Worst experience I have ever had dealing with a doctors office. My mother had neck surgery 2 months ago performed by Dr. Goss. Since then she has been battling an infection off and on. At one point there were white gobs of what looked like wet dough coming out of her incision. Never seen anything like it. We have been told repeatedly that Neck surgeries DONT infect. In 15 years, only one patient has had an infectionWe spent 7 hrs in the ER at Riverside yesterday due to severe pain in her neck and shoulders. The ER doc wanted to tranfer her by ambulance to Chesapeake General. He said she has an infection in her neck after a MRI and blood work were performed. Another doc at SMOC and Dr Goss made the decision to NOT do this. She was sent home with no meds under the idea she was to call and come to the office in the morning and antibiotics would mess up a culture. After repeated calls and only getting the answering service, which do nothing, I got finally got them to agree to let me bring her in. She saw Dr Goss PA, Winkler. He was very arrogant and rude. He repeated that in 15 years only one person has had an infection from neck surgery. They took x-rays, which, to my knowledge, cant detect infections. Never referred to the MRI taken the night before. He merely glanced at the incision site which is/has been healed and told her that it was in her head that it hurt. Her brain had convinced her muscles they hurt. Said he didnt want a culture cause that would involve opening it back up and neck surgeries dont infect. Her white blood cells nearly doubling in 8 days (sign of infection) was because of the surgery 2 months prior according to him. He also stated that due to her age (61) and medical history this is expected Dont worry, by Friday you should be back to the land of the living He put her on 3 meds for the infection he still insisted she DOESNT have. He was irrated and bothered when I was asking questions.Best part, he was asked to send the scripts to Hampton to be filled. He sent only 1 and the other 2 went to a Chesapeake location. The only reason it was known the other 2 were sent at all was because the Walgreens app notified us the were filled. After 2 hours, of trying to get ahold of someone to fix this, I had to drive back to Chesapeake from Hampton to pick them upWE WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS PRACTICE AGAIN!

Had an appointment at SMOC and saw Dr. Bernstein. She saw the MRI and told me I was a prime candidate for a knee replacement, but they did not want to do anything until I was in my 60s. WHAT??? So I would need to wait 10-15 years before I can get my knee fixed. She set me up with PT and wanted to see me 6 weeks later. On week 5, the PT place called and wanted to schedule PT. I said I had an appointment with my doctor the next week and I would let them know. I went back and saw Dr. Bernstein and told her I could no wait 10-15 years. She said that she never said that, but I still needed to get my knee fixed. I squated and my knee popped, she said that was a muscle. My doctor said it was bone on bone and a physical therapist said that it was bone on bone. So she scheduled me with Dr. Wright, so I had to wait another 6 weeks for the appointment. She actually told the office staff that I needed a surgical consult. I went to the appointment, paid my co-pay and sat down. 15 minutes went by and a nurse came out to tell me Dr. Wright had a family emergency and I needed to be rescheduled. Not a problem, I totally understand. They wrote my information on a piece of paper. Should have been a red flag. Why not put it into the computer. But another staff member said, just do like we did yesterday, so it was written on a piece of paper. So they knew the day before and did not call to explain the situation. Butnthey did not and i wasted an hour of my time. I was told I would get a call by Tuesday the next week. Tuesday came and went without a call. Two weeks went by and I called. I was told that he was not back yet. A total of a month goes by and I call. I was told I would have to wait ANOTHER 6 weeks before I could get an appointment.I am going to go down and get my records and the co-pay and never step foot in that HORSE and PONY SHOW. I shouldnt have to wait a total of two and a half months. Other patients should have been moved to accommodate the ones that needed to be rescheduled.I would not refer anyone to that place.

Absolutely, hands down, the worst patient services in all of the Tidewater. Ive been on the phone now for over an hour just trying to pay a bill. No one answers any of the phone lines at 3pm, the billing extension is out of service, and finally, after a 16 minute hold I was transferred to an answering service that put me back on hold for another 10 minutes just so I could leave a message. DONT BOTHER WITH SMOC!!! THEY HAVE NO BUSINESS PLAN WHEN IT COMES TO CISTOMER SERVICE. HORRIBLE PHONE SYSTEM AND ANSWERING SERVICE. I GUESS THEY JUST DONT WANT TO GET PAID.SCREW EM.

