(3/27/2021)short hike with some cute wildlife. Lots of screaming frogs in swamp area right by parking lot. Saw this long garter snake. And also a curious chipmunk that watched us a while.Giving only 4 stars because:1) theres a lot of trash. Really needs to be cleaned... the state should send people to clean it, its really not good for the wildlife. We need better environmental protection for natural areas like this. Really sad that so many people pollute.2) powerlines run through area.3) yellow trail runs back up this weird powerline road area but it isnt clearly marked and was confusing.Checked for ticks after and didnt have any.
Good little hike to take with your young family as it is not too difficult.
Were spending the summer visiting all of the Audubon spots in RI so at this point its easier to tell the good from the bad and everything in between. The first trail and a little beyond are nice beautiful lush forests with lots of green and high trees. We didnt like the rest of it as much. Its not horrible by any means but you bump into a massive row of high-tension wires and over all, youre never too far removed from the real world in terms of roads or structures. The biggest drawback we saw was that the map signs posted along the route unfortunately, despite having a star symbol on the map legend to show you are here, that symbol isnt on any of the maps. Except for one map sign where someone doodled a star in. This is even more disappointing because the Audubon headquarters are on the same grounds. Not a terrible experience but if youre looking to hike an Audubon trail, there are better ones to choose from. Watch out for ticks on all of the trails.
Great place for quick easy hikes.
Great local place to take a hike with the family
Very disappointed. Trails are poorly marked and maintained in most areas, some trails are not marked at all. Gets confusing when you cross thru the power lines, no sign indicating you gotto walk down the national grid road a ways to pick up the yellow trail. Also at the blue/yellow trail merge, no sign indicating one of the paths to blue trail. Also Im Not sure how they measured the trail distances, but they claim the blue to yellow then back via blue is 2mi. However I walked the entire blue, yellow, and orange trails and walked only 1.75 mils total. Only scenery youll see is views of the power lines and RT. 7. Dont waste your time.
Text you for a nice walk underneath the power lines in smithfield. And then some.
Easy to find. Good size parking lot. Well marked trails. Easy hikes.
Nicely trimmed paths. Open area. Easily accessible
Well marked choice of three trails. Great hike for kids. Need bug spray! Close by via Route 295.
Beautiful hiking trails! I read they were like being in a fairy forest and it really does feel that way. Look forward to going back 💖
Pretty. Nice walking trails, well marked. No real wildlife to be seen though.
Wonderful place to walk. Took my 17 month old daughter, and she loved it. Even in the winter it is a very nice outdoor setting. Was great to hear the birds, and running water. Even if we only saw the running water. It is located right next to our favorite grocery so Im hoping to make this a regular pre-grocery trip for the family.
Building was closed but we were disappointed that the outdoor gardens were overgrown and not tended to. Granted, we are in a pandemic and a drought, but it was still disappointing to see.
Great place for a hike!
Great walk in the woods on a cold winter day. Well marked trails and great for a quick and easy hike.
A nice place to go walking. Not too difficult a walk.
Great place for a hike in the woods, or a field trip! The staff here were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. There is free parking, facilities inside the building and the staff kept our first graders engaged for the entire two hour hike!
This is a beautiful area to visit for appreciating nature. There are 3 trails (that I know of) which cover varying areas of the entire refuge, and offer choices in how much you want to explore/what level of exercise youre up for. Its a great spot for an experienced nature enthusiast to explore, but its also a great area for families with younger children (although I dont believe they allow dogs.) It is DEFINITELY not stroller friendly, so everyone who walks it needs to be ready to be on their feet and cover some rugged terrain. The trails are roughly marked to keep you on them, however beyond that, youre walking in the woods, not on a paved path. The great thing is for people who are looking for more rugged terrain, more mountainous areas (like in Acadia in Maine) this is one of the closest areas you can get in RI. There is a significant part of the trails further into the refuge which do cross over some large power lines. This can be disconcerting if youre afraid of being near large industrial power lines. However its also a nice reminder that as secluded and wild an area as it is, youre very unlikely to get lost in the woods and reenact the Blair Witch Project (the offices do have a guest book they encourage you to enter your details into for safety purposes, however I dont believe its a requirement to explore the trails.)
RI has many snall Wildlife areas goid for walking NOT appropriate for bringing dogs as they disturn wildlife and its the regulations. But also makes them, wildlife areas peaceful and few people most times.
Great hiking spot. Fairly overgrown in spots so bring bug spray or plan to pick ticks later. The back, yellow trail was inaccessible today.
Inside the old red shed an unknown person was writeing on the wall with a knife. If you go walking alone make sure your carrying a piece. A pair of black boots were found with a knife gash to the ankle. They may have been left by the zodiac serial killer.
Amazing place for a hike
Trails were muddy and snowy. Probably best to go in Spring or summer
A walk through nature gives peace
Well marked and maintained trails.
Nice short hike, peaceful
Easter egg hunt was adorable
Nice groomed trails
Nice place to take a walk
Nice little hike
I like it !!!
It is excellent to visit with the family. Children can learn to explore and appreciate nature. The orange path is the shortest. Perfect for children or people who tire quickly.
