Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) ENT Bldg.2-2 has a wonderful front desk clerks and ENT staff. Like to mention one heath providers name. I was seen recently by PA Concepcion. She knows how to take care of her ptients with the proper care and her patient customer service is 5-star +. So if any military or retired military need a top notch ENT health care provider then you need to make an appointment to see her.....Thanks ENT (OTOLARYNGOLOGY) for all the hard work you folks do for active/retired military personnel in taking care of their health needs...😋....

I recently had to go to the Emergency Room and I was so impressed with the care I received. My nurses, doctors and interns seemed to genuinely care about their patients. The wait time was reasonable and once I was in a bed they checked on me often. Doctors answered all of my questions and were supportive of my decisions for treatment and whether or not I was admitted into the hospital. Hands down best Emergency Room visit I have had.

The pharmacy is a really bad joke at best. I dread any time I have to have my prescriptions refilled because it takes me an hour minimum, regardless of what time I show up. In the ~15 times I’ve been here, there have never been any more than 4 people at the 12 windows they have. Every other part of the hospital is lovely, but the pharmacy needs a complete restructure; it’s about as inefficient as it comes.

I had plans to deliver at a birth center but I needed to be induced so I came here in 2019. I had no issues with any staff, and I can recall some nurses who were phenomenal. I loved the midwife who delivered my son, she and my nurse were so willing to work with all my requests for delivery. I had previously given birth at Tri-City which was very traumatic so I was very afraid to give birth at a hospital again but I had a great experience here. I took advantage of the doula program offered and Im so glad I did because she was wonderful and so helpful during labor. I am giving it 4 stars because I can see some room for improvements.

Constantly joking around with each other while patients waited for help. There is also no privacy whatsoever. I was on a gerny separated by a curtain. On my left a guy was getting a prostate exam due to painful urination. On my right a guy was being treated for an STD & eye infection. I heard it all. THEN, A little old cleaning lady came in & emptied the trash by reaching in & grabbing it without changing the bag. The floors & walls were not clean either. I went straight home & took a hot shower scrubbing the hebegeebies off!

When they do call they leave a voicemail and there are no direct call back numbers to their office. Have to start over again with appointment line to message to waiting for a call. The wait times are terrible, especially the pharmacy. We waited over 2 hours because they “forgot to call my number”. To be honest, it’s not entirely their fault since for some reason everyone who was once in the military decides to bring their entire family here even though they can go to a civilian hospital. Please if you aren’t active duty, DON’T come to this hospital. You are just going to make the wait times for people who are active, that have to go here, even worse.

