I went to see Dr McCance in September of 2021. I had scheduled this appointment over a month in advance. When I scheduled over the phone, the lady took my insurance information. I was told that my insurance would cover it. I was not asked for payment the day of my appointment. I get a letter in the mail less then a month after for a charge of $500. When I called to ask, the billing associate, Angie, was very disrespectful. She threatened to send me to collections in less than 7 days, which I am aware is illegal because they must send 3 notices before sending you to collections. Dr.McCance sat down with me for about 5 minutes to tell me he couldn’t do anything for me, but boy, do they want their money right away! I’m just glad I was able to pay & get them off my back. Very disappointed with not only one of the “best spine surgeons in America,” but his staff as well.

I am an attorney in my 30s. I only mention that here because people seem to think that gives me more credibility. I fell when I was 14 and have lived with two herniated disc’s (L4/L5) for more than half my life. I found Dr. McCance based on his reviews.I immediately scheduled surgery because I knew I would be too scared to follow through if I thought it through. Back surgery terrified me and I cried every day for the two weeks leading up to the surgery. I actually canceled the surgery in June before finally following through in July 2021; intending to work extra hard in Pilates to see if that would help “cure” my back pain. You see, I have lived with this pain for many years but it wasn’t until the pandemic that the sedentary lifestyle made the pain completely intolerable.Fast forward to now, one month post spinal fusion, I have no pain. I am walking almost completely back to normal and driving. Pre surgery, I cried every day due to the fear of never walking again or walking crooked or simply ending up worse than I was before. It was all for nothing. If you’re considering back surgery and are scared out of your mind, trust me I’ve been there. Please consider the possibility that this could be the best decision of your life. I trust Dr. McCance without any hesitation or reservation. I don’t know how he did it but he kept me calm and made me laugh throughout the process. All in all, I’d do it again and again! Thank you Dr. McCance you have changed my life in a way that you will never truly understand.Adriana, thank you for holding my hand each step of the way and Lindsey thank you for answering all of my crazy questions! God bless you all.

I was already prepped for a spinal fusion when Dr. McCance came down in his operating scrubs for a word. First met Dr. MCCANCE 07/2007 when I had a tractor accident that needed emergency surgery because my spinal column was compressed and paralysis was potentially imminent. Dr. McCance diagnosed and handled the surgery of the fusing of my C3-C7 to take pressure off my spinal cord. Two years later he fused my L3-L5 and 11 years later I am walking around just fine, using a cane but living a very active lifestyle. In 04/2019 I came to see Dr. McCance about straightening me up because after 11 years gravity had pulled me down and I was walking facing the ground all hunched over. I was diagnosed with flatback/scoliosis and needed an osteotomy as well as replacing some of the old equipment put in 11 years ago when they fused my C3-C7 and fused my L3-L5. Getting it done 08/2019 I feel the operation was 110% successful. I am completely straight up with my height going from 5’6” to 5’81/2” and my pain has decreased by 75%. A total success!!!!In addition all of the Doctor’s who work with Dr. McCance are 5 star including the PA’s and his office staff as well.. Everything is run 1st class at every level. You are definitely making the right decision using Dr. McCance who personally I feel has provided mewith a life I might not of had using another doctor.

My daughter is 19 years old and had corrective spinal surgery by Dr. McCance one year ago today. She had a spinal curvature of 53 degrees, a noticeable hump on her back, and was quite often in pain from normal activities. Standing up for too long, sitting in certain positions, and even sleeping would sometimes cause her discomfort to the point of tears. Also, the self-consciousness that most any teenage girl has was exacerbated by the noticeable hump. She was afraid to wear certain clothing, swimsuits, and only took pictures from her left side.Dr. McCance presented us with all the options, and we felt that surgery would be the best based on the severity of the curvature. Dr. McCance corrected her spine on March 11, 2019, and it has changed her life. She is super confident, no longer in pain, and able to do things she was never able to do before. She graduated from her PT, has an even better range of motion than prior to surgery, goes to the gym regularly, and no longer feels limited in any way. She has a scar down the middle of her back and, while it is minimal, she actually wears clothing to show it off! She views it as a battle scar and she is proud of it.Following surgery, the aftercare was amazing! Dr. McCances PAs, nurses, and office staff could not have been any more caring or thorough. Follow-up was constant, and the simplicity around scheduling everything from X-Rays to PT was incredible. We have our one year follow-up this Friday, and we cant wait to show him just how far she has come. Dr. McCance truly changed my daughters life for the better, and we could never thank him and his staff enough for the way he treated her and our family. If we could give him a one thousand star review, we would!

