When I came to UNC, I was very impressed to learn of the CAPS services. However, when arriving for help, I was disappointed that all they could do is refer me to an external therapist . Some students are drowning in debt, during a pandemic, and it would be nice if CAPS could work with students more, as oppose to turning them away (since our fees help pay for it). Not everyone has the money for therapy and some people do not even bother seeking help (like the kid that just tried to commit suicide).

I’m in an isolation dorm due to testing positive for covid and when I relayed to the counselor that I was feeling anxious and depressed with little motivation she just told me to hold out and get through it.

My experience at CAPS was nothing like all these negative reviews are saying. I went to the initial assessment and was greeted cheerfully and given a clear understanding of the process. The provider I saw was friendly, understanding, and supportive. Since I was in need of both short- and long-term counseling (which they do not provide), my provider and I worked out a solution where she would help me find a long-term provider and in the meantime would schedule some weekly appointments with me so that I was not left without support. I did not get a Google search print-out. She emailed me names and numbers of three providers who are in-network and specialize in the type of care I was seeking.Overall, I would highly recommend this place for people who are struggling. If youre confused or are displeased with the service, communicate it! Ask for clarification. Let them know what it is that you need or what went wrong. They have an email and phone number for this.Super happy this place exists, and that I (and others) have got a place to go to for support.

By the way, CAPS appears to be forging positive reviews, just read the language used in the latest positive review and the self-rating from a CAPS account (just goes to show how bad the service at CAPS is because of lack of accountability and more concern with maintaining at least two stars on Google Maps). If you are looking for someone to talk to, do not go here, unless you are drug seeking (medication management). Unfortunately drug therapy remains the most popular therapy in psychology, CAPS provides no exception.

I was experiecing a difficult time on campus spring 2020 due to stress and ultimately caused me to diagnosed with GAD and major depressive disorder. First thing, they had me fill a questionnaire and then have a consultation with one of therapist to get an idea of what was going on with me as well as giving me the chance to tell my story. They then referred me to another therapist at CAPS, and I had Erin Scott as my assigned therapist. Erin was amazing, she allow me to take the time to talk about what had happened to me, and basically allowed me to vulnerable in front of her and talk my story to her in a very comfortable setting. She was super understanding, very kind and considerate, and takes her job very seriously. I felt lucky to have her as my therapist, honestly. I was also referred to see a psychiatrist as well, Todd Colucci. He was doing his job, but the first day I went to see him, it slightly made me slightly uncomfortable and awkward because he started to talk about things that were not tangent to what was going on. I was not sure if he was trying to lighten the mood up, but I felt kind of weird being that I expose my vulnerability to him and I broke down. I am not sure about the negative reviews experienced by other students, but personally for me, I had a good experience with CAPS.

Terrible. Just go off campus. Not only are therapists flat out mean, but they dont help at all. CAPS refers students out because the university does not want the liability of treating students. Its as simple as that. The school literally has a billion dollar endowment. Theres no reason why funds shouldnt be given. Save yourself some time and a painful experience and go else where.

Gave them three shots because theyre free. I experienced a traumatic event in the past and sought treatment with CAPS so that my experience wouldnt effect my studies. Went in and had to fill out a questionnaire each time. Paired with any social worker not a psychologist. All three listened and then gave me a google referral list of therapists. The list did not include their costs.I was given the impression that CAPS does not have the means to treat people who are dealing with serious or even moderate issues (like generalized anxiety or depression, or trauma, or PTSD, etc.).Im seeking a therapist off campus. I feel my experience would have been better had I been paying for it.Edit: Response to the owner:It wasnt just a lack of costs. The list wasnt any meaningful from the Google search I could have done myself for therapists in the area. CAPS is misleading, and my time with the social workers wasnt meaningful.

I also did not like my time with CAPS. One of the biggest reasons why I didnt is because I personally feel that they are too embedded within the university, and that made going there uncomfortable. In addition to this, my therapist did not take confidentiality seriously when I questioned her about it. She actually gave me a tone that essentially sounded like I was making a big deal out of nothing. The second reason I did not like CAPS is their propensity to blame the student for their problems. Which you can see in previous comments.I did not receive the compassion, understanding, empathy, and professionalism that I needed in order to receive quality mental health care. Forget about the google referral list they give you. Just do your own research for providers that meet your needs. I honestly believe that as UNC students our mental health would be better served off campus, away and separate from our university.

Experiences are in line with the comments here.On an even BIGGER note, UNC needs an ambulance dedicated only to mental health care for those students with mental illnesses or suicidal rather than using police. They can have nurses run it. The presence of the police can easily cause a patient or student to feel like they’ve done something wrong. Mental illness is nothing criminal so it doesn’t make sense to be picked up or surveillance(they do this I had it happened to a friend) by the police. Also, using the police stigmatizes mental health as something wrong. End the use of police on students with mental health issues.Final note: my friend ultimately ended up leaving the university. It turned out he didnt have a serious mental illness after all. UNC is very quick to diagnose. I highly suggest you go to see someone off campus who is better trained, empathetic, and professional. Some of the people that work here have business degrees. Go see someone who actually went to school for this field. Dont see someone who got into it after working on Wall Street. And if you do go here, at least look at the biographies of the therapists/social workers. See if you can select one yourself. One that you feel comfortable and safe with.

At CAPS, youre going to find a diverse array of providers who understand the mental health challenges of being a UNC student. They are caring, supportive and professional. Highly recommended service.

CAPS is terrible. If you can afford it, go somewhere else. They don’t do anything to help at all and some of the therapists are flat out mean. I can’t believe they’re allowed to call themselves a mental health service

These folks really care about UNC student and post-doc well-being. Highly recommended to anyone who needs to talk to an unbiased listener (bonus: they are professionals!) about struggles.

Too much bureaucracy here. They led my girlfriend in a circle when she tried to switch therapists. She was told to go to front desk, who told her to ask her therapist, who told her to go back to front desk, who had her fill out an initial questionnaire because they have to do it every time even if you already a patient there (???), and then the lady in charge very rudely told her to go back to her original therapist in a tone similar to Why are you questioning this? This isnt supposed to be done. This has never been done before. Sometimes you and your therapist arent a match, so it is perfectly logical to try to find someone who is. Why is this not allowed?

CAPS was okay when I was on main campus, but now that Im *still* a UNC student but at an official UNC site away from main campus I tried to use their referral service and the referrer basically said Heres what I found on Google thats in-network, Im not sure how much it costs.

If you want any actual help at all do not go here. It blows my mind that they allow this place to give such poor care to students in need.