This place is amazing! It’s very clean and gives a very relaxed feeling which is great if you’re in pain and stressed out. Dr. Guinand has been incredible! I honestly wish all doctors I went to were just like him.I only had a problem with the PT area which was just a mess with scheduling and sometimes the therapists only payed a little attention to me because they were sometimes double booked and the huge open area with other people around made me so tender the exercises hardly worked. Still, the staff was so amazing and even though I have a herniated disk, I was blessed to find SMOC.

The physicians are wonderful. Dealing with the office staff is a nightmare. I showed up for an appointment, the doctor wasnt there, they couldnt reschedule me with another physician while I was there, and then they claimed theyd called me several times to try to reschedule. I just checked my phone records for the date they claimed they tried to call (thank you Google Fi for having call records that update in real time). Not a single phone call from this office to try to reschedule me. I lost three hours of work time and paid the downtown tunnel toll at peak rates both ways.

My husband saw Dr. Goss and the experience was terrible. He has zero bedside manners. If you are over weight dont bother going. If you are in pain management dont bother going. You will certainly be judged and your condition wont be taken seriously. Im saddened that we couldnt find an alternative to pain medication. The whole goal of addressing this was to find a solution for my husband to get off his pain medication and improve his quality of life. The administrative staff were kind and courteous to us. The facility itself is impressive and very welcoming. The doctor we saw however was judgmental and arrogant and is the reason why we will never go back.

I am thankful and grateful for having a great surgery Dr. Romash and he did well for my foot surgery. The customer service and the physical therapist Dagny is not impressive. I have three kids and my oldest usually is in school and today I had all three since no school today because of teacher work day. My appointment was at 9:30 I got in therapy room at 9:44. Dagny already had an attitude with me about how my therapy will be short today because I was late. I told her I was late before, I can skip ice at end she said how this wasnt my first time being late and she would have ten minutes with me and how her next appointment coming in at 10. My oldest is 4 with autism he was near me pretty much the whole time. My other two usually stays in double stroller (3 year old and 19 month old). Usually they stay in stroller and I park stroller where my table is. This lady was helping occupying my children in the stroller. 0958 Dagny said about stairs and some other quick exercise which I still had til 1030 at least. I was late before and still was able to get my full hour therapy in with NO attitude and today as soon as I got in room she had a poor attitude with me. I feel discriminated because of my son being here today. My therapy started at 9:44 and ended at 10:08. I would NOT recommend Dagny especially if you have children and not in a position to have sitters etc. I wish I went to another place for physical therapy. I do NOT want to come back for physical therapy anymore. I got an evaluation and that is it. Stairs I can do at home. She doesnt have kids and so she can get up and have her freedom and give poor customer service to people who have kids and late. I have to pack kids up, get them ready, feed them, pack snacks and last minute diaper changes. I also have a commute. So after today I no longer want Dagny as my therapist. The good positive thing about today is seeing Dagnys true colors with poor customer service.

He put the X-rays up on the large screen in the treatment room and as he explained his findings. It was awesome to be able to actually see while listening to Dr Winkler. I was told that I was having muscle spasms, arthritis, gas, and even drug seeking because it was all in my mind. I met with Dr. Goss, he looked at the films and scheduled surgery. It happened so fast I was a little apprehensive. Two days after surgery I am in no need for pain medication, was able to take off my neck brace. I have feeling in that once numb arm and no crippling back pain. Besides a sore throat and incision area soreness, I have a new lease on life. Even my skin feels and look better. I truly cannot explain how Ive been lifted from despair to looking forward to living life with my family no longer feeling like a burden. Just this feeling right now is so promising. So referred due to a car accident of a few months ago continuing to cause issues. Referred by patient first stating this is a good clinic. Called to schedule an appointment and greeted with a flat, discourteous voice asking what I am referred for. Stated this was due to a car accident, the voice stated oh, we dont see car accident victims. Naturally perturbed I asked, well why is that?. The voice responds, the doctors dont like to deal with lawyers. I couldnt believe my ears, so without knowing anything about me, you are denying treatment for any injury due to not wanting to deal with lawyers? The voice responds yes. So much for that hippocratical oath. Those of us in car accidents dont deserve treatment for an injury regardless of lawyer involved or not. Dont generally leave reviews but this was disgusting to me.

