You can tell Dr. Youms expertise by the wall-to-wall awards in his office and the recommendations from other orthopedic doctors (one of whom referred me). From my personal experience, I have nothing but the best to say about his efficiency and pleasantness. Im grateful that such a great doctor chose to be trained in and made himself available for orthopedic surgery.Luckily for me, he also asked about my experience with the hospital at my post-op follow-up visit, and I mentioned I had just received a $1,800 bill for my anesthesiologist. He said that didnt sound right and told me to call the hospital billing department. It turned out they had made a mistake and tried to charge an old insurance plan they had on file, even though they had just confirmed my new insurance plan at intake. Im glad I asked him about this before committing to some payment plan with the hospital for their erroneous charges.Dr. Youms staff are efficient and pleasant too. They always pick up the phone and address any concerns. They call and email multiple times with reminders.

Most attentive, caring, wonderful, compassionate and competent doctor I know. He is everything a doctor should be. He was recommended by another doctor by simply saying “ you should see a doctor that treats other doctors”. That’s exactly who Dr. Youm is. Following my first surgery and what I thought was a miracle speed recovery, I have recommended 2 other people (31 and 70+) both had different surgeries and both said recovery time was the quickest they have seen.Dr. Youm is amazing. Thank you for taking care of me and having such a wonderful staff.

I’ve been having shoulder issues for around ten years or so and have been to three other orthopedic surgeons who didn’t know what was going on. My friend referred me to Dr Youm and it’s been a life changing experience. He knew automatically what was going on and sent me for an advanced MRI. He explained what was going on and why and told me that we will need to have a minor exploratory surgery. When they went in they were able to fix the bicep and a labrum tear that I had. After years of suffering, I found the right doctor and am back to using my shoulder for all my physical activities. If like to thank the whole RYC orthopedics team for all their help and support!!!

One year ago I had replacement knee surgery with Dr. Youm. I waited a year to write my review but now that a year is up, I am ready. I think his entire office and staff other than his PA are amazing. They truly all treat you well. Shout out to Cathy, Myra and Arthur. Everyone else was wonderful too. Every-time I needed something from the office it was attended to pleasantly and immediately. My surgery went well but I had a terrible reaction to the anesthesia and had to be hospitalized for a week after surgery to correct the condition. When I called the office the night and morning before I was admitted for the emergency, Eric the PA was less than helpful. But lets talk about Dr. Youm. I think he is a good doctor, smart, caring and willing to go the distance with his patients. Also a good surgeon. I saw him multiple times during the year of my recovery which took a little longer than I liked but he was always honest and encouraging. At my last visit which was my one year check up he even encouraged me to get a second opinion to put myself at ease. I really appreciated it. I would definitely recommend Dr. Youm for knee replacement surgery. The second opinion went well confirming Dr. Youms assessment and I am overall pleased. I wish that my knee healed a little better but my endurance is excellent and although I have a bit of discomfort that may or may not go away, the surgery was a success.

Had the same surgery in another state 6 1/2 years ago. Recovery has been even better this time. Youm is an amazing surgeon. He walked me through my graft options, the reasons for choosing each one and potential long term factors in choosing the right one based on my post-op goals in sports. He and his staff helped me find the right PT/post-operative care and have been expedient in answering any questions I’ve had along the way.

This review is to let everyone know that Dr Youm is the best. After getting multiple different opinions, I am so thankful that I went with Dr Youms! I had 2 labrum tears, a rotator tear, biceps tear and arthritis which he repaired on 6/6/2019. Miraculously (at 45 yrs old), I was playing Ice hockey 6 months after surgery and can now throw a baseball and football 100% pain free.!! And to think that one doctor recommended to give up playing sports entirely and just to not do things that required lifting my arm over my head. Others suggested total shoulder replacement. Thanks to Dr Youm, my shoulder feels like it was never injured. THANK YOU!!!

I had a labrum and bicep tear which Dr. Youm took care of in March 2017 and then a tear I had in my hip in November 2017.Dr. Youm gave me as good of an experience that one can have when going through surgeries. He has a very calming presence and welcomed any questions that I had and was able to speak with me where I understood everything. The follow up appointments were fine and he is always willing to help and make sure his patient is good.I highly recommend Dr. Youm! I’m truly speechless at some of these reviews I’m reading.I really couldn’t recommend anyone other than Dr. Youm. It is because of him I regained total mobility of both hips. In 2015, at age of 18 I underwent labral repair and bone shaving on both hips just two months apart (April & June). I fully recovered and was back to running and dancing before I knew it. I had no pain and you would have never known what I’d had been through by looking at me. It was because of him I walked pain free again.Recently I developed pain in my hips again (5 years later), upon seeing Dr. Youm it was found that I had femoral acetabular impingement. These surgeries are buying me time and more time than I thought they ever could. I knew moving along with this next surgery I was in good hands. I don’t trust anyone else. It is because of him I felt confident in this next surgery. Just two days ago I underwent my third hip surgery where I underwent impingement surgery and received an allograft. While recovering I figured I’d write this. It is unfortunate we meet under these circumstances but there isn’t anyone else I’d want operating on me. Dr. Youm has operated on my mother (shoulder, elbow, hip, & knee) brother (knee & elbow), and a few other family members. To say we trust him is an absolute understatement. I could write about him for days. The bottoms line is, I would HIGHLY recommend him.To his office... THANK YOU. From Cathy the surgical coordinator to the front desk. Thank you all for getting back to us quickly, being so flexible, and going above and beyond. You know who we are and we appreciate you all more than you’ll ever know possible.THANK YOU Dr. Youm for everything you’ve never known you’ve done for my family & I.-Kristina, Jo Ann, & Robert

