I lived there a year ago. I sadly do not live in Houston anymore I moved back to San Antonio. This place helped me in so many ways. The people were nice as long as you followed the rules. The food was very nice. I lived at an adult/family homeless shelter before and after in San Antonio called Haven for Hope. There food was trash compared to the Covenant. I loved music night there and no one judges you about your past.

I have been to Covenant House in Washington DC and its probably one of the best in the USA. This Houston location on the other hand, is very questionable. They never answer the phone, they dont like answering emails and they dont like answering voice mail. Completely lazy people. They get paid to be lazy. People out here living in their cars and these fools do not care.

An honest review is this place is amazing & will help if you allow them to. I was here January 2018-April 2018 .while yes it does have its downside to things u have to keep in mind its a homeless shelter. Many of the problems I faced here were only bc I wasnt accepting to the experience when all they were trying to do was help me. I was able to get my housing and learn valuable life lessons . This place saved my life when I had NOBODY that staff was there for me 10000% & genuinely cared. Not to mention I actually loved their food it was delicious majority of the time & was served in good portions u will not find another shelter like covenant house & I found that out the hard way. This place is amazing in my eyes.

I’m 26 now, but I used to stay off and on at this shelter when I was 18/19. All I can say is that this place will help if you REALLY want the help. There are so many teens who come and go and who just play the system. Lots of drugs and crime. But if you really want the help this is a good place to go. They will help you with school, with a job, clothing, etc. Just stay out of trouble.

As a Original Founder, (it began as UNDER 21), I am truly proud of the work Covenant House has done through the years and the expansions that have been made since day 1.It is difficult for me to hear the bad comments, but sincerely wish those in need would realize the incredible potential that is available to them vs. the street life. Covenant House is blessed to have such wonderful staff members and I pray that anyone who truly is willing to make a change in their life will take full advantage of such a great opportunity.BAMBI LYNN SHEPHERD

If your commitment is to serve others as Christ came to serve (& not be served), the Covenant House will welcome you right in. (Lakewood teammate.) You will meet people of all ages, have group events together, fun-friendly interaction, and speak life to those working toward a better future in life. The staff is friendly and can assist you with any questions or concerns about your volunteer interests. -alz➕❤♡☝️

Will be reporting to tax office and filing a formal complaint to whoever it should concern. I came to their door looking for shelter for my boyfriend, we were greeted by security with what do you want? I mean what else would we be here for? To breath against your window and make it look cute? We were then sent to intake mind you he has nowhere to turn besides sleeping on the corner of the sidewalk or a metro station and its 10pm. We knocked and knocked and knocked and KNOCKEDDD, one woman saw us and looked away very quickly I started to bang a little bit harder and wave for ANYBODY to help us. A man sitting at the desk made a gesture with his hand moving sideways while nodding no. Not even attending to us? Im confused is this not a SHELTER? A PROFESSIONAL organization would have the DECENCY to open the door or idk maybe COME OUTSIDE AT LEAST (mind you the website and Google says open 24 hours) to say they were full because why else would they not choose to engage or acknowledge a homeless youth at their doorstep. Is homelessness within the youth a joke? Do they know what a birdbath is? Do they know what it feels like to sleep on the SIDEWALK EXPOSED TO ANY CREEPS OR ANY KIND OF DANGER? Do they know what it feels like to LONG for a little roof over their head to protect them against rain? How about having no money but STARVING for at least a COOKIE???? All I have to say is WHY??? Why do this to a youth? Why are they getting any sort of tax benefit from the people of Houston to assist whoever they favor rather than ALL youth IN NEED

It took 5 months for my family to get out of here. We arrived on January 1st, 2019 and only got out on May 9th, 2019 with NO help from the housing. We got a phone call from housing 4 days after we moved out, too late.I was 7 months pregnant when my husband and I arrived, and gave birth to my son while still there. My early days of post partum were traumatizing, since my husband wasnt allowed to visit me for more than 15 minutes at a time, and I needed him the most. There are decent staff members, but there are ones that are people who make decisions for the parents without having any parental experience themselves. The clinic is all but useless, and viruses spread like a wildfire because no one thinks to isolate the sick people. I was hospitalized while pregnant (and almost lost my son) because I contracted the flu that was going around the shelter. My roommate contracted pink eye from a child that supposedly went through a physical upon entering the shelter. Neither were isolated and I also contracted pink eye, which blew up into a full infection that almost reached my brain. I was hospitalized twice due to it and later underwent a surgery to remove infected tissue from my eye. My husband and son both have contracted pink eye since. All of which couldve easily been prevented if they isolated the sick residents. (I DID bring this matter up to the supervisors on duty, and was only shrugged off with the response Well we have no way of knowing it was your roommate.)They have a rodent and bug problem (especially in the KITCHEN) and punish the residents for it. I was severely underweight in my pregnancy and was told that if I had a Drs note, Id be allowed to bring in healthy food to snack on when needed. Several times, I was told that the food I had bought with my WIC card was not permitted and had to be returned. The food in the kitchens is both improperly cooked, and/or expired. My husband and I contracted food poisoning 8 times between us, leading me to be hospitalized AGAIN.I rarely get sick, as my husband and I try to live healthy lives for our sons sake. I fell ill more times in those 5 months than I have in my entire life.

