I have never felt so frustrated in my life. My father is currently fighting for his life and was transported to the U of U hospital. From the very moment he arrived the experience has been far from impressive. The staff is the absolute worst. They wouldnt let any of our family in, so naturally we had to call for updates. We have spent countless hours on hold every day before they would give an update and then act like we are putting them out because we are asking questions. They have hung up the phone on my mom and brother, they have told us we are wasting their time (literally out if the mouth of a charge nurse), they have made mistakes that could have cost my dad his life. They have been derogatory and disrespectful. Their communication has been lacking leaving us all feeling more afraid and more helpless than we already feel. Please do not allow you loved ones to go to this hospital. Certainly not their ICU.. As I sifted through the other reviews I was not surprised to see so many negative reviews in regards to their staff. They have no heart and no patience for scared families.

I would give less stars as I had a horrible experience in the OB ER and was left in pain for hours and basically thrown to the side because other patients were more of a priority even though my sons heart rate was dropping with my contractions. BUT I want to give five stars because of a nurse named Cassie in labor and delivery. I was an absolute mess once I was moved from OB ER, I had been in pain for hours begging for some sort of relief but no one would come to my room when I hit the button or I kept getting told my room was not ready until my water broke as I had quickly dilated in the couple hours I was there and my husband had to hit the button yet again begging for someone to help. Cassie swooped in and treated me so kindly as soon as I got to my room. She walked me through my contractions so I could get an epidural safely and held my hands the whole way through. I have never had someone show so much compassion and empathy before, especially in a healthcare setting. I hope she gets a raise because she’s absolutely the type of person you need your hospital filled with. To have the horrible experience I did and one person to turn it around is a big deal. I still have to deal with the trauma of being forgotten and the hours of severe pain I had to work through but having Cassie there when I needed someone the most meant a lot to me as I don’t have any family here. So thank you to Cassie, and also to Kelcie and one other nurse who’s name I cannot remember who took over for her once she had to step away to help another patient. Both fantastic and caring people as well. Labor and delivery seems to have chosen its nurses well unlike other areas.

My contact with the U began with a horrible truck roll over accident that almost killed my boyfriend. After a life flight from Wyoming, He was treated in neurology critical care for 2 weeks while experiencing a Glasgow Coma. His chances of survival werent sugar coated and I still felt that he had the best care available. Upon waking, he was transferred to the Craig Neilson Rehabilitation hospital for 2 more weeks while allowing me to literally live in the hospital with him so I could learn to administer his care. Then 9 months of out patient clinical care. He has survived the unsurvivable thanks to these doctors, nurses and aides. These doctors are superior and choose to practice their specialty where we live. Such a blessing. After reading all of these complaints about the emergency room department, perhaps remember that the ER is NOT clinic care. If youre not experiencing a true emergency, you might cost a real person their life. Schedule yourself an appointment with the clinics. Talk to their billing department. Be grateful for your resources and use them properly. And get vaccination to protect those who care for us!!!

I took my little sister with asthma here when she was having a hard time breathing. The nurses told her to wait outside because her cough might have been COVID. They said it would be a 30 minute wait. It was two hours. I went in and asked the nurses. They made excuses and said it was taking long because they were trying to make a room for her. Just wish they could’ve told us around 30 min of waiting that it would be longer. There were five nurses around the computer when they told me. I asked for an time estimate and they said they couldn’t give me one. I asked if it was the right thing to do to send someone who’s having a hard time breathing back outside to the smoggy air ans they said legally they can’t confirm or deny that. Don’t go here unless the hospital or ambulance drags you here.

