Balayage by Marissa R. I’ve had wonderful haircuts by Bri, who is no longer at the salon. Marissa cut and colored my hair last night for the first time and it’s gorgeous. She was meticulous and checked at multiple points throughout the process if I liked the color, continuously referenced my photos I brought, and lastly checked in various lighting that I liked it before walking out. I was treated terrible at this salon. I will never be back.I set an appointment for Friday, June 26th for a cut & style for my family photos that evening.At the time of scheduling, they collected my credit card information & informed me that I would be charged 50% of the service if I canceled within 24 hours. I understood the policy, and willingly complied.15 minutes before my appointment, the receptionist Izzy called me to say my stylist was sick and there was no one else who could take me. So, to everyone thinking about using this salon- if you cancel 15 minutes before your appointment you could be charged up to hundreds of dollars (depending on the service) due to their 50% policy, but if they cancel on you (even though you are equally dependent on this appointment), they will do nothing for you.When I expressed my frustration and asked to speak to a manager I was informed she was busy. I asked for her name but the receptionist said I do not have to disclose this information and that was the end of the conversation.5 minutes later Izzy called back and got me in with Amber (who had a cancellation). Amber was amazing and the only reason this review is 2 stars instead of 1.I felt treated so poorly. These people have no respect for their clients!!!

I was in town to get my hair done for a wedding. I called and told them what services I needed which was my hair curled and styled. When I got there I was showing the hairdresser some pictures of a simple top braid with curls that I wanted and she could not accommodate me. She said the front desk booked me as a wash and blow out so a half hour appointment when I told them I would come with clean hair ready for styling. I obviously was disappointed and the hairdresser simply said well I guess I cant give you what you want today then. She continued to say that the front desk doesnt do hair so they sometimes dont book correctly. I had no other option because the wedding was a few hours away and although she did curl my hair pretty I still walked away not getting the services I wanted. If from outta town and booking here I would be very detailed about how much time you need and what youre looking for.

Mens haircut? I would go somewhere else.Look, I don’t like writing bad reviews, especially of local places. However, this was a really bad haircut. I had Emily J. and while she was very polite, she did not do a good job with my hair. Besides not keeping the length I requested, just basic stuff like layering, balance, and symmetry were poorly done. I showed her this photo (last one below) and asked to keep the top longer. Besides making it way too short, the left and right sides were different lengths, the cut on the bangs was not symmetrical, and the layering was uneven. It was really shocking for me, expecting at least a higher level of quality than Great Clips given the higher prices.

Malstrom was very clean, friendly, and professional. Hali cut my long quarantine hair and I trusted her judgment and she did a great job! (Im sure everyone else would do a great job, too!) Will definitely go back.👍

I had my first ever hair color.. actually balayage done here yesterday! Lauren attended me. She is like the youngest stylist there but really talented. Being a first timer, I didnt know exactly what I wanted but she did an amazing job!! The staff is very friendly and the salon atmosphere is good as well. Super happy!! :)

The first time I visited this salon I booked a cut, root touch up and highlights. I came out with a cut and color that I LOVED. My hair was super manageable and styled perfectly when I left.I booked the same service again with the same stylist to get my hair done for family photos. This time she had double booked herself and was in a huge hurry. My highlights were super chunky and streaky, and my layers came out looking like I had gone through a lawn mower. I wasn’t able to see any of these problems before I left because I was sent out the door with my hair half styled, still majorly wet and frizzy.I’m unable to style it straight because of the choppy layers and color which are only disguised by curling it.

I am in town from California. Went in for a much needed cut and color, Lauren was delightful. Didnt give me a hard time about my self inflicted cut. She was really quick and just the right amount of talkative. Great head massage. 👍

Best salon in Utah hands down! My color is perfect every time. If there’s ever an issue they are so kind and open to fixing it. (Even though any fault I’ve experienced is due to my own miscommunications!) I always love a Malstrom day! Everyone here is genuine, thoughtful, and so talented! I especially love Tricia of course, but I’m biased :)

Love getting my hair cut here. Alisa has been cutting my very difficult hair quite a while now and has never done me wrong. Malstrom is also a very clean and professional as well as hospitable. Love this place!