Ive had neck pain (herniated discs) since around 2005 and always struggled through with a mixture of pain meds, PT, rest, pillows....you name it. Last summer 2017 it started to get much worse to the point my right arm had terrible pain in it and I was losing strength, my fingers on my right hand were going numb and the pain in my neck was excruciating, so I decided I had to see someone urgently.I searched best neck spinal surgeon in NY over a weekend and did some surfing and Dr. McCances name continually came up. I called Dr McCances office on the Monday and saw him the next day. He and his team immediately organized an MRI and X rays for the following day. Once he saw those he advised I could try more of the same of what I was doing, but he felt that surgery was the best option. He took his time to explain that I needed ACDF surgery - basically going through the front of my neck, cutting 3 discs out and then filling the gaps with my own bone from my hip and putting a plate over the top of it and then this would all fuse in time.He operated on me within approximately 3~4 weeks of me first seeing him and I am now around 9 weeks post op. While I have some way to go yet to fully get over the surgery , the pain in my arm has gone, as has my neck pain and I have feeling back in my fingers again. Im starting PT soon and Im feeling very positive and hopeful that the worst pain is now behind me and Ill be much better than before.I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. McCance and his team. His team are all extremely polite, attentive and very professional. Special credit goes to the ladies on the front desk and his patient coordinator who went the extra mile to help me with appointments at a very stressful time, and his PAs that called me at home after the op on Thanksgiving when I needed advice on pain management. It was a good reminder that there are still people that will call when they say theyll call, and do what they say theyll do.If you have serious neck and back issues and need to see a doctor, or you need a second opinion after seeing other doctors, then I thoroughly recommend seeing Dr. McCance.

In 2009 I had lost use of my right arm, and it had shrunk down to skeletal size... For over a year no one knew what was happening to me, until a good internist figured it out and ordered an MRI. I had never had surgery before, other than tonsils as a kid, so I was nervous plenty! But Dr. Sean McCance at down with me and showed me the problems on the MRI... It was clear I was going to need an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion... I believe it was C-3, C4 & C-5... You know, one good shove on the street, and BAM! That would have been the end of me, prior to the surgery. So it really was life or death for me. Much to my surprise, Dr. McCance was even helpful financially... hes a stand up guy, a real mensch... extremely rare for a surgeon in that position. And was always there to return a call if I needed to talk to him. The surgery was supposed to be something like 90 minutes.... And the doctor had to work on my cervical spine area to buzz away a ton of bone spur material that was causing a lot of problems, and putting me in great danger! A lot of surgeons would have been watching the clock and would have rushed to get it done, but not Dr. McCance. As I have said before -- he stuck with me hour after hour after hour... for nearly 6 hours, to clean up all those bone spurs. And he didnt stop until it was completed properly. Scary stuff... But this is a super pro -- and everything was fine. So a month later I was feeling much better, and didnt even have a scar on my neck where his entrance had been. You know, when it comes to spine surgery -- you dont want to fool around with lesser, inferior surgeons. And I have heard some stories about poor results from lesser surgeons. Were talking life and death, and you have to go with the very best. And thats exactly what he is -- The Best. Ill never forget him.

I recently had a five-year post-surgery check-up with Dr. McCance. I shared with him that he “saved” my life. And he did! Dr. McCance operated on my “anterior cervical decompression fusion” of C4 through C7. The compression between the spinal discs had been causing painful pressure to my head and weakness down to my arms. The symptoms were so severe and chronic that I was no longer able to lead a “normal” life. Yet, the surgery to insert titanium in my spine sounded scary. Dr. McCance and his staff took the time to explain the procedure in great detail and share with me what to expect. I was assured by the professionalism, thoroughness and attentive care of Dr. McCance and his team. The surgery was a great success. His team was meticulous in every step before and after the surgery including arranging for several pre-surgery medical tests and follow-up care. I was able to fully resume an active life within few months. These days, I am unaware of spine related pains most of the time. When I think of how my life was before the surgery and how it is now, it’s no exaggeration that Dr. McCance gave me back my life! I am incredibly grateful for the exceptional care I received.

I got my first of 2 spine operations from Dr. McCance when I was 18 years old. 7 days later, he operated again to finalize the procedure. This was in 2001 (15 years ago), and yet Im still as grateful as always for the stellar job he did on my surgery.Make no mistake about it -- my operation was a major one. I had severe curve in my spine and absolutely needed surgery. Through two procedures, his team corrected my scoliosis and fused my spine from T3 to L3, which is a 12 level fusion (thoracic to lumbar). In English, more than half of my spine was fused with metal rods! If you think that Im living confined to a wheelchair, rolling around in pain, or bed ridden to this day, youre not crazy. The truth is, however, I was able to recover and live an active life as a professional circus performer. Although I couldnt pursue a career as a full time professional acrobat as I originally planned due to my spinal condition, I was able to continue juggling and have made a bigger name for myself as a professional in that field.Dont get me wrong. Recovery was grueling. I had to work my butt off and fight through countless hours of physical rehab to get back to normal activity. There are still things that I cannot do. I had to say goodbye to doing backflips, playing contact sports, and doing heavy manual labor. But the good part is that I did eventually return to a normal life, and at 33 years old, Im in even better shape than my 18-year old, pre-surgery self. With Dr. McCances great attention to detail when it came to my case, I felt like I was his only patient. When I tell people the type of operation that I got, theyre in disbelief until I show them a photo of my x-ray. They see how fit I am and the career that I have, and they say No way! They then rightfully credit me for what they can imagine was a tough recovery, but I also make it a duty to bring attention to the incredible job that Dr. McCance did. I couldnt have had a better surgeon to do it, and I highly appreciate all of his hard work. If youre with him, youre in good hands.

