I met Dr. Mamelak when getting a second opinion regarding a small benign brain tumor on my frontal lobe. The first time I went in, he was engaged, thorough, and seemed deeply involved in my case. I thought, oh I finally found my doctor! After another MRI, I went back to see him, and when he walked into the room, it was as if I had never been there before. I would never assume that I am important enough to remember on sight, but even when he looked at my information, he acted as if he never spoke to me before, and he denied all of the things he had told me in our last meeting. It then occurred to me that the first time we met, he had medical students with him. Maybe he was trying to impress them? In the end, I found someone else who I could trust. Very disappointing!

As a Respiratory Therapist, EMT and co-director of an Emergency Medical Service (now retired), I worked with hundreds of physicians. In my entire medical career, I worked with only a handful of them who showed the comprehensive knowledge, down-to-earth and humble manner and singular competence of Dr. Adam Mamelak. I was fortunate to have him as my neurosurgeon 5 years ago and, during numerous follow-up visits and annual MRIs, I have always found him to live up to those accolades. In addition, and very importantly, he was kind, compassionate and empathetic toward my adult daughter, who was quite upset by my original diagnosis and surgery. Without fail, Dr. Mamelak asks about her every time I see him. In fact, she is such a fan, she is recommending him to a friend as Im writing this. We all have our bad days. If Dr. Mamelak has them, I have yet to witness one. In my opinion, he deserves 10 stars.

Dr. Mamelak was my mothers brain surgeon. He removed a pituitary tumor back on October 2018. It was her 4th brain surgery and my family was very nervous. He & his AMAZING team met with all of us ahead of time and answered all of our questions. I wouldnt dare suggest anyone else.

Let me begin this review by saying tha I am a recently retired nurse of 35 years. When I had a history of surgery at Cedars 10 years ago and was very pleased with the experience AND outcome so; it was agreed I would go there for my challenging and complex situation. Most unfortunately, the fellow physician my specialist knew, had retired. So, by the time my referral was assigned to Dr Mamalek, we were notified of the time for my Consultation, it was another two weeks. The vision loss and daily headaches had been going on for over SIX MONTHS.We drove over 3 hours in traffic, allowing time for delays; being sure we were not late. We waited 20 minutes PAST our appointment time. And, we were finally roomed; at which time the RN went over my general medical history, ALLERGY info, etc,. Dr Mamalek entered the room; tapping his watch saying, I need to get back to the OR.” No greeting. No introduction. Being in the medical profession, I’m well aware emergent cases come up. SO, I dismissed his tardiness & obvious distraction of being in the middle of another case. He wanted to repeat all the studies I had done with MY team of local professionals. Did that; a 14 hour day and returned the following week,to see the doctor for their results.AGAIN, Dr Malamek enters the room... tapping his watch. “I need to get back to the OR.” SERIOUSLY???I will admit, I was emotionally grateful to hear that the lesion is harmless; with no likelihood that it will ever be, in my future.HOWEVER, When I inquired about the daily headaches AND vision loss in my left eye and, the results that indicate my optic nerve is compromised; he responded by saying, “I think you had a bad work up.” He admitted “there are so many records here, can’t seem to see that now. But, I would say “you had a bad work up, unfortunately.” I could only sit there in DISBELIEF!To speak that way of a fellow professional, a colleague, a highly reputable physician when in reality; it was Dr Mamalek at fault, OVERLOOKING that specific specialist’s report, was unprofessional & short sighted; on his part!I DID INDEED see another neurosurgeon AND a neuro- ophthalmologist. I do have nerve damage & vision loss. So, I hope this will empower just ONE patient. NEVER be hesitant to get another opinion! You will have NOTHING TO LOSE. But, you have EVERYTHING to gain!
