After delivering my first 2 babies at Evergreen Hospital, I was looking for something different with my 3rd baby and opted for the Puget Sound Birth Center. I had a wonderful experience, it really exceeded my expectations. My baby decided to stay until 41 weeks + 5 days and I know I would have faced a lot of pressure at the hospital to schedule an induction, however at the birth center I faced no such pressure and was able to use castor oil to get labor started in a less intrusive way and have the water birth as I was hoping for. When he was born, baby needed a few puffs of oxygen to start breathing and although it was a very scary moment as parents, my midwives Ella and Heather took care of it very calmly and professionally, we knew we were in good hands!

I cannot speak more highly of this team. The care was excellent, patient-oriented, careful, competent. The facilities were comfortable and practical. The one sad point in all of this is how utterly the near-by hospital failed in comparison to this team. While Ali, Kaja and Krys were medically prepared and medically competent they did not do what multiple hospital care workers did, which was to outright hyper-medicalize the pregnancy and birth process. They listened to, responded to and cared for the person in front of them above and beyond just treating them as values and risks. Without fail, we found our team at the midwifery was MORE up-to-date on appropriate care practices than the doctors we encountered in local hospitals. Whereas the hospital bullied and ignored, the midwives empowered my partner and I to decide about care, while ensuring a medically safe environment and the health of the growing baby.I am a trained physician and I would recommend this team over hospital-care every day of the week. Whereas the hospital care was arrogant, and borderline abusive, the Puget Sound Midwives were an absolute godsend. They made the pregnancy process reasonable, enjoyable and safe, then guided us conscientiously through an overnight birth process with 3 folks always there to try positions and methods to facilitate and manage, and the post-birth care was also exceptional. They checked in, dropped by, taught us a few things with patience and handled his first wellness and medical checks, too.Last but not least. Not ONLY are they excellent at their calling - you can tell that the people in the team care. They love what they do and truly care for the people and babies they guide and help.If at all possible - give yourself the gift of going through the pregnancy and birth process with this team. They are the care difference between you, your partner and your baby enjoying a beautiful life-giving experience, as opposed to suffering a frustrating medical event. We couldnt be more grateful to them.

I switched to PSBC after starting my care at Evergreen in Monroe. My little guy was stubborn (like his parents) and wanted to come in his own time. We tried all tried and true methods to get labor going with Melanie…and when it did, my body was much too exhausted to continue and needed transferring. Despite this, my experience with the Lake Washington midwives was amazing. The transfer to Evergreen was a breeze…and the postpartum care was exactly what any new mom or old would need. I wish I would have been able to deliver there, but my guy had other plans ❤️

I absolutely love this birth center. I birthed my son here in 2017. The center schedules each prenatal visit for longer than a hospital would to allow for more conversation and question asking. This really allowed for a more intimate bond and trust to be built prior to labor. They were very personable and supportive. During labor they were very empowering and patient. They never made me feel like I needed to hurry or something was wrong. They allowed my body to do the work and when I hit a wall they used very positive talk to help me feel capable. The room itself was spacious which made it easy for myself to walk around. It never felt crowded with me, midwives, my partner and my mom. I thoroughly enjoyed the large jacuzzi tub while laboring. I’m now pregnant with baby number two and had no doubts about going back to the birth center. The prenatal care has been just as amazing as the first pregnancy and all staff have been just as personable. I also really like the location because the hospital is a stones throw away so for anyone concerned about safety or the possibility of needing emergency services you’re not far from the hospital.

The BEST experience! I started seeing Jessica and Heather in my second trimester (2017). I loved not feeling rushed at my appointments and I felt so comfortable with them. Jessica and student Suri helped me during delivery. I had the urge to push and I just couldn’t hold back. I ended up pushing at 9cm while being held open as I pushed. Didn’t hurt extra and it all worked out! Post care was great!