I am new to Malstrom and started seeing Marissa. After reading some of the reviews on her blonding techniques, I can say I did not have the same experience as others. I am a dark brunette who had red tones in my hair and I was looking to phase out the red and turn into a blonde. Not only was the consultation very informative but I was blown away by the results achieved first try! Her bio on the salon site states her expertise is in blonding and this proved to be accurate in my case! I am very happy with my results and I cannot wait to go back in a few weeks to keep achieving that look I am desiring! THANK YOU Marissa!!

Amber cut my hair so fast and it turned out amazing, exactly how I wanted. She also gave me tons of recommendations on products to use and was extremely helpful and nice to talk to. Overall it was a great experience and I would highly recommend.

I went in to get my hair lightened, knowing my hair was dark, I was okay with a lighter brown. I wanted to let my grey grow out so I requested leaving the root and blending it out. The bleach was put on and my stylist left me. I was nervous because I hadn’t seen her after application and wasn’t checked on until 20 minutes later when I asked someone to find her. My hair came out so brassy orange which was exactly what I made clear I didn’t want. Marissa was my stylist whom was referred to me by my blonde friend. Her hair looks great. I wouldn’t recommend if you have dark hair trying to go for a lighter look without the orange.I then had to go to Ulta to get an all over color. This trip cost me over 200$ and my hair is chin length.

I have gone to Malstrom and Bri for years. She is wonderful, accommodating and a master with her sheers. The rest of the folks at Malstrom are very nice and they have done a great job keeping things safe for everyone!

I had Brooke as my stylist and she was absolutely amazing. Super gentle on my hair and did an awesome job. I’ve never had bangs before and decided this was the day to try them. I’m super pleased with her work, will definitely go back there again.

Im quite disappointed by the lack of creativity and taste of my hair dresser. I asked them multiple times what they thought would look good on me. They didnt respond and ended up barely cutting any of my hair. Im already making a new hair appointment at another salon.

Ive been coming to Malstrom for over 12 years and have loved it every single time!! The staff and the Malstroms are amazing, warm, and have always done right by me and friends/family. The salon has a great atmosphere and vibe with friendly staff that seem to be very experienced and professional. The salon is always clean, neat and seems to be well-sanitized, which is a relief knowing Im in good hands of professionals that take the safety of their employees and clients as #1 priority in this crazy COVID environment.I cant help noticing 1 other comment about the mask and the principal of paying $2 for the mask :-) Interesting, so here we go... :)Obviously, we all (including that particular person) know the requirements that the health department & local authorities have placed on local businesses as part of re-opening, especially salons and personal services establishments. To show up without a mask - knowing one is required - is a bit selfish and inconsiderate to say the least... To expect small local businesses that have already taken a heavy toll financially to supply you with a free mask is beyond me - especially when you already know a mask is required to get a service. A well-informed person that pays any attention to the actuality of the situation would know that these masks didnt cost 50 cents (or less) at the time businesses were re-opening. PPE supplies didnt catch up until recently where prices are starting to stabilize. Although, it is not surprising that this person didnt know, because it seems that he may be part of the problem. I think it is totally okay to not believe in wearing a mask, but when youre in public sharing common space with others, it is not just about yourself anymore - its called common courtesy. I cant speak for the salon, but Im sure glad they lost you as a client... I know I am... since I just instantly felt safer and cleaner knowing the salon doesnt have an inconsiderate client like you around. Good luck at Great Clips. Theyll charge you $5 for a mask (jk, I dont know...). I hope you bring your own mask next time when you do return to Malstrom Salon to get your bad haircut fixed.

Mälstrom salon is a great place to go if you want a nice relaxing, yet fun hair experience. If you go, I recommend going to Hali. She is super awesome! It doesn’t matter what your hair idea is, she’ll make it happen and make your hair look phenomenal. She always goes out of her way to make you experience great.