They cant even work with my insurance company to resolve a claim without blaming the patient and trying to ruin the patients credit when it is not even the patients fault. SMOC sent me one bill and I contacted SMOC. They said they were handling the matter with my insurance company and my balance owed was zero. The next thing I know, SMOC turned the matter over to a collection agency without giving me a second or final notice. The truth is I made my copay on the initial visit and my insurance covered the remaining balance once the proper claim was processed. Im a single mother with two kids with a great job that provided long term disability insurance. He was relieved when he found that I had ltd saying so youll be okay. It caught me off guard cause the entirety of my situation hadnt hit me yet. It also didnt console me at the time because I was more upset about what my future would be like being mostly bed ridden and in pain. I was upset that my plans (vacations, activities, career) was at jeopardy and it really didnt hit me that Ill still have to manage to pay my mortgage and bills (priorities, I know). He performed three injections in my back and the last one was dead on. Which i learned is the case when the leg goes numb. I dropped like a sack of potatoes when I tried tried to get up.The technicians and the front staff was really kind and was friendly towards me and my children. However, I did not appreciate the physicians assistant (young guy) who wheeled me out and said some really rude stuff to me in front of my mom and kids. I hope they would speak to him and educate him to be more empathetic towards patients who are dealing with significant medical problems.

DO NOT schedule an appointment with this office! Dr. Browns nurse Cindy was going to submit a prescription order to Tri-Care, in the 3 weeks since my apt I have not heard back from her and they do not answer their phones. I literarily had to call Physical therapy (they do answer their phones) to have them hand carry a message to Cindy for me, and she still couldnt call me back. This is the most unprofessional group of health care providers Ive ever had to deal with. I made a complaint to Tricare and they have informed me that I am not the first patient to complain about them. Seriously, dont waste your time of co-pay...

First time I went to this practice I was sent there by my PCP who is a great doctor. He has the best bedside manners ever. I had refer many patients to him and none have been disappointed. Well, he sent me there so I went for my neck pain. I saw Dr Guinand which I knew from seeing him once when he worked at Patient First. It was strange to see him there now treating me for my neck. Anyway i was there early the appt was not until 12 (lunch time) and it took like 1 and 20 min t be seen. He was asking how would I describe my pain and I could not explain the pain. Instead of giving me some guidance asking questions to figure it out his words to me were “ your insurance requires me to check a box with the kind of pain you are having. I don’t care which one just tell me one so I can check the box”. That was a Red Flag for me. Then since I already had therapy that was not working he sent me to a friend of nos that is a chiropractor “the best there is”. That was the end of that treatment. Now I received a flu shot that left me with a lot of pain for over a month therefore I was referred by my PCP to Atlantic Orthopedic. I got there the Dr said the flu shot triggered bursitis gave a me a steroid SHOT , sent me home and told me to call if not better by Friday . I was not better at all (even though many people get better the same day). I called Friday and the secretary there was not very pleasant nor professional told me it will take 2 weeks for the shot to work, needless to say I called SMOC to schedule appt with Dr Samuel Brown because he had good reviews and he will accept my insurance. He was not my first option but the doctor I want to see does not accept my insurance. Ok, so appointment #1 went kind of well even though his nurse seen upset when she saw I was wearing a sling which I was wearing because it was helping me with the pain. She asked me immediately who put you on that sling? I said ; I did. The. She asked me a couple questions they looked at my X-rays from previous doctor and wanted to give me Motrin for the pain and therapy. I can’t take nsaids because my GI told me not to take the because of my stomach problems. I explained to them that my insurance does not pay for all my therapy and I don’t have that kind of money. He gave me exercises to do for 3 weeks with ice application which I did and I’m still in pain after more than 6 weeks after the exercises. I went there today and first of all nobody there looks happy except the young black girl that did the X-rays today. No one says high and mean it nor they have a smile on their face . As soon as Dr Brown enters the room he doesn’t even sit down he just asks me how I feel which I said a little better but still have she I try to get dress, drive, shake botlles or work which involves reaching over my shoulder to high shelves it hurts to my elbow and wrist. His words are “ your X-ray looks normal there is no surgery here you need therapy there is nothing else I can do for you there is no surgery here believe me I’m a surgeon and there is no surgery here” . I was in complete shock hearing him talking to me like that because who is talking about having surgery?, not me. There is no need for those words nor the tone of voice nor the arrogance of “I’m a surgeon”. I was there to be assessed about my apparently bursitis due to a Flu shot tha was done on October 16 and have not gotten better after a steroid shot , ice , moist heat , corner push ups and 5lbs weight exercise. It’s now January 24 th and Still in pain. Did he sit down and talk to me like a doctor that shows empathy to his patients? No, instead he forgot peoples health is their own individual health, we are not one size fits all. I can’t afford therapy , my insurance only covers a small part of it. Believe me I received a big fat bill from previous therapy for other problems. Have a heart not just a brain. I went home crying and I did schedule one therapy but I really don’t want to go because I’m scarred for life.Just walking into the building is going to stir up all kinds of emotions good and bad.

