This was about the worst barber shop Ive ever been in. The place is run by a husband and wife who are completely unprofessional. And my haircut looked like a 10 year old did it. Will definitely not be going there again. And especially with covid, you would expect the place to be cleaner.

Place is clean and affordable but that’s about it. Barber looked confused the entire time and took upon themselves to cut hair the way they wanted. Not my first or second choice place.

I took my 2 year old daughter here for a haircut and, even though my daughter was quite scared, the barber Martina did an amazing job. I cant believe how perfectly straight she cut the hair of my very active toddler! Geared towards men, they have comfortable leather seats, a wide variety if services, giant TVs, a cozy atmosphere, and very affordable prices. If you are looking for a consistent place to get your hair cut at, A Cut Above is definitely worth a try!

After searching for nearly two years for a solid barber shop, my search has finally ended! A Cut Above truly lives up to its name. Martina is the first person to cut my hair *exactly* how I wanted it. Great atmosphere and wonderful people. I intend on being a regular from here on out!I should also note that they did a wonderful job on my 2 y.o daughters hair the other month.

Walked in last minute since my primary barber was closed and needed a haircut asap. A woman cut my hair. Very outgoing personality. Kept it simple haircut 2 and 1. Straight edge blade for the back and edged the front with precision and accuracy. Very pleased with the outcome. $14 in total minus tip

This is a step back to the old time Barber Shops. Carlos and Martina make you feel at home offering coffee ,soda not to mention a great haircut. Its an enjoyable experience compared to the production line hair cutters. Very reasonable pricing as well!

Ive been going here 7 years now. This is what a guy needs - a place to get a haircut. They do styling too. Martina is great. They just finished renovations and I think theyve got more features coming soon.I even bring my daughter here to get her hair layered and cut. Ive seen other kids there too.

I have been to this barbershop a total of three times. The first time, back in May, I had Martina cut my hair and it was much shorter than I would have liked. I decided to give the place a second chance in June. The haircut I got from Alyssa was wonderful and exactly what I wanted. I decided to come back today to get my haircut and it was Martina again. When I sat in the chair, I asked for a low fade haircut and Martina simply said is a number 2 alright. When I said can I get a low fade again, she replied yeah, so you want a number 2 at the top of the side. I figured she knew what she was doing since I already addressed I wanted a low fade. At the end of the haircut, the sides are NOT a low fade, it is a simple 2 all around the sides and back. The two sides arent even as far as when it starts to go into the side burn. Ive read several reviews at this point that Martina does not listen to customers when they tell her what they want, just to make sure it wasnt just a one time mistake; it clearly isnt. I will not be returning here again, not unless it is someone other than Martina cutting the hair.

I can say Ive gone in with a frown but I leave with the biggest smile of my life!! Ive been going for a year and I always go to Zach, Ive never seen someone cut hair so eloquently like him. Ive seen the shop before the renovations and Im just amazed at the atmosphere, it really feels like a old fashioned barber shop. Cant wait to come in soon, keep up the great service.

Was in urgent need of a haircut and decided to give it a try. Worst mistake ever. Before I even sat down I asked her (Martina) I think thats her name, if she could cut ethnic hair because obviously ethnic hair is different from white people hair, she said yes so I sat down and the nightmare begun. She shaved my hair in the correct numbers I asked her to but even then it was uneven at some parts. she was then supposed to line-up my hair. She told me and I quote I told you I could shave your hair I didnt say I could do that which barber in the history of barbershops doesnt know a simple line-up? She then gave me a crooked line-up messing up my hairline she then said and I quote I cant do the line because your skin is very dark. My hair is also black so I guess she was trying to say she couldnt see my hairline. I wonder how all the other barbers in the past managed to do the line-up on such dark skin they must have superpowers. I understand maybe shes just ignorant and rude she doesnt know theres certain things you dont say to people, but what really annoyed me the most was she LIED from the beginning telling me she could shave ethnic people hair. Why lie? If you dont know how to shave certain hairstyles why not say it upfront to save everyone time? I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Martina is the worst barber I have EVER encountered in the State of NJ and quite possibly my lifetime. My 80yr old grandma with arthritis could have given me a better shave Id rather ask her before I go to this place again. If youre not a prisoner (shes very good at shaving people bald) or white dont bother going to this barbershop. WORST PLACE EVER!!!

Im particular about my hair. When I moved to South River 6 years ago, I still traveled back to Brooklyn once a month to get a haircut from old barbar because I couldnt find one here that cut my hair the way I like it. That was until I decided to try A Cut Above. Im glad I did. I finally found a barbar here who does my hair to my critical satisfaction. Additionally the shop is decided like old barbar shops. Old style chairs. And they still use heated shave cream and straight razor to shave the back of my neck. Excellent job.

My experience with Cut Above Barbershop has been great. They just want to know what you want and they will get it done. They know that most of their clients want to go in and get out. Very comfortable atmosphere, clean, they offer me coffee or a drink any time I walk in , even had lollypops for my 4 year old son , accommodating very friendly. Have nice little selection of cigars as well. Plus best of all a terrific haircut!