I chose U of U hospital to get my wisdom teeth surgery and I regret it significantly. It is supposed to be the best hospital to do this kind of procedure, but turned out to be the opposite. I had my wisdom teeth taken out, and the doctors said “everything went well” ,but after 4 days or so the feeling on the left side of my lip and chin did not come back. I was lead to believe it was nerve damage. I called the doctor right away and he said, “we should probably see you soon, speak with the front desk”. When I called the front desk the only appointment available was a month away. Even though I had a compilation from the surgery they preformed there was nothing available sooner. First of all no communication between the doctor and the front desk what so ever. It took 4 separate calls each time being put on hold for extended periods to finally get appointment that was one sooner. When I showed up for the appointment I had to wait 30 minutes to just to be seen, but the doctor who performed my surgery didn’t even have the courtesy to see me personally. Nurses said that “he was running late”. The doctor who took a look didn’t even know what he was looking at. Which makes sense, since it was his first time seeing me. I had to repeat myself 5 times for him to understand and prescribe pills to numb the sharp pain I have due to this nerve damage. I felt like they were not listening, or not even concerned about my pain, or the nerve damage the caused. The only thing they would say is they covered the possible complications before hand. And what I was eventually told is, if it’s tingling it’s a good sign. I was not given any more information than what is in the internet. Really disappointed in the hospital, doctors, and the front desk. Significantly better care could be provide after these kinds of complicated procedures.

I had to go to the ER for my severe stomach pain. In order to determine what I have, I had to return a stool sample. I got sent home with just the tubes, no labels were given to me and I had to ask for my own hat. I didn’t receive any instructions on how to store my stool samples. While in the ER, I didn’t get hooked back up to my IV and I was very dehydrated, which I’m sure I’ll get charged for and I didn’t even receive the whole thing. I start a new job tomorrow and I’m still very ill. Now I have to redo all my stool samples because I wasn’t given instructions on the first place. This is one of the worst experiences I have had. I also have to wait longer now to find out my results and I’m in severe pain.

Two words: balance billing. When I broke my leg, I went to U of U Hospital not knowing that they were not in my insurance network. My insurance worked with me since it was an emergency situation. The problem was with the U of U. If youre not familiar with balance billing, its when a health care provider charges more than what your health insurance company determines is a reasonable charge. It doesnt count toward your health care deductible or your max out of pocket through insurance. Its illegal in a lot of states, but not in Utah. Not every hospital will charge it, as it negatively affects those of us responsible enough to have insurance and put money aside for deductibles, but U of U aggressively pursues balance billing. In my case, they were charging more than double what my insurance company indicated was a reasonable charge, to the tune of thousands of dollars. Theyll just charge whatever they want and will back that up with letters from the Utah Attorney General and a threat of state tax liens.I graduated from the U. While I will always cheer for my beloved Utes, I wont ever give a penny to the U of U. You cant treat your alumni like that and then ask for more money. And I realize our healthcare system is broken. Those who can pay through insurance pay inflated prices to cover the people who cant pay (but dont call it socialized medicine). But any health care provider that practices balance billing is absolutely part of the problem.

I am currently sitting in the ER waiting room with my husband whos Dr asked him to be admitted and we have waited so far 5 and a half hours....just to be seen. They are not considerate of any pain he is feeling, he possibly will lose his leg because of this....and I also cleaned up a GIANT dead cockroach from their floor. I had much higher expectations of this supposed top rated hospital. 5 and a half hours in the waiting room is absolutely unacceptable.

Dont go to the ER unless you know for 100% sure your dying its a waste of time and money and they will just send you packing after 6 hours with just a referral to some other kind of doctor. They dont care about you they are just trying to clear beds as soon as possible for people who need immediate care there not there to find out whats wrong with you just to check to see if your close to dying or losing a limb. Better to stay home until your dying then let them try to figure out of what instead of trying to be proactive and find out before its that bad.

If you like being treated as just another number and are someone who doesnt need information about your medical condition, and you dont mind waiting in a freezing cold room for over 9 hours, then this is the place for you. My paralyzed husband was sent to the U of U emergency department by his doctor after experiencing stomach pain following a medical procedure. After 8 hours on a hard bed we finally had to ask that my husband be rotated so he wouldnt develop pressure sores. After 9 hours we were informed that he was being admitted. Still no explanation as to what was going to be his treatment. Or when any kind of care would happen. Its 10 hours later and still no update on what to expect. Wish I could take him somewhere else immediately.I have called your customer service and talked to someone over 24 hours ago and even though I was assured I would hear back from them, they havent called me back either. We will not be using your services in the future. No one advocates for the patient. The nurses were great and tried to get us information, but any department he was sent to did not give us much information of what was happening, going to happen or why.

