Ive been there for a days in March and the experience was not great. Everything seemed very dirty and there were actually mice in my room. But the worst thing about this were the mice in the heater because they were so loud I couldnt sleep at night. Rooms are small and potentially a struggle for two staying with large suitcases. Would be good to have had more washing areas to cope with higher demand hours. For staying on Manhattan Island itself, this is a very cost effective way of being near everything you need, but if you can afford to spend a few dollars more per night, then do.

If you’re on a budget and just need somewhere decent to sleep/shower for a weekend New York trip - I would highly recommend just staying here. It’s not a fancy hotel so don’t expect amenities of that sort. Rooms are small but that’s a given, since it’s the city. It’s surprisingly clean, well insulated (warm and cozy during the wintertime) and sharing the bathroom/ shower area on your floor will bring back memories of your college dorm room days. There were some plumbing issues on the bathroom on my floor but it wasn’t a big deal. There are additional rest rooms and showers in the downstairs gym/ pool area that you can use as well. Also, it’s very safe with security guards screening ppl at the front. This was perfect for us and we saved a lot of money that we used on eating good food instead! Thanks YMCA!

We didnt need to use the subway because many things were just around within a few minutes walking (Chrysler building, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park etc. The common aeras were clean and ok, even gym and swimming pool is offered but we didnt have time to use it in 2 days. I was a little nervous to stay here because the reviews were so mixed, but honestly, its not as bad as many of the reviews say! Its basically what I expected-- a no-frills hostel room above a YMCA. Yes, the staff was usually grumpy, and yes, the rooms are pretty basic, but if youre on a budget it really cant be beat. And hey, you can even use the pool. The room was small, but not as small as I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it even had a writing desk and mini-fridge. The room was spotless and they even changed my towels and sheets every day. I was glad Id booked a room with a sink, as the bathroom situation was a little weird. Not sure how it was on other floors, but on mine there were only two womens bathrooms for the whole floor. One only had two showers in it, and the other had two toilets, three open showers (without shower curtains), and one sort of shower closet behind a closet door. The two-shower bathroom was periodically locked, so I had to choose between baring it all in one of the curtain-less showers or hoping that no one peeped the window on the closet shower. I opted for the closet shower, although the setup was still weird enough that in order to actually get my towel, I had a quick brave moment of whipping open the closet door and hoping no one walked in while I exposed myself. So, would this be my top choice for staying in NYC? Oh no. But would I consider staying here again? Surprisingly....yes. And maybe next time Ill actually have time to use the sauna.Oh, one more thing--when I booked it, I was thinking it was right next to Grand Central station. Not the case. Its about a 10-minute walk.

I just returned from a three night stay -- two nights, a trip to Massachusetts, and then another night. I recommend it without hesitation. The place is spotlessly clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location, a couple of blocks from the United Nations (and some of the worlds most expensive residences), yet with plenty of modestly priced food options in an easy walk, cannot be matched anywhere. Why are there some negative reviews on the site? Trolls, I think. They almost scared me away. I am very glad they did not. [Obviously, everything is simple. If you want to stay at the Pierre, expect to pay accordingly.]

This place is good for wheelchairs with low budgets. The standard rooms are very small, but accessible with an usual manual wheelchair. The more expensive but more comfortable rooms should have more space for bigger wheelchairs(electrical ones). There are also accessible showers equipped with chairs for showering on the 4th floor. Two elevators gives you also a safe way to the rooms with a wheelchair. Accessible toilets are on each floor. In general also a nice accommodation for low budgets. Not overwhelming but a good cheap way for a stay in the central of manhattan.

The overall experience was pretty well. The room was clean and they were changing the towels every day. We went in November and the weather was very cold but in our room we had a heater which was working well. Sometimes it was even too hot in the room. There are 2 showers and restrooms in each floor and we never had any problem with it. Now the cons. The hotel staff seemed a little bit unorganized and not professional. The rooms don’t have safety boxes, so if you want to leave your documents, you can leave them at the administrative desk where they have a small safety box, but they won’t let you to take it and you will need to disturb the staff every time you want to put in and out your stuff. And the last one, they charge 2$ for a piece of luggage to look after it after your check out.