This is the kind of place you forget your issues, have a laugh while getting a haircut. Everybody there from manager to barber will make you feel at home. If you get there early enough on a Saturday, you will experience Martina’s Cuban mix coffee, it will get your hear up and ready. For the longest time she has been trying to get me to stop dying my hair black, but you just can’t beat Pep Boys one Dollar black spray paint special. In closing, this is a great place for haircuts and styles, and I highly recommend it for all. Thank you for your services.

Best Barbershop around by far! Alyssa, Carlos, and Martina made me feel like a part of their family since I started going there a little over two years ago. Alyssa is an artist with the straight blade and scissors . Honestly the first time she cut my hair I told her to do whatever she wanted just make me look good and no other instructions. She did her thing and it turned out perfect and Ive been getting the same thing every Friday ever since. I started just getting hair cuts and got talked into a hot shave one day and now i cant go a week without one. I highly recommend a hot shave for anyone whos never had one before. Fair warning though, good luck staying awake its a struggle once the hot towel goes over your face. Ive never left the shop without looking and feeling like a million bucks. Give them a try I bet youll feel the same

Martina does not listen AT ALL to what the customer wants, then is arrogant with you when you tell her otherwise. She does what she wants, and does it sloppily and rushed as well. Owner is a very nice guy, but would never go there again.

These ratings are a perfect example of to each their own, I guess. Went today for the first time with my son. Couldnt tell you who the woman was who cut his hair because she neither introduced herself or asked my sons name. When I attempted to explain the haircut he wanted, she ignored me and a picture I was trying to show her and just repeated, yeah ok, yeah ok. He came out with a mop top with blunt bangs, uneven sides and a weird choppy line along the back of his head. My son is not one to worry much about his hair, yet the first thing he said when we got in the car was, it looks horrible. We wont be back.

I like the place. Ive been there before with my mom and sister and they get good haircuts. I never really got one but I am getting one today for the first time.

My son is autistic and HATES hair cuts. Today we went to A Cut Above for the first time and met Zach. My son was very comfortable with him and agreed to come back! Everyone was very friendly and we look forward to only using A Cut Above from now on!

I first came here on May 17th, with a second visit on June 29th. (I know the dates because I decided to try this shop to have my haircuts at the same time as my wifes (by appointment) cut and color at a nearby stylist.I did NOT look at the reviews before my first haircut.On that, first, occasion - I specifically told the barber the position and length for my sideburns. As she was working, I could not tell how well she was following my instructions as I cannot wear my glasses during a hair cut.Well, when the cut was finished my sideburns had, virtually, disappeared! They were located about an inch above where I showed her AND the hairs were cut so short that (because of my grey hair) they seemed to disappear.However, after I read the MIXED revuews, I gave the shop a second chance.BIG MISTAKE!The, limited, good news.....she got the sideburns correct.THE BAD NEWS.....she cut the rest of my hair even shorter than she cut the sideburns the first time. When I left the shop, I could not even comb or part my hair. It was shorter than short.This time, my wife said ENOUGH ALREADY.My rating reflects my belief that very little in this world rates the lowest or highest rating! So...if there was a 0 rating, I would rate this shop a 1. It is one step above just awful.Further, I charged my haircut which was sensibly priced at, I think, $13 to my credit card and was surprised when the proprietor insisted on getting my ID. Seriously? An ID check for a charge under $20??Many places do not even require a signature under $25/$50! Why annoy customers for such a small purchase.Obviously, I will never go back and will seek a better experience elsewhere.8/4/2017While I thank you for your comments and offer - I will not return.Had a haircut, this afternoon, in a more local shop and am pleased with the results.Would NOT take a refund, as I might have been PARTIALLY at fault for not giving explicit instructions. Got my hair cut from Martina showed me a new style for my face, and received overwhelming complements. Have to admit was a little apprehensive cutting my hair here at first because of the retro look of the place, but now Im there biggest fan told my brothers about the place and they have become CutAbovers too.Was thinking of letting my dad into our little secret about the place just found out hes already a customer.I guess this place is our new family hangout...

My husband has been here twice but never went back but I decided to go for my sons haircut hoping it goes great. The place is great looking but the lady Martina was quite rude and cold. You have to be a frequent customer to feel welcomed but the other guy behind the counter (I think the owner was very sweet and welcoming) my 6 year old and I waited for 30 mins to get a hair cut and was the first in line to get a haircut while two other men came afterwards but she took the last guy who came in who barely waited 5 minutes! Then she said oh are you waiting for (the other haircutter) and I said it doesnt matter who, my son just needs a haircut. Then after 15 mins she cuts his hair and my son was next. She asks me what kind of hair style so I said a comb over and tried to show her a picture of what I wanted but she just ignored it and started cutting his hair. I sat down and she asked what number on the sides and I said a 1 because he always gets it that short. But she said its too short and cold for that so she suggest # 2. I said she can do the bottom a 1 and blend it to the 2 like a faded look but she cut straight up the sides with the number 2. After ONE hour of being there with a child, he didnt get the blended sides for a combover but got long grass looking hair on top. If she would had seen my photo, she would have known what type of combover I wanted. Basically you go in there gettin a haircut what they think is best and not what you want. The place has great potential but the attitude has got to go. My family is never going back and I dont/wont recommend this place. I should have read all the reviews here and not just the good ones since some of the bad ones seem to be pointing out what I experienced.
