Can’t wait for the bathhouse to be open again! I steam at least once a week. It makes my body feel amazing, my face glow, and I truly feel it cleanses my soul. There’s definitely a reason people have been doing this for centuries! Whenever I’m feeling a little extra, or if I bring my friends for their birthday we get the black Dead Sea mud. It smells and feels like nature, it’s amazing it’s not like those fruity chemical masks you get at target, it’s the real deal. I also always grab lunch when I go there! How i miss the borscht and potato perogies, I’m drooling thinking of them now. I usually bring my food up to their roof deck where there’s lots of other steamers to hang out with and get to know! I have met so many new friends at the schvitz! I really cannot wait to be back here sweating it out in the heat!

Very authentic experience. Not exactly what I was expecting. It does provide all necessary aspects of a spa, with a range of saunas, steam rooms, cold pool/showers, change room and restaurant. The facility was established in 1892, and you can tell; there is a charm to the dark stone sauna what looks to have not changed since 1892, but many other areas could use a bit of renovations. If you are more accustomed to moder/fancy spas, I would say dont go, but if you are looking for very old school, raw-essentials and you dont care about the look, then this place is for you. It does provide everything you need for a hot/cold water circuit or health cycle, but just very bare-bones, many locals go here. The price was a bit more than I think they should charge but okay. Towels, lockers, sandels(only mens), robes, and mens swim suits (none for women) are provided. Food is well priced. Unless I lived in the area, I dont think Id go out of my way to go, but it was a neat experience.

I wont go here again. It is not a convenient location. It is on far end 1st ave. The space itself is dingy, run down, old, cramped and very crowded with minimals. There is no hot tub. Lots people go I think its because its affordable than other spacious, bright and clean Korean spas. The heat here is good. Lots of women bring their own products to use. I wont recommend wasting money for a body treatment here. The Russian lady barely worked. She just put on some products and wash it off. There is a long line of waiting and delay for service. Then lots of interruptions of her stepping away of whatever excuses. She is very unprofessional.

At first glance you might rate this Russian bath a 0-1 star because of its appearance when you first walk in. First of, it looks like your local Bodega store with a front desk to the right and a food/juice station to the left with chairs to seat. Second, the locker room look out of date and dirty and third once you go down to the basement the floor is pure concrete, the lights are dimmed, and there is an empty pool to the side. Then I was greeted by a heavy Russian accent man and he suggested that me and my wife go into the steam room before the Russian bath. The steam room was spacious enough for a couple of couples to sit or stand. Once a table was available I was called in. The room was dark with a table that seemed like if I was about to get butchered. However, everything changed once the nice heavy accent man began to bathe me. This bath has to be the best ever body wash I have ever received in my life hands down. I will have to admit at first I was a little skeptical laying in a dark room naked, but he was so professional I did not even care. He even sat me down and washed my hair and face. To be honest, it felt like I was getting a massage and a bath at the same time. After the bath my entire perspective of this place change. I give this place a 5 stars because the service and bath were phenomenal.

Im a seventeen year old girl, my older sister from New York brought my mother and I to the bath house. This place is like another world where I completely lost track of time. While my initial reaction was something close to panic when I felt as though I was being cooked alive, I soon found myself relaxed among the other guests. The extreme conditions tend to put people into a natural high, and the atmosphere becomes one of community and zen. People were nothing but kind to me, and I observed zero perversion of any kind.I noticed that one comment here complained of sexual assault on someone receiving a service. Obviously, I was not there, so I cant argue against that; however, I will say that the platza (sorry for the misspell) is performed over the entire body. My sister received one, and when the man adjusted her swimsuit to hit more of her body with the leaf bundle, it didnt seem sexual in any way. If you think this might make you uncomfortable, maybe wait to purchase one of these treatments until you see it performed on someone else.If you are considering visiting the bath house, I would highly suggest reading the negative and positive comments to help you decide if you would enjoy this place. Again, I found it to be amazingly relaxing, but its an experience with little luxury. If you would like to try the bath house but you arrive and find yourself craving a less-intense experience, try the aroma therapy room, its lovely. ^-^

