I and my brother, Scott, would like to commend Nurse Joyce for all she did throughout my mom’s six-week stay at Brooking Park. My mother was in St. Louis, but my brother was in Montana, and I was in Houston. Scott and I were there to visit often, but Nurse Joyce called Scott and I anytime there was a change in Mom’s condition. She enumerated all kinds of things: Is she eating or drinking well? Is she frail walking? Or her mental status? Joyce noticed that mom was anxious, so when she went to administer the resident’s medications, as was the case every day, she began to take mom with her to ease her anxiety. Mom passed away on July 13. Nurses Linda and Julie, and the Nurses Aids were all highly commendable too. Many thanks to everyone at Brooking Park for the care given to mom, were very grateful.

My family and myself highly recommend Brooking Park. My father spent time on both the acute rehab side and the skilled nursing facility. Both experiences were excellent. The facility and rooms are beautiful, bright, comfortable and welcoming. The staff was helpful, attentive, kind and advocated for my fathers needs to be met. The food is delicious and the dining halls are just lovely. They go the extra mile to make the facility feel like home. They even have a yummy bakery that is open every day for homemade sweet treats. The therapy that my father received while on both sides was excellent. They helped him get strong enough to be able to return home. The staff worked with us and kept us informed and provided excellent care. While it was not easy to have my father in a nursing home, this is definitely the next best place other than home. We highly recommend it...

My best friends mother lives at Brooking Park in their Assisted Living. I often assist with checking in on her and each time I visit, she always appears so happy and full of life. The staff are always very friendly and welcoming. The nursing staff genuinely care for the people that reside in the AL. I dont know much about the other areas of the building but I can only imagine the care is just as excellent. The building is always very clean. I would highly recommend the Assisted Living at Brooking Park if your loved one is in need.

It is such a hard decision when you are looking for a place that your parent will spend their last few days in. I could not be happier that I took my mother to Brooking Park. The staff treated my mother like she was family. I know that I was probably a tough customer and no one ever feels like their loved one is getting enough attention or care, but the men and women at Brooking park did their best to make sure my mother was comfortable and I was too. I would highly recommend Brooking park to anyone who has to make the tough decision I did. Thank you to the nurses who made sure my mother wasnt in pain, the housekeepers who made sure the room was clean, the cooks that delivered delicious food to our room and the chaplain who was there when we needed a shoulder to cry on. God bless you for what you do staff of Brooking Park.

My father has recently passed away. He was in the skilled nursing at Brooking Park before being rushed to the hospital where he died two days later. When he was brought to the hospital the doctors found out that he had pneumonia and a respiratory virus. He was not responding to treatments any more. I get horrified just thinking about this place and the way he was treated there. The stuff, with a very few exceptions, is simply incompetent. And that is not the worst part. The nurses, the CNAs lack basic human decency, not to mention the compassion and skills. And the visiting doctor from St. Lukes hospital... I do not think he ever even heard of a Hippocratic oath. The place is a disgrace. And I wish that people who work there one day will get to experience the level of care that was afforded to my late father.

My Mother recently stayed at Brooking Park and I must say, I could not have been happier with my mothers care. Even though the building is under a renovation, the staff went out of their way to make Mom comfortable. My mothers treatments and the care provided was top notch. I appreciated and noticed that upper management was often in the halls and asked if we had what we needed and seemed to genuinely care. I would not hesitate to bring a loved one back to Brooking Park. Kudos to the team.

We were extremely happy with the care our mother received at Brooking Park. The entire staff from the time we walked through the doors were always friendly and helpful. Further, it seemed like everyone we talked to knew Moms name and had a nice story about her. In other words, the folks at Brooking Park took the time to personally know our mother. We would recommend Brooking Park to anyone.

We moved our terminally ill mother from the Springfield area to Brooking Park in order for to spend her final days close to us. The care she received in the skilled nursing section was was thoughtful, compassionate and responsive not only to her needs but ours as well. The spiritual support she received from Pastor Jake could not have been more meaningful. Every staff member who cared for her provided such comfort and care. We are indeed grateful to all at BP who helped her (and us) through this difficult transition. Thank you.

Brooking Park took wonderful care of my grandfather! The staff went above and beyond to make sure he was comfortable and had everything he needed. On top of the excellent care they provided, they also took time to get to know him on a personal level, which I know he really appreciated. I cant say enough good things about Brooking Park!

Beautiful facility, good food. Some staff on the skilled nursing side have hearts of gold but they cannot balance the systemic disrespect ad rough handling of fragile, vulnerable patients. There is a toxic mixture of de-humanization and incompetence. I had assumed that if I was present and pleasant, I could prevent mistreatment, but I realized that I was wrong and moved her to a nearby facility which is 100% better.