On Sept 10, 2021, I visited University of Utah General Hospital Laboratory to have a blood draw for a required test my doctor prescribed. When the phlebotomist came to draw my blood, I specifically told her that she needed to use a butterfly needle for the blood draw, because I have very small veins. I have my blood drawn every 3 months and for the last fifteen years this is the only way that I can have blood drawn without blowing out my vein.Despite my request of the phlebotomist, she refused to use a butterfly and instead told me she knew how best to draw my blood. So I politely asked her again to please use a butterfly needle, she reluctantly and very aggressively used a butterfly, but she made it clear she didn’t like me asking her to use the butterfly. After sticking me with the butterfly and starting to draw blood, the phlebotomist began tapping strongly, approximately 30 times I’m guessing, on the needle and the butterfly. I have no idea why she was doing this, but it caused me great pain and resulted in my vein being blowing out with severe bruising in the area of the blood draw, approximately 3 inches in diameter. See attached photo.I’m very disappointed that this staff member is working at the UofU, this kind of behavior, disrespect and personal injury makes me never want to visit this laboratory again. As a customer and a patient, I expect to have requirements met in a safe and efficient manner, that didn’t happen!!.

Everyone that is anywhere near you can hear. I myself do not feel comfortable being treated in the hallway. Also I am always waiting a minimum of 2 hours to be seen every time. I was also bumped by a staff member pushing a wheelchair while in the waiting room. They bumped the leg that was super sore and the reason I was in the Er to begin with. If I could give 0 stars I would. Oh ya and to get even better I was placed in the hall right next to the soiled utility room. Eww gross….Update: After sitting in the ER for 13 hours I finally got my ct scan done and have been waiting on those results for 2 and a half hours after they told me about an hour. They won’t let me eat and I haven’t had anything to eat in 21 hours. They never give any kind of updates either.

I highly recommend birthing at home with a mid wife, I felt like an experiment in this hospital. Students coming in and out of my room asking questions, 10 different doctors in my room while I gave birth, No privacy, completely ignored about my birth plan, nurses were impersonal and should not be practicing if you have no connection with newborns, never let you sleep or rest with countless visits from random employees bothering you all day and night! . I hated every minute of my stay there, they say they are a baby friendly hospital but that is a lie! I had my son 1 minute before they tried to cut the cord and take him from me when I specifically said to my doctor I want the first 3 hours with him with no tests which she agreed to but all that changed, they told me no! I will never give birth in a hospital again. So impersonal, that your baby like a number not a person, how do these people live with themselves, no heart, no love for babies, this place was awful. Go to a mid wife! They care about the environment your child is brought into. Hospitals do nothing but terrorize your newborn.

I had be transferred from the south Jordan ER to the main hospital for appendicitis and needed emergency surgery. I got there by ambulance about 9:15ish at night and they told me because of their policies my husband wouldnt be allowed to stay with me and that visit hours were from 9-9 even it being my first time ever to stay a night and having emergency surgery. He brought me some things and was there until midnight and I was still waiting to go back for surgery at that time. The charge nurse Victoria came in after he got me to calm down and asleep because I was scared and in pain and she was so loud and rude and kicked him out and told him if he didnt leave she would have security come escort him out of the building and said he could sleep in his truck. Who does that. It wasnt like he was walking around the hospital being disruptive he was by my side comforting me. The charge nurse Victoria followed him all the way down stairs to the main floor and then went back. Even the security guards at the front doors said that was messed up. I was having surgery my husband should have been able to stay. And I understand with covid and everything but I seen other patients there with their spouse staying with them. And then 30 minutes after he left they came and got me for surgery the anesthesiologist asked why I was all alone and who was my emergency contact. I told him that it was my husband and that he was here but the charge nurse had kicked him out. Even the anesthesiologist thought that was messed up as well. And then they wouldnt let him back in until 9 am that coming morning. My husband asked if she would call him with an update when I got out of surgery and she never did. I just feel like the whole situation couldve been handled better and I didnt see the issue of him staying with me in my room!

This has been the single worst, most awful, and amoral organization I have ever worked with in my entire life. Since my surgery in 2018, I have been in near constant battle with them over insurance payments and medical records. After my insurance company paid for my surgery, they told us repeatedly how the surgery was not paid for and continued to take my income tax return which I still have not been reimbursed for. Now, years later I am requesting my medical records which has been yet another awful experience. I have to call in at least three times for them to pick up the phone (during business hours mind you) and when I do finally get someone on the phone, they are extremely apathetic and wont do anything without constant pestering. I have now requested medical records three separate times and they continue to withhold sections of them. Hopefully this nightmare is over soon.