The place was perfect in location, and within walking distance from the E subway. Lots of bars, restaurants in surrounding area. Short walking distance to all the midtown sites and subway away from all the others. My husband and I appreciated the low cost stay which allowed us to do more in New York. Keep in mind, this is a hostel so its a place to lay your head to sleep, with very basic necessity, theres no glamour to the place and that was just fine with us. Its all about the CITY anyway. It gets the job done. The rooms are small, but if youre going out and about and mostly using it for sleeping then its fine! Its good 15-20 min walk from Times Square, so thats a good place to start. They provide you with towels for the showers and housekeeping comes to get trash and make beds. So if you plan on barely being in your room and need something cheap, this is great. As a lifelong New Yorker and member of The YMCA in NYC since 1983 I can say unequivocally that this is the best YMCA in NYC. They have a great 25 yard lap swimming pool and gym with everything youd need in a gym, including Spin classes. There are a slew of other classes including swim classes for beginners, yoga, and exercise dance classes. They have a sauna and steam room to use. It is centrally located in the heart of the City and near Grand Central Station. If you live on the East Side of Manhattan, this is the YMCA you should go to.

After a long flight over the Atlantic ocean,in a large group of 36 people, we arrived at the Vanderbilt YMCA. While we were waiting in the lobby we were constantly being asked by the conciarege to move due to little waiting area or sitting area. Dispite the YMCA claiming they are suited for large groups they lack the space for first arrivals. We then went up to are room which took a while but we were able to use the lift. When we opened are dorm room we were greeted by a room smaller than a parking space (for a country thats loves big cars and big homes/ buildings ,being greeted by a room not much bigger than 3m x 3m). We were sharing a 2 person bunk bedroom which on first look wasnt too bad not a place if I was booking it myself Id stay but I put up with it. And the room which I was staying in was actually one of the biggest in the group. The bunk beds were on wheel which we were OK with we just assumed that the bed was locked. I then climbed up to the top of the bunk bed ( up the frame as half the rooms didnt come with ladders) the bed started moving but it was only slight. I then whilst up there went to put my back against the wall when the bed started to move and I started to fall down the back it was only for my friend being down their that I didnt fall down the back possibly breaking my back or neck, and he was able to quickly push the bed against the wall. We then quickly went down to the lobby where they sent a guy from maitance up to see the bed. He was a very kind man but said there was nothing that he could do to stop the bed rolling around the room. He then called down to the lobby to see if there was another room available for us to stay in.We then moved to a smaller room but at least the bed wasnt moving. On the floor there were shared toliets and showers which Ive got to say in the 21st century it is not something that we see that often anymore. Although we did learn that on the 5th and 4th floor there were private toilets and showers that could be locked. The night. The mattresses were extremely rough and only one pillow was provided and when I went downstairs they said they couldnt give me anymore because the lady was about to finish. So I set in to my nights sleep of which I got probably 1 hour before I was awoken by the pipes above. And couldnt sleep the rest of the night. The following night I was able to get 3 extra pillows which did help me get to sleep but still had a rough night and only got around 4 hours.By the final night Id came a customed to the bed and actually managed to get a ok night sleep.( Although some point through out this stay I was bitten several times by fleas ,dont even know when). The actual gym facilities were very nice ,small but nice and I couldnt complain about them. Not sure if the facilities up the second lift were needed but they were nice non the less. The staff also were very nice. But sometimes seemed arrogant and occasionally rude.

