The only reason it got two stars is because my dad liked the room. Otherwise the staff seemed uncaring and almost mechanical. I like to think that they did no harm but definitely lacked people skills when communicating with family. They showed no empathy at all. On discharge day my dad was wheeled out I was given a stack of paperwork and wished well. No one explained prescription, appointments, follow ups. I wasnt even told what medication was already given so I didnt administer it again. The whole thing was just a bad experience. I do not recommend this facility to anyone.

* 8/30/21 Since my original review, I have a significant concern about the medical care and communication with loved ones at this facility. My mother passed away a day after being sent to the ER on 8/25/21. What I learned from the ER doctor has me extremely concerned that my moms medical condition was not properly monitored or communicated to to the family.🙄The only reason I give it two stars is bc the rehabilitation professionals were excellent, but it doesnt outweigh the lack of medical care that resulted in my mothers suffering prior to her death. Since her death, not one expression of condolence for our loss. Just a form letter to let us know that she was discharged from their care.Earlier post:My mom has been at this Center since June 20, 2021. She was admitted through the rehabilitation side, and transferred into long-term care a few weeks later. All the staff, especially the physical and occupational therapists have been excellent. The front desk workers are also very pleasant and helpful. I still have a few concerns (medical updates and dietary issues) that I will address at our next care planning meeting. For the most part, everyone Ive been in contact with has been extremely helpful and pleasant. The only suggestion, at this point, is that it would be nice if the center had an automated phone/text communication with family point of contacts when there is a change in visitation. Recently, there was a change from visitation to no visitation, and then visitation being reinstated. My brother was turned away when trying to visit once. And, on a whim, I called to check on visitation status only to learn that it was reinstated 5 days earlier and just moments after I dropped off and picked up my moms laundry from the lobby.

I have a family member that recently was admitted to this facility. The ceiling is leaking everywhere in multiple areas of the facility. The ac literally never works in multiple areas. The nursing staff is hit or miss patient care wise. Most of the full time staff nurses have been fantastic.... but when those nurses are off... the nurses in their place do the absolute bare minimum. We had an excellent experience with a young blonde nurse during the day... she wasnt even our family members nurse; however, she helped meet our loved ones needs (brought a fresh cup of ice water) and helped guide us to our loved ones room. We had wandered through to the wrong unit accidentally. She listened to our grievances and the grievances were immediately handled anything she was able to. We appreciated that so much. She makes the facility much more pleasant to come to ❤.Back to the building condition...Completely unacceptable. For the amount of money it costs per month for a loved one to stay here there is 0 excuse. The unit was so hot we were unable to stay for the full 1 hr visit. There are brown tiles on the ceiling everywhere.... the unit we wandered into on accident (when we walked too far) also had leaking everywhere from the ceiling. The maintenance issues need to be handled immediately.

Ive been a patient here for rehab for about 2 months. I think everyone that works here is very caring and compassionate. They listen to you and are all very nice. I think at times they are understaffed usually the morning shift therefore you have to wait sometimes but i understand. The food is ok but my family and friends were able to bring snacks and food items for me to eat which was nice. My therapist, Jaime and Kristine were both great! When there is a problem staff are quick to solve it. The rooms are big and spacious private rooms. I would recommend this facility to those needing short term rehab.

Our mother was there for over 3 years....it went from a 4 star facility to a 1 star facility during that time. Our experience was difficult. We filed complaints with the State of Virginia along with other families. They were fined, lost star ratings and the Administrator stepped down as did the Director of Nursing. Then Covid came. When we were able to get back into the building it was terrible. PLEASE what ever you do....learn about the CMS ratings and do a DEEP search before you put your loved one anywhere. They dont answer the phones, they dont keep the room clean...when I moved our mom, the room was FILTHY beside her bedstead. Her fan was caked with an inch of dust and she is a COPD patient with Congestive Heart Failure and NEEDS clean environment. I am so happy to be done with that place. There are several, several other issues I can list....all in pictures, documented citations from the State of Virgina and personal experience. You MAY have a different encounter, but please learn how to judge a facility according to the CMS ratings through the state of VA. A last thing, IF they cannot even keep an elderly, bed-ridden, depressed ladys hair combed properly.....WHY would I trust them with her heart, lungs and mental health??????NO THANK YOU!!!!!