Waited in exam room over 45 mins and no one came until I stuck my head out and alerted them. That was an earlier visit. Recently, arrived to my appt. only to be be told my referral expires the next day. I should have been told that when I made the appt. Then after waiting, sec. announces the doc is behind an hr and 45 mins at least. Some people had been waiting 2 hrs. Only about 6 of us altogether in waiting room. I could have been called before I left home. Also, I didnt care for the rude PT doc I had earlier. Condescending attitude.

Dr. Romash did an out dated surgery that is not the best pratice in this Era and ended up costing me my career.  Over year and half later and still cant use my leg like did even with the injury prior surgery. Had to have another surgery from another doc and they were unable to fix the issue  since Im military I cant file a Law suit. I just have to walk away from a career that I love and move on with my life.  Thank you for taking away all that I have known.  Best part was when I kept telling him something was wrong he would just blow me off and move on to his next patient.  Get paid and let your patients suffer for the rest of your life should be SMOC moto.  Not to mention three other service members suffered from poor treatment from Dr. Romash. Thank you PA-C Lena Sifen for not listing to my concerns. She was to busy playing puppet for romash.

Highly recommend for anyone that is looking for a quality orthopedic center in the Hampton Roads area. After not being able to walk because of a sports injury, Dr Romash and his P.A. Lena Sifen got me back and on my feet in just a few short months after surgery. The PT department is just as great working with your availability and wanting to get you back to normal ASAP. I highly recommend SMOC.

I️ only came here because it was a follow up after ER Doctor that had been on call. 1st appt had to wait 45 min to be seen . Second appt. came all they from NC only to be told I️ wasn’t scheduled - when I️ had the appointment card right in front of me. 3rd appt waited 1.5 hours and 4th appt. waited over 2.5 hours and was only seen then because I️ had to pick my child up. Then trying to call and make an appt. was like calling the president - on hold for over 9.5 minutes - only to have to hang up and try back. This happens a lot . I would not recommend this facility there is absolutely no consideration for patients - it’s all about how many they can squeeze in and over book. Utter lack of respect for clients.

Dr Brown is rude and disrespectful...doesnt take time to explain his findings....literally demeaned me and belittled my former orthopedic doctor(from a different state). Wasnt gentle in his manipulation of an injured area and wouldnt explain or explore the differences between my previous doctors findings and what he claimed was wrong.