The brothers Boris and David that own the place are reportedly feuding - so memberships and ticket packages (Boris or David) are good only alternate weeks. Kinda of a funky place - been going there 30 years. After 125 years, its definitely got character. Best to go early in the morning - it gets crowded weekends. The ice cold dunking pool is an experience of its own. Do not miss the Russian Room - a wet towel on the head and buckets of cold water on the head make survival possible. For the full experience, get a platza. The fresh squeezed juices are recommended. The down side: its 125 years old.

Yes, it’s kind of underbellyish. Yes, it’s got a grittiness to it. But this is exactly what I was looking for: super hot Russian bath, super cold plunge pool, friendly guests, during a snowstorm. The rough edges are a feature, not a bug. It’s almost exactly the same as 30 years ago when I was here last.A little side dish of bros in the steam room agreeing how good winning is, but you can always go back to the Russian room, where it’s too hot to chit chat, and everyone focuses on survival.

Great location, not a frilly Bahamas spa experience type of place, this is closer to a Russian bathhouse where mafia members discuss oil futures. As such I recommend Boris over David weeks as they cut you better/shadier deals if you want bulk pricing. The oak leaf treatment is worth doing at least once and I think the best use of time is alternating between the cold plunge and the super hot room. Great place, and tell Boris I sent you!

I was warned that this is not a place for romance. I expected horror and thats what I got. This place is in really bad need of restoration and renovation. I felt like I could not relax. The aromatherapy steam room smelled like old sweaty socks. The steam room across the hall was super hot. I thought that was AMAZING but I couldnt soak it all in mentally in tranquilty. The ceilings and floors are old and worn. The tiles are falling off the walls. I was there for 20 minutes and left. There was no female therapist available and even if there was one available I dont think Id lay in those dark scary tin rooms to receive one.

By far, one of my most favorite places in all of NYC. Its on the pricey side for a day pass, but worth every penny and every ounce of sweat that youll expend enjoying the various steam baths and saunas, and made all the better by the incredible community that has been built over the years. Having a bathhouse more than 100 years old will do that, I guess. The people were so awesome, and just as willing to chat with us (newcomers) as they were willing to gruffly and warmly greet old friends of many years. The gossip in that place is flying like tomatoes in a food fight; big and juicy and thrown with abandon.

A very unique experience with many saunas to explore in the basement. Hours are divided by men-only, women-only, and mixed (coed) hours, so be sure to check their schedule. While clothing is optional, shorts are required from both genders during mixed hours. On first floor, you can grab some snacks. In the upper levels, there are additional massage rooms and rooftop, where smoking is unfortunately allowed. You will come out refreshed and sleep well at night.

Unfortunately yesterday was my first experience, as a first timer I dont believe I got the attention needed. I walked in, waited for the woman at the register to greet me but she was heavy in conversation. Literally ignored me and slammed what looked like a guarded box and I asked what it was for. She told me to place my wallet in and sent me on my way. I mentioned it was my first time there and said we hold on to your wallet and give you a key for the locker room. Confused at what this place might offer I walked reluctantly towards the back. I asked where the locker room was because she didnt have enough empathy to share that information with me. I was practically bullied into a service I didnt know they offered, and went forward with that. I got a salt scrub, and hung around in the saunas for a moment. All of which is extremely outdated and oddly enough people are just sitting around. As Im ready to depart I give them back my locker room key...they oddly and forwardly ask if Id like to leave a tip, then the total was a surprise because the oh so very busy woman at the counter last night didnt mention any entrance fee, that of course I have no qualms about because I get it, but the only pricing I saw was the salt scrub so I paid over $100 for 40 min of a bad first time experience. Although the gentleman who offered the salt scrub was aggressive in his delivery the scrub wasnt half bad. Otherwise dont waste your time here.

