Staff and facility are amazing. The place is so clean. Staff was super friendly. My daughter found her fur buddy. The process did take a little bit. All in all about 1-2 hours because of the number of.people. They are very thorough. As ways heartbreaking to see all the animals but they seemed taken care of. We paid $50 for a larger dog which included everything, shots, neuter and microchip. Puppies were $135.

This is where you adopt pets, you have to have a house and all the right legal stuff too, Plus youre paying for the vaccinations and for getting them fixed. So if you dont want an animal that has been fixed you dont get it here. And this brings me to inky...He is the most greatest, Noble, brave, honorable, and hungry, and stinky sometimes, he also is wild and crazy and he runs after girls because he likes the ladies. He also barks a lot at night and chases possums and even chased the skunk. So now he smells like a skunk..This is the end of the beginning, that is the epic of inky..Oh yeah this place is great you should go there !5 STARS

Please do more work with rescue groups to get these dogs out of here instead of euthanizing them for space immediately. Im under the impression that if your animal is surrendered here, they are considered a dead dog walking. Not to mention the ones coming in from off the street. Good luck, strays!! :(

I adopted these two lovely animals from this wonderful shelter. They are both beautiful dogs and well mannered. Both of them get along fairly well with each other and with my other dog too! The staff are clearly passionate about their jobs and take the time to socialize the dogs in which they house. These two babies have already adjusted to their new home and are open to receiving + providing a lot of affection ❀ Theres so many other dogs and cats at the humane society that are deserving of a furever home, youre guaranteed to find an animal youll absolutely fall in love with.

Grounds were very well maintained and kennels were impressively clean. Everyone was super friendly and knowledgeable. Whole process took about an hour and we were able to take our new family member home the same day!! Thanks for you San Antonio Humane Society!!!

Absolutely horrible operation. I have attempted to reach out to the operations director for a week with no response. If this is the standard the leadership sets, it’s a sad state as the workers will follow his lead. I have to wonder about the treatment of the animals. How much neglect is going on. Makes me wonder. If they cannot return a simple phone call, can they be trusted to feed and care for the animals? I doubt it. Sad.

The new building is very nice, very clean but as I sit in the building, I keep hearing the door slam. In the intake area, by exam room F116, there is a short hallway with a door that leads further into the building. The staff go in and out very frequently, and each time, that door closes with a very loud noise. That door needs a different closing mechanism, one that lets it close silently (or at least a lot more quietly than how it closes now). Apparently some cats were not accepted for adoption due to being too stressed out. That horridly loud door closing would stress out anyone. Please see about getting a different door closer. Other than that, it is a very lovely building and yall do great work helping cats and dogs here in San Antonio.

I found a dog at my office and brought him here but unfortunately they had too much going on just to do a check up and give him a clean bill of health they instead wanted us to surrender him in lieu of just doing a checkup.. I didnt surrender him because we had planned on keeping him if we couldnt find the owners. Im glad the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They also assisted us in trying to find local vets that could get him that day but unfortunately all the vets we called had a two week wait unless it was an emergency.

We have a very playful pup that was in need of a friend that could keep up with her energy. We found the perfect match here at the SAHS. They have implemented seamless processes to allow adoptions to proceed as safely as possible with new covid protocols. We were able to spend time with our boy, schedule a meet & greet for the pups, and finalize a contactless adoption. Although much of his background is unknown, I appreciate the medical history they were able to provide me. They certainly took care of him in his time there. Thank you SAHS for the perfect addition to our family!

I’ve been trying to surrender my cat for the past 2 weeks now because my new baby is allergic to him. I went to this humane society to start the process and you can’t even walk into the building no one even comes to the door. I called the number they provided on the door for surrenders and spoke to someone over the phone. The woman I spoke to said that the earliest I could get in was a week later basically but I had to email them. I was fine to wait up to 2 weeks max and she told me it should be done by then. I emailed and they responded that it was going to take 6-8 weeks to start the actual process. That is absolutely ridiculous to have to wait that long for a cat a pet under 40 pounds