I booked a private room in this hostel for my mother. Indeed, it was between Christmas and NYE and everything was full or above 1k per night. I had no other choice but booking a room there.First of, I emailed them multiple times to try to book an airport transfer for my mother but all the emails sent remain unanswered. She was put in a tiny nasty room where wifi signal was so poor that she had to get out of the room to another floor to get a decent signal to call me.The morning of her checkout, my boyfriend met her at the hostel (around 7am) to bring her out for breakfast then collect her belongings after breakfast and bring her to the airbnb I rented for our NY stay (she arrived 1 day before us hence the booking of a room there).Keep in mind that we booked a PRIVATE room. They met in the lobby, and she informed the woman at the counter that she was bringing my boyfriends suitcase to her PRIVATE room in order to avoid carrying the suitcase to the Starbucks. That woman (chubby black woman - I dont have her name), started yelling at my mother. She could have calmly informed her that she could not but no she shouted at my mother and verbally abused her). My mother is 60 years old and severely sick. Any stressful interaction has a negative impact on the spreading of her illness. How can an employee speak in this manner to any customer, but more importantly to someone way older than you ?I am disgusted by the way she was treated in this hostel.

I just arrived to this place and Im so disappointed. Its not mentioned anywhere on the site that there are NO RESTROOMS and no showers in the rooms! It took me several hours to look for a inexpensive one night stay in Manhattan, and there were many places much cheaper than this one that had amenities on the floor. I paid $30 extra for Vanderbilt because it looked like there were all amenities in the individual rooms according the description. The website didnt mention anywhere that there was no even a restroom in the room. And for well over $100 a night there should be! I need to use a bathroom several times a night and having to go somewhere else to use it is an extreme inconvenience. Its also very noisy here - there are people in the hallways and the doors are slamming all the time late at night. The room itself is just a little bit bigger than a locker, LOL. The matress is firm - probably the only good thing here. And so far the staff was nice. Well they make big money for very little.

Shared bathrooms with 4 showers and 2 toilets for a floor of 60 rooms, although I never had to wait Id worry in busy seasons. Hasnt seen a lick of paint in a while and not exactly modern standards but it provided a bed in the city for 3 nights at a rate far below nearby hotels, you get what you pay for. Room is small but did the job, I was in twin bunk beds so cant comment on the dorms. The most annoying thing was a requirement to wear swim caps when using the pool, which they sell for $10 and you have to be a member to stay which they helpfully charge you $10 a night you stay on top of advertised fees. For $100 a night you get a room in the middle of Manhattan, near the Grand Central Terminal & Bryant Park. The front desk personnel are often not so friendly. The rooms are clean, the shared bathrooms not so clean and the bed is a simple twin mattress on a metal/wood frame - no boxspring. The AC is adequate and the heat can be overly ambitious (the pipes bang.) Free WIFI.The CVS and the corner deli (Bread & Butter) are nearby. The YMCA workout facilities are available to be used by hotel guests - the equipment is top notch. If you stay here I recommend you bringing an inflatable pillow, ear plugs, wipes, possibly a light blanket and a sense of adventure. Most folks who use the YMCA hotel are younger, I’m 54. Being a single female I feel safe staying here. This was the view from my room - I could see the Chrysler Building.

Im a young guy in excellent health and after a night on the beds here I was walking like an 80 year old man, my back was wracked with pain. Not sure of this place is appreciably worse than others that are this cheap but if so the extra money is definitely worth it for a good nights sleep.

I spent 8 nights here and the comfort was pretty good. The common areas (bathroom, toilet) are cleaned daily, which does not prevent some dirt. Of course, you should not expect luxury when you pay a low price like YMCA Vanderbilt.

I stayed there on a school trip and there were human feces in the shared shower. I dont understand how this happened because the showers were in a separate room to the toilet and sink. Additionally, once we reported it we left for a few hours to go and get dinner and when we came back and checked they still hadnt cleaned it up. Also, there was gum on the headboard of my bunkbed which wasnt new because it was yellow. DISGUSTING!

