My uncle had a heart attack and was life flighted to the hospital with the best availability. It happened to be MU. Placed stents in just fine, but after he was having pain in his gallbladder. Took them hours to find this issue that was causing him severe pain and made him violently ill. Eventually received news after many hours of waiting that he had gallbladder stones and his gallbladder was swollen. Rather than removing the stones he had they put in a drain and gave him multiple blood thinners that prevented him from being able to receive further surgery. They discharged him roughly four days later with a gallbladder drain, and didn’t properly supply him with some of the medication, oxygen masks, etc. Two days after discharge, with little to no response on tests he had received there, he checked in to a hospital in Kansas City when he rated his pain at a 7. KC is trying to figure out why he was put on so many thinners and why his gallbladder wasn’t removed in the first place due to the amount of infection it has. Now they can’t get records from Columbia to figure out all of what took place there. All they know is he is now in horrible condition, his gallbladder has since collapsed and infection spread to his pancreas. Lack of fluids have also damaged his kidneys. They will most likely have to remove his gallbladder and pancreas entirely due to the infection but because the amount of blood thinners Columbia put him on they are unable to safely operate. Wouldn’t recommend this hospital to ANYONE.

Do not go to any of their facilities. They dont send billing in a timely manner and are very eager to turn your account over to collections. If you are late with a payment one time, all billing after automatically goes to collections. When you try to call to figure out what is going on, you can never reach a live person. If you leave a voicemail, they dont call until over a week later, compounding the problem.

Only to cancel it out of the blue (our hopes were so high) and discharge her. I wouldnt take my worst enemy to this place. Its a waist of time and air. I’ve been trying to figure out my bill from the university hospital for over a month and have gotten absolutely nowhere. The first woman who I spoke with was trying to be helpful and told me it would be 7-10 business days before I had any answers. That was over three weeks ago. And the other people I’ve talked to have been much less help. If you want clear communication and people who WANT to help go to any other hospital.

I don’t want to get into a lot of my medical history, so here are the highlights:1. Total ER time was SEVEN HOURS2. Went in with shortness of breath, ended up getting an ultrasound on my LEGS3. Nurse literally left a vial of my blood laying on the counter and never came to retrieve it4. No communication on what tests were being run and for what purpose (only found out when results came that they thought I might have cancer!)5.When asked about the chest X-ray that sent me there, doctor responded “I wasn’t impressed.”6. Was told all tests were “negative,” but discovered quite a few issues when reading the test results myself (i.e. a hernia)7. Was discharged with no answers and no change to my state of discomfortThere’s more… but you get the gist.

Recently moved here and had something going on with my stomach. After being transferred from ER to ER OBS to 6East i am only giving this place 3 stars because the nurses are wonderful. They went above and beyond and wished they could help me more than they were allowed to. The doctors seem to have a problem communicating between themselves, the nurses, patients as well as their families. It is a problem they really need to address and work on. Excellent place otherwise and the nurses have my eternal gratitude for getting me through my ordeal.

I wrote detailed review on my experience at UM Heath care. It disappeared just before I sent it. Experience in ER included concerns about patient confidentiality and a breeze through by a cardiovascular surgeon who needed help with mastery if tbe English language. I have no problem she was not a born American, its that she could not completely understand me, having to ask her PA for translation. I never got to ask questions. It was a see me in 3 months and gone visit. Subsequently I was transfered to 6W and then 4W. During the first transfer my IV, bp cuff and stickey heart monitor patches were removed and then in 6W they put them back again, including another long needlebin my are for the IV. Between trying to take me for a test/procedure, and I was the WRONG PATIENT, trying to perform a stress test which the excellent man involved heard me say aneurysm, checked with the physician in the Radiology area who say absolutely not and the multiple different teams I saw telling me different things I was scared to death. No wonder my bp was about 210/107 on one morning. Never did see a cardiologist or neurologist, the services I was sent to the ER for. I begged to be released form the hospital, as I began believing the more and different docs I saw were driving my bp up. I thought my aneurysm was going to rupture and I would die. The multiple nurses I saw on 4W were awesome and caring. I cant say as much about the docs on that service that day. I went for a walk down the hall and sat outside at the Ellis garden. When I got back to my room, my nurse (Trey is fantastic) took my bp, it was 134/85 or close to that. The Fam Med docs discharged me and I got to see my husband who drove me home. I guess I didnt miss much with a cheese stick and smashed crackers after 10 hours in the ER, and no food the next day except stale crackers and peanut butter I could not eat without a utensil. I was told by the staff that this was the MU Hospital diet. I really couldnt believe all this was happening. It was like a nightmare. After serving as a Professor at MU since 1990, working in research and the Ob/Gyn Fertility Clinic, I never saw any of this before. I could not believe I was in the same hospital that I had worked in for years. I truly feel bad for other non-employees who get this service. I know many physicians and nurses at MU. They provide excellent caring service, so this review is only about my experience on Aug 20 - 23. So say, but I believe Ill be going to Boone or St. Louis for hospital needs in the future. I believe in MU, but this was over the edge.