Edit to add:It is now 6 months since me disaster of an appointment. A few critical key factors after: Marissa boasted she was comfortable doing blonde highlights and consulted on a reasonable color. I have naturally blonde hair so a platinum blend is not impossible. I have now spent 3 hair appointments at $200 a piece to cover the color from hell that did not match even close that has bled through.Only hair appointment where I had a massive hair shedding and I left feeling baldish and vulnerable. And Marissas/owners professionalism completely lacked in handling the matter initially.Original post:Proceed at own risk. Outcome was not what I asked for. Poor quality and unwilling to fix it without more charges. After $160, I had to have another stylist fix my hair. It will take months for this brassy/ strawberry blonde to grow out and be unnoticeable. Dont go to Marissa.

This is my favorite and go-to hair salon. Great and fast service. Bri is very fun to talk to and talented. I have curly hair, and I have struggled to find anyone else who understands how to cut it to the extent Bri does. I highly recommend. One note - parking spots are very tight.

I have not had my hair cut in many years because of the bad experience in the past but I knew I needed my hair cut and colored so I called and made the appointment. I was going to walk out a few times and I was approached by Emily and she was very welcoming. And long story short Im so glad I did. She made me feel very comfortable and talked me through it all and she listen to what I was wanting. She did not get scissor happy and the cut and color was great. I will highly recommend her to anyone and I will be going back. Thanks Emily for making feel comfortable and giving me a great look.

Had Amber. She wasn’t great. Got a little razor happy. And when I asked her to just touch up the left side of my hair to match the right side she said “ my next customers already here.. you can come back and I can work on it...” NO. IM HERE NOW. I’m PAYING FOR YOUR TIME NOW. I have my husband and 2 children here waiting. Why would I come back!??!! When I’m here NOW!??? So completely unprofessional. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. .

Emily weaved and cut my hair last month. The colors were perfect and I loved how she styled my hair. I have had numerous compliments this last month--I look forward to styling my own hair now. Emily is a professional and she has a positive and cheerful disposition as well as a fabulous sense of style. She took the time to understand what I wanted my hair to do when we were done and then made it happen. . I recommend her highly to anyone. Thank you!!!!

This was my first time in this salon and I was really impressed. Bryson was the one who took care of me and he did a great job. Besides the fact that he was very nice and easy to talk to ( which made my experience really enjoyable) he really listened to my needs. I also have never received such a nice customer care at a hair salon. They offer a soothing drink and pamper you with a wonderful massage after washing your hair and they finish it with an extra pleasant surprise, I felt really good ! You have to come in to find out! I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and will come again! I came out feeling beautiful! I wanna thank the whole team at Malstrom for making my day so much better!

I went to Malstrom for the first time two weeks ago. Had my hair cut and colored by Bryson.He did an awesome job! I absolutely love my short hair and it was great getting to know him, he certainly transmitted the good vibes to my hair. Im still getting compliments like the first day!I Totally recommend him :)

My first visit with Malstrom Salon and it was amazing. Bri killed it! She communicated with me about everything I wanted and needed. I left there ecstatic to have finally found a hairstylist who is able to work with me and leave me feeling immensely better than when I arrived.

I love the people and the service at Malstrom Salon. The atmosphere is relaxed and chic. Mindy is apprenticing with David and has cut my hair twice and it looks great! Everyone is friendly and I love getting a cup of Aveda hot tea. Mindy has also done permanent make up tattooing on my eyebrows and eyeliner. I love it! Shes professional and clean.she walked me through what to expect during the healing process and I couldnt be happier with my eyeliner and eyebrows!

I had Mindy today to dye my hair red with copper tones, I had never done that before and I was terrified. She talked with me the whole time, SUPER friendly and when it was done I looked AMAZING!!! I will never go anywhere else, thank you SO SO SO MUCH MINDY!!

Brianne is fantastic. Ive only been to her twice, but she absolutely gets it. She knew what I wanted for my curly/wavy hair from one simple description. I have no doubt that shed do a great job on all kinds of locks. The salon itself is lovely too - branded Aveda and still approachable. Everyone there has been extremely friendly and helpful.