I made the decision that I was not going to be extorted, and they escalated this to the point of sending it to an attorney. I am currently fighting this through collections, and the courts. Ive never been treated so abominably by a medical facility. I drove 7 hours round trip and spent $200 on gasoline to get to an appointment in rheumatology, for the sole purpose of feeding the doctors ego. The first thing he did when he came into the room was thank me for getting an MRI and said that the results were normal. Didnt show me the MRI, just thanked me for proving him right. When I became frustrated and emotional, he got defensive and yelled at me. This is concerning on so many levels. A doctor should have the interpersonal skills required to de-escalate a patient, who is in physical PAIN, when the patient becomes emotional. He should not be a doctor if his biggest priority is being right, over the patients wellbeing. The conversation ended with him telling me there was nothing he would do for me and I needed to see a doctor in my hometown for what he thinks is fibromyalgia, not an arthritis flare. I walked out of the room at that point. Dr. Penmetsa, using the term doctor loosely, is an egotistical, selfish person. It is dangerous for him to see any more patients without proper training in de-escalating emotional situations. This should never have happened. The entire conversation could have been done over the phone, but he had to tell me in person that he was right and I was wrong.

If I could truly sum up into words what I feel about this hospital and the hell they have and are putting me through, I would, but I dont know how. This hospitals failure to properly and timely communicate with my insurance to resolve a bill has ultimately resulted in the process of me apparently getting sued. The moment this typical corrupt business sent me a bill, I immediately forwarded it to my insurance to have them take care of it. So how is it something like that can end up with Express Recovery and then with Edwin B. Perry because of THEIR failure? Not once did I receive a call in connection to any of this until it made it to Express Recovery, all in the mean time I thought I was doing what I needed to do by keeping my insurance up to date with the bills? All this insanity started all while trying to cope with my fathers death, totaling my car which could have killed either my wife, my dog that I adopted to help cope, or both, but Im wishing it had claimed mine at this point. Its crazy how little these companies and corporations care about people that are as little as a grain of sand in all of existence and the money they have. Its insane how much greed and corruption controls stuff and how it can easily screw someones life and cause astronomical levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Lets also not forget that weve had a pandemic this entire time, jobs have been sparse, growth and options have been sparse, etc. These kinds of business, hospitals, collection agencies, corrupt attorneys offices are all plagued with pure greed and corruption and theyre so far disconnected from the regular person and lack any sense of a moral compass that would allow them to understand how wrong this is and what it does to people.Let me also add, as far as I know at this point, USAA has paid the hospital quite a sum of money, so they WILLINGLY took(stole) money from my insurance, while Im just now coming to find out and better understand whats going on with this Edwin B. Perry. Let that sink in for a moment. They forwarded a bill over to an agency to sue me, while still taking money from my insurance.

Worst experience from security to comfort staff. My dad has been a patient at the U for at least 38 years. He had a heart transplant 36 years ago. About a month ago his heart began to fail. He was inpatient after the doctors placed a pacemaker. We came to visit on a Sunday, as we had everyday since he was admitted. The security guard stopped my husband and said we needed to stop at the front desk. When we went back we were told my 16 year old who had been with me every other day could not visit his grandpa. He ended up having to stay in the lobby. When I was leaving my dads room to check on my son, 2 security guards walked past me and I heard them say my dads room number. I called my husband to tell him drama may be headed his way and he said he was leaving so not to disturb my parents. The guards were at the nursing station saying have you seen a mexican up here? We are going to excort him out. When I got downstairs to the lobby, they had not allowed my sister up to visit with my dad and told them they had to leave the hospital, saying youre family has been here too long. You need to leave. I didnt want to think it had anything to do with race but after the mexican comment how can I think it was anything else?Flash forward about a month. My dad is now in hospice or comfort care. We were not allowed to visit my dad as a complete family we had to keep switching members out of the room so we all got time. If we left the hospital to rest in the car, we were hastled by security when trying to return, even though we all name badges showing we obviously had already been there. The staff told us they would handle contacting the funeral home. Almost 24 hours after he died, the funeral home had not been contacted. It seems like they dont care about the patients or families experiences. Its sad because before this I would have given a 5 star rating, they are not as amazing as I thought. I would never recommend this hospital based on the staff.