My oldest son started developing a tumor in his upper left arm. He was complaining about the pain when we discovered it. Rather large for size of the bone. So we got referred to the university. There we spoke with the financial lady. All seemed ok untill we said that NO we didnt have insurance. Then might as well say they demanded account balances from me and my wife. At that time we had barely enough to cover the MRI so we agreed to get it done, so at least we know what we were dealing with. The MRI got done and we got a CD copy of the MRI. After we paid for the MRI we basically got told that alot of kids have them and not to worry and a rather rude good by. No talk of possible options what so ever.A little about us. My wife and I are both honnorably discharged military. She served 8 years not deployed I served 10 years 5.9 years total of it was deployed to the middle East where I was injured and finally discharged from landstuhl medical Germany.Needless to say my sons ordeal was nothing but a slap in the face to both of us. The hospital is not busy and everyone walks in pairs. When we finally had our appointment for the MRI we had to beg to have the doctor look at it the same day and see us. The appointment was for 11:00am, the doctors rolled in at 12:00pm. The room was hot and no reason for their tardiness. When asked about next steps we were told we would hear from them. We have decided to go to another healthcare provider.MU Hospital is not a place to go if you want service and communication.

Had I known that they run their hospital on banker hours I would’ve never sent my mother there. We found out on Friday night that nothing would be done until Monday. There’s no one in the offices, and no procedures are performed on the weekends. The nurses were ordered to give my mother all kinds of blood thinners and something for her blood pressure around 3 o’clock in the morning on Sunday. My mother had a severe stroke that same morning 2 hours later and another one on Monday and she died the following Tuesday. The nurses were wonderful and I know their hearts are often broken because of the slow responses and procedures the doctors have in that hospital. My mom was 100% healthy, wearing platform shoes, driving and had just returned home from a cruise. It’s so very hard to believe that this was really her time to go. Communication at this hospital is non existing. No communication with family or between staff members. They change out Doctors and staff to often. Every change of staff brings a different way. You are told one thing and then the next day it is something different. The care of my husband who was dealing with some confusion was only complicated by the constance change of each doctors own idea of what they want to do. For being a TEAM of doctors this was a disply of a very broken team. 1 Family member could only be there 3 hrs a day. For someone suffering from the hospital delirium, not being able to have that familiar face only makes it worst for them. He went in with one thing wrong and ended up with an infection that he caught at the hospital and only complicated things. I was told yesterday by 1 doctor that he was going to be sent home either today or tomorrow. New doctor today now says no because he was confused last night when they decided to move him to a new room. When a person is suffering from delirium and needs to be in familiar surroundings the answer to this doctor was to move him to a new room with nothing familar. Dont bring any love one to this place.

I lost my husband to cancer Aug 2015. It was a very difficult period for our family. I felt the University was the best place for him and it was - I am glad that is where he spent his final days because we felt at home and comfortable, during this most difficult time.It helped to have all of his doctors talk to him and to each other, all at the same time. Better care than he had received at a different hospital where it was anyones guess when a doctor would pop in - I know they are busy. We just liked the way the University functions by sending everyone in at once, same time every day. We were also pleased with the nursing staff - they have huge loving hearts! We also enjoyed the spacious rooms and the privacy it brought. If I could change one thing - I had a hard time getting my husband a priest for his last rights. We finally did but it took longer than anyone would hope. We were asked what his religious beliefs were but it didnt seem to matter because no one brought communion.Again, this is a small complaint but for me, it was important. The nurses took care of it and the entire staff made my husbands last days as comfortable for him and our family as possible. BTW - Hospice was remarkable as well! 5 stars for them too!

Very, very disappointed. My elderly mother was not treated well. Had an appointment for 3 different procedures to be done in one area. The only thing that was even talked about at first was her biopsy. Then we infomed the nursing staff that she was scheduled for another procedure to be done and they got that all figured out and situated. One nurse was very rude though. The procedure went well, but got a call the next day that they FORGOT to do the biopsy. So back up a few days later for the biopsy and have the nastiest mannered nurse i have ever had to deal with. I undserstand that there are long hours and lots of hard work, but if you dont like people in general, maybe decide on another profession? Maybe in a cubicle of some sort away from people or maybe its just senior citizens. Your patients have feelings, every one of them should be treated how the staff would want their own loved ones treated. Very disappointed, again, about the negligence and the treatment. So sad for my mother that she has had to endure this grueling process and will ask to be referred elsewhere from now on.

