no matter your age, size, athletic ability or experience. I have NEVER done anything like BJJ but I just keep showing up. It gets addicting fast. Once you get past the nerves of doing something that is foreign and scary you crave coming to workout with your friends. After every class I am drenched in sweat because I just had an amazing workout. Come train in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

I have been training at Ravlin for about 1.5 years now, and it has done wonders for my physical and mental health! Professor Angelius and Coach Ki are amazing and extremely talented professionals in their field. As an older, slower and less flexible member of the gym, I couldnt ask for nicer or more patient coaches. They were sorely missed during the mandatory COVID close down. They have since reopened, and as a physician whos up to date with CDC COVID recommendations and precautions, I couldnt feel safer or more comfortable! I greatly appreciate the safety protocol and social distancing guidelines they have instituted.

I have been training under coach Angelus since last 2 months and have known him since last 3 yrs. He is one of the very few all round MMA experts who are very humble, courteous, friendly and can adapt their communication methods effectively for kids, young adults and adults. Coach Angelus and his training partners are very thorough and detailed in explaining the art as your friends, as someone who have had the same learning curve as you, making you very comfortable to move beyond clumsy failures on to mastery.Edit 3/2019: I have since observed that coach Angelus and his training partners believe and behave with the notion that each of their students are capable of doing far far better. Their advice, direction and coaching is unrestricted and unlimited. You maybe a white, blue belt but they will guide you to think and act like a black belt. Always humble and preaching humility. Ive been with Ravlin for a few months now and by any standard a beginner at Jiu-Jitsu. The school is very welcoming and full of good people. Our instructor has decades of martial arts experience and quite passionate about his profession; That attitude makes for a very positive, productive and healthy training environment. Personally I just want to get in shape and learn a useful skill while doing it. Unlike other activities like running or cycling your mind is constantly engaged in this sport. You constantly have to solve problems while working out which, for me, is much more fun than the alternatives. :-)

I started my 6 and 4 year old at Ravlin about 4 months ago. After an extensive search around town of all the available places to learn jujitsu, we landed at Ravlin. There are several reasons why we feel that Ravlin is the best.First, it is really important to me that if were taking the time and effort to get to a class, that the class is properly staffed. Youre never going to have 30 kids and one teacher and a bunch of kids just laying around on the mats. There is always a low student to teacher ratio. The kids get a LOT of hands on attention, and this equates to them getting the most out of each class.Second most important to me was schedule. The class schedule worked great for us and is always expanding. They are always adding classes as they grow. This ensures we can make it twice a week, even with all our other activities going on.Next is location. The place is easy to get to and close by. The space is always clean and bright. It is an excellent environment.Last but not least the coaches are excellent! They are experienced, patient, and wonderful with the kids.We are here to stay. We absolutley love Ravlin! I would highly recommend it to anyone that is serious about their kids getting the most out of their jujitsu classes.

I started training under Coach Angelus almost 9 months at a gym near my house. He has since opened up his own school --- Ravlin Martial Arts and Fitness. Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 40 has been and incredible journey. I first started BJJ because I was 40, over weight and my workouts were stagnant. BJJ workouts are like nothing you have ever experienced. The physical and mental energy is unparalleled. I have lost 20 lbs so far. I eat better and workout more consistently outside of BJJ in order to be better conditioned for BJJ. I had never done anything like BJJ before and my past athletic experience had been soccer, basketball and weight lifting. Coach Angelus is amazing and made me fell comfortable from day one. As a white belt I dont even know what I dont know. But I keep coming to class. With working all day, family, kids, and life there are a lot of times I dont want to go train. It is easy to make excuses. However, when I start to have excuses I think about Coach and I dont want to let him down. Coach Angelus puts his heart and soul into his students development as martial artists. He wants me to get better and pushes me. If Coach can put 100% effort into me I have no excuse to not match his commitment. Next, the culture and environment of Ravlin is incredible. Ravlin school is blessed to have so many awesome men, women, teens and kids. Regardless of skill level, all my teammates are positive, helpful, nice, and amazing friends. I can honestly say I have an extended family. The bond I have formed with my Ravlin teammates is far superior then the bond I had with my high school basketball teammates. BJJ is a combat and self-defense art. A journey starts with a single step. If you are looking for amazing workouts, discipline, better health, unbelievable comradery then Ravlin is for you. Coach Angelus also teaches Muay Thai and has a kids programs.