I loved getting my hair cut here everyone was super kind. The shampoo was so relaxing and I really liked how she cut my hair. Hali cut my hair!😁My 12 year old daughter refused to get her hair cut at Great Clips any longer. She did the research on pricing and reputation, choosing Malstrom. I made a call on Monday which was their closed day and I left a message, but first thing Tuesday morning I received a phone call and they were able to fit my daughter in that same afternoon, accommodating our busy schedule. Hali was our stylist. She was friendly, inquisitive and communicative. My daughter was smiling as 6 inches of her golden tresses fell to the floor, and she got the haircut she wanted. Thank you for the great experience!

I love this salon! I came in because someone at another salon had messed by hair up giving me drastic layers as opposed to a smoother finish. I came in early one morning to take a look and set up and appointment, and the owner stopped what he was doing and immediately set me up with an appointment with Alisa, who is amazing. She managed to take the poorly done layers and completely smooth them out while helping me keep the length since I have been growing it out.I have been back several times since and have been consistently very happy with my hair cuts. The staff is very friendly and easy to talk to and makes each experience very pleasant.

I recently went in to Malstrom as a new client. I came to Devin because another stylist had messed my hair up several days prior. I showed Devin a photo of a cool red that I wished my hair to be and he nailed it!! Not only did he give me a fantastic cut and color, but he also gave me several tips that have been extremely helpful. Devin also happens to be a make-up artist and put a fantastic red lipstick on me prior to leaving the salon and I have never felt so good! I felt like a million bucks! It hasnt even been a week since I went in to the salon, and already have more compliments on my hair than I ever remember receiving! I love it and so does everyone else! Its safe to say that I will only be seeing Devin for my hair needs from here on out! Thank you!!!

Love Malstrom! Love Courtney! By far the most reasonably priced Aveda salon Ive ever been too. The staff are very courteous and helpful. Ive never had to wait very long and have always been so happy with my cut, color, and eyebrow wax. My only complaint would be that I wish they had more parking.

This was the best experience I have ever had at a hair salon. Brooke did my hair, cut and color and I could not be happier. Such a wonderful atmosphere and everyone is treated like royalty. It really is more like a 12/5.

I got the worst haircut I have ever received here. It was uneven by at least an inch, and nice and feathered on one side and blunt and short on the other. I did get a refund for the cut, but it was super frustrating to have to go elsewhere to get it fixed and have to get significantly more cut off than I wanted for a trim.

Mindy was amazing! Very nice and helped me transition to an A-Line. I will definitely be coming back hear to see her!

I used to love this salon, Bryson was my favorite stylist; he moved unfortunately. The last time I went in to get my hair cut and colored, I got stuck with some girl, who spent more time gossiping with another employee than actually paying attention to what I wanted her to do with my hair (extremely unprofessional). I would call and ask about getting my hair fixed, because she did a very poor, lazy and rushed job, but the customer service was so poor, I am not sure if I will ever go back in. The whole salon has a lazy, careless feel to it now. Its like I was charged a high end salon price, only to receive Great Clips quality service..

Bryson did a fantastic job cutting my hair! I was scared at first but he really turned out to be so amazing so i guess i was wrong! I highly recommend him. Was really able to show the true colors.

Hands down THE BEST salon in Salt Lake City!I have been a client at Malstroms for over 4 years and I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed by the services they provide. Each and every time I need to update my look they have gone above and beyond to create the exact look I want, take the time to make sure I have the tools/products to maintain the style on my own, and make sure I never leave their salon feeling anything less than gorgeous.

Devin Rahal did my hair after work today, and I absolutely love it. It was the first time Ive been to him, and the salon, but I called and asked for someone who was good with blonde, and they knew who to give me. Hali is AMAZING. she gave me a hand massage while waiting for the toner, she gives the best scalp massage, and i had a friend with me while getting a full blown make over, and she tinted her brows for her! such amazing service. i’ll definitely be coming in all the time. i love it