Dr. Youm has done all five of my joint surgeries (three hip, two shoulder) and I find him to be a smart, skilled and caring surgeon. I am a type A senior and push myself physically and the wear and tear on my body is undeniable. Though friends have tried to convince me to try their surgeons I stick with this doctor as I trust and respect him and he treats me likewise. His office is efficiently run and the hospital staff where he performs his surgeries is very good. I get terrible nausea from anesthesia and the anesthesiologists there do whatever they can to avoid this reaction and they are successful. The post op nursing care is very attentive. At least try him for a consultation; you owe it to yourself to have the best on your side.

Dr. Youm operated on both of my hips, three months apart. Arthroscopic surgery for FAI impingement. Both procedures were successful. Very little pain after surgeries. Left hip was almost 5 months ago. Right hip was a little over 2 months ago. PT is a bit painful due to stiffness and minor arthritis in hips, but Im going 3x/week and walking about 3 miles a day at a brisk pace. I expect full recovery to take a while, so just have to be patient and keep up with the PT. I plan to do stem cell injections into both hips, also with Dr. Youm, to hopefully slow down the progression of arthritis. In short, Dr. Youm is an excellent surgeon. Hes also a very nice guy. I highly recommend him. NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases was a good experience both times. Nice staff. Lastly, as of this writing, Dr. Youm takes many insurance plans, which is extraordinary for a surgeon of his skill level and experience. Many of his colleagues in NYC do not.

I do not recommend Dr. Thomas Youm to anyone. My R hip surgery was one of the worst experiences Ive ever had, the procedure began without me fully being under. I have vivid memories of the surgery. My recovery was incredibly slow due to pelvic floor issues that came up (numbness, loss of sensation, incontinence, tearing of the perineum --- all from pudendal nerve damage that took place during the procedure) which the doctor ignored, and didnt acknowledge mostly because hes male and the research doesnt support that pelvic floor treatments are effective. This is absolutely not true, and best to refer patients to services that may be of benefit to them so they can experience it for themselves, medical research is vast, he didnt know what he was talking about, and sometime medical research is also flawed and doctors need to be critical of this and not base all their decisions based off of the research they know alone. He didnt provide me with referrals and resources that could have really helped me. He also refused to get an image of the L hip going into the surgery even though I asked for one several times, because sure enough my recovery was slow given the L hip was also injured. I found out I could have sued him but I didnt because all my time and energy had to go into my recovery and thats what I focused on. If there was no statute of limitations, I would sue now. Go with another doctor, dont waste your time, $ or trust.

Before taking the decision to have surgery under Youm’s care, please make sure that you go to multiple doctors’ opinion. Under Thaomas Youm and Martin Quino, two fellow colleague who share the same office on 1056 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY, I had the following surgeries: 1) Arthroscopic right hip on 02/25/16; 2) Arthroscopic right hip on 11/16/17; 3) Arthroscopic left hip on 01/25/18; 4) Microdiscectomy L4-L5 on 03/19/18; 5) Arthroscopic left knee on 04/24/2018. I was scheduled for an arthroscopic surgery right shoulder 06.14.18 which I postponed it for August,18 and I finally canceled.I am a former athlete, hurdler jumper, and a person who was involved in many sport’s activities. The multiple procedures I had under these people did nothing but to increase the joints pain. I am limping when walking and have pain in both hips and knees. Prolong walking, sitting and standing and weight bearing is increasing the joints pain. Most of the time I spend lying in bed or recliner in order to avoid the joints pain. I cannot function, I cannot do anything. For two years I am in pain which started to affect my mental health. I got depressed when I found out that I should not have done all the surgeries due to hip dysplasia condition I have, and for being limited to all my activities.Treatment for borderline and mild dysplasia is very controversial and doctors prefers to lie that an arthroscopic surgery could cure your pain. It may help but that depends from case to case. Arthroscopic surgeries in mild and borderline dysplastic hips cases in unpredictable (the surgery could fail within a month) and doctors as Thomas Youm and others, forget to tell you this important detail. This is the most important detail you must know as a patient before agreeing to do the surgery knowing that you might have this condition. I was lab rat and source of income for Youm and Quirno and I made their pockets big especially for Youm.Congratulations Mr. Youm because you manage to fool two insurance company: 1) Geico to pay for two arthroscopic surgeries which had nothing to do with the accident because I had have dysplasia; 2) Cigna/eviCore to approve 11.16.17, 01.25.18,04.24,18 and 06.14.18 surgeries in such a short time without giving me the chance to fail to a full trial non operative procedures. You are a genius for lying about my post op health status in order to make extra money. Congratulation for managing to defraud Cigna for claims which were already paid by Geico and denied because you submit the claims later than 45 days. Congratulations for destroying my life and soon I’ll be 45 years old.Mr. Youm, I wish you to suffer the joints pain I’ve suffered after the multiple surgeries you did to my body. I wish you to suffer as father, husband, and sibling as my husband, my mom and sister are going through since you and Quirno cut my body in five occasions. I hope you’ll have a chance to feel what my husband, my mom and my sister felt when I was thinking to end my life in multiple occasions due to hips pain and for not knowing what I did wrong in order to deserve this treatment. After you feel all of that, hopefully you may become a human being and you’ll find out that health is more important than money. Same wishes for Mr. Quirno and all the doctors who’ve been” treating” me or refused to treat me after you.I requested written answers from your office in regards of the treatment plan you and your fellow collogue, Quirno, totally failed to address my joints problem. Please have the decency to respond to your patients because is your obligation to respond. I know Hypocrite Oath is a myth for “doctors” as you and Qurino and many other I tape recorded and is very easy to prove but how about morals, integrity, common sense, ethics?Hopefully my review will help people who has very little medical knowledge and has English barrier because I am one of them, to stay away from your and Quirno’s practice.Colocioiu 09.21.1974