The staff here only care about their own agenda and they use the residents who live there like servants by treating them badly, threatening them and then kicking them out. The people who run that place are self-serving garbage and think because they have the ability, they can abuse their position whenever they choose. They either need to shut this place down or fire the staff and hire new ones. They also take advantage of the donations that are given to them, DO NOT DONATE ANY MONEY OR ITEMS TO THEM. The people who run this place are worthless and nothing more than a waste of air and space. you will all burn in hell and you deserve it.

Only rating 1 star because I have to. The area the covenant house is in is NOT SAFE. The covenant house has staff that have favorites and they are NOT permitted to follow the rules. I was just put out of the cov because they said I dont like the rules when most kids break them. Now to be put back on the streets for voicing my opinion in a non violent manner is HIGHLY unacceptable. My friend was just put out despite their sickness. They NEED Dialysis and the covers made them choose, life skills or Dialysis and because they chose Dialysis they were removed from the program, that same friend was shot at last night in the Montrose area. I am now working with the community to get the Covenant house in order or removed from that area with better staff. Anything to genuinely help the young adults involved with the cov. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to add anything to help me help them, or would like more information !

This place does not bring equality at all. Somebody who has a background and has done worse than I am, can store food here and do as they please throughout the times of the facility because there in a program called R.O.P,. If somebody is in Safe Haven(Crisis), They can not bring in anything even though they did not make their life miserable with the law. Crisis attendants cannot go and get dressed because if their is no staff on duty they can not. The tricky word is they say staff and their is always staff present but their innerbition to be lazy and not help, makes it that staff is not there. But somebody who is known for shooting or stabbing someone... can. This place has no equality at all and these people dont really want to help you. Everything they do at the Covenant House is something you can do on your own without having their help at all. Its only helpful for living and food at times but regardless they do not want to help anybody who is here because the higher officials look down on you. Every single staff believes that you have a record and that you are here because you broke many laws, but you have not, your just homeless. Parents abandoned you and just because your 18-24, they really dont want to even have you around. Most of the time, staff is on their phone, interacting with the world instead of the human beings that are here. This place brings no equality and your words truly mean nothing to them so i suggest dont come here if you feel the need to speak. Theyll just restrict you and then terminate you, just so you can re-do the process and come right back. Somebody here told staff Im going to start recording MY OWN conversations for MY OWN safety. He came back that night and was restricted from going to his room because he wanted to protect HIS OWN SAFETY. This place looks down on you to hurt you, not build you. Being in this facility will crush your spirits and once you leave, you will not be the same. That cover letter they put up is to make you believe they are really trying to help... in certain areas, yes, but the whole 100, no. Do not come here unless you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO. Other than that, be your own person. Because the Covenant House Staff really does not care if you succeed, just get out of their faces.

I was there for a few months, over 20 years ago. It was the safest place I can remember. After that, I went to the Chimney Rock Center, and then everything went down to hell from there, bounced around 9 different places in less than 2 years. They do what they can, if a change is desired then the Dept, of CPS needs better funding, better screening, and better training, including PTSD from children running away from a war torn Latin American country. You can ask so much of people that can only do less than as much.Instead of bombing aborting clinics and wasting millions of dollars in donations to corporations that benefit from fueling your bigoted anger, how about taking care of the kids out there that by no fault of their own end up in places like CH? or the CRC? or the Texas Youth Commission? They need a home, and I am tired of remembering how many of those kids would just cry theirs eyes out and swallow their tears bc they didnt know what the hell was going on or what was gonna happen next. I spent 3 years in the system until I turned 18 and had to be kicked out by law. No skills, barely graduated, and no idea what to do, but at least I was safe while there, more than any other place. Dont cry me a river for the unborn, cry me an ocean for the ones abandoned and already forgotten by yall. What do you think they will do when they realize they dont have enough skills to defend themselves as contributing adults? in a city that incarcerates pretty much everyone with a past due ticket? They do what they can. Thank you guys, it wasnt easy by any means, but at least I was safe enough. My respect.

HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS STREET CAMP !!!!! The staff TALK DOWN& CONDEMN the CHILDREN& ADOLESCENTS there who need GUIDANCE, STABILITY, ENCOURAGEMENT, AND HELP! Facilty staff tell the youth to show up theres a spot available & once they arrive the facility staff put the YOUTH back on the streets TO POSSIBLY END UP DEAD!!! This facility also TAKES YOUTHS PERSONAL CLOTHING& BELONGINGS forgotten & IMMEDIATELY throws them away instead of possibly saving them incase they should return for belongings& STATE TO THEM THEY DONATED TO GOODWILL!!! Not EVEN CONSIDERING these poor youth barely have ANYTHING & are HOPELESS & HOMELESS!!! Some of the EMPLOYESS even told a parent THEY MAY BE BIAS & RACIST HERE & TREAT MANY OF THE YOUTH coming in UNFAIR & POORLY but THERE IS NOTHING THEY COULD REALLY DO ABOUT IT because They ARE NOT higher up in managment!!!! They spoke of a 12 YEAR OLD GIRL that was there & knew nothing about the streets & they had her roomating with 18& 19 year old pregnant females who bullied her into running away with them on the streets one night where they were breaking into cars in a nearby neighborhood & ppl homes& the SHELTER NEVER CONTACTED THE LEGAL GARDIANS OR PARENTS TO INFORM THEM OF THIS OCCURRENCE!!! At THIS FACILITY the RESIDENTS ARE NOT being properly supervised or monitored!!!! Allegedly the staff, one by the name of RUDY was trying to have sexual affairs with some of the FEMALE YOUTH that would RESIDE& come thru the shelter!!!! Also the STAFF would take home the children& youth donations!!! Punishment for the youth would sometimes RESULT in staff denying them MEALS!!!!!! Some of the staff are INTRODUCING & PROVIDING THE CHILDREN& YOUTH WITH ILLEGAL DRUGS here at this shelter & THESE POOR YOUTH LEAVE MORE HOPELESS& IN WORSE SHAPE THAN THEY CAME!!! This is ASHAME that ADMINISTRATION & CORPORATE was made aware & notified of ALL BEHAVIOR& ISSUES& DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to retify or RESOLVE the issues!!!!! I WOULD NEVER EVER RECCOMEND THIS PLACE FOR A PET LET ALONE A CHILD OR ADOLESCENT!!!! NO WAYYY!!!!! The staff are UNPROFFESIONAL, RUDE& OBNOXIOUS & it is VERY DISTRUBING some of the YOUTHS stories about their VISIT OR STAY AT THIS STREET CAMP called a YOUTH SHELTER!!!!! People who are donating& investing NEED to know exactly what their investing in& if its actually going for the CAUSE & PURPOSE INTENDED!!! To help the YOUTH & not FUND THE STAFF.

I was a resident at The Cove years ago. I want to publicly say Thank you tell The cove and all the staff. I was a homless teenage mother of a 12 mo. I stayed a total of three months. Within my first two weeks I had a job. I followed the rules and even worked on thier out teach program weekly. I was offered to apply for the ROPAL program where they help you get an apartment, among other assistance. I was the first teen with a child to be accepted in over ten years for ROPAL. I was so blessed and happy. The Cove helped me leran responsibility and take care of my child. They taught to be independent and self sufficient. Every few years I vist just to check in and say Thank you.PS: The staff are all very professional. They help those who want to help themselves. They wont hold your hand and do stuff for you. They dont kick you out during the day. Those teens are sent out to Job search. Slander on The Cove because of a few bad apples is not fare.

I had a friend stay here a month ago, she said they dont help you much. All they do is get you government assistance take your phone at certain times and then kick you out for the day. So you either have to get a job or just wonder the streets. She got a job, but was telling me its hard for people to find jobs that go to that shelter because they have a bad rep so they dont want people from that shelter working for them anywhere near by and they will call the shelter to see if youre lying about where you live. She finally got out of it but they took all her money and gave it to some girl that claimed she destroyed her stuff when she didnt even know or talk to her. The shelter didnt defend her in anyway and let this happen when she wasnt even there or even let her defend herself so they took her money she saved. If you have to come here i suggest keeping to yourself and always taking your money with you when you have to leave for the day. There are some desperate people there. Hide your valuables or dont take them at all with you. I even suggest buying a small lock box at walmart for 20 bucks.