The doctor was ok. Turns out he doesnt do the surgery I need. Also ok. Now heres the part that gives them a 2 star. I have Tricare Prime. I love going to MTF facilities. I have always been treated with the utmost respect and there has never been a snag in scheduling or any problems seeing specialists, getting the help I need and being treated like a human being.I was told by the doctor that I need physical therapy and he would refer me along to an arthroscopic surgeon. I am also out on FMLA, which between waiting for appointments and and tests and specialists, is due to run out very very soon. Like ten days soon. I have been having this problem since August. So, I get a call from physical therapy several days later. No referrals have been put into healthnet. My active duty husband on his way to work goes to the office to bring in a form for an FMLA extension, which is literally a check box and a date request. The hard work was done by the Tricare clinic for free. To fill out the check box and date they want $20. My husband pays it. Then they say the doctor isnt there and it will take 8-10 days to check a box. But we could expedite it for $45. They also told him they dont see anything about a referral to another surgeon but the physical therapy has been approved. A quick check of healthnet proved otherwise.Unreal.So, after pleading my case to the Tricare clinic, my doctor he very next day agreed to fill out the check box for free and refer me to a different surgeon. None of this BS and no more headache. Now the kicker is, Ive been in serious pain since he beginning of August, I had to use a wheelchair (which my lovely clinic provided for me) and otherwise have to use a brace just to walk. I need surgery, not just to be made to hurry up and wait until office staff gets their acts together. I am also on time limits from the FMLA, and all this time doodadding around has actually cost me money. Im out of work until I can pull 8 hour shifts on my feet. I need this problem fixed promptly so I can resume my life. This place has subpar customer service. I work in the healthcare field and I personally would never treat patients this way. I have called to get referrals, plead patients cases, and yes, have even called Tricare PCMs to get authorization for patients in need. A patient should never have to call and pester office staff to navigate the insurance for them. People are literally paid to do just this.I fully expect a pithy comment from the clinic which somehow blames me for this error and shows their commitment to customer service. Ive read all the other reviews and the responses and SMOC just sounds like they arent listening to patients and instead listening to excuses from their own staff. We arent all wrong guys. You need to listen to your patients complaints and do better.

I would highly recommend SMOC!! They saved my brothers life. When a doctor from another group had mentioned it was the worst break he had ever seen in his profession I was concerned. Dr. DiStasio came in without hesitation and fixed a life threatening pelvis break on my brother. Im very thankful for his amazing experience! Dr DiStasio came out after surgery and explained everything so simply it put everyone at ease. They are very caring and experienced doctors.

Being a military spouse, I fall victim to the slow healthcare process and protocol of Tricare. I received X-rays, an MRI, and a surgical referral all from military doctors for an injured shoulder in my dominant arm. However, due to the overwhelming amount of orthopedic surgeries needed at the military hospital, dependents (spouses and children of active duty military) are sent to civilian doctors that accept Tricare. My experience with military specialists had been superb and I had a seasoned orthopedic specialist recommend me for surgery after an extensive one hour consultation which involved multiple joint tests, manipulations, review of all of my scans, and a pain injection. Her recommendation to refer me for surgery did not come lightly! Having a friend that was a radiologist (a Yale graduate) at the military hospital, I had my MRI read twice just to confirm the extent of my injury.Flash forward three weeks later and I arrive at Dr. Sam Brown’s dilapidated 1970’s office for what I believe to be a consultation prior to the recommended surgery. I spoke with his PA for approximately 5-8 minutes who did only two range of motion assessments on my inflicted arm and promptly left the exam room. I gave him my X-rays, MRI, and my MRI report to review with Dr. Brown. Hardly 3 minutes later, Dr. Brown shows up to discuss my shoulder. My “consultation” consisted of 10 minutes of him explaining to me that I need to go to the gym and that he would not be the one to perform the surgery on me. I was shocked and offended by his lack of professionalism. He never performed any type of range of motion exercises (or laid a hand on me, period), asked about my pain levels, or inquired about activities that affect my shoulder and it’s instability. He stated that he “hates MRI reports from the military hospital because they’re never correct”, insulting doctors that are just as qualified (if not more qualified!) to give their professional medical opinion. IF I were to follow his baloney advice of “going to the gym”, he didn’t even recommend exercises that I should perform or avoid. As far as options go for orthopedic specialists and surgeons, there are many other local doctors that can care for your orthopedic injuries that possess professional tact and bedside manner. This is NOT the place you want to go to receive care!

Sounds crazy but I actually looked forward to my Appointments, it was a nice and relaxed setting. Again, thank you all for your help.