After a bad experience at another midwifery, we transferred to Puget Sound/Eastside Midwives at 30 weeks pregnant and had such a great experience with Ella and Heather. I was concerned with transferring so late but they were very quick to get caught up my history and immediately provided a much better experience than my prior midwife. I really appreciated the thorough communication at all my appointments and the extra effort they make to get to know you.And for the birth, Ella delivered our beautiful 9 lb baby at our home and she was absolutely incredible. We had some minor complications and Ella was so quick to keep me calm and talk through options so clearly which made me feel so incredibly safe. This was my first birth, but I will 100% be back for the next baby!

10/10 would totally recommend! My midwives were amazing. I had Heather & Ella, I also had a student Midwife named Amanda. I couldnt ask for a better team, so supportive! I went from being terrified to birth (this was my 2nd child, traumatic 1st birth) to actually being excited & so ready for it all! It was an AMAZING experience overall. I would definitely have my next child here & would recommend to anyone. I loved my entire experience. Thank you Puget Sound Midwives for giving me such an incredible experience. I couldnt have wanted it any other way 🥰❣

I would be very cautious going here, my wife was not fully dilated but they told her that she was and they told her to push, and after like 4 hours of hard work of pushing they said oh actually youre not even fully dilated, lets wait a few more hours till we can start pushing again but now she ran out of a lot of energy and had a difficult time here. this was very unprofessional and we wanted some of the more experience midwives to be with us not someone who is not very knowledgeable.I appreciate the effort and the care but I definitely think there could be improvement.

Our experience with PSMBC was simply extraordinary, and I wish that all birthing people could have this level of care. The Lake Washington team of midwives cared for us and attended our home birth (first child). We always felt deeply seen and cared for throughout our prenatal, labor, birth, and postnatal contact. Logistics and billing happened perfectly seamlessly, even with insurance. All the midwives are deeply passionate about their work, and go above and beyond in all respects. At every step of the way, the midwives explained everything clearly and with great love, and I knew that everything was going to be okay, even when it got hard, or was not what I hoped. They are simply the best!

Jessica, Heather and all the students/staff are incredible! We started prenatal care there right away and we’re instantly welcomed with open arms. The midwifery model of care is truly something special. Each apt is at least 30 minutes long and they take time to know you and your partner, your fears and hopes for parenthood and truly listen. We never felt rushed during an apt and felt very comfortable and at ease throughout the whole process.During labor you are in a calm, safe, peaceful environment where you aren’t hooked up to a ton of machines with random people coming in. The midwife who you have gotten to know over the past 9 months is right there with you to welcome your baby into the world.I would highly recommend PSBC to anyone looking for a better birth experience, they are the best!

From the first appointment to the last postpartum and infant wellness check we have felt 100% supported and cared about sincerely. The facility is beautiful and comfortable. The interns are kind and energetic in their pursuit on this path. The administrative and secretary staff is personable and always makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door. And the Midwives are each more supportive, compassionate and in love with what they do we knew right away we where in the right hands to have our first child. Everything about our experience with PGMW was phenomenal. Only problem now is that finding a family practitioner to match the care and considerations weve experienced has been difficult.

Knowing that I wanted to have an out-of-hospital birth, my husband and I toured many birth centers in the area. We chose Puget Sound birth center because we felt their approach aligned with our vision for our first birth as well as their proximity and collaboration with Evergreen in the instance of medical transfer. It turns out that was fortuitous. At my 36 week appointment we discovered a medical complication that required me to go to the hospital. I found out that I would be induced in 1 week. Despite having to deliver at the hospital, the Eastside midwives continued to support me and provide excellent care. They helped me with various techniques to ready my body for being induced and delivering early. They also continue to provide my postpartum care. They work extremely hard. You can tell this is a true labor of love for the Eastside midwife team. I cannot recommend them enough!

I had my baby here on October 13th, and loved every moment of my 47 hour labor. The Midwives were wonderful and considerate of everything I wanted my birth to be like. They made a wonderful and informed suggestion of breaking my water for me, because they didnt want me to be completely exhausted for when hard labor came. But they left the final decision up to me. 2 hours later my daughter was in my arms. They are absolutely incredible and I will be returning to them for my next baby!