Update: changed back to 1 star after experiencing a 10 times better bathhouse experience at a Brooklyn locationI gave this place 2 stars because the saunas and ice bath were enjoyable experiences (besides the moldy steam room.) However the rest of the place made sure I will not be coming back. I understand that the appeal of the place is how it is no-frills and old school, but I still found the place to be rundown, crowded, and unorganized. The worst part was that the receptionist will not let you pay without trying 5 times to convince you to pay $300 for a membership when nothing about the place made me want to go back. They also charged me for my friends food we ordered together, which would be fine, but I found out later they charged him anyway. Of course no one answers the phone when I try to resolve this.

Original nyc bathhouse. Little to no frills. Feels like you could actually be in some random locale in Russia but probably much more expensive then russia. The russian room is the hottest. Good to have a towel to put down behind your back or under your thighs in the Russian room as to not get burnt by the seats. Dont hesitate to fill up a bucket of water at the well in the russian room and then dump it over your head. Fantastic place! The staff are friendly, and though the facilities arent luxurious or the cleanest, thats part of the experience! You go not expecting to go to a regular spa, but to go to a Russian/Soviet utilitarian Banya. If you keep that in mind and go, then youll have a great time! The Russian bath is excellent, especially with the cold water you can splash on, and the Turkish sauna, while extremely hot, is also very refreshing! I recommend however you either come very hydrated or bring a water bottle with you, as you sweat a TON and can become dizzy if not properly hydrated. They serve food and refreshments, so if you get hungry you can go upstairs and get some grub, then go back down.Overall, this is a great place, and if you go knowing what youre in for, youll love it.

No one seems to care about the aesthetics of this place and the cleanliness is at a bare minimum. There is a faint-ish moldy smell. (I think its a little strange how some reviews seem to equate the dinginess of this place to authenticity. It seems somewhat of an insult to Russian culture, to be honest.)Full-disclosure: I used to be a regular at South-Western Bathhouse in Toronto and that place is phenomenal. It was a proper Russian banya where the owners put care into every single detail (the owner even re-tiled the Turkish sauna when he noticed the previous tiles were sticking out to much and bothering his patrons). At coed hours, a healthy ratio of men and women lounge in the sauna rooms and on benches. Most men use facility-provided shorts, towels, and sandals, while women commonly wear bikinis (probably their own) a minority go topless or use the facility provided robe. I recommend giving the hottest Russian sauna a try. The towels Ive used were all clean, and the customer service has always been satisfactory. Men-only hours were more crowded. I did not opt for the platza, but maybe one day. Theres some great history there and if youre lucky enough to go on Saturday, Kevin, another regular will give you the inside history. Listen. Its worth hearing, even if it isnt all true. Sharon, was another vet, offered good advice. If you use a Groupon, make sure you know Who the owner is for the week you purchased, as there are 2! Ladies, there is absolutely nothing sexy about this place, and attendance is heavily dominated by older men and many of eastern European descent, but I dig!!! The Borscht soup is also worth it! I will definetly be returning and making this a place where I come to chill.

Dirty bath house with limited amenities. Plus side the food was decent.

This is one of the most authentic experiences you can have in New York. Before there was indoor plumbing, when many New Yorkers were living in dirty tenements, there were bath houses throughout the city where people went to refresh themselves. The Peninsula it is not, but this vestige is antiseptically clean (enough). The Russian Radiant Heat room is the crown jewel of the Schvitz (an endearing nickname for the place). The room is literally an oven with blistering dry heat and buckets of cold water throughout. Sweat your face off till you cant take it anymore, then pour one of those buckets over you. Its an amazing sensory experience. Throw in one of their many treatment options (I recommend a platza) and a beer on the roof, and youre really in business.

It is not at all luxurious, but I love it! :) The hot Russian room with the ice cold water buckets is the best.

This place is like a dungeon. The smell is disgusting in the sauna area and also in the lobby. It also seemed not very clean to me. People go to into the bath without showering and all the sauna seats were soaking wet. 1 Star for the variety of the saunas.