Was dropping off a huge bag of many used bed sheets on (Tues. 6/15/21) There is a big blue laundry bin outside the main entrance with a sign (didnt notice!) where someone can leave their donations like those items, food, etc. Special shout out to the SAPD officer on duty who answered my questions on donation drop off. Not his job but he was nice enough to help me as everyone was busy that day and it was totally chaotic. I did call before hand to see if someone would answer my questions before driving over but I got the answering machine, and I saw why when I got there. I did leave a message and callback #. Funny thing was 3 hours later someone returned my voicemail. So I appreciate all the hardworking volunteers and employees there. Great job! Shop! Dont adopt! This place is terrible! They want to give animals a good home but turn away the most loving individuals! If youre going to try to adopt an animal BE SURE TO GO ALONE any more than one person with you will BE CONSIDERED A PARTY AND WILL BE DENIED UPON ONE INDIVIDUAL BEING DENIED!!!! They dont care about the animals and making sure they get a loving home they just care about the money! They let you and the animal get attachted just to turn you away! Do you know what its like to spend hours with an animal and yall get attachted just to walk away! The dog literally cried because i had to leave it! They dont care though! Theres a reason so many people actually shop and dont adopt its because of the ridiculous process they put you through just to let you down! I will never attempt to adopt another animal again! Theyre totally okay with giving dogs to terrible homes and to people who dont actually care and will eventually just give them back because the animal was too much! But to the people who actually care about an animals well being, theyll turn away in a heart beat esp. Bc they walked in with someone when they live at two different residences! Ridiculous! Never again!

I adopted this very very handsome, affectionate 80 lb dog from this shelter a couple of days ago. He’s an awesome dog but he’s absolutely horrified of stairs and I live on the third floor. I’ve done a great deal of research online for this issue and have spent hours patiently trying to get him up to walk up my stairs and have spent hours with walking him up and down much smaller stair sets in my apartment with absolutely no progress. I’ve been having to carry him up the entire way and just in the last couple days my back has been killing me due to my scoliosis. I tried to go up to the shelter to return him yesterday but they told me that I’d have to call to schedule an appointment and that there would be none available until possibly sometime next week. I need help with this horrible situation as soon as possible.Edit: I’ve been meaning to edit this review sooner. About a week after leaving this review my uncle agreed to keep him and we both love him a lot, so it worked out. If you’re looking to adopt a big dog and live on the third floor and have bad back issues, make sure that the dog you adopt isn’t horrified of stairs/heights.

Not often do you run into people like the ones that run this particular location on 410 and Fredericksburg. They collected donations not only to feed the animals sheltered at the location, but also distributed them to other areas of Texas affected by the floods and devastation of Harvey. They loaded up my truck and trailer with the help of Air Force and Navy volunteers on Tuesday of this week to send to Houston and then on Wednesday those same workers and volunteers helped to load a friends 54 semi that he drove to Rockport! Thousands of pounds of dog food, cat food, litter, bedding, medicine and cleaning supplies were sent directly to places in need!! I will support this organization as long and as much as I possibly can!!

The San Antonio humane society made me document any pets that had died within the past year before I could adopt another pet, so I was honest and documented that two loves of my life died within a year of each other due to completely unpredictable ailments that ultimately resulted in their untimely deaths (one from necrosis of his intestines as a result of a trauma that happened before I adopted him, and the other from just pure bad luck of the draw with chronic kidney disease that may or may not have been from an infection he got as a kitten before we adopted him). I had to sit there and explain that I wasnt ACTUALLY a bad mom...I just had babies who were dealt a bad hand at life, I lost them far too soon, and I wouldnt be adopting a new baby if it werent for the fact that I lost my two sweethearts so soon.I understand the need to filter adoptive pet parents, but that was next-level humiliating and unnecessarily devastating. Maybe this is something yall can work on? I just dont want grieving parents to have to talk about how they lost their babies when they werent ready to lose them. I did everything I could for them, but it was never going to be enough...they just didnt get lucky in life. It was a terrible experience for me, and Id hate for someone else to have to sit there and explain that their babys death was completely out of their control.

My husband adopted our first rescue pet from SA Humane back in August 2017. Her shelter name was Tina, but we decided the name Joanie suited her a little more. The day she was rescued will always hold significance to us because since that day, she has brought so much joy to our hearts. She is just so loving and sweet. I still remember coming home from a long day at work and seeing her cute little face on the couch for the first time, it was truly the best surprise ever! She was already a grown dog when we got her but it didn’t take her long to adjust to her new lifestyle. At first she was distant and confused but now she will not leave our side and is the best cuddle buddy ever! Prior to having her, I visited SA Humane a couple of times since we lived close by. The staff was very helpful and kind and the place was overall extremely welcoming. My husband told me as soon as he saw Joanie he knew she was the one for us and that the adoption process went smoothly. We will always be forever grateful to SA Humane for taking in Joanie and helping her to find her forever home.