I would definitely stay here again. My sister and i booked a room for one night while we were in the city seeing A broadway show. We were only staying in NY one night so this was perfect for what we needed. We had a place to drop off our bags, take a quick shower and come back and sleep after our show. The rooms are dorm room sized so if you want a lot out of a hotel this wouldnt be grest but if all you need is a comfy bed to sleep in this is perfect. Its close go grand central station and a 20 minute walk away from times square so i definitely loved how easy it was to get and from places while we were there

Oh come on....what do people expect for the price? this is great accomodation..clean sheets, towels and bedding everyday. Sure the room is small and basic, but the central location is excellent! I dont tend to spend too much time in my hotel room when in New York, I just want somewhere clean and pleasant to crash out. I take student parties of 40 + and havent had one negative comment after 6 visits.

Good community YMCA. I mostly use it for the gym, but the kids take swim lessons here as well. Its worth noting that there is child care available at popular work out times. Its a great deal for what you get.

I would be very careful staying here if I were you. Wear flip flops in the shower. Also, don’t leave ANYTHING in the dresser, even when you are staying there. Housekeeping will throw everything out. I went out for a day to find out that all of my receipts and notes were gone. The front desk said there was nothing they could do about it, but that I just shouldn’t keep anything I don’t want thrown out anywhere about the room. So, literally, you have to live out of your suitcase here.

I was not using the gym to workout, but I did attend for a continuing education credit for my personal training certification. The gym did appear neat and clean as well as having proper security at the front desk to direct me where I needed to be.

Checking into this hostel is an awful way to start a vacation staff was so rude, and didn’t try to accommodate us at all. We arrived at 2:30 check is what at 3. They made us wait until 3 without calling to see if any rooms were already cleaned and ready to go. We finally check in room is like a dorm room, clean. Shared bathroom is kinda dirty.. beds were very uncomfortable but not expecting much for price. We go to sleep after long day walking and are woken up multiple times throughout the night due to loud noises that sound as if pots and pans are being clanked together in your closet, later thinking it was the radiator. Overall for the price it wasn’t bad, and I wouldn’t be disappointed if the staff was friendly. Wouldn’t stay here again.

I stayed in this hostel for three weeks that are luckily finished today. The room was so tiny that me and my roommate didnt know where to put our luggage. My rooms door didnt work properly and sometimes the key stopped working for no reasons at all.We didnt have a mirror and there was only one bathroom for the whole third flour (there are approximately 30 rooms on each flour), which of course was always occupied. Also the kitchen was small, not fully equipped and overcrowded (one kitchen for 10 flours).Apparently housekeeping only consist in making the bed because I had the same dirty on the flour for three weeks. What made me angry the most is that, after I checked out, I asked the staff if I could leave my luggage for 10 minutes and they told me I had to pay a ticket. For 10 bloody minutes! The location is very convenient but it doesnt worth it.

This is a good place when you are just looking for a place to sleep in a good location for a reasonable price. However it still feels expensive but thats NYC I guess.Everything is clean and I felt comfortable. There are only a few bathrooms but I never had to wait so no complaints. The only thing I was really disappointed about were the checkin. The guy at the reception was really unfriendly. I felt uncomfortable to bother him with my check in.Overall I would say I would stay there again.

I have been a member for close to 15 years, and through the years not only has the Vanderbilt Y been my fitness safe haven, but I gained lifelong friends. Ive had memberships at MANY gyms, and in fact, I actually stopped my membership and realized that nothing compares to the Vanderbilt Y so I returned.

I had scheduled a group stay of 22 people to stay at this facility. We originated in Chicago, and planned to stay there. After a flight cancellation, we were no longer able to stay, and there was no room at all for them to work with us for a reimbursement, even a partial one. They were however, happy to reschedule us for a different day. It was very sketchy treatment and the manager, Tom, was quite rude when trying to reschedule. I am not saying that the value is bad, but I am saying that if anything goes awry, they are not to be trusted.

This place is more of a fitness center than an hostel. Hairdryers are at the lockers so you have to get down few floors after your shower to get your hair dry. Unfriendly staff. I got also charged $35 dollars extra so watch out your bill ! Common space are really raw and same as showers i.e. no shelves, no hangers. Also very noisy and cold if you don’t ask to turn the heater on.

