Went in with dad, last year. Said he needed open heart surgery, with no options. My dad spent 52 days in the hospital, until his death, from massive complications. I spent 49 of those days with him. Dr. Groh spoke to me about 4 or 5 times. While Dr. Groh may have done best he could (if thats his best, who am I to question), the ICU/CCU at Mission hospital was careless and unprofessional. My father came off his vent in a day and was stepped down in quick time. They sent him back to ICU with tachycardia. They replaced his catheter, controlled his rhythm, and stepped him down again. He was returned to ICU due to blood surgery drop, tachycardia, and more. Following catheter replacement, developed klebsiella (sepsis). He actually fought it well, when -7 days following his surgery - the CCU replaced his respirator, despite a DNR on file, not getting permission from his POA, and his being perfectly fine 4 hours prior to replacing it. He stayed on it for 5 days, whereupon Dr. Groh said it would be removed. Then he alluded that he never needed it replaced. His only words to me. I saw Dr. Groh 2 more times, after that. My dad was silently aspirating, had fluid on his lungs, and who knows what else. Dr.Groh promptly expedited transfer of my dad to push my dad to Asheville Specialty, where he was provided with care 100x better than Asheville Memorial. Unfortunately, my dad succumbed to staphylococcus (sepsis) infection, after over a month at the specialty hospital. Dr. Groh did not go to see my dad, across the street at the Specialty hospital, one time. He never reached out, after that. In fact he was trying to get my dad transferred to a nursing center, less than a week prior to his death. My family never heard one word from Dr. Groh or his staff, following his passing. Its evident that its all business, and poor business at that.My dad connected with Dr. Groh through their common alma mater at UVA. He saw a personality and caring in him, due to that. It was wishful thinking and who my dad was. Unfortunately, there is no caring, no personality, and no human factor to Dr. Groh. And his staff obviously are not far behind...

Drs Groh and Abernathy performed valve replacement surgery on a family member three years ago. This family member is doing extremely well; we highly recommend Dr. Groh and his entire heart team.

Dr. Groh is a professional 100% into his work. I felt confident throughput the entire process. He performed a quadruple bypass and replaced my aortic valve. I have had no complications and couldn’t be happier. As far as bedside manners, he is devoted to his work and this is a non-issue.

Mark Groh may not be the most charming, outgoing physician around, but in his ability, dedication, and endurance as a surgeon he is without peer. In a one year period I experienced emergency open heart surgery under his hands, followed by a very complicated operation (also emergency) on my wife. Both were major, life saving operations. I am generally skeptical about the state of modern healthcare, but Dr. Groh is an exception. I have complete confidence in his judgment and abilities.

Dr. Groh took care of my step father up until the time he passed. I have never met such a compassionate man. Thank you for all you did.

We went to Dr Groh and he told my husband he had arthritis in your left shoulder after an xray was taken. He gave him a steroid shot. Pain was still there. My husband requested that a MRI be done. So the Dr ordered an MRI on his shoulder. We went back and he told my husband he had arthritis in the shoulder and released him with a request we had for pain pills which he wrote a prescription for. We ended up getting a 2nd opinion from another doctor who sent him to a rehab evaluation after noticing that the MRI showed a bone spur pinching.... ALWAYS GET a 2nd opinion no matter what you read about Drs!
