John is an amazing! I have been doing strength and conditioning at Combat Arts for 4 years now. I have been to a number of gyms before and John is by far the best coach I have ever trained with. My strength has constantly gone up, I’ve been injury free, and in fact John has helped heal and strengthen some of my previous injuries. His programming is varied, challenging, and always with an eye towards safety. I leave every class exhausted. I highly recommend Combat Arts.

I dropped in a couple times while I was in town for work. John and his students were very welcoming and I felt comfortable training almost immediately. The facilities are clean with good hygiene protocols. The instruction was well presented and followed an easy to understand building block approach, I thoroughly enjoyed the classes. Everyone I rolled with was respectable the rolls were great! I highly recommend this place to train and will definitely be coming back whenever I am in town, great place to train BJJ!

A really great place to learn and train. Me and my wife both go here as well as my 7 year old twins. There is a mix boys and girls of all ages and makes for pairing of sizes easy. The adult class is the same mix of many men and women of all sizes. John Mckean is very professional, respectable, and very patient with his students. Likewise everyone else in the class is very friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome from day one. We look forward to our mat time at the Grapple Chapel every week!

Having moved here from out of state, I was concerned about being able to find a gym and jiu jitsu school that I would be comfortable at. After being recommended by a friend, I have now been training here for almost a year and it has become like a second home to me. The positive, challenging environment that John has created, has me counting down the time until I get to train every day.

John’s instruction in BJJ is unparalleled. His experience and immense knowledge of the sport manifests through his teaching. I am relatively new to the gym and couldn’t have asked for a more welcoming, comfortable, and enjoyable environment. John has succeeded in creating a strong sense of community both inside and outside of the gym. I would highly recommend Combat Arts to anyone with even the slightest interest in Jiu Jitsu.

Whether you’re an experienced grappler or just beginning, Combat Arts is a great place to be. The instruction from Professor John McKean is clear, realistic and full of his own personal experience. Due to John’s character he has built a great community within the gym. I’m confident everyone coming in with a good attitude and dedication will find lifelong friends as well as newfound grappling abilities. Having trained at 3 gyms I’d absolutely recommend Combat Arts over all of my past experiences.

Excellent startup fitness and jiujitsu gym in a cool downtown location. John is an alum of Gym Jones and creates tough, personalized, all-body workouts (kinda like crosssfit, but without the free weights). IMO, Johns knowledge of BJJ/MMA is unmatched in SLC.

This is a cool BJJ gym downtown that is just getting going. John, the head instructor & founder, is a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu and a former MMA fighter. He teaches self defense & his strength training workouts are killer and not for the weak.. hes an encyclopedia of BJJ information and mixes things up with boxing and outdoor workouts too.