I feel they saved his life. Thanks for the attention to detail and for your encouragement. My dad and our family will always be grateful for the heroes you all are.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the University of Utah Hospital especially their cardiology unit and surgical teams. My Dad had whats called a Type A Aortic Dissection, he was life Flighted at roughly 11:30pm from Wyoming, arrived around 12:30am with a surgical team read and performed a 9+ hour open heart surgery. Though my Dad is still in the ICU I will be forever grateful to this Hospital and to the Doctors who saved his life and continue to work him daily.

Horrible ER at this hospital. I had 8 weeks of double nose bleeds that lasted 4-6 hours daily. I called my family doctor who told me to get to the ER immediately as this was not normal. I told him I would go to the Instant-Care close to my home, but he suggested I go to the hospital ER instead. The ER doctor I saw couldnt have cared less, his first question to me was why didnt you just go to Instant-Care? So I told him my doctor advised me not to and to get to the ER. The ER doctor didnt listen to me. I tried to tell him they werent normal nose bleeds and were like an artery gushing. The doctor told me to put pressure on my nose when it bleeds (like I didnt know that?) The ER doctor didnt look up my nose, didnt run a test, nothing!! I made an appt to see a ENT a week later as this was a serious daily nose bleed. This ENT doctor ordered an ultrasound, then a week later a CAT scan. Turns out I had a severe infection, no oxygen flow on one side due to overgrown bloody membranes, and boney spurs in my nose that contacted with the membranes that caused the daily nose bleeds. Turns out it was a very serious issue and I have to have nose surgery. The ENT doctor cauterized my nose to stop the bleeding, to get it ready for surgery. The ER doctor didnt catch any of that, no tests- nothing, he just sent me home with a plastic nose plug and a 3000.00 bill. I told the hospital I was disputing my bill. They told me the situation was looked into and they have determined that the ER doctor met their standards. Hmm... what standards? No test was done, nothing!! Glad I saw the ENT doctor a week later who actually cared and listened and found the problem. I would rate the ER doctor a -0 no-star if I could. Horrible ER doctor, and apparently their standards are not very high.

The U of U healthcare network is the classic story of CORRUPTION in the US healthcare industry. From hidden and undiscussed fees to overbilling, to lying to patients about their health (including hiding test results, gaslighting, etc), in the hopes of referring them elsewhere in network to collect more money, this company has been shamelessly taking advantage of the sick for years.Do not take negative reviews written here with a grain of salt; they are very informative concerning how frequently this provider takes advantage of people and how they will treat you.

I’ve been trying to see an Infectious Disease doctor for over a month and my requests keep getting denied. My doctor sent the referral and explained how bad my situation is and all I get is a call back from a nurse practitioner saying I do not have an active infection. First. I have a very active Lyme disease infection. Second, I have a very serious skin infection, and the nurse practitioner, without ever even seeing my skin, insinuates that I go see a dermatologist so they can make sure “I am not doing that to my skin myself” absolutely insulting being told that I could harm myself like that.. especially when they didn’t even see my skin. As much as I dread sharing photos of my skin, I will add them to this review because people need to know how bad this place is! Also, whoever the infectious a disease Doctor that denied my request to see a specialist is, please, find a new career, because if you don’t think that something eating 3 inch holes into my skin is not an active infection serious enough for me to see a doctor then you really need to reconsider being a doctor!

Much is left to be desired at this so called state of the art medical facility. I’ve had experiences here that are not only unprofessional, but downright violating. There was the gynecologist who dropped equipment onto the floor during a personal exam and proceeded to pick it up to continue had I not stopped her. Then, there is another specialist who took my medical records and threw them on the floor. There was also the time I was getting blood work done and was simply forgotten about in an abandoned waiting room along an obscure hallway for hours. Finally, there was the scary and intimidating attack from a male doctor after I filed a general complaint about my overall negative experiences here. This doctor told me I had no right to complain and that I only did it to rat out his friends. He tried to force me to say that I lied about my experiences and insinuated that I was crazy and needed to have my husband with me at appointments to control me.It is deeply saddening that in my experiences here, doctors appear to pick and choose who to treat, neglecting their professional responsibility to serve the entire community with quality of care.