The patience and love given not only to myself, but to other patients was excellent. The highlight of the day were the serving of the meals in the dining room, which I really miss. This is the best place! I promise you there is no better place for rehab or nursing care. Ive been to other places like Lake Taylor and they just cannot compare. We have a resident counsel. Im the president of our resident counsel, and I just love talking to new residents about the facility. The dining hall is big, and everyone can gather to be served hot food. Let me tell you, the food is great! The activities here are outstanding. We have bingo on Saturdays and during the week we do daily crafts, trivia games, balloon volleyball, and go on outings to the mall, zoo, and sometimes we even go fishing. This facility really meets my active lifestyle. Im kept busy and never find myself board. The three girls in activities Shelley, Brandy, and Grace are so incredibly sweet and always go above and beyond to help me and other residents stay active. We even had a pizza party once, and they make sure we go on field trips. The nutritionist has a class every week and she is good about informing us how to eat properly. I really enjoy her class. We have a therapy dog, Meeko, who comes to visit twice a week, and I really love seeing him. I love our psychologist, Dr. Miller. I like him a lot. Our maintenance men Bryan and Cleo see me and help me get back to my room. They are always so helpful. The staff always stops to help me when I need something. Greg, our administrator is the best. This facility has a HORRIBLE nursing staff, especially during the overnight hours. Unfortunately, my mom is there because she needs physical rehabilitation and is currently in the process of getting radiation therapy, next store at Chesapeake General. That is the ONLY reason she remains there and as soon as her radiation therapy is completed we will be taking her home. The nursing staff doesnt NOT properly monitor the distribution of medicine at all. If my family was not with my Mom, from 6:00am -8:00pm everyday, she would be completed over medicated. The nursing staff doesnt appear to record or keep track of what medicines they give my mom or when they give medicine to my mom. During the overnight hours they completely screw up her pain medication so that by morning time she is in complete agony. We have had several discussions with the nursing staff and with several managers and each night they continue to NOT do their jobs. If you care, at all, for your loved one, this is DEFINITELY NOT the place to put them. The physical therapist that work with my mom, twice a day, are awesome and she loves her time spent with them. They do an amazing job working with her and are extremely patient and encouraging. We will continue with her physical therapy from home because we cant get out of this place fast enough.

My mother is relatively new in this facility. We came here in part due to the good reviews we read. We also toured the facility and found it to be clean and the staff friendly. Since arriving, we have had very good nurses and aides (some better than others, but theres always a few!). Therapy is also very good and they take a bit more aggressive approach than some places. The only complaint I have is the food. It is horrible! Tonight it was corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. The picture shows what it looked like. My mother had been telling me it was bad, but I thought maybe the medication she has to take now had altered her taste. I wouldnt feed that to my dog. You need to fire whoever you have in your kitchen.Update-2-10-18. I have spoken with the dietary manager, Josh, regarding this matter. He was very upset that this issue had occurred and is working on getting the problem addressed. He has also spoken with my mother. I realize there are guidelines and restrictions within the medical setting that necessitate the seasoning of foods, and that there isnt an overnight fix to the issue, or the issue of presentation. I also realize that the food being cold or soggy once finally getting to the rooms is most definitely NOT a food service issue. That falls on the staff on each wing. Ive seen the carts come out and sit for 20 minutes before being distributed. So, this place has its issues, but they are open, as they say, to listening to concerns and trying to fix the issues brought to their attention. So Im revising my 3 star review to a 4 star review.3/16/18 Update-The food. My goodness. Im sorry, but it is just awful. I cannot believe that folks think its good. He had his admissions team contact us and helped us get the orthopedist and family physician to provide the paperwork necessary for a private pay admission. This was impressive because we were not able to get the physicians to cooperate. My dad was in this center for a few months until I took him out and took care of him because of the poor care he received. When he was injured there that required him to be hospitalized I didn’t let him go back there. I am a EMS/Firefighter and he was on high level of oxygen and I went there one evening to see him and he wasn’t receiving enough oxygen. So I checked he oxygen saturation and he was at a dangerously low level so I first checked he was connected to oxygen which he was connected to a oxygen tank not a oxygen concentrator. The oxygen tank was empty so I went to find a nurse and the one I found was passing out medication to the patient and I brought it to her attention and she got rude to me and she stated she gave him a take at 7:00 am and it wouldn’t be empty yet. The thing he was on the tank for 11 hours and at the rate he was on the tank would only last 4 hours. So I pulled up the spec for the tank and rate showing her she was wrong and she talked down to me acting like I don’t know what I am talking about. Which I told her I do know what I am talking about and she shut her month and switch him to the concentrator. I got her fired and two days later my dad was injured and at the hospital and he never went into another nursing home again I hired a home care company to take care of him when mom or other family members couldn’t help out. Just be careful where you love ones go to.