Dr. Youm was highly recommended by a very very close college friend of ours and moving forward with meeting and going through two procedures with Dr. Youm was the best decision I could have ever made.I have endured severe arthritic pain in both of my knees. One New Year’s eve, this was noticed by our above-mentioned friend. She then expressed her unbelievably successful experience with Dr. Youm and Stem Cell Therapy. She then highly recommended him, sharing that it was at least worth the try… so I planned a visit! After my visit with Dr. Youm, he expressed that although I was no longer a good candidate for Stem Cell Therapy, Total Knee Replacement was a viable solution and that now would be a great opportunity to consider it. Both of my knees were bone-on-bone situations, so deciding which knee to go forward with first was really the only next step for me.Within one month, I moved forward with surgery on the right and recovered quickly, without infection or any difficulty getting back on my feet. After three weeks? I was back at work, full time, commuting through Manhattan as if nothing had happened! (But feeling even better than before).About one year later, I went ahead with the second knee and had an even quicker recovery process! How this happened? I’m not quite sure…. But it was great!Dr. Youm has excellent and very professional bedside etiquette. His staff is extremely patient and care so much about their patients. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr. Youm. The best of the best!

I am writing to express my mother’s and my sincere appreciation for the incredible service we received from the office. This review is to compliment in particular, the employees, Mira and Florence, who we had the pleasure to be helped by, and PA Eric Behrens, the Physician Assistant who administered my mother’s Orthovisc shots. Mira, Florence, and PA Behrens deserve a great deal of praise for their professionalism, patience, and kindness. My mother has been experiencing decapitating right knee pain, secondary from arthritis and a meniscus tear. This was unbelievably frightening and frustrating. My mother called the office for help, and was seen in a reasonable amount of time. When my mother began her series of three shots, they offered availability to accommodate our traffic concerns from Staten Island to the city. PA Behrens ability to calm my mother down and safely administer her series of shots with a sonogram for ideal placement was unparalleled. He ensured that she was comfortable, and that I understood the process as well. Everyone has helped us with a smile.I needed forms filled out for my employer so I could care for my mother during this time. Mira and Florence have been so accommodating and supportive with this. What a great representation of healthcare the office is. It is because of the excellent bedside manner and qualities PA Behrens demonstrated that I can rest easy that my mother is going to be alright, and I trust this entire establishment with her health.Thank you so much again for the both of us!

I was referred to Dr Youm by my primary care doctor in Jan 2017 for ongoing pain in my right hip. From my very first visit, I felt like I was in good hands. After X-rays, which are done in office, and MRI (out of office), and a diagnostic cortisone shot, I was diagnosed with a labral tear do to FAI, and Dr Youm recommended arthroscopic surgery to repair my labrum and fix the impingement. I had my surgery at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital (which I have written a separate review for) on May 16th, 2017. I was in far less pain than I anticipated following surgery, and was off all pain meds within 2 days. Dr Youm has been equally attentive for all of my follow ups, answering all of my questions and concerns. I have been in PT for 6 months and the muscles around my hip joint are stronger than they had ever been before. I have experience some tendonitis in my quads due to over stressing the muscles, but this was easily remedied by changing some of my PT exercises. The staff at the front desk, have always been exceptionally kind, and when I got paranoid I had reinsured my hip, they were able to schedule an appointment with Dr Youm the next day.I have never waited more than 10-15 minutes to see the doctor, but I do always schedule my appointments in the morning.Only after I started PT did I learn that Dr Youm was one of the best hip surgeons in NY, and assessment I agree with given my experience. I highly recommend Dr Youm and his staff to anyone seeking treatment for FAI.