I live on the total opposite side of town. Its easily an hour drive. I had a virtual appointment with someone here who insisted (gave me no other options) that I come all the way to the main hospital because of concerns for my high risk pregnancy. She said it was vital that I go here to get the best quality ultrasound. Well, this is my 7th pregnancy (4rd high risk pregnancy) and this was without a doubt, the lowest quality ultrasound I have ever had. I have had better ultrasounds at fetal studios that have no medical purpose. The ultrasound tech was beyond unprofessional and didnt get half of what she needed to, so I have to have a follow up ultrasound anyways, but it certainly wont be here. She did not even do 3D at all, knowing that looking at facial features was on the list of things that needed to be looked at extremely carefully. I was told about possible complications in this pregnancy a few months ago and was looking forward to having answers, but since the ultrasound was done so poorly, all I have is more I dont know and am forced to wait another 6 weeks for another ultrasound. Im extremely disappointed and frustrated.

More concerned about enforcing unsupported Covid rules than providing health care.My son, his injured and pregnant wife and our family had a horrible experience at the U of U hospital. We experienced unethical treatment. Our young daughter-in-law, 20wks pregnant, was in a bad car accident. Pelvis broken in 3 places and cracked vertebrae but alive and OK, baby OK. She was transferred from Cache Valley to U of U hospital, they had an orthopedic, pelvic specialist she needed. Nurses had to heavily advocate to allow my son, her husband, to go into the hospital with her. No other family members were allowed, even those that had been vaccinated. She was drugged and very anxious, not able to make here own decisions. They both had proof they had had Covid, this did not matter. They experience disorganized, care the first 30 hours. Mother went without food for 24 hours while decisions were made. My son, without any support, had to constantly remind, advocate and ensure she and the baby had proper and correct care during a high stress, traumatic time, thank heaven he was there to do so. This was care they were paying for. The hospital did spend 2 hours going over payment and insurance information during that time.Staff agreed to allow her mother to visit, allowing my exhausted son small breaks. Her mothers covid vaccination did not matter to hospital policy. We could only visit our young, exhausted son outside the hospital to give support, food, love, advice at a time he desperately needed it.On day two permission was given for the mother-in-law to visit the hospital room. One mother left so another could be in the room. Within 5 minutes a security guard opened the door and demanded the room number. Four security guards returned and told the mother-in-law to leave because she was violating policy even though the front dest had approved the visit.(turns out, they approved the visit but called security anyway) They were very confrontational. My wife hugged and kissed the patient and our son, not wishing to cause them any trauma and obediently left followed by five security guards. She was escorted to the elevator. The patients mother, waiting at the elevators, was expected to leave the floor also and told she was being sneaky. As she entered the elevator a security guard told her she would not be allowed to she her daughter again. (illegal). Later, I learned the security guard had reentered the room and told my son, the patients husband he would have to leave also. My son was so distraught he had a breakdown, which nurses witnessed. Hospital security was confrontational and aggressive, why would they act that way to law abiding, honest mothers who sought approval to visit. The following day the patient had a major medical setback and my son struggled to even function. The disrespectful treatment by the hospital staff had caused this setback. At a time of great distress and trauman the hospital, which they were paying for, had provided poor care, excluded support options and furthered the injury by treating them badly. We stayed away from our son and daughter-in-law during his time of need because the hospital intimidated us.The next day the patients mother returned with legal council. This quickly lead to a visit from the director where the mother demanded apologies to all involved. She was then ensured she could visit. How many families has this happened to recently?Health care is a human right. Yet, it seems we are expect to give up all rights and supports to be allowed into a hospital in a time of illness and injury. Nobody should require legal council to visit a child in the hospital, ever. This is not about keeping people safe from covid or policy based on sound science. This is unethical and wrong. Shame on you U of U hospital for disrespecting people. I will encourage everyone to stay away from your hospital.

One star for the customer service people they direct you to. Someone in upper management needs to wake up and monitor this department. Not only did they miscommunicate and misinterpret the issue I had but “forgot” to follow through and failed to tell the billing department to hold billing while the issue was being researched. Nor did they respond to emails. You get better customer service at McDonalds. Really frustrating.