I went middle of the road here because we went with another birth center. However I was a bothered by the fact that they charge a midwife fee, basically a catch all fee insurance doesnt cover. We interviewed a lot of birth centers and no one else had heard of such a thing. It kind of bothered me because it felt prohibitive (it was pretty high to have someone pay in cash) and arbitrary.

I love the midwives and staff at Puget Sound Birth Center. My first baby was born at the birthing center, my second was a home birth. Valerie and Ali, as well as the wonderful student midwives, have always given excellent care and support to me, my husband, and our babies. You will never feel rushed through an appointment. The midwives truly support your wishes as a mother and respect the birthing process. If I became pregnant again I would definitely return to the Puget Sound Birth Center! I had two child births with an assistance of midwifes from the Pudget Sound Midwifes and Birth Center (Lake Washington Midwifes team). My second child was born at home in 2013 and my third baby was born at the Center in 2016.Both me and my husband agree that those experiences were beautiful and so much peaceful compare to hospital birth (for the first child). During both prenatal care and child birth I feel that midwifes truly care of me and my family. They are so welcoming and helpful, and give you as many space as you need too. Im very grateful to all the team! You can get all necessary and recommended tests/procedures during prenatal care and after birth care. The team will help you to make an informative decision, and the last word is always yours (and nobody push on you, you always feel comfortable and understood). The Center location is also great - next to the Greenlake Hospital - so it is great compromise to have a wonderful homelike birth and feel safe (it was especially important for my husband). The Center has a family/kids room for older kids to play.I recommend those midwifes for everyone who is looking for natural childbirth experience!

I cannot say enough amazingly awesome things about PSBC. We had our first child there in 2003 and our second in 2006. Heather and Valerie were our magnificent duo the first time around, Aly and Valerie were on the case for the second. Everything from the rooms to the general atmosphere was welcoming, calming - and your midwives are INCREDIBLY excited and seem generally honored to be there for YOU - even though they have done this thousands of times before. You feel so special and loved - it is truly amazing.A beautiful experience from start to finish - and, I swear, I have considered more children JUST to be under their care, again - I miss them!! :)

No new parent wants their newborn to have issues breathing or to have to be rushed to the NICU in an ambulance, especially not a mama striving to give birth naturally. But if this happens to you, as it did us, you DO want to have Puget Sound Birth Center & the Eastside Midwives beside and behind you. Their professionalism and quick thinking saved our little boys life.We toured 2 other birth centers before deciding on PSBC, in part because of its proximity to Evergreen and I will forever be grateful that we did. We had all hands on deck for a normal turned urgent birth. A midwife accompanied my husband in the ambulance, 2 stayed with me. In that dark time we were never alone. Even after transferring, not 1 but 2 midwives stayed with us to ensure I was able to have skin to skin contact and get breastfeeding/pumping started. When my baby was refused milk they ensured that at the very least colostrum was rubbed on his lips so he could taste and smell me. Chart notes from my prenatal visits and stats from the entire labor were provided to Evergreen before I even arrived. These details, this support, is what makes PSBC so special. The prenatal appointments were nice and long (making birth less stressful because you are accustomed to the surroundings and every staff member). They included my husband and mother in the birth itself. They provided an open forum for discussion when I had hesitations about some of their suggestions. They made me feel in control of my own experience. The postnatal home visit was a lifesaver. Their online portal is efficient and helpful. Their billing process is clear and prompt. Their admin staff is exceptionally efficient and personable.***But mostly importantly in the worst case scenario they were professional and experienced, calm and confident and the absolute best woMEN for the job.***Come for the jacuzzi tub, stay for the friendships.