When I had gotten 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns they had helped me out. Even when they ended up having to do a skin graft to fix my leg. The operation went well. I can walk because this hospital saved my leg.

A top rated hospital and one I trust. If you are here for a procedure , bloodwork X-rays or whatever, the check-in process is very easy and moves quickly. There are clinics in the hospital as well and are easy to find.

The great staff saved my life! Good food too! They just need a safer place for patients to go to smoke other than the street, I understand they are a smoke free campus, but the rules need to be bent somewhat.

This is what my Mom had and The Dr failed to help her wouldnt do surgery all they cared about was their stinking jobs I would not recommend the 5th floor to anyone!!!!!:If gallstone pancreatitis goes untreated, the complications can be very serious. Digestive fluids from the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, may back up into your body. This can cause an infection called cholangitis. You may also develop yellowish eyes and skin (jaundice) My Mom would still be alive if they had done their Job !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a major heart attack with a cardiac arrest in the ambulance and again in the emergency room. The survival rate of such and event is less than 15%, but I am back at work three years later, and despite extensive damage able to do most of the things I love. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was first rate too. Caring, and advanced delivery of care, I couldnt have asked for more.

Our experience has been below average. Doctors seem to not really care about privacy and let interns into the room without courtesy of asking the patient first. Hospital management need to educate their staff about patient privacy. Business as usual.

Do not come here for critical care. They did not properly do things, which resulted in her having pain. She later died in her hospital bed. It is a result of college students from the university that they give employment to. They are not educated enough or just lack concern for detail in taking procedures seriously. My mom was put on oxygen, but they did not turn on the humidifier with the oxygen. Her nose bled and she had a massive migraine. All the cold dry air gave her intense pain. They not only did it once, but 4 times. She had cancer and they did not do anything but cause her more pain. And do surgeries that did not even help but made the cancer spread.Go to a real cancer center or a hospital for better care. They just want your money.

The nursing staff was amazing my whole stay. The doctors came in every morning to check on me. They and the nurses always explained to me why something was happening, or what a medication was before they gave it to me. They stayed in top of my pain, and did everything possible to keep me comfortable. Always smiling faces, too. All seem to love their job.

Not a good ER if you have mental health issues. Ive gone in multiple times with chest pain, numbness and tingling of the limbs, heart rate 130+ and BPs that are way too high for everyday living. All of this is overlooked immediately since I have a history of depression and anxiety. Both times Ive been here Ive been informed that Im having a panic attack when I know Im not. My panic attacks are not something I seek ER care for. Nope apparently my chest pain and everything is just disregarded because I have a mental health issue. I was literally left in a room with no way to get ahold of my nurse and they let me just sit in the room to calm down Im leaving with the exact same problems I walked in with but its ok because its anxiety and its going to magically go away. It really irks me to be treated this way and I feel sorry for anyone else who has gone through this discrimination as well because it should be unacceptable. People can get hurt when you just disregard them and I hope they realize their mistakes.

I have had many experiences at this hospital and not one was bad. They were very attentive of my needs and showed great resilience dealing with my suffering, spinal injury and nerve pain. I have also taken numerous individuals in for addiction withdraw and psychosis. This is a well-equipped facility and I believe they do everything they can to help an individual.

This is statement to housekeeper who was fired for reporting HIPPA violation. IF that happened to you I want to apologize personally. I have no reason to doubt you. Im a former housekeeper and now an old physician at UMC Hosp. I hope you get this and understand it comes from my heart, I have never and will never take another working person for granted or show disrespect due to perceived differences of importance. Although I love MU Im happy that you brought this out to discuss. Wish you the best.

I was discharged on Friday. The doctors said they will call to check on me, then schedule follow up visit. Five days and two phone calls to them.... still no news. I guess they do not care that I have a port coming out of my body. Hopefully, I am taking care of it correctly by myself. For how long?????