I regret taking my mother to Brooking Park even though the therapists were very good with Mom and some of the nursing staff were very nice. They did not help assure that she got proper sleep at night, they did not assure that she was eliminating properly, and they did not assure that she received proper anxiety and pain management after it was known she was uncomfortable. She went for rehab and the admitting nurse brought in a few papers to sign then disappeared without she or anyone giving any orientation. Bed was left in highest position; I figured out by myself where to take her to eat, and then spent next 3 hours following her around the entire facility until I finally requested from a med tech that she be given a medication to help relax her as she was very anxious, and I informed him if the nurse did not come back to talk to us that I would be taking my mother to a different facility. The nurse said she did not need to talk to me as she had paperwork from the hospital. So I gave her information she needed to know about my mother who had dementia. My mother was there 5 nights and 4 1/2 days. I noticed the discharge nurse checked off that Mom was eating and drinking well and eliminating well even though this was not true at all, in fact she lost 2 1/2 lbs. and hadnt had a BM the whole time as far as was known. She probably did not belong on rehab at all, as we got a report confirming she had cancer, and luckily I got her home on hospice whose staff were so helpful! She died less than 2 days later.

I really believe he will correct the communication issues.

I stayed over 2 months at Brooking Park for rehabilitation following a hip fracture. I can honestly say the professional staff exceeded my expectations. This includes the therapists, administration and care providers. The food was appetizing with a good variety. I would highly recommend BP for their rehab program. While the majority of aides were helpful, it is obvious that BP is short staffed in this area. Thanks to all of them for taking such good care of me!!

Making a decision on the best possible health care facility for a loved one can be extremely challenging & emotionally draining. Our choice on Brooking Park ended up being THE best for my husband. The admin staff was attentive and helpful; the techs were extremely accommodating and the therapists helped tremendously. My husband now needs more rehab so BP was HIS first choice. He knows the team helped him before with loving care so this time, the stress is so much less for all of us. Thank you BP team!

When my Dad was at Brooking Park for rehab, he felt very well cared-for. He felt that everyone from the nurses, to the porters, to the custodial staff and even to the man (doctor?) who came in to trim his toenails, food service folks--everyone treated him like royalty. (The fact that he referred to himself as Sir William probably helped!) So thank you, Brooking Park, for taking such good care of my father.

I noted that most Google reviews were written by disappointed family members of patients. This one is from a patient who spent 32 days in rehab. Right now the building is under major renovation, including jack hammers beginning at 7:30 a.m. Because of the radical changes in facilities, all Physical and Occupational Therapies are squeezed into one small room. The gifted professionals working there have to literally step over each other and their patients. Despite the inconvenience, I must emphasize that my 3 hours of therapy were highlights of my days. During construction, meals are served in the former Activities Room with long delays for serving. I sometimes asked for a room tray, although the items on the tray didnt always match my order. The Dietary staff seemed to cope fairly well with the building changes. Another reviewer touched on the long delays responding to Nurse Call Lights. My average time was 25 minutes, except at night which was much worse. One afternoon when friends were visiting, it took me 40 minutes to get a pain pill. Some nurses and aides were very kind and caring. Many were preoccupied and dismissive, dashing off to other duties. I was shocked when a male attendant sat in my recliner after bringing me a bed pan, a huge violation of privacy.. In short, I have to echo the warnings: DO NOT SEND A LOVED ONE TO BROOKING PARK!!!!

My conversation with the nurse was interrupted several time because the nurse had to go give a patient a pill. could not have a full conversation. Since it looked like they needed more staff I had my daughter who is a nurse apply for a job there, only to find out they are the least paid in the area. They do a great job but I think they may need a Union or something. They are not being treated or paid what they are worth. But they do try, which is more than I can say for other facilities

It is difficult to sum up seven years of care into a couple of paragraphs. Having a successful experience living in a retirement community depends on many variables, the needs of the resident, the skill of the caregivers and support staff, the attention of the administrators, and the expectations of the family members that oversee the care of their loved one.My mother spent seven years in Brooking Park. The first four were spent in the assisted living wing. She was 69 and suffered from Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD). To move my mom into an assisted living facility at that young age was extremely stressful. The last three years of her life were spent in the skilled care wing. In all my comings and goings (about three times a week for seven years), I was fortunate that I had the time to get to know the majority of the caregivers. Most had been with Brooking Park for 5-15 years. I saw them as hardworking, dedicated, and empathetic toward the residents. Humans taking care of humans...one of the hardest professions. Being a caregiver is physically and emotionally very demanding. It is challenging even for the best skilled and most dedicated individual. One of the hardest things that I had to learn was how to be an advocate for my mom at the same time that I learned how to embrace those who worked in the retirement facility. I wanted my mom to see us as one unit, a family. There is a LOT of pressure on the family member(s) overseeing the care of a loved one. And when there is an issue, and in EVERY retirement community there will be a least one issue, how will you, the caregivers, and the administrators work together to resolve the issue? How will you manage any guilt or frustration that you may feel? A tall order at best. What I found at Brooking Park was their motto, Worry Less, was absolutely true for me. I found that 98% of the caregivers and staffers were kind and responsive. I truly believe that they loved my mother and my mother loved them. I found the transition from assisted living to skilled care to be smooth and predictable. In the final hours of my mothers life, I found the nurses, caregivers, and staff at Brooking Park to be respectful, empathetic, comforting, knowing, and professional. My mothers passing was peaceful and graceful. I was fortunate. I still drop in from time to time. I found that not only was Brooking Park my mothers extended family, it was mine as well. I truly hope this information is useful to others.

