My mom was transferred to Wills Eye ER in the middle of the night from a suburban hospital and they called me once to tell me her condition but then they transferred her to another hospital and never notified me. When i called for an update later that day, they said they had no record of her and then put me on eternal hold...twice! I had to call 3 different area hospitals in order to find her! Shes 83!

I work in healthcare and understand and expect an extended wait in any ED - especially during these recent months. After having been diagnosed with a stye several days prior, I experienced blurred/impaired vision and I feared infection began and was seeking antibiotic treatment. After 4 hours of wait, the nurse triage seemed more concerned about clearing the waiting room than my health.I was prepared to wait; however, the nurse told me boy you picked a day to come to the ER and its going to be at least another 4 hours to see a Dr.. In addition, the nurse provided clinical advise crust typically means the stye is releasing its fluid and healing. The nurse discounted the severity of my complaints and, to my regret, convinced me to leave the ED. No alternative care options were provided.Perhaps the infection did not warrant an ED visit; but, I was willing to wait and should not have been made to feel foolish for my concern. The nurse should be counseled - Male nurse, 9/21/21, 7:30p triage time. The picture attached shows a potential infection 8 hours after leaving the waiting room. I was able to secure a same day appointment at an ophthalmologist/plastics at Lankenau hospital.

Probably the longest wait Ive had in any emergency room. I came in with my right eye swollen, red and tearing up and I came in to get it checked out. They checked me in right away and they dilated my eyes after waiting for 20 minutes. However, after this was over, I waited 4 hours to see an actual doctor. My eye was absolutely swelling at this point and it was awful trying to wait while in pain. The doctor I had was lovely, but it took 2 hours to get discharged, as well. I got the antibiotics I needed, but I shouldnt have spent 6 hours here. If you have to come, be ready to spend the whole day here.

The doctor was lovely when we finally saw her but the wait times are ridiculous at this hospital!! I took my mother there at 6pm for a cornea infection. Her eye dr told her she had to go there as it was the only place for emergency treatment. Upon checking in, I overheard another patient asking the staff for an update as they had already been waiting for THREE hours. No reasonable explanation given. My elderly mother waited uncomfortably for FOUR hours before getting seen. But it didn’t end there! The wait continued in the back. We did not end up leaving the ER until 12:30AM. 6.5 hours and my mom still needs to go back to see the cornea specialist!!! Why is it an EYE EMERGENCY ROOM without a CORNEA SPECIALIST?Just go to a regular ER. The doctor was excellent but not worth the frustration. Steer clear.

I had a great experience at the emergency room. I was referred to Wills because of optic nerve swelling. I was super emotional and nervous and all of the nurses, doctors, and even the med students were so kind and gentle with me. They went out of their way to make me comfortable and give me a snack since I hadn’t eaten all day.Gabriella was a particularly thoughtful nurse. Thanks so much!

Waiting room was dirty, had empty soda bottles, dirt and tissues on the floor. Restroom was filthy. Receptionist and security staff are rude. Waited 6 hours and still wasnt seen. I was told there were 3 other people ahead of me. I couldnt wait any longer due to childcare issues, so I left despite needing evaluation for a detached retina. Another person in the waiting room had been there for 14 HOURS and was STILL there when I walked out. Ive been in healthcare for 16 years and this is completely unacceptable patient care. Leadership needs to expand or relocate the ER and staff it appropriately. They know they are the only ER for eye issues around here, so I dont understand why they arent doing more to meet the needs of the community.

For so many people to recommend this hospital to me when I had an eye Emergency, I was better off getting help from TikTok from one of the Doctors on there... I waited 3 hours to be seen. There was no place to sit (not totally their fault). But what made me so mad was when I gave them my information to check in, I gave my insurance cards along with my ID. The lady told me to hold onto to the insurance cards. But before I put them back in my wallet, I asked you do take BOTH of theses insurances, correct? The lady nodded her head Yes. After I was seen (which took hours), As I was waiting to be discharged another lady called me up to verify my insurance. She only mentioned one to verify and then I told her I have a secondary one as well. Then she LOUDLY says we dont take that insurance. You have a copay. Can you pay now? If I wouldve known that one of my insurances wasnt taken, I wouldve went to a regular ER or just found an eye Dr. that had emergency appointments and wouldve just paid the copay for an office visit and not an ER visit. But back to the long wait.. I was seen around 4:30pm, I got to the hospital around 2:20pm. The Doctors and nurses were nice even though they didnt really provide me with much support in regards to aftercare. They told me to buy OTC eye drops but never specified which ones. The Dr. walked me to the waiting area and said the nurse will call you back in 5 to 10 minuets with your discharge papers. That 5 to 10 minutes turned into one hour and 5 minutes. I kept track of time. I have never been anywhere that it takes the same amount of time to discharge you as it does to be seen.As someone who works in healthcare, I understand when its busy but the last thing I will do is put a time on anything knowing I cant live up to that time. And another thing I wouldnt do is treat someone knowing I dont take their insurance.Wills Eye, Do Better

I would have given negative stars if the option was available. The attitudes and lack of concern front the medical staff and receptionist are beyond disappointing. I was reluctant to go because of some of the reviews saying people had to wait awhile, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had half of a torn contact stuck in my eye for over a day and finally gave up trying to find it and remove it myself. When I got to the Wills Eye ER I was worried because there were at least a dozen people waiting and it was a Sunday. However, I was in and out in under an hour and after some effort we did find a small sliver of contact in my eye. The procedure was painless, the intake people were polite, the nurse was great, and the doctor was efficient. Intake was instant, I was called back 10 mins later, the triage and procedure probably took 15 minutes, then I waited 10 minutes for my discharge which probably took another 10 minutes. Very efficient, very kind.

