Performed a laminectomy on my husband on 06/17/21. My husband walked in and left disabled. On follow up Dr Harper suggested that my husband have a stiff drink or wine for pain management. Upon another follow up, he told my husband that his completely numb foot and sensitivity should be seen by a podiatrist. These were new issues following the surgery. After seeing a professional Doctor, it was discovered that my husband had a fractured spine following the surgery from Harper. He needed a fusion and bone grafts. He was using a cane or walker after Harpers surgery (not before). After the revision done by a competent Doctor on 9/10/2021, my husband is walking without difficulty and his foot is getting the feeling back. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH!I am reporting to the Texas Medical Board.

Dr. Harper is best surgeon for herniated discs. My husband had been suffering for 2 months with this and once Dr. Harper operated the herniated L4-L5 discs, he immediately walked out the same day of his operation. It is unbelievable to see him walking instantly. I highly recommend Dr. Harper and his staff who are excellent. Thanks, Dr. Harper and staff.

Dr. Harper did a Laminectomy on a friend of mine who had suffered several months before going to see him. Dr. Harper told him that he would wake up pain free and walking that evening. The surgery was 100% successful and he is a New Man that is pain free.I would recommend anyone needing this procedure to see Dr. Harper.

Don’t go to him if your sensitive or don’t want to hear the truth. Huge ego but that’s for a good reason. He performed a lamonectomy and a nerve decompression at l4 l5 and the day of surgery I was up and out walking the nursing staff. Before the surgery I couldn’t sit for more than a few minutes before nerve pain would drive me out of the chair. Now I am painless. Amazing surgeon if you can deal with a no nonsense attitude I would strongly recommend him. I make the third in my family who has used him without regrets.

Dr. Richard Harper is absolutely outstanding in his work. He removed all the extra bone resulting from my stenosis. It was such a relief as there was no pain and recovery was so fast for me. I would recommend him to anyone who wanted a first - class solution to his back problems.

Dr Harper literally saved my life! I have degenerative disk and have had multiple ruptured disks since 1993! He has released my extreme back and neck pain 4 times. Each time was a different area of my spine and I had relief for years in bt. My aunt went to another dr for the same exact surgery and the cord was nicked and she is paralyzed! Why would you go to anyone but the highest rated neurosurgeon you can get in to.

Beware!!! Beware!! This doctor did a terrible job on my mom’s surgery and someone else had to redo her surgery and he said that my mom’s surgery was done horrible!! She was in worse pain than before. Thank goodness she got a second opinion. She is doing so much better now. If there was a way to give him a zero star I would!!!

Horribly rude to my husband. Completely unprofessional. He was demeaning to him for absolutely no reason. We left so confused as to why he did not have an ounce of empathy or compassion. I would never recommend him. Too many other doctors to choose from here in Houston.

HARPER SURGERY HELPED NOTHING, PLUS CREATED NEW CHRONIC PAINIn March 2017, Dr. Harper performed a Lumbar Laminectomy on me to supposedly eliminate the chronic nerve pain in my lower right leg. Before the surgery, Dr. Harper told me that he wasn’t 100% sure, but he was 95% sure that this surgery would eliminate the nerve pain in my right leg, so I hesitantly decided to go ahead with surgery. Dr. Harper’s surgery did absolutely nothing for the nerve pain in my leg, and in addition, created a NEW chronic pain on the right side of my lower back. I noticed this new pain as soon as I got home from the hospital after the surgery, so I don’t believe it was coincidence. Prior to Dr. Harper’s surgery, I had NO chronic pain of any kind in my back, now it is there every day, and the nerve pain in my leg is as bad as it has ever been.

Normally I do not share comments but after reading reviews feel the need to share in this case.I went to Dr. Harper on a reference from a friend who suggested that I get a second opinion and recommend Harper. Will spare the details of injury but was in terrible lower back pain. A doctor in San Antonio said l needed my back fused in 4 or 5 places. I made an appointment and took my films to Houston.Dr. Harper reviewed my films and told me that perhaps I may need some fusions when I was in my 80s (was 45 at the time) but he did not operate on something that might happen. I knew then and there that was exactly the attitude I wanted from a surgeon so I scheduled the surgery and drove back to San Antonio still in pain. When it was time my wife drove me to Houston, I checked in at 7am, was in recovery 11am, up walking at 2pm and released to hotel next to hospital at 6pm. The next morning I followed up with Dr. Harper and wife drove me home to San Antonio. Dr. Harper told me to walk every day as part of my rehab which I did. When I was due a post surgery follow up, my wife was having some back pain as well and I asked if we could bring her films for him to look at. He agreed and after looking at her films (her name burned into the film-not a sticker or Post-It note, or hand written but actually x-rayed into the film) he told her to take the films back to where she got them because there was no way that was her films. Sure enough the hospital screwed up.Now I will address the other comments regarding his attitude. If you need a doctor who will hold your hand and tell you everything is going to be ok hes not your guy. If you want a doctor that will tell you the truth and do his job without the sugar coating you should consider him. For me I was seeking relief from my pain not find a new best friend. That was 20 years ago. Occasionally I have some back pain if I strain my back but it goes away and my spine is not fused in 4 places. Also it is important to note that my wife did not have unecessary surgery based on someones carelessness. I will call that a good trade-off any day of the week.I not only recommend the man, I thank God for him every day but each case is different. In the end only you can determine what is best for your situation.KennyRockport Tx

Very classy and impressive office. The staff is friendly, attentive and accommodating. The many framed accolades of Dr. Harper hanging on the wall in the room were extremely impressive and made me feel comfortable in the recommendation received from one of Dr. Harpers former patients. I was in the examination room with Dr. Harper for 30 minutes - the shortest doctors visit Ive ever experienced. But he obviously got the information required from our short question-and-answer period and examination such that he was able to make a diagnosis and recommendation. Of course, it helped I provided him a previous MRI, albeit somewhat dated, and he now requires a much more current one - rightfully so. He is very professional, very matter-of-fact in his conversation, very focused and never strays from the purpose of the visit. We never discussed the weather, hobbies, travels, likes, dislikes, the Astros or the Texans, etc. so I know very little about him other than I feel I made the right choice for treatment of my back issues.

I have suffered with HFS (Hemi-facial Spasms) intermittently for approximately 20 years. The past two years of that time has been very bad. The spasms increased in both frequency and intensity until I felt I could no longer stand it.I was invited to join a support group on social media , which I did. It was a mist helpful and enlightening experience.People are willing to share openly snd honestly with people that have the same or at least similar issues. Most recommended having MVD surgery, as that is the only way to actually cure the problem.I thought I would have to go to Pennsylvania to be treated by a Neurosurgeon that would produce a positive outcome. However, after reviewing a list of surgeons that are experienced with this particular neurological issue, I found Dr Richard Harper in Houston Texas. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet with the Dr and his amazing support staff. They made me feel very comfortable about my decision to have the surgery. I awoke after the procedure spasm free and remain so today.Dr Harper is a quiet, direct and to the point. The admitting nurse at the hospital told me that they referred to him as “the quiet genius”. I have to be very honest in this statement…. When you’re about to under go a Craniotomy, those are pretty comforting words to hear! No regrets!!