Worst experience ever in an hotel! Full of teenagers making noise and closing doors hardly at any time. No one will do anything, even if you say something at the lobby. First time I felt I got stolen, paying 138usd for one night its a theft. Shared unhealthy restrooms and showers for that money? Definitely you are doing a big business Vanderbilt YMCA 👏👏👏

Cleaners begin as early as 830am. Showers moldy and smelled. no toilet paper in toilets for 2 days in a row. heating system in the building extremely old and periodically rattles so loudly it vibrates the walls (once every hour or so). Front desk security staff rude, WIFI patchy. forced to pay a 10$ daily fee for the pool/gym regardless of whether you use it. Drinking fountains broken. The common room/lounge for a place with hundreds of rooms/people is a single tiny room with about 7 seats in it. Kitchen is tiny and has almost nothing in it. the first night we were there our light constantly flickered on and off - maintenance staff said if someone was using a hairdryer in another room it could affect the lighting.... The location of this place is great but thats it. We paid around $150 USD a night for 2 bed room, not sure what the proper dorms are like. Ive been around the world and to countless hostels etc, and regardless of its location, somewhere with the YMCA brand and for that price you cant have that pathetic level of service and building maintenance.

I am very insulted at the way one of the employees treated me today. I asked him if we can get a form to fill out in order to sign in to this ymca because we attend a different ymca in New York. We go into the line and wait 30 minutes just to hear this extremely rude and racist employee tell us to “take out our ids if you are telling us the truth.” Mind you that we are both black teenagers who came in to lift weights for an hour and a half. This overweight slightly tall African American with short hair rudely tells us that we are clearly lying to him that we are members of a ymca as if we are these RANDOM HOODLUMS who just walk into this community center and sneak ourselves in. I felt racially , and emotionally attacked at the comment this extremely ignorant , rude and impatient man told us today. I could not put into words how emotionally irritated I was to have this unintelligent member of staff tell us that we would lie to him about being members BECAUSE HE SAW THAT WE WERE THESE BLACK WELL-GROOMED TEENAGERS who just want to exercise and go home. If this incident ever occurs again I will be speaking to the manager of this establishment to file a complaint of speaking to us as if we are these uneducated, bad mouth young men that society stereotypes black teenagers as. I am a college student attending NYU to become an actor who lives in a middle class household with other well educated and successful people and as a young inspired artist I need to address this issue because I did not bring myself this high in my life as a man who graduated with a 3.5 out of 4 gpa and as a young national honor student to be stereotyped in a place that people go to in order to feel safe AS A COMMUNITY. AND IF THIS WERE TO EVER CONTINUE I WILL BRING THIS UP WITH MY PARENTS AND WITH AN ATTORNEY. Thank you and have a beautiful night!

Just reviewing the gym. Its very well equipped. An entire big room with machines and a small one for free weights (that gets even smaller during peak season). Two swimming pools (water is barely warm). Locker/showers/sauna are pretty good and clean. Big cardio room, basketball court (dont know if standard size) and a big saloon for aerobics. Personnel at the front desk is a bit rough and indifferent; I knew only one PT with the attitude of giving some simple advice (yes I know one should pay for that: but SIMPLE advice, come on...). Security guards seems to be having a bad time there.

Very unfriendly and unprofessional staff members who dont even smile to the guests, rooms are too small to fit 2 people to the extent that one person has to sit on the bed so that the other can move.. the elevator is always crowded and you have to wait for over 5 mins to be able to find a spot and go up or down! The only good thing about this hostel was the great location, the more-or-less-working AC inside the rooms, and the clean rooms and bathrooms. The room itself was very small, did have a fridge and TV though (deluxe room, 2 beds). Negative was the very unfriendly staff at the front desk, the very hot hallways and bathrooms (they both did not have any AC which was deadly in August with 90-100F outside... you get out of the shower and youre instantly sweating again). Also, our cards to enter the room stopped working and we lost power one time (apparently the rooms outlets cant handle a hairdryer...). All that for around 120$ per night is pretty pricey... but its New York. Would probably not stay here again.
