I cannot say enough good things about Fox Chase, Dr. Smaldone and his staff. Through consultation, testing, preparation, surgery and recovery, I was kept well informed on all aspects of my surgery. The atmosphere was always positive, and my treatment could not have been better. Thank you Fox Chase!

This is my experience and why I give 5 stars. I had an adrenal adenoma the size of a great fruit on my right kidney. I talked to Dr Smaldone 3 weeks prior to my surgery, it was the most reassuring conversation. First Dr Smaldone review all of my medical records going back 20 years before our conversation. The day of our conversation he answered all of my questions, concerns and explained in detail about the surgery and what to expect post surgery, he even give me his personal cellphone number to call him if needed, which I did and he answered. March 18th was my surgery and everything went as expected. I was in room 317B, all the Nurses and aides were outstanding, friendly, exceedingly attentive and I wanted to thank them from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of my family for taking care of me, also may I add the prep Nurses before my surgery. Dr Smaldone what can I say, you are the best and I am grateful to have you operated on me, thank you very much. Continue your great work. FoxChase, thank you.🌄

Dr. Smaldone was always kind, open, reassuring and professional. He gave his mobile number to my wife and I, encouraged us to text him with any issues and responded quickly. Dr. Smaldone never seemed in a hurry, always taking time to answer all questions. I knew the options and what was happening. He is well supported by Jackie Culver. While no one wants to have to need surgery and I surely hope that I do not develop anything else. However if similar surgery is needed again for me, I would with 100% certainty, request Dr. Smaldone and Fox Chase.

I recently had my kidney removed at Fox Chase and I was amazed by the care that I received. Everything was great from my initial diagnosis appointments, pre-op, surgery, and post-op. Dr. Smaldone is personable, caring and responded promptly whenever I had a concern. His positive outlook and reassurance really helped during such a scary time of uncertainty that comes with receiving a cancer diagnosis. I am so grateful to Dr. Smaldone and his outstanding surgical skill in performing my surgery laparoscopically, helping to make my recovery really quite easy. His team is also really great, specifically nurse Jackie Culver and Cindy, who were very helpful and kind along the way. The nurses that cared for me during my hospital stay Kristen, Alysha, and Ashley took great care of me and were all very compassionate. I would highly recommend Fox Chase as I feel like they not only saved my life but they also kept me as comfortable as possible throughout the process. I cannot thank them enough and if you are considering them as an option to treat your cancer, going with Dr. Smaldone would be a great decision.

Taking the time to recognize Dr. Smaldone’s professionalism in addressing a very delicate health situation is the very least I can do for this fantastic doctor. He showed nothing but respect and care to not only myself, fighting cancer, but to my daughters who were very concerned. He never made one question seem dumb and kept all of us in the loop at all times. He not only took on my case with a positive outlook, but he took the time to reassess my diagnosis and staging of cancer from the previous hospital where I was diagnosed stage 3. In taking this time to reassess and get his own samples I was re-diagnosed stage 0. This was life changing in my case, saving my bladder completely and improving my overall quality of life. I will never be able to thank this man for all that he has done to save my life, and I continue to have a positive outlook on the future with Dr. Smaldone in my corner.-Richard, 55 years old

Dr. Smaldone, his nurse Kelly, and the rest of his medical team exceeded my expectations when working with my through all of my appointments and surgery. This review is long overdue. In 2018, I was diagnosed with a large mass (pheochromocytoma) on my left adrenal gland. Doctors in my area (NEPA) did not want to attempt the surgery. They were concerned, since it was a large mass, they may also have to take part of my diaphragm or stomach or?? Doctors said whether mass is cancer or not cancer Fox Chase is where you want to go to have the surgery. They were right!! I met Dr. Marc Smaldone (aka My Hero!) Dr. Smaldone was confident he could remove just the mass & the left adrenal and thats what he did! I was 67 and this was my first surgery and first stay in a hospital. I had no problems after surgery. Felt good the next day - no problem getting out of bed. Thank you Dr. Smaldone!! See you soon for 2 year check-up.I must say everyone at Fox Chase makes you feel comfortable. Oh, and the food is good, too.