I am not even going to address the fact that most of the staff works 9 to 5 in an emergency room setting. And I will not address that when most of the doctors and nurses leave for the day, everything comes to a standstill in the ER. I also will not address the fact that my kid gradually going blind over the course of the last three months is not considered an “emergency” in Will’s Eye emergency room. What I will address though is the fact that when my son is trying to speak to the doctor/nurse on call and she walks away while he is in mid-sentence and he is left sitting there in triage with the triage nurse, something is not right there. This is our 4th visit to this ER along with 3 visits to the Will’s Eye clinic and one visit to the Neuro-Op department in the last 3 months. This supposed “world renowned” EYE SPECIALIST is everything BUT that! For 3 months my son has come in with increasingly worse blurred vision and NO ONE CARES! THIS is not considered an EMERGENCY according to Will’s Eye! On this particular occasion we were there for 4 1/2 hours and had never been called back after the initial triage visit. Right before we left I asked where my son was on the list and I was told “I don’t know”. When I asked when will he be called back because numerous people had come and gone that had come in after us, I was told, “I don’t know”. When I said we had been there for 4 1/2 hours I was told yes it’s a long wait today. And no other information was given. This place is a joke. Numerous people were standing around waiting to be discharged. This is not acceptable. This is supposed to be a professional atmosphere and it is anything but that. If you think you’re going to get the best eyecare at this place, please realize that unless you’re coming in for near or far sighteness or dry eyes or an astigmatism, this place is clueless as to how to treat you. You have to come in with your own diagnosis and then they MIGHT know what to do from there.

A horrible and unhelpful experience. This made me question why I even pay for health insurance with this kind of medical care in place.I took myself to ER after being in pain all night with what feels like a lasso pulling on my optical nerve and swollen lymph nodes, I was told everything looks good and to get myself some Visine. I obviously need to see an ENT or have some tests done to see what is causing an infection that is affecting my eye and ability to function. My local glasses place could have told me the same thing. I came here for professional help and did not receive that.Luckily I care enough about myself to know I need to see another specialist and seek a second opinion and will be sharing my experience with everyone I know.

After having my eyes dilated, went back to reception area while the drops took effect. They brought me back in 20 minutes later, and Dr. Wu (sp?) did a very comprehensive and thorough exam of the affected eye, and identified and located a supernasal retinal tear.We were in and out in 2.5 hours. My visit to Wills Eye ER is among the worst medical visits Ive ever experienced and Ive had several. I arrived at 12:30PM and its now 10:43PM. My biggest complaint is that this hospital ER is not accessible for low vision or blind individuals despite being an EYE emergency room. I have migraines that affect my vision and I had new symptoms that were alarming. I was unable to see out of my left eye. I waited 6 hours alone for an MRI and I didnt receive a neurology consult that my resident requested. The only saving grace was my first nurse that helped me. My second nurse I saw twice and she was disinterested and unattentive. Poor, poor, poor. Shame, shame, shame. No accountability. I left without my results so I could get home. Wills Eye ER you need an audit to get improve your services. You are not caring for your patients. I respect other reviewers opinions, however, I strongly advise others to get their care elsewhere if possible.

I really don’t understand why people give this place such awful reviews. You have to wait a long time, but at least they solve the problem. They’re incredibly busy. If it’s not an emergency, don’t go here, it’s that simple. I heard nothing from complaints from the people around me while I was here regardless of the fact that they were treated kindly and respectfully and probably left with the exact answer they needed. I went to an emergency room before this who told me I was having ocular migraines, this place did the most thorough exams I had ever experienced and found out that I had MS and did everything they could to make sure I was comfortable. I just wish there were federal regulations that would mandate a minimum and maximum wait time. And mandate proper staffing or even rerouting due to longer wait time. During the triage by the nurse for my wife, my wife reported severe pain (9 or 10 on a scale of 1-10) and she cannot even open her eyes. She’s been writhing in pain in the waiting room. Not a single other person out in the waiting room appears to be in any apparent pain. But my wife is # 8 in the priority list. So apparently, pain and inability to see are not a factors in assigning priority. This is embarrassing for Wills Eye ER.

Horrible wait time, we and everyone in the waiting room has been here for 4 plus hours. The doctors and staff needs more support. This is complete BS.

My husband and I have been sitting in the er for over 2 1/2 hours. The waiting room is packed. A little girl has something stuck in her eye and no one took her pack. This places blows

I arrived at 6 p.m. And didnt leave until 3 a.m. It took long to get my testing people were not very attentive it took 3 hours to get a report for my MRI. I never expected to be in an ER for 8 hours and be treated the way that I was.

Definitely the worst experience I’m presently dealing with. I have been here 4 hours they don’t seem to know anything. They dilated my eyes and put in an IV that was NOT needed. Now saying it might be 8 more hours. They are so rude here. It’s upsetting