Ill keep this concise because, honestly, when it comes to an amazing birth story its hard not to write volumes. It was late in my pregnancy with my second child and I wanted a different experience than the standard hospital birth of my first child. A midwife in Seattle recommended Val and Lake Washington Midwives. They are the perfect combination of medical and holistic. The midwives and their students are intelligent and caring. They never blow off a question or concern, they never sugar coat, but they never alarm, either. The physical location of the Puget Sound Birth Center is great, too.Basically, the appointments were relaxed and informative. They focus on what you want done. They use their knowledge to guide but never bully.I had the water birth I wanted, no tearing, no episiotomy. My husband started taking a video right after my son was put on my chest and he captured me crying with joy and saying Why was it so easy?.I really strongly urge you to come to them if youre considering a birth with a midwife at home or in a birthing center (they do both). Being treated like an intelligent and capable person instead of like an obstacle is amazingly helpful toward having an intervention-free birth. During the pushing Val gave me feedback on how much to push and what to do to get the baby out with as little damage to me as possible. I really cant say enough about what a great experience my family had there. I wish every couple could have a similarly wonderful experience!Oh yeah, I should also mention that the birthing center is 3 minutes from Evergreen Hospital and they can stay with you at Evergreen if you need to be transferred for any reason.Good luck!

I wish that every woman would be able to experience their journey to childbirth and after like I experienced mine at PSBC with Heather and Jessica of Eastside Midwives. The care and support I received at PSBC was invaluable. My husband and I just left a postpartum visit with Jessica and Amanda and agreed that there isn’t a single other place we could go that would make us feel as positive, safe, and secure about a pretty significant period in our lives. You couldn’t leave your well-intentioned grandma’s house and feel better. I couldn’t have felt more empowered, valued, and respected by my midwives and the students at PSBC. Heather and Amanda were so uplifting and encouraging during my birth and I couldn’t be more grateful to them. Both Heather and Jessica provided excellent prenatal care; they were great listeners, offered very sage suggestions, and truly engaged with me. I never felt like a client or patient; I felt like they were just women in my village that I’d known for years. Thank you for being in my village!

Being 6 weeks post partum, I had 2 doctor appointments this week:Doc Appt #1- My regular doctor. See her every year. My appointment was to get the Nexplanon IUD in my arm. She barely asked how I was doing. Did not ask how I was healing from birth, how breastfeeding was going (but did ask if I was), she was in and out to do the IUD so quickly, there was no pleasent conversation in catching up.Doc Appt #2- Midwife Heather who delivered Ashlyn. My appointment was my final post partum appointment and a scheduled pap smear. She asked how I was doing emotionally. Asked if I had a support system. She already knew breastfeeding was going great, but still asked if it still was. Mentioned Ashlyn looked like she was getting big and asked if I was interested in finding out how much she weighed (which I did, and with clothes and pee diaper on she weighed 11 pounds 😁) not only was the pap done, but also during the appointment, they (Heather and student Emily) checked my pelvic floor and checked for diasties-recti (totally butchered the spelling) its where the abdominal muscles separate, and also a breast exam. I was beyond better taken care of with my midwife whom I had only known for less than a year than with my doctor of 8-10 years.I wish the midwives here could be my familys doctor! Theyre great with my daughters and myself ❤️❤️

The people here will not necessarily honor your wishes for your birth. They did not honor mine. My birth experience there was deeply painful. My midwife was absent and unengaged. She and the student dismissed what I said when I tried to communicate about how I felt. She turned over my birth, almost entirely, to a student who was disrespectful and unkind. This after I asked for minimal involvement of students. I ended up being sent to the hospital after my birth. The midwife made my birthing parter stay behind to pack up our things so I was separated from my support system when I was scared, at the hospital, and having to go through a horribly traumatic situation. She also left me sitting in the bathtub there, after warm water ran out. She had no clue this had happened because she was absent through nearly all of my labor. My birthing partner ended up trying the heat water in teapots on the midwives stove and bring it in to try and warm me up. I was also told that I didnt have to like labor, I just had to do it. Please please consider this before chosing this place for your birth. I wish I had known and had been able to chose a safe birthing home and compassionate midwife.

