Its hard to find dentists that take Medicaid, so thats why a lot of people come here. One big issue is the students make their own schedule, and its also possible you might not even be assigned to a particular student. This means you could be waiting for an appointment and there is no one to make it for you, and the office staff just tells you that someone will call you for months. This also means that if you have to cancel an appointment, good luck getting it rescheduled, because the student dentist may decide they dont feel like rescheduling you (punishing you for having cancelled the appointment, regardless of the reason, which shouldnt even matter) or they might just forget about you which is understandable because they probably were never trained in administrative work either since most of them are between 25-30 years old and likely never had to do customer-facing work while they were going to elite schools. The end result of this is that it can take months or years to get your dental work done. Meanwhile, your teeth keep getting worse. This is setting aside the fact that your results will definitely vary based on which student you are assigned to on any given day. While most of the faculty/attending doctors are good, at least one of them is super condescending and will shame you for the state of your teeth (regardless of whether you have had any access to dentists throughout your life, and whether you have non-dental health issues that increase tooth decay, or your access to good nutrition, whether you might be homeless, etc.). If Im going to the dentist of my own free will, I dont need the dentist to tell me Im a screw-up because I have plaque on my teeth, and to speak to me like you would speak to an ill-behaved child. Its weird. Make specific recommendations for dental hygiene, and prescribe specific treatments for the issues that a patient presents with.

All I have to say is AMAZING!!!!I wasn’t looking for a dentist when I went to the hospital but I ended up getting lost & I landed on the dentist floor. That is where I meet DR.Alec.Litrel. He helped me get out of the building but, as I notice he was a dentist & I had experience throbbing pain all over my mouth 2 days before. I decided to let him know & he explain how I can make an appointment. It was sudden but I think god put me on the path because when I went to the appointment & did that X-ray….. wow!!… my teeth was getting messed up, I had a bad decay tooth & multiple cavity. I would had never known about the decay tooth because I Barely felt any pain but expect for that one night. Alex went to work on it & the cavity reach down to the root canal… He had great back up like Dr.Konecky & others (my tooth was a stubborn one) but they got through it. It took 3 to 4 appointment, yes it did!, but it was all well worth it. Alex made sure he did everything step by step, no rushing, he was very patient with me & it felt like nothing, it was painless & actually some what relaxing. 😌 I thank god I bump into him lord knows how my health would had been like right now due to the decay tooth if I haven’t went to the wrong floor 😊 my tooth feels so good no throbbing pain I can chew well. Thank you so much Alec if you see this I greatly appreciate it. He did went away for a few weeks so I went back for another appointment but this time I had Jules as my dentist. Look let me tell you her hand skill is Nice she went right in to doing her thing on a different tooth that also had a cavity on it. With her too I felt no pain her hand as light as a feather. That’s tooth feels so good also. My mouth is happy I feel happy & healthy. Thank you much Columbia dentistry you are all amazing.

While the students and residents are amazing (and I do mean that), the office staff is absolutely terrible. In person, they have bad attitudes and act like you’re inconveniencing them just for showing up to your appointment. The worst part, though, is making an appointment. Dealing with them has been a nightmare. When I had a tooth break off at the gum line, it took them 3 weeks to set up a Zoom screening. It then took an entire month to set up an in-office screening, where they determined, yes, I needed an extraction/implant. (Duh!) It then took 8 weeks to set up the screening appointment with oral surgery. It then took another 3 weeks to schedule the surgery itself. And now I can’t get on the calendar to complete the restoration even though my implant has healed. Each time, what happens is they tell you to call to set up appointment. When you call (once you finally get through), they tell you they don’t have access to the calendar, so they tell you they’ll pass your info along and someone will call you back. No one ever does. You can call everyday, and no one calls you back. You can ask them to escalate it to the head of the department, and they say they will, but no one calls you back. It takes making a complaint with Patient Services to get an appointment (they do it on your behalf), but Patient Services has long wait times on the phone, too. After nearly 8 months of subjecting myself to this kind of abuse - when dental issues are already traumatic enough - I finally decided I didn’t deserve it. Yes, I needed the savings that the dental clinic is supposed to offer, but ultimately, I’ve decided to complete my restoration process with a private dental office that doesn’t charge much more than this teaching clinic (they were upfront about the price over the phone), has a very friendly staff, was able to see me the very same day when I called and told them what was going on, and will be able to wrap this restoration process up in 2 weeks, not another 2 or 3 months (or more).

Horrible, extremely rude front desk staff. They give you so much attitude, you would think that they are doing charity or doing you a favour by checking you in. What they don’t realise is that it is us patients who are providing the students & residents with hands-on experience. Do not for a minute think that the service is cheap. IT IS NOT! I was charged for Day 1 when nothing was done and received constant text and email saying that the bill is pending. When I called several times to discuss the bill, no one was available!

Staff are unwilling to provide a general idea of minimum/average price for Invisalign. I understand that treatment costs vary by person, but the average/minimum cost is an easy statistic, which staff miraculously seem to have on hand when you go in person but not over the phone. In fact, the school claims in the first line on the orthodontics clinic webpage that services are priced at much lower rates compared to private clinics. How can a statement like this even be made without some idea of the average costs? The kicker is the secretary (I believe her name was Melanie) said we have no one like that when I asked to talk to someone in billing or who is familiar with billing. There is no one in the clinic that handles billing or has an idea about billing? You need to improve your customer service, otherwise it will turn away customers. I will not go in.