Except for a basic exam of vitals, & listening to heart and lungs, husband dismissed as having a common virus. Staff nice and professional, but no willingness to go extra mile. No labs or rapid flu test taken as head doc on duty said it was likely a virus similar to flu but not flu....we dont typically see flu this time of year. Well, how about ruling it out for certain?! They dont necessarily have to go extra mile bc theyre protected from being sued. I mean, sure they are the experts and know more than we did, but they just seemed very complacent. I normally don’t leave reviews and especially a long one but I believe this one is well deserved!!!My spouse, is active military. We are allowed to go to our closets ER where we live at. (Murrieta, Menifee and Temecula) However, the experiences are horrible. I saw malpractices and received lack of patient care. Two ER locations and an Urgent Care mis-diagnosed and did not identify what’s going on with my spouse. Blood work, physical examination and X-ray. Nothing!!! Leaving him with so much pain and no medication. Over 18 days trying to find good doctor to help my husband and give him proper pain medications.Oh yeah, previous years ER at Loma Linda (Murrieta) made unnecessary 2nd incision in the wrong area causing extra pain and more damage. Good reason not to take my spouse there ever again.I live about 1 hr n 15-20 minutes away from Balboa Naval Medical Center. I decided to drive him there. The first time we were at ER little after 12am, checking in was surprisingly decent and fast. Nurses and doctors doing their jobs, evaluating my spouse thoroughly and ultrasound. Finally, they found what’s causing the pain but the surgeon advise to not operate on my spouse due to the location and possible complications. I was a bit upset because I don’t want to see my spouse endure any more pain. They sent us back home with instructions, antibiotics and pain medications. Few days later I knew it was time to go back and I know he will finally get cut.Second time in the ER. Checking in was fast and friendly. Same nurse and doctor greeted us. Very friendly and humorous. They remembered our case. Did a second ultrasound for verification and without hesitation they said, now they can do what needs to be done. My spouse is now on recovery mode after long 25 days of pain and discomfort.Thank you to the surgeon at ER who made me understand and left me with no choice but to trust his decision. For my spouse’s safety and prevent unnecessary complication. To the ER staff, LT Ellis, Jeff, Lt Yu (student), LT Love, LT H (nurse) and rest of the staffs and nurses who attended to my spouse. Really thank you very much. very impressive how well LT Ellis guiding his student with the procedures and reminding to talk to the patient. Can’t forget the humor! the funny comments, conversations kept me at ease. I was able to be calm and help my spouse be calm. LT Ellis, Jeff is a great teacher and mentor. Very impressive. To much to type But ER is hit or miss in docs being respectful or kind to patients literally had one walk in and say I can not help you because he didnt know what to do with me. Right side ab pain nasea vomiting and more. Then there is Breast health Clinic who claims they are use to old ladies who bring them cookies and get offended when they offend you and you call them on it. To the point of a doc actually lying to the commander of hospital a situation yet to be resolved. I will never go back to this hospital and will work with our State Reps to find solutions for why this hospital has declined in patient care so badly. I was sent here early from Japan because of my Breast Health condition and now I am being treated by a doc out in town. Why? Oh because according to commanders letter and my not being happy with a nurse ! they are not equipt to handle my care. He never contacted me he only listened to the bias doc and her nurse. I truly feel this is because she is on board of hospital well that doesnt mean she or any of them should be allowed to bully or lie and I nor any other patient should have to fight for our care we should have caring docs that want to see us and not act as if we are ruining their day by being there. As I stated about the nurse if if they dont want the civilian jobs Im positive many others would take them and as for the military members its not always going to be old ladies bringing cookies people are going to disagree or not be happy you need to be professional, patients are not there to be your best friends. Yes we will be nice or cordial but because one doesnt want to speak to a nurse because she is unhappy with her doesnt mean throw a fit. Not everyone is going to be happy for me Balboa is awful I will never let them touch me again !!

I am not sure if the other reviews were written by actual patients but I disagree 100%. Congressman should visit this hospital and see how military personnel are treated by Navy Doctors. These doctors are more concerned with protecting the Navy from paying out disability to service members. This is why a large number of military personnel go to civilian doctors and pay out of pocket.

This is the dirtiest hospital that I have ever been to and to think that this is a military hospital. This is hazardous and I am going to report this.I went in after falling while hiking & my finger clearly looks abnormal but according to the nurse she didnt think there was anything wrong with it and wrote it off as a bone spur (I also heard another nurse telling her that it doesnt make sense if I have never had an issue with that finger before). I dont even think she waited for my xray results, I could hear her calling to get a status for my xray and saying I dont think there is anything wrong with it. But whatever right? It was my first visit at the naval medical center on Friday the 15 of 2017. I went to the ER for severe abdominal pain while pregnant. My visit started at 7pm and was out of there at 2am. My first experience at the naval medical center has been traumatizing. First, I got blood drawn and was left with a botched IV and while it taped on it was pressing into my muscle so much so that I forgot about my abdominal pain. I told the corpsman that the pain was 10 and wanted to get taken out. She never came back. I asked my husband to get someone to get the IV out before he pulled it out. The doctor was able to come in and remove it. The doctor ordered an ultra sound in radiology. He did estimate about an hour, which was ok. We waited two hours for the tech to give us the order to come up and get the ultra sound. A corpsman was able to take us to the radiology and as he knocked on the door she had just woken up. While getting the ultrasound she was yawning and her eyes were very low. I went back down to the ER and waited for another hour and a half for the results. At this time, I asked to be discharged because I was already there for 6 hours and mentally tired and feeling well. After the 7 hours total a new doctor, I didnt know the old doctor left, came in and explained my results which came back normal and couldnt tell me what was wrong. This has honestly been the worst experience Ive ever had and I will never go back to the emergency room at NMCSD.