My father was a patient/resident there in early 2013. He was a severe stroke patient but the staff there did not seem to have the patience to deal with his confusion or even disorientation. The physician on staff opined that he was making acceptable progress with physical therapy but the social worker (who seemed to have a power complex) kept manipulating the file and changing her prognosis in a negative fashion. Ultiatmely, she sent a discharge recommendation to Medicare to cease his benefits before consulting with family and after the physician indicated that he should at least stay for the duration of his medicare benefits, 3-4 more weeks. The social worker staff is poor and covers up errors for each other. The nursing and tech staff varies--some are excellent if you get to know them personally but others are very slow to respond. Overall, I think the facility pushes the tough rehab cases out of the door too early to protect their statistics for rating purposes, and I think they push medicare patients out if private pay patients need beds. I also think theres a bit of institutional racism or insensitity with the social worker staff. They talk down to and disfavor minority patients. I dont think there is physical abuse of any kind and the food is good for the setting. Only use as a last resort in the West County of St. Louis--there are others with leadership and staff which put the progress of patients first which is not the case with Brooking Park. Despite media commercials saying they care and so-called favorable ratings in US News, thats all smoke and mirrors. They do not consistently care.

I had a similar experience to what Paul said, particularly with regards to the social worker. She was dishonest, rude, condescending, and the theory about the hard rehab cases being discharged early has a very familiar ring to it. A couple of their nurses struck me as a bit too aggressive with my parent when it came time to sit her up. A little more gentleness and patience wouldve been appreciated. Also my parents teeth needed brushing, something she couldve mostly done herself if slightly encouraged, but I ended up being the one to make that happen. Her eyeglasses also went missing during her stay here. It took me a little while to see through some of the fakery of this place, but dont be fooled with deceiving appearances. What really matters at any health care oriented facility, is the quality of care, and empathy of staff. Brooking Park receives a failing grade on both, especially the second part. In fairness, I didnt think all their nurses were bad, but that department needs to be looked at, as does social services.

My 90+ year old parents attended my daughter’s wedding this weekend in St. Louis thanks to Brooking Park. Mom and Dad reside in assisted living in a care community in central Illinois. One is confined to a wheelchair and the other suffers from dementia. My family could not have managed them at our house or even in a hotel setting because of their medical needs. In trying to find a solution, I learned that few facilities in the St. Louis area offer care for very short stays, as we needed. Most have minimums of a week or two.Fortunately, I learned that Brooking Park would accept residents for the short term. BP learned my parents’ health needs, and provided a very nice room, caring and responsive staff, and good meals. It looked like the residence where they live. My siblings and I knew they were safe! Without Brooking Park, I fear my parents would have experienced their only granddaughter’s wedding solely through a photo album. Instead, they attended the ceremony, ate the reception food, met other relatives, and even won the anniversary dance as the longest-married couple in attendance!

We recently had to place our parents into a care facility and after an extensive search and doing our homework we chose Brooking Park. We have been treated like family since the day we took our tour. We have never had to look for elderly care and so we took a list of questions with us to each facility we visited. Mike Enloe, the Administrator, who took us for the tour and has worked with us throughout the transition commended us on asking the questions and took the time to answer each and every one. We feel he told us the truth about Brooking Park and what it offered, so we placed our parents there. Sadly our father only lived 4 weeks after he moved in. He had a quick reoccurrence of cancer and we lost him 3 days after we found out. The staff there couldnt have been more loving and caring and were by our side the whole time. Their chief nurse Tom stayed overtime to care for our father and to help us through it. He and his staff are so dedicated and they were there every moment we wanted them to be. Their Chaplin Jake is unbelievably loving and giving. He spent hours with us through those last three days and even came all the way to Edwardsville, IL to be at the funeral. Another special caregiver we want to mention is Treeana. She was especially caring to our father while he was there. Now our mother is at Brooking Park in the skilled nursing area. Joyce, the head nurse and her staff, along with Shannon the social worker, are the sweetest and most loving people and care for her every day. They dont only take care of her physical needs, they take care of her mental needs. The facility is beautiful and kept very clean. It has outdoor patios near the rooms and they get to enjoy being outside often. To sum it all up, I recently asked our mother how she liked living at Brooking Park. She said I really like it here, and the food is really good. Then I asked her if the staff was treating her well and she said Those people are Saints!. Thank you Brooking Park for making us a part of your family and doing the things for our parents that we couldnt.