From the very first call to the birth center to see if they took my insurance (before I was even pregnant), to the call scheduling my first appt, and to the day I went into labor—I had the most amazing and kind experiences and conversations from the wonderful staff (shout out to ERIN ELKINS!! You rock!) at PSBC. I primarily saw Heather and Jessica during my pregnancy for check ups and I just loved them both so much!Jessica Swan was my FANTASTIC midwife on call and Amanda and Sadie were my amazing student midwives on call for my labor! You couldn’t find yourself more amazing humans if you tried!! I came in about 7am after calling Jessica because my contractions were close but not too painful yet, so she had me come in for a check. Jessica and Amanda used a sling to rock my belly so my daughter would move out of my back (my back pain was terrible). You guys—they EACH did it for like 20 mins, I can’t imagine how sore their arms were during and after! Talk about a labor of love from them! I did go home after because my contractions fizzled out (that didn’t last long though, haha...went home, took a nap, and my water broke!).I had a fast and furious labor (first bad contraction was after my water broke at 2pm and I had my daughter at 4:27pm!) and the kind and compassionate care from Jessica, Amanda, and Sadie during my labor was beyond what I ever dreamed. Jessica constantly told me how strong I was during each contraction and helped me focus on my breathing (a couple times I got a little screamy, haha, and she helped me focus and stop the panic from the pain). Amanda applied counter pressure on my back with my contractions as my daughter was pressed up on my back during labor and my back labor was pretty painful (she literally did the counter pressure for EACH CONTRACTION—no break for her!! Talk about superwoman). Sadie was such a sweet cheerleader telling me how capable I was and how great I was doing. I brought my other 3 kids with me for this labor and the midwives loved on them and made sure they were ok the whole labor. Seriously those women were a dream team.My home visit on the 2nd day was amazing too from Jessica and Amanda! This birth center is very home like. You feel at peace there and safe. I would recommend this birth center to everyone. It’s family friendly (they have a neat family room with toys when you bring your kiddos with you!), they have huge, wonderful birthing tubs, and the beds are cloud soft! You won’t regret choosing this wonderful center.

Kyla and her team of assistants (Kaja and Farrah-hope I spelled those correctly) are AMAZING. I had the home birth of my dreams! After a traumatic first birth (with a different care provider) I was extremely nervous going into labor again. Kyla and her assistants provided everything I needed to get through the pain and I was even able to enjoy laboring towards the end-something that did NOT happen with my first! My husband said the difference of care was night and day. There wasnt a moment that I labored that the midwives werent offering some sort of encouragement or support to myself and that gave my husband the ability to be at peace and support me as well. In his words, he followed their positive, peaceful lead. Their care for myself and my newborn exceeded all of my expectations. Kyla was with me when I had a miscarriage in my previous pregnancy so it was incredibly special to have her there for the birth of my daughter. Ive heard stories of people whose care providers were not helpful through miscarriage but Kyla was amazing and gave me all the support I needed. All of the midwives at the birth center were instrumental in my presence of mind throughout my pregnancy and during the labor. Every prenatal visit gave me something I needed mentally or emotionally to prepare for the birth of my dreams and to enjoy the process without fear. The midwives at Puget Sound Birth Center provided excellent care and were very informative about all of the prenatal and newborn procedures. They answered all of my questions with respect to me as the mother and made me feel empowered to birth my child the way I needed to. I am convinced they are actually angels in disguise after they arrived at my house at the crack of dawn, helped with my home birth, and disappeared with all of their equipment so I could just cuddle my newborn! As you can see I cannot say enough good things about Kyla and ALL of the midwives at PSBC! I highly recommend them.