When I received results of my psa test in May of last year, the number wasn’t too high. I thought if I cut back on activities before next test, results would be lower. They weren’t, andwhen MRI confirmed the prostate cancer, I decided to contact Dr. Mark Smaldone at Fox Chase. One of the best decisions I ever made.Dr Smaldone, his assistant, Kelly Bailey, and the rest of the staff, were patient and walked methrough every step. Since we had just moved to a new residence in June, I asked if surgery could be delayed until January of this year, 2020. Dr. Smaldone assured me everything would be okay. It’s two months after surgery, and everything is better than I expected. After the catheter was taken out a week following surgery, there was never an issue with incontinenceunless I tried to do too much while exercising but that problem went away in a week. My Psatest showed in zero to negligible level and with medication my sexual functioning is improvingmuch earlier than I expected.I will recommend Marc Smaldone and his staff to anyone who has prostate issues.

I believe I am alive and cancer-free today because of the skill, knowledge and caring compassion of Dr. Marc Smaldone. Not only does Dr. Smaldone offer patients the best medical treatments available, you will have a doctor who truly cares about you and will do everything in his power to help you. Prior to meeting Dr. Smaldone, I spent 6 weeks at another of Philadelphias best and most well known hospitals having every possible test done. The end result was that the source of my cancer couldnt be found. My wife wasn’t satisfied with that answer and made on appointment online for us to receive a second opinion at Fox Chase, where her aunt had been treated for cancer with great results. They quickly got us an appointment. When we met with Dr. Smaldone at the hospital we knew right away we were in caring hands. He was friendly, listened intently and offered suggestions. He made sure we left with his contact info for any further questions. Dr. Smaldone repeated the same tests I had done at the other hospital and thankfully was able to find the source of my cancer. Dr. Smaldone made it very clear from that moment on that he was there for me as my doctor and we were going to do everything to beat this. He never let me give up hope and always remained confident and positive. Dr. Smaldone made himself accessible to me whenever I had any issues. He stopped by my bedside everyday I was in the hospital and arranged for most of my tests and studies by communicating with my oncologist and all other doctors involved in my care. He stayed in contact with me when I was at home to make sure everything was going well. I couldn’t ask for better care than what I received from Dr. Marc Smaldone. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at thirty-eight, and went to Fox Chase for some more information and to discuss surgery options. Immediately after meeting Dr. Smaldone I knew that he was the person that I was going to trust to guide me through this very difficult time. The urologist that had diagnosed me was very respected in his field as is Dr. Smaldone, but after meeting Marc I knew exactly what it was that had been absent from all of my previous interactions with my first doctor. I felt that Dr. Smaldone actually cared about me. He is confidant, reassuring, informative, honest and I felt he understood the fear I was going through. He made himself available to me at all times and made it clear that my interactions with him did not always have to be about the physical, and technical parts of my experience. He wanted me to call him without hesitation if I felt depressed, anxious, or hopeless. This has been a long difficult process for me and my family that Dr, Smaldone has been unbelievably helpful through. I have been very fortunate to have had very skilled and kind people to help me, but I feel very confident now in my own ability to recognize excellence in people in the medical field quite easily by simply comparing them to Dr. Smaldone. My family and I can not thank him enough. In addition, the office staff is extremely kind, professional, and friendly. I also spent ten days in the hospital after the surgery Dr. Smaldone performed and the staff there was amazing. After being diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2016, I was advised by another cancer center to seek help at Fox Chase. My case was more complicated, as I had already been through a renal transplant in 2005 and was on immunosuppressive drugs. I