Like most people, I rarely write reviews. And when I do, its usually for exceptionally positive service. In this case, I feel the need to review Dr. McCance because of how exceptionally poor my experience has been.About 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with 3 bulging discs and arthritis in my lower back. It only bothers me occasionally. But given it had been a decade and over the past few years Ive had increased episodes of pain, I figured I should get checked up.I went to see Dr. McCance because everything I read said he was the best. And while he may be a very skilled surgeon, he is, by no means, a good doctor. When I called to schedule an appointment, I was told Id likely need a new MRI and that I should have one done before the appointment, which was a week out. I called to schedule the appointment on a Friday and was told they would call by Tuesday to tell me where to go. Tuesday cam and went; no call. I called on Wednesday and was informed Id be getting a call before my appointment on Thursday and told where to go. Again, no call.My appointment was for early afternoon on Thursday. I showed up 35 minutes prior to the scheduled time to complete paperwork, etc. I sat in the waiting room for roughly 2 hours before being taken to an exam room. I then sat in the exam room for 45 minutes before the PA came in. She asked me a few questions, which took about 5 minutes, then left. I waited another 30 minutes for Dr. McCance. When he came in, he asked all the same questions as the PA, spent even less time with me (~3 minutes), and told me to go get an MRI. Mildly infuriating since they were supposed to send me for an MRI prior to my appointment. All told, I spent more than 4 hours in his office to see him and his PA for a combined total of less than 10 minutes only to be told that I need an MRI.I scheduled the MRI and asked the radiology center to send me a copy of the results as well as sending a copy to Dr. McCance. I reviewed the written report and the images prior to receiving a follow up call from Dr. McCances PA. In the follow up call, the PA told me I had mild bulging at L1, which didnt match my diagnosis from 10 years ago and did not match what was in the written report from the radiologist. Not only that, the images were for L2 and down. How can they diagnosis a bulging disc that wasnt included in the images? In addition, L1 is a vertebrae. Discs are BETWEEN vertebrae. You CANT have a bulging disc at L1. So is it between t12 and L1? Or L1-L2? To add to the frustration, there were 3 other items on the reports that the PA did not even mention. When I questioned the PA, she stumbled over her words for a second, then said to ignore the written reports. Dr. McCance reads the images himself. When I asked her why my pain was closer to L5-S1, which is what the written report called out, she said its PROBABLY referred pain. Again...what??Despite Dr. McCance not taking my insurance, I went to see him because hes supposed to be the best. Ive now come to realize that he is likely only the best if he can charge your insurance through the nose so he can make a buck. If you do a bit of Googling, youll see a number of other reviews that call him out as only looking for money. Those reviews are 100% accurate based on my experience.tl;dr? This guy is only looking to make as much money off you as possible. He has no concern for actually caring for his patients.

I read the previous review of this practice and feel the opposite. I had a spinal fusion over four years ago and have been in pain since. I have been through so much therapy, several different medications, an epidural steroid injection, a facet block, two separate radio frequency ablations, several xrays, ct scans, mris and a myelogram. Dr. McCance was highly recommended. Within a week of my first correspondence with his office I was at my consultation. He did a thorough examination of me and explained what needed to be done and why, reviewed my films with me and was understanding of my concerns. His surgical coordinator helped me set up my surgery that day. They arranged for me to attend an informational spine class at the hospital which was very helpful. They also arranged appointments for any other Drs I would need to see and sent them scripts for all tests I needed done including donating my blood for my surgery. His office is very helpful and he is probably the most knowledgeable spine surgeon I have met. The preparation for this surgery has been very stressful but Dr. McCance even called me himself to talk with me a bit and help me. I am set for surgery a week from now. I am certain that if youre looking for an excellent surgeon, you have found one of the best in Dr. McCance. Please do not listen to the previous review on this site. I researched him through other spine info sites and read so many reviews of peoples lives being completely changed for the better because of surgery they had with him. I am certain my outcome will be the same. Spine Associates is an excellent choice if youre looking for a spine surgeon.