Turns out, they dont have a single appointment available. They havent made me one real appointment yet and I am 39 weeks pregnant. They put me on a walk-in list and have me call around to NTC and Miramar to see if theres ANYONE who can take me.I waited 3 hours to be seen just to check my vitals the other day. I asked to file a complaint and was blown off. My husband showed up and was seen the same day, in person, to explain our complaint for lack of good medical care. Why am I lesser than he when it is my body?My doctor actually didnt want to explain the process of induction to me, but wanted me to schedule for one that was not medically necessary. She didnt mind pointing out that it was her lunch break even though my children sat for 3 hours and had to skip lunch themselves and were in the middle of crying as she said it- same as last time.Shes the most disoriented doctor Ive ever encountered and I trust her as much as I trust myself to deliver my own baby, even though I can not see past my belly. She couldnt make up her mind about whether I had diabetes and suggested we review my ultrasounds, but couldnt furnish those things or remember giving me all this reason to worry.Even the customer complaint guy commented that they are aware the OB department is a mess and they are so overloaded that they dont know how to fix it. This is my 3rd child and the last, because Ill be damned if I get stuck with these people pouring stress into another pregnancy of mine as if that doesnt affect the baby!Look at previous reviews by others- people actually say things like, I would rather die than return here. The staff was condescending. ETC, Its really sad. And good luck parking even if you do decide to try it: it takes about a half hour to find a spot. Even with my parking pass, there are no available spots to park in even designated areas and the stalls are so close together that you cant open your door on both sides of the car- you have to unload passengers then squeeze in, which makes getting small children out of carseats absolutely impossible, especially with a belly to work around. My kids have had to exit through the trunk. This place is the worst quality of care Ive ever in my life dreamt of.

I m specifically writing a review for Operation PINC. This is a walk-in contraceptive clinic in the OBGYN building. I was nervous about the whole experience going in, especially how long I was going to have to wait. I was in and out within an hour and that includes taking a pee test, getting a consult with the doctor and getting one IUD out and a new IUD in. Amazing!! I have never been more thankful for Tricare than now. Customer service was good if not great and I felt that my expectations were exceeded. Parking was the usual - the visitor parking lot is always on the full side but I can always find a spot within a few minutes. I highly recommend taking advantage of this clinic if you are active duty and/or a dependent!

February 27th 2016: 1. today I was at the Naval Hospital 1st for a blood test (It didnt hurt)! Tomorrow, I will be back for my medial evaluation follow up for prostate cancer. 2. After the biopsy I was informed of the cancer. My doctors suggested a treatment. Was I fearful? No. I had absolute faith & trust in their suggestions and the amazing capability of the hospital, the staff and the equipment. Results all went as planned. 2. Today, as I was walking through the walkways, I thought to myself, I wish I was young again, cause this would be the place for my career in the field of helping people. 3. Tomorrow I will take photos and post them on my Facebook for the general public and my family members on the east cost. I know for a fact that This facility (akin to many military & VA hospitals) is the best of medical personal, and all the modern equipment that is up to date for helping persons who are ill. Anyone reading this post, just might consider visiting the Naval Hospital and check into the volunteer programs. Youd me more than welcomed. Sincerely & encouraging yours, Bruce Warren Marchetta Th.d. professional hypnotherapist educator. and Volunteer for the VA hospital & clinics. Naval (Korean War) Veteran. God bless our military nation & worldwide.

Just a heads up for people getting their meds from the pharmacy, its takes 25mins to check in then 35mins for them to find it. Rude front desk, but you see them chit-chatting behind, civillian and enlisted.