I began my pregnancy journey in a panic, it was unplanned and I had no idea where to begin.I searched online for a OBGYN and went to a general hospital like I believed I was supposed to. My first visits at the hospital were robotic and impersonal, as they usually are. I felt forced into many shots and tests that I did not want and wasn’t educated enough about. At the start of my second trimester I happened to watch a documentary called “ The Business of Being Born” and it really resonated with me, it opened my eyes to the field of midwifery and painted a beautiful picture of how birth is intended to be, natural, special, and personal, the opposite of what it has become in recent decades.I decided I wanted to experience the pain, the joy, and every moment that accompanies birth, in my own way, in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. After a short online search, I found Puget Sound Birth Center-Eastside Midwives. They had pictures of beautiful suites resembling a hotel, and they accepted my insurance!I immediately scheduled my visit and I couldn’t be happier with this life changing decision. Each visit was personal, relaxed, informative, and made to feel like you’re a woman that is about to embark on a beautiful natural experience, not just another number in their day. With this kind of support and encouragement I KNEW I could tackle an unmedicated water birth. So I did!...My first and second birth lasted only a few hours, we were given privacy when we wanted it, and attention when we needed it. It felt like home. I am still shocked to this day how manageable the pain was, all my life I was accustom to hearing how terrible labor is, and that was not the case for me.Our midwife Heather even personally massaged me through the tougher contractions and helped me with simple exercises to bring the baby down into the best position and alleviate my back pain. During the birth, Amanda massaged my feet in the birthing tub and the team encouraged me through every contraction reminding me how strong and capable I am!After all the newborn procedures were complete (some of which you can decide against such as the hepB shot). We were also given the option to see the placenta and get a detailed tour of it. That was very unique to say the least! After Heather and team assessed our babies successful latch and breastfeeding, we were able to go home the same day and enjoy our time as new parents. The next day we received a home visit to check on the baby and me. They made sure I had the help I needed to survive the tough first few weeks and that I was not hit with postpartum depression. Every step of the way I felt like i was in the best, caring hands. There is something really special about the natural birthing process, and having Heather deliver both my babies was another wonderful and personal touch.Thank you Heather and Erin (baby #1)And Heather and Amanda (baby #2)for assisting me with the greatest accomplishment of my life, I am forever grateful!

My review is overdue as my baby is a year old now, but perhaps hindsight makes it even more valuable. I truly had a wonderful experience at Puget Sound Birth Center and it was all due to the exceptional team that works there. I transferred my prenatal care in the later part of my pregnancy because of a cross country relocation, which is nerve wracking in itself, but the staff made the transition easy and I felt welcomed from the beginning. I met each midwife and all the students (I saw Eastside Midwives) and I can honestly say that I would have been thrilled to work with any of them - they are all so clearly passionate about their profession. I had the good fortune of having Kyla, Jessica, and Farrah at my delivery and they were a dream team. My husband and I are both in healthcare. My husband was initially wary of the idea of a non-traditional birth, but our experience completely impressed him and he tells all his colleagues how amazing our birth was. I cannot imagine how our experience could have been any better - our son was delivered so peacefully and happily. The past year has been the most gratifying of my life and I think the positive, joyous start to my parenting journey played a large part in that. I will always have gratitude and warm thoughts for PSBC.

Ive birthed three times with PSBC. Two with Heike and one with Geraldine. One there and two at home. I love the level of care they give. I had my first in a hospital and my last in a hospital (due to some heart complications with my baby). Hospitals freeze my body up during labor and draw it out. My PSBC midwives have a calming effect, which has shortened labor considerably for me. My last labor was my longest (28+ hours) and it was in the hospital...probably because my body knew that it would have been better off at the birth center. Regardless, the attention PSBC gives to mothers benefits them and the babies. I love them.

Heike and Ali were my midwives. Really, they felt like they were family. I miss them a lot. My two youngest were birthed at PSM using the relaxing underwater method. Nine years ago the Discovery Health Channel chose to highlight PSM to film a show called Unconventional Births. They filmed two other ladies and myself during our appointments, the births and home visits. Heike and Alis primary focus was on me and my baby as witnessed by the momma bear instincts kicking in as they shooed the crews away when necessary. The underwater birth was a wonderful experience that I got to share with my friends who came in stages to help my family. The suites are roomy enough for folks to hang out and just be there to eat, laugh, play games, or just plain sleep. I highly recommend PSM for any family wanting high quality care and a loving environment.