First I would like to state the treatment I received while in the hospital was a five star experience. My complaint is with customer service after I was released from the hospital. I was in the hospital from January 03 2016 through February 12, 2016 and still gravely ill upon release to the point I could not care for myself or return to my home or attend to my affairs. Once my health improve to the point that I could handle some phone calls to handle my own business affairs I realized that some of the bills were turned over to Accounts Management Service which is a collection service. I contacted them and made payment arrangements which I kept. However just recently I checked my credit report a learned that I have 14 collections against my report all from their collection agency. I then contacted the collection agency and they stated they are instructed by the hospital to report invoice numbers as separate accounts although both the hospital and the collection agency stated I do have one account number. I then contacted the hospital customer service this department handles billing. I was told by the supervisor that they send one file over to collections and have no control over how they choose to report to the credit bureau. All I am asking is for the accounts to be under one account since they all stem from the same hospital visit. Although I was in the hospital January 2016 my account shows delinquent as January 2016 and turned over to collections May 2016. Both companies are claiming they do not have control over how the account is being reported to the credit bureaus. I filed a complaint against the collection agency and this was their response MESSAGE FROM BUSINESS:Consumer has been in contact with our office. Consumer has spoken with Trent, Manager. The client maintains the accounts are separate. The client is reviewing and will advise as to the final ruling. which is untrue because I filed the complaint after I was told there was nothing they could do to help me. Now I will file a complaint against the hospital and wait to see if they will blame the collection agency for the reporting to the credit bureau. The bottom line is this hospital cares nothing about you once you are no longer a patient. It so disheartening to realize that the same hospital that worked so hard to save your life has no compaction once you are no longer in their care. My illness altered my life forever and now the hospital wants to destroy my financial life. Please take this as a cautionary tale if you ever have to be a patient at this hospital.

A week ago my mother was in ICU.She then was lowered to the 5th floor West. Thats where all communication stopped. My mother has a high risk and they put a band around her wrist to let them know. After she rang her buzzer to get help to the restroom after 1 hour she proceeded to do it on her own. The alarms were going off. One of the nurses disconnected the alarms. I guess they wont be bothered the next time she needs to go to the restroom. She is a fall riskWhen she was bumped from ICU to 5th floor I called to speak to her nurse. They asked for my name and my phone number and she would return my phone call which she never did. 2 Days Later I called to speak to my moms nurse gave him my number and they never returned my phone call a second time so the third time I called to speak to the Head Nurse. Again she was busy and I left my number and the head nurse did not return my phone call 2 hours later Im picking my mother up. I think my mother had enough2 Days Later my mother is back in ICUThere was no plan in place and no communication from her nurses or doctors to inform me how I can help the situation. Also they would not give her her high blood pressure medicine which made her high blood pressure jump. That could cause a heart attack or even a strokeAnother incident happened 3 years ago when we received tickets on our vehicles. Apparently we had the last name of someone who works there and we had to bring the ticket and prove that we had somebody in the hospital. My mother was in ICU do you really think that was something I wanted to deal with. Why should a patient sit in the hospital bed 7 days with no shower or bed bath.No communication with family from the doctors or nurses. No return phone calls :/do they even care ?

Approx. 3 yrs ago I was driven by friends to the University ER for the worst optic migraine Ive ever had. My brain couldnt even make sense of basic shapes or read I was in such excruciating pain. All of the staff were fantastic and got me in as fast as they could. My nurse was compassionate, he was so comforting and made sure that I had everything that I needed. No one had a problem with my best friends being there to comfort me until I was ready to go home.Just one problem. Ive had optic migraines for several years now, and I know my symptoms and what I can do to prevent them, and what I need when I cant stop them from getting worse. When they were wheeling me back, they absolutely insisted upon a CAT scan, convinced that I was having a stroke or something. I explained to them that I knew what it was, and I didnt need, didnt want a CAT scan, and they gave me one anyways. This was right when my familys flex money had run out for the year. I was stuck paying a 2,000 some bill while going to school and working full time. With very little money to spare, I had no choice but to sacrifice and pay it off as quickly as possible so it didnt go to collections and ruin my good credit. Love the staff at University Hospital, but they need to be educated/learn to listen to patients and take their requests, opinions and concerns seriously. No one should ever have to pay for a procedure when they specifically said it was unnecessary and they didnt want it.If I hadnt of been so delirious and helpless I would have put my foot down.

I had the good fortune to be in the emergency room at University Hospital yesterday. Fortunately, my situation turned out to be inconsequential but, when I arrived there, I did not think that at all. The whole staff; from the woman at check-in to the nurses, EMTs, doctors, technicians were just excellent. The ER was packed to the gills and yet these folks were efficient and maintained a friendly attitude. I do question the wisdom of moving Urgent Care to South Providence however. Ill-considered at best. I am afraid that decision is going to result in more work for the good staff in the ER. Many thanks to them all!

Horrible customer service 🚮. From the PCT. LPN. RN. Down to the doctors (Some) are just RUDE. It’s never fun spending time at a hospital unless a baby is being born... worst experience I ever had with this hospital. After today I will definitely rethink and remember the way me and my family where treated today but this so called staff and place of great hospitality. I will definitely be going to BJC after this for anything health concerns.. watch over your family members never leave them alone. Ask questions. There should definitely be a class that all of their employees should attend on how to be RESPECTFUL and more ways to make the patient feel comfortable while staying in the facility. I used to really like this hospital a lot untill today.!✌🏽
