You must be a male, or higher up in management if you are a female, or have a degree if you are a female in order to go to a disaster relief out side of Pennsylvania . The males do not have to be in management, or have a degree in anything. I only know that to be true with the Lancaster Red Cross.

I have given blood ever since I was in my mid-20s. First at LGH and now with Red Cross, because the organization comes to my place of employment for blood drives. The last three times I have given blood, the attendants taking my information and my initial anemia blood test have been downright nasty, making snide remarks, rushing me through the process and sighing when the answers to their questions did not please them (ex. I couldnt IMMEDIATELY remember the name of a medication I was taking). If I had been a first-time blood donor, I would not have gone back a second time. The saving grace has been that the phlebotomists, who have actually drawn the blood, have been courteous, friendly and have gone out of their ways to make me and other donors comfortable. This past experience almost had me walking out the door before I donated but the smile of the guy who was about to draw my blood made me remember why I was there. He was gentle, reassuring and a bit humorous.I believe some retraining is in order or new donors will be driven away!!