A Nightmare and horrific! If you have any care for your loved ones AVOID THIS PLACE! Long story short, my husband and I are caring for his Mother (an 86 year old with dementia, diabetes and other things). She was admitted twice. The first time she was cleared to come home, they transferred her back to the hospital without our knowledge and the staff could not have been any less helpful. We found out from the hospital shes got hepatitis C. Im not blaming CHRC (her rock-n-roll lifestyle caused that). However, Im appalled that CHRC failed to properly protect their staff and other residents from such a contagious illness. THEY NEVER GLOVED UP while caring for her until I mentioned her diagnosis! The nurse looked scared but claimed no knowledge: until low and behold, they read what was written in her chart! They never contacted us (except for $400 a day to hold her room while in the hospital). She has DEMENTIA and lives with us, but some how our names and numbers were omitted while they made her Her own PRIMARY CONTACT?! This place is for profit only. The residents wonder about with nobody watching them. Most of the hand sanitizer stations are empty and never refilled. We are currently going through litigation for all of this and more. Please think long and hard before letting anyone stay there. I pray every day never to end up in such a house of horrors and for those unfortunate enough to be trapped there.

By Anna HDI am/was a resident of this facilityI was a patient at the Chesapeake Health and Rehab for approximately two months earlier this year. I cant say enough good things about the care I received. It was above and beyond any of their job descriptions. In addition to the actual outstanding medical care, it was the kindness, and care, and support, and encouragement provided by everyone on the staff at all levels, even during the middle of the night, and even by staff members who werent even directly working with me but were aware of my challenges with my recovery. There was a constant morale boost which helped to enhance my recovery progression. I will always be greatful for the care I received there which helped me and enabled me to progress in my difficult recovery and return to my life.

My husband will leave this rehab after 93 days next Wednesday. He entered this rehab unable to walk after months in hospitals He actually wants to come back and volunteer here! The food is excellent and you can join your loved one and eat with them healthy food for four dollars. I couldn’t buy the food for that amount!I am a pastor and pastoral counselor and lead Caregiving groups. I researched all the rehabs and found no better than this rehab! I recommend in my Caregiving Group places for people and would certainly recommend this rehab! The minor issues we have had were all addressed by the appropriate staff person or the Administrator Greg.Yanta.The physical therapy and occupational therapy is 7 days a week like advertised! Lifeworks means what they promote on television! If I had to go to a rehab myself I would come here!Georgianna Brabban-Johnson

On December 7, 2015, Mom experienced a life-threatening emergency. She had a rupture of her renal artery. After emergency surgery to repair it, she went into cardiac arrest for 10 minutes. Thankfully God was on her side and she pulled through. Subsequent medical issues soon followed including Pneumonia, Influenza, MRSA, loss of vision in one eye, and the ability to eat (Dysphagia) from being intubated several times. After several weeks in the ICU and unable to walk or eat, it was determined she was ready to be transferred to a rehabilitation center. Unfortunately, her condition only worsened at that facility. The care there was horrendous. Mom was discharged from this facility even though no goals were met and her health had not improved. Within less than 20 hours after being discharged from that facility she was taken by ambulance to the hospital in dire condition. Once again she spent a week in the ICU to be treated for sepsis that nearly killed her. At that time she was transferred to Chesapeake Health and Rehabilitation Center. Perhaps treatment at the sub-standard facility was a blessing in disguise because when she was discharged from Chesapeake Health and Rehab she was an entirely different person. Mom could care for herself and was able to walk. Her general health had improved tremendously. I attribute this to the outstanding care provided by all of the team workers at there facility. They were professionals who cared about their residents. All of moms needs were addressed in a timely and professional manner and I believe she would not have regained her functions without their encouragement and dedication to her care. She was given daily schedules of her rehab the night before so she always knew what to expect the next day. She was also encouraged to participate in scheduled weekly activitys. Chesapeake Health and Rehabilitation has a great environment and I feel is the best such facility in the area. I thank them for all they did for my mother! Happily she is back working in the garden and doing the other things she loves to do.Sincerely,Randal Berry and Family

It was very difficult to put my mom in a nursing facility, but our hands were forced. This facility has more than exceeded my familys expectations. The nurses and CNAs that care for her on a daily basis truly and genuinely care for her well being. I like to specifically shout out Valerie, Shana, Annette, Liz and Cordell, her nursing staff ALL are the BEST but my mom seems to favor Kim and Jamelle. Big shout out to Ms. Betty and Etta at the Registration desk so professional and polite. Kudos to the men that keep those floors shining like glass and those who keep the place smelling fresh. Ms. Wilson is awesome with getting transport for moms appoints and Ms. Wilson and Ms. Johnson in the Business Office are great ladies to work with. Thank you Kitchen/Cooks for making great meals that keeps mom BP and all levels maintained. Finally Shelly does an outstanding job with the recreations for the residents. Overall we are extremely happy. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO!!!