Review for Dr. Rivera: conducted clean, efficient hernia repair with minimal scarring. Looks far better than what most hernia post-op patients look like, with huge lines down their stomach. Mine is just an inch and looks like a cool battle scar. Love it. Abdominals functioning great! Slowly building up my fitness to what it was a year ago, before my hernia became a big problem. Mesh doesnt feel strange anymore. Can do flutter kicks with legs out straight without my abs giving up. When I was fit, I still couldnt hold one leg straight, hovering over the ground, while the other one lifts (scissor kick with hold). Now, even just getting back into my hardcore stuff, Im doing them, and I am so proud of myself! This repair has been so significant for me. To see that I can do a set of scissor kicks without bending my knees or taking a break...I just wanna cry for joy. Thank you, surgery team. Everyone from start to finish (waiting room, holding, pre-, present, and post-) were all amazing. Delighted to see nurses and doctors still be nice to the patient even with the continuous schedule of dealing with them. You guys work hard.Review for Hospital: Next time, when theres construction going on and it blocks certain areas, dont make the signs impossible to understand where Im late to my appointment. I was 30min early and ended up on time...which is late. Thats bad, mmkay? Also, I was not called the day prior to my surgery and got the run around with the numbers provided. I called the first one to get the time for my surgery and she didnt know so transferred me to NON-WORKING NUMBER. SERIOUSLY. Get your act together on that. Im a chill patient. When I was a kid I practically lived in a hospital so I know you guys work hard, but that was ridiculous. Had to call four times to get an answer. Fix this. Also, I saw a kid in the waiting room whose mom was told to come in super early. They had him in surgery gown and was waiting for hours. HOURS. WHY!? I was called BEFORE him. WHY!? You messed up. That poor kid. Kids shouldnt have to go through that. Neither should the parents. Awful. Id give those two incidents negative stars but I really like Dr. Rivera and the general staff who helped me.

I am disgusted by the ER’s treatment of my pregnant wife. We went to the ER Friday evening, 9/15/2017, because she was having pain 8-9/10 severe LLQ abdominal pain which was overshadowed when a corpsman placed an IV in to her muscle. Pretty sure IVs go in veins… After she expressed that it was a 10/10 to another corpsman and wanted it removed, the corpsman acknowledge it but never came back. Thankfully I found her doctor to ask him to remove it, which he reluctantly did after I told him I’d take it out myself. After waiting for two hours, the Ultrasound tech was ready to see us, however when we got upstairs and knocked on the door, we actually just had woken the tech up. After 45mins of images with the tech dozing off, we came back down to the ER, overall exhausted from the entire ordeal and were ready to go, but of course we could not leave until the doctor discharged us. 30 mins later the same corpsman who disappeared us earlier came back to ask for a new blood lab to be drawn. We of course refused and a doctor who had taken over for our first doc discharged us. I’m not sure how much effort is needed to communicate to your patient that ‘I’ll be leaving now and Dr. (new doc name) will be taking over,” but the consideration and professionalism would have been much obliged. All in all, our visit ran from 7pm to 2am and they couldn’t even give us a hint into what was wrong with her. This was my wife’s first time in a MTF and I’m sad, angry, annoyed with the professionalism and level of care this ER gave. And speaking as a staff member and as a corpsman, I’ll never bring my wife here again, let alone delivery our child here. This department is a joke of Navy Medicine’s values of world class care, anywhere, anytime.