called Fox Chase and was assigned to Dr. Marc Smaldone. Probably the luckiest day of my life. Dr. Smaldone is the most caring, knowledgeable, and thorough physician I have ever encountered (and Ive seem a lot of them). He insists you call him by his first name and wants to know your family so he can interact with them as well as you. He provides his personal cell phone number and actually calls you back when you call (usually within minutes). He realized I was in a lot of pain and did everything he could to help me. He recommended surgery to remove my bladder. Unfortunately, that was not to be as the cancer had spread to my pelvic area. He did not want to risk doing further damage during the surgery and backed off. He spoke with my family and gave them the decision, always treating then with respect and giving then the honest truth and what my chances were. He then worked together with Dr. Daniel Geynisman to get me on chemotherapy. We were also referred to the Temple University hospital transplant team to assist in managing my medications and keeping watch on my transplanted kidney. After chemotherapy was not working as hoped, the team decided to take me off of my immunosuppressive drugs, hoping that my own immune system would kick in and fight the cancer, knowing that my kidney could fail, but that was the option we had. Fortunately, this solution worked perfectly and I am still alive, my kidney still functioning well.I owe my life to Dr. Smaldone and the Fox Chase team. They worked together to get me through this incredibly difficult situation. Without him, I would not be writing this today. This goes to prove there is always hope, even in the most dire of circumstances. Dr. Smaldone and Dr. Geynisman never gave up on me and I am eternally grateful to both of them and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Over the past 11 years, I unfortunately developed 4 different cancers that were treated. 3 major operations, 2 chemo therapies and one radiation treatment. It was a few years ago that another cat scan showed that I had developed a 5th cancer on the bladder wall, due to an improper surgery by a local surgeon here in the Lehigh Valley. It was then that my wife, a retired RN, made a call to Fox Chase and the nurse navigator responded to her call in less than a few hours and navigated us to the proper MD for my situation which led me to Dr. Marc Smaldone. From the call to my first visit was only a matter of about 2 weeks.Immediately when we met with Dr. Smaldone it was like night and day talking to him compared to other DRs. He was so professional and yet caring to both of us, never just talking to just me the patient, but also to my wife knowing that we both were going through this together. What impressed me most about Dr. Smaldone and Fox Chase, was that after reviewing my history and what could be done about my condition, he said that he wanted to take my case before their committee to review my history and to plan the best course of treatment for me. This really impressed my as I have never had my case history discussed by a group of DRs for the best possible treatment. This was something I did not expect but really put my mind at ease.It eventually led to me having another surgery on my bladder and a few days stay at Fox Chase. Now with the hospital, as with most....the food was not the best but the care was excellent. Surgery went well as did the follow up treatment. Presently I am now being followed up by Dr. Smaldone for the past couple of years with cat scans and cystos twice a year to make sure nothing new is developing and so far so good. The best decision my wife ever made for me was to call Fox Chase which led me to Dr. Smaldone. There is no one else I would trust my care to than him. He not only talks to you the patient, but he makes sure he goes into the waiting room each time I have a cysto and tlaks to my wife as he also does for everyone of his patients. This you do NOT find with many other Doctors.Anyone that talks to me about cancer, I always recommend Fox Chase and how I have been treated by Dr. Smaldone. If you are having any problems with urology cancer.....Please make the call and get an appointment with Fox Chase and Dr. Smaldone, it will be the best decision you can make. After my surgery with him, he actually gave me his cell phone number to call him if there were problems. How many doctors do that today?? That was just one more reassuring comfort to me that if I did needed him....he was only a phone call or a text away.

