I booked an appointment as a first time patient. It was a very bad experience and I ended up walking out. They were disorganized, didn’t have sufficient exam rooms so I was forced to wait a very long time. Then, they mixed up my exam results with my spouse, didn’t examine him because they used my exam results and Dr. Souza became defensive, unprofessional and we left the building. Bad customer service. don’t go there. You will be sorry if you do.

I was extremely pleased with my cataract surgery. The doctors and staff were friendly, efficient, knowledgeable and compassionate. I was treated quickly only having to wait for the numbing medication to take affect.Everyone there treated me with kindness and respect. After getting the PanOptix trifocal lenses I was amazed at how good my total vision was. Dr. Driscoll said that would be my best choice to avoid wearing glasses and he was right. I couldnt be happier with the way my surgery turned out. I had no pain or discomfort before, during or after my surgery. I would recommend Dr. Driscoll and Dr. Sousa to anyone that needs care for eye or vision problems.

One of the worst experiences of my life. It’s been almost 9 months since I had cataract surgery and a $3200 PanOptix premium trifocal lens implanted by Dr. Driscoll. I went in with good distance vision and I came out with 20/60 (the limit to drive is 20/40 fyi). Distance was so blurry and distorted that I couldnt even see more than a few feet away. Within days of surgery I called and messaged for Dr. Driscolls help, but he never answered. Dr Souza (his wife) replied saying that Dr Driscoll doesnt handle patients after surgery, that was her job. So I went to Dr Souza for more tests. She rudely dismissed my problem from the beginning, saying that the prescription was correct and they did nothing wrong. I just needed to give my brain time to adjust. She called me a non adapt which put the blame on me for not adjusting. I told her, and eventually Dr Driscoll, that I needed a new lens because this one was clearly way off and it was causing many problems. I was having trouble functioning in normal daily life. Dr Driscoll denied my problem and wrote in my records that I was just fine and noted that I could read my phone while in the office (I could see close up and that was it). He questioned the validity of my complaint. I was not only dismissed by both Dr Driscoll and Dr Souza, I was treated like a problem by both doctors and their staff.I no longer trusted them so I went to another doctor in town for help, but they couldnt help because they dont work with premium lenses. All they could do was confirm I had 20/60 vision and another problem I received from Driscoll. I eventually got a reference from a helpful doctor online to see Dr Faulkner on Oahu, so I spent a week on Oahu having the problem fixed. It was as simple as Lasik surgery to correct my vision. I came out of there with nearly perfect vision. Something Dr Driscoll could have done IF he accepted responsibility. It cost me $$$ to fix the problem. I also had Dr Faulkner implant the same premium lens in my other eye and I walked out of the office with perfect vision and zero problems. And the cost was a lot less. The only thing Dr Driscoll left me with was what Dr Souza called debris in my eye, so it is now like having cataracts all over again.I would never recommend Hawaii Vision Specialists. I would not wish them on my worst enemy. Either go to Ludwig or Dr Carpenter if you dont want a premium lens, or better yet go to the cream of the crop on Oahu and see Dr Faulkner and Dr Mau. They not only know what theyre doing, their entire office treats you like a valued customer. Night and day.Hawaii Vision Specialists never offered to compensate me for the bad lens or the extra costs of having to fix it on Oahu. I never received an apology or any attempt at making things right.

Hawaii Vision in Hilo no longer has reading materials in the waiting room. Reason: They say it is because of COVID. But they have many pamphlets on 3 -4 counters promulgating religious Christian ideology which the owners believe in. Since they hold a license to serve the public, why should they be allowed to propagandize religion at the expense of customers who do not share their beliefs. It is INSULTING in the extreme. The clueless front desk people offer this in defense. Well, no one else has complained! It seems that the owners also equally clueless. REMOVE THE RELIGIOUS MATERIAL!!!!!! Show some SENSITIVITY to other people who are customers.Hawaii Vision responded to my comment with a defensive explanation suggesting I was trying to prevent them from practicing their religious beliefs. That is incorrect, not true and they obviously are inventing a reason not to address the issue. I dont care if they Love Jesus (their remark!). I do care about ANYONE who think there religious beliefs should be made should be made PUBLIC, and not held PRIVATELY by the Doctors who own this business. It is ARROGANCE in the extreme and their condescending words are INSULTING.They continues to put their feet in their mouths by suggesting blessings from god which was completely rude, stupid and once again and not genuine. The Owners are so invested in their religious propaganda that any intelligent comments do not deserve an answer. Its what Jesus freaks do and cover it up with phony comments.AVOID THIS BUSINESS IF YOU dont appreciate PEOPLE WHO DONT RESPECT RELIGIOUS PRIVACY. !!!!! Its called MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS HAWAII VISION (ironic name for a business that has very LIMITED VISION towards customers.)

Office staff is professional, friendly, efficient and personable.Dr. Mikiala Souza is knowledgeable, thorough, candid, communicative, open to suggestions and gives me, as well as her other patients, Im sure, the opportunity to ask questions and voice our concerns regarding our occular health. She also affords her patients the opportunity to make informed decisions regarding the direction of treatment based on a compilation of test results, long term research findings and an in depth knowledge in her field of study. In addition, she is quite personable and very easy to talk to. Just an excellent, knowledgeable, skilled physician. I value and have the utmost trust in her knowledge, skill, competence, professional advice, and recommendations regarding my occular health. I highly recommend Dr. Mikiala Souza as an Optometrist and Ovcular Disease Specialist.