NMCSD has a system. Let me clue you in. First, *the ER is exactly like ANY ER at any other hospital in San Diego!* Try going to Kaiser, Mercy, or Scripps. 7-8 hour wait as well. Why? Its FREE! No co-pay. All the complainers about wait times? I too have tried the ER route, sometimes its 3-4 hours. Sometimes I have walked out and toughed it out until the next day. That is why the wait is so long at NMCSD. If youre going for: flu, fever, sore throat, or other non-emergency issues, that is how they will log it. And you are GOING TO WAIT. Sorry! You are best to: schedule an appointment ASAP on the appointment line, instead of strolling in and expecting to seen in an hour. Second clue: PARKING. If you think youre going to roll up and grab a spot close, forget it. PLAN AHEAD to park. We have gotten nothing but great treatment, LIFE SAVING treatment to be exact and it kicks the heck out of any civilian hospital by a mile. The Pregnant woman poster below complaining about “walking too far” first of all, walking is good for you, and thats the DEAL with NMCSD you walk, A LOT - they GIVE you a stork parking pass in in you last 4-6 weeks - thats it sunshine. Other hospitals in San Diego, they give you NOTHING, so be grateful! The other 1 star poster, Genoveva Flores, You were seen by TWO M.D.s, had your tests done, tests read, and it came back negative, nothing wrong, you said it yourself. Not too shabby considering Kaiser or the others would have to contact your insurance for testing AND well, theres that Co-Pay youd have if you were not blessed with practically FREE FIVE STAR treatment. By all means, the one stars, go outside to other hospitals, I did. In my frustration, I went “outside” of network. Only to be folded RIGHT BACK IN because it was WORSE at a place like Alvarado. NO appointments, never saw the same doctor twice, and the wait rooms were dirty, over crowded, and looked like a third world country where English is the second language. At least at NMCSD, THEY SPEAK ENGLISH!

My six year old daughter was brought to Balboa via life-flight on 12 April 2015. She had uncontrollable seizures and threw up while seizing causing her to aspirate. She had to be put on a ventilator and flown from TriCity Medical to Balboa. EVERY doctor, nurse, corpsman, resident, intern and medical student did a PHENOMENAL job working on keeping my little girl alive. They were all professional, friendly and very willing to answer my questions. The entire staff, down to the cleaning lady, was approachable and took the time to check on myself and my daughter. We were there for a week, but she pulled through with flying colors. I am on the process of writing up a thank you letter to the Director of the hospital, listing the names of all of these amazing professionals that took such amazing care of my daughter AND took their own time to check up on us after we left the PICU to see how she was progressing. I HIGHLY recommend seeking treatment from any of the professionals that work at this facility. I served 22yrs in the Marine Corps and have not always had favorable experiences with Navy Medicine. My faith in the system has been restored after this recent ordeal and I will be forever thankful to the professionals at NMCSD Balboa.

I was vacationing in San Diego and started to hemmorhage from a recent hysterectomy after some sutures came undone. The staff was amazing and my husband and I counted about 24 staff members (doctors and nurses) who attended to me and realized the issue was severe. This was a significant departure from the care (or lack thereof) we are accustomed to in Las Vegas. I was in and out (with anesthesia & surgery) within 6 hours. There were approximately 4 anesthesiologists who listened to my concerns since I have had severe reactions in the past. I was awake immediately and not groggy or nauseous and able to go back to the Navy Lodge to sleep in a regular bed. My bleeding has subsided and they released me with comprehensive instructions. Couldnt be more pleased about the quality of care at this facility.

Terrible. The people behind the ER front desk are extremely rude. They forgot about me and left me in the back after my examination. The dentist here said he cant help with my pain since hes not familiar with where stuff is kept. What a joke. Go home and take a pain killer is my treatment.

Service members not given proper treatment in ER. No Tests done. Asked 2 questions and given 3 meds. This mom is not happy at all. They need tests to determine the exact problem. Not meds that are addictive without proper diagnostic testing. Shameful our servive members dont get better care!!!!

20 years ago while training at mcrd san diego I was seen here when it was still called balboa hospital. I had a injured leg. The military doctor merely looked at it and declared it cellulitis. After 2 months of training on it I made my way back home and promptly went to the ER in my home state. The first thing the civilian doctor ordered was xrays after looking at my leg. The result was that my Fibula (The smaller of the two leg bones located below the knee cap.) was broken. I was put in a cast and thankfully healed up without additional surgery after the beating it took at the mcrd much to the surprise of the civilian doctors.

I definitely recommend if you need or your child needs to get seen asap make sure you get the numbers of the nurses or assistants of the doctor youre seeing youll definitely get a faster appointment instead of calling the appointment number.

Awful!! Waited forever to be seen and when I did get seen I was told I couldnt bring my son back with me. They have a new policy that no one under 12 can come back to the emergency room unless theyre the patient. Which means I had to get seen at a civilian ER