I have been dealing with bladder cancer for the past four to five years, I have dealt with three different doctors & three different hospitals. When I was first diagnosed I was lucky I had a very small tumor in my bladder and the cancer was in its early stages and appeared to be very treatable . My tumor was removed and biopsied and found to be cancerous but would be treated with BCG treatments that are commonly used to fight this type of cancer and normally very effective, but after tree rounds of BCG it was found ineffective. My doctor believed because of my age about fourty two, fourty three I was to young for a bladder removal/replacement surgery and such a drastic change to my lifestyle as a younger man, I agreed. He recommended finding another alternative treatment and doctor, suggesting possible enrollment in a clinical trial and he helped me do so. So now Im on my second doctor and second hospital and within a few months Im in preliminary testing for a clinical trial that sounds very promising. After a few trips to the O.R. for biopsies I finally qualify for the trial, unfortunately after one month and my first dose the cancer cells were still evident in my bladder witch disqualified me for the remainder of the trial. At this point my second doctor strongly recommended a bladder removal/replacement surgery, this being the gold standard at this stage of my disease. Again because of my age I had to believe there was a better option out there for me, I also want to say I had great faith in both my first two doctors and appreciate all their help and hard work, I believe they did the best they could for me.This brings me to my third hospital (Fox Chase) and doctor, Marc C Smaldone who are currently treating my cancer. When I first met with Dr. Smaldone I was plesently surprised by his age, he is a young man about my age, actually a little younger and in my mind that is a big advantage who better to treat me than someone who can see things through my eyes. Dr. Smaldone is very confident in his abilities as a doctor he is extremely empathetic with his patients he is personable and easy to talk to I cant say enough he is an above and beyond kind of doctor, someone who personally takes a phone call to answer questions, or track love ones down in the hospital cafeteria to deliver news or stops in the waiting room to say hello these are all things he has done for me its the personal touch he puts on everything !I have been at Fox Chase for about a year and half now, I still have my bladder and Im living a normal life if Id hadnt come here I dont what my life would be. Its not only Marc I would recommend, its the entire office and staff from the women in reception to Debbie and Kelly in the back who are tasked with administering treatments and making people feel comfortable in a most awkward and vulnerable situation .Again I cant say enough about Dr.Smaldone and his staff Im grateful for the care I receive it has changed/ saved my life your the best !

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in February 2017. When my urologist told me the news, he had already contacted Fox Chase and had set up an appointment for me with Dr. Marc Smaldone. He told me that Dr. Smaldone was a very highly recommended surgeon. It was less than a week after my diagnosis that I met with Dr. Marc. The moment he stepped into the room, I felt a calmness and peace that I was with the right person to help me. He explained to us the reason for my bladder having to be removed. His care and concern for what I was going through was evident in his professional mannerism. Dr. Marc answered all of the questions from my family and I and never gave us the feeling that we were taking too much time or that our questions were not important. He explained that I was a great candidate for a neo-bladder. ( Something I had never heard of before. ) Dr. Marc said that the surgery would be longer than with an ostomy bag and a longer recovery time but the eventual outcome would be worth the wait. He also said he was going to have a patient who had the same surgery contact me to talk about what to expect. I was impressed! ( That patient called me the same day ) Before we left the room - Dr. Marc gave me his cell phone number and told me I could call him anytime with questions (That blew me away!) My family and I were going to get a second opinion but as we talked it over on the way home - we felt so comfortable and confident with Dr. Marc that we did not get a second opinion - and we don t regret it. Dr. Marc performed my surgery on June 8, 2017. Everything went very well. After 4 days in the hospital Dr. Marc agreed to discharge me as I was ready both mentally and physically to go home. Obviously with my intricate surgery, there were bound to be some hiccups along the recovery time. I did call Dr. Marc a number of times and he responded almost instantly every time. I actually texted him one time in the middle of the night and he called me right back. Dr. Marc is extremely concerned about each and every one of his patients....but he makes you feel like you are the only one. I have had one major surgery and 3 minor surgeries since my original surgery. Each time Dr. Marc assures me that its fixable and everything will be fine. He is right every time. Dr. Marc shows so much concern and passion for my health that I dont worry about a thing. I am so grateful to have Dr. Marc Smaldone as my doctor. I have told lots of people my story and Dr. Marc is a big part of it. Today I am cancer free with no restrictions to activity or diet and am enjoying life as I had before. Seems the review I just posted did not post properly. Here is the correct posting.I believe Dr Smaldone is among the best in his field clinically, surgically and personally. He performed my robotic radical prostatectomy one year ago. Following surgery, I had absolutely no pain. My situation was complicated by the fact that the cancer had spread. Dr. Smaldone skillfully remove all of the cancer cells in adjacent areas and one year down the road I remain cancer free. Dr. Smaldone explains complicated issues in easy to comprehend layman’s terms and takes the time to answer all questions. I have subsequently recommended Dr. Smaldone and Fox Chase to four people with cancer issues. All are equally satisfied.