My mother had an emergent procedure, which left her very weak. At first, I was going to take her home for some one on one care. After it took three family members to get her in a chair at the hospital, I knew she needed intensive rehabilitation therapy. This is what she received at Chesapeake Healthcare. My mom did resist at times, but the nurses, assistants, therapists and including the custodians encouraged her and she was able to walk with her rollater very well by the end of her stay. The therapists did not let her resistance impede her progression and kept working with her. She received good wound care also from the nurses and the surgeon was pleased at her follow up appointment. It was such a good feeling to see my mom progress daily and now she is back home again. Thank you all at Chesapeake Healthcare.

The only reason I gave it a one star is so I could leave a review but honestly it should not get any stars. Oh where do I start. I went to check on my family memeber last night and was greeted by him on a bedpan struggling to breathe. My family member had just finished a breathing treatment and was still having problems breathing. I got my family memeber cleaned up and tried to get him comfortable to see if his breathing would improve it did not. I am a nurse so I have full knowledge of what respiratory distress is. When I went to tell the nurse about his shortness of breath I was told he was not like that when I checked on him, and that the doctor had just left. Which I find impossible. If any doctor seem my family struggling to breathe they would have called 911. The nurse came to the room and said well do you want the nursing supervior. I told her that would be great. Once the supervisor got there she like the rest of the staff were literally of no help. So I asked to have my family member sent to the ED that is literally right outside the door. One nurse came in and took his vital signs and kept saying his pulse ox running 90-95 %. The nurse said he is getting oxygen. I replied maam my family memeber is not breathing good at all I do not care what your machine says. I was told by the nursing supervisor that it would take medical transport 30 min to get there but they are usually there with in 15 min. I agreed to wait. However my family members breathing got worse and I asked if 911 could be called because I was worried my family memeber would stop breathing. AFTER 15 - 20 minutes of waiting I asked the nursing supervisor when will the ambulance be here she said they were on their way. Mind you my family member has been struggling to breathe for 30 -45 min now. Finally the paramedic and medical transport arrived at the same time and medical transport decided it was in my family members best interest to be transported by Emergancy services. The paramedic and EMTs all told me this is unacceptable. Once in the ED the doctor told me, my sister and my family member that had I not come in when I did he may not have made it through the night. The paramedic immediately put on a bipap and was taken to the ED. Where my family memeber is now in ICU. So please please please do not put any family member in this place.

My aunt was admitted to Chesapeake Healthcare after having had surgery in RIchmond. She admitted with a poor prognosis but did exceptionally well in therapy. The therapy program is above and beyond anything seen elsewhere. She had been in other centers and I was less than impressed with the total care or the therapy in those other places. The nursing staff were extremely friendly and attentive and went above and beyond to meet her needs and the needs of our family. She enjoyed the food and has very positive things to say about her time at the center. If other family members should have a need for rehab, they will definitely come here!

My mother in law had a recent stay here at Chesapeake healthcare. My wife and cant tell you how pleased we were with the decision to admit her here. The facility was clean, well maintained and friendly. The nursing team took great care in her attending to all of her needs even when she was being a little bossy. The rehab team was tremendous! We had doubts on on well she would recover but they did a fabulous job. I was surprised to find that they did rehab 7 days out of the week which I think really helped her recover to a level we did not expect. Thank you Chesapeake Healthcare!

We have been here 13 and half hours. My husband James has not gotten his pain medication.one nurse said she was going to put in stat. 25 mins later she came in room for something and i asked had she called in. She said she had not. 12 pm I went to front desk. One nurse stated rx have to come from Richmond. Nurse that was to call in stat looked at her like no they dont. I said im getting conflicting stories. Then the nurse that was to call in stat said she saw it hadnt been faxed in. I said well if it hadnt been faxed in, how were you going to call in stat. Then supposedly she called someone. I said if it wasnt called in last night, i want to report her. One of nurses stated not all nurses are trained to admit patients. I said you mean to tell me you have a nurse admitting patients and havent been trained..i said i really want my husband removed from this facility. Then one of nurses claim it was on 12pm truck. I said everyones story is different. I want him away from yall asap!!!!!😡😡😡😡😡

I would rate this facility less than one star if possible. After the facility has responded to my review, no care was given to my relative how it should have and no apology was given for the treatment and neglect of my relative. I highly recommend finding any of rehabilitation center than this one.Well maintained facility but as I sit with my grandmother watching her brother suffer without medication (due to nursing not sending in script and physician deciding not to come in for his tube removal for further hospice care) or restraint from biting himself and pulling out tubes all I think is patient neglect when family is exhausted beyond belief. Nurse visit every 2 hours? More like 1 visit out of the 4 and a half hours I was there (only after begging for help). Expecting to file a lawsuit, but I worry about him before I can worry about that. Beware of the care.