I switched to Columbia Vanderbuilt College of Dentistry Clinic from the NYU Dental School clinic which was a total and utter disaster (that institution should really have all of their teaching and operating licenses revoked!). My recent experience with Vanderbuilt Clinic since July 2020 has been like the day to the night compared to NYU. My case, requiring post and core in very long root canals and two crowns was particularly complex and I was passed from 3rd year student dentists on the 7th floor to the 4th year student dentists on the 5th floor who are on the verge of graduation and beginning their residency. Though I was initially apprehensive of being passed around multiple students, boy was I happy that I got into the hands of the 4th year student Dr. Alexander (Alec) Litrel!!! He was an absolute star, which is attested to by two other stellar reviews on here. From the outset, Dr. Alec got in touch with me by text and phone, welcoming me to the upcoming appointments with him (I mean, how many practicing doctors can you expect to receive a welcoming message from nowadays?). He went out of his way speaking with both supervising faculty and the admins staff making sure my scheduled appointments were firm and I would not be passed over by somebody else. During the appointments, he explained every step of the treatment plan, every detail on the X-ray pics and the impression molds, and texted the images with explanatory graphics to me for my own records. I felt immediately reassured that I was in great hands! Not only has he obviously acquired a great deal of knowledge in the field of general dentistry, he’s also got rare character traits, such as having outstanding communication skills and being extremely personable. I’m sure every residency would be thrilled to accept him upon graduation and any patient would be lucky, as was I, to have him as his treating dentist. I’ll be sure to follow his professional career path which I’m sure will be very bright for him and become his patient again if he decides to practice in NYC area and accepts my insurance. I would highly recommend anyone exploring dental treatment at the Vanderbuilt Clinic to seek out Dr. Alec specifically, his schedule permitting - you won’t regret it. Many thanks, Dr. Alec!!!

Two weeks ago I came in for an emergency visit due to excruciating pain. This tooth that had been irritating me for the last three years had finally met its match; Dr. Alec Litrel. He is the most caring and enthusiastic dentist I’ve ever seen. I was nervous about getting my tooth pulled at first; However, his ability to make sure I was comfortable and aware of the what would happen to my teeth made me love the dentist again. Setting up future appointments today with Dr. Litrel let me know that he’s dedicated to seeing his patients smile. I’m So thankful to have met him and become a new patient. After putting off a lot of dental work, I began as a very anxious patient at the Columbia Dental School early in 2020,. I have found most of the students, administrators and supervising staff to be exemplary. They are knowledgeable, helpful, compassionate and meticulous. The equipment is state of the art. On a couple of my most recent visits I was offered a virtual reality headset to help combat my anxiety, absolutely loved it!! I have been over a dozen times, still have many visits ahead of me. I have a different outlook on the entire process as a result of all of my good experiences.

Horrible experience. Very condescending attitude. The student that did my root canal was great, thats the only reason this has any stars at all but that was about it. The other student in the dental department I Initially thought it was going to be great but soon I noticed that he made condescending comments instead of just providing service, they even sounded innocent sometimes but were indeed disrespectful. A lot of a appointments with very little progress. Highly inefficient. Finally, I had to go to a private dental office because it just wasnt worth it, the price difference is minimal but the trauma that is that place is something I dont wish anyone. It almost felt like they didnt want work with a diverse, poor population.

If I could give this place a 0 stars I would. I have had numerous appointments and none have resulted in any work being done. There always confusion and no one knows what’s going on. I keep getting the run around and being passed off from one doctor to the next with no resolve. I thought that this institution was prestigious and could actually help me after all my troubles with dentist in the past. I have dentures and 4 implants to hold my dentures in. One of the implants has gone further into my gum. What I have wanted the doctors at Columbia to do was to removed, fix and replace it, in addition to getting a set of new dentures. For the past year and a half I’ve been trying to have this issue fixed and nothing. My last visit they were trying to suggest that I do an additional 4 implants and told me I had to pay out of pocket without addressing my main concerns/issues. And trying to charge me for something my insurance already approved to pay. This has really been frustrating and now I see I have to actually find a dentist that’s willing to listen to there patients and get result and not waste their time. I wish I would have seen the reviews before thinking Columbia was the right place.

This would probably make an interesting immigrant story... now that I speak English better, and I can afford real dental care, I can look back and rate Columbia Dental School. I went to one of the teaching clinics because I was a student myself, and a new mother, and lacked enough money to take proper care of my tooth. The student performed a root canal (I have a whole other question about made up needs to give the student the opportunity to practice or pass an exam...) and it all seems ok. That night I started getting these ziiiing! pains in the treated tooth, which only got worse as days went by. I finally managed to be seen again and one of the professors, summoned, told me the student had went through the tooth and into the jaw, and now I needed an extraction. At least as that point I should have gone to a dentist but again, no English, no money... they pulled the tooth, refused to give it to me (of course, as it had the proof of the botched procedure) and then I had to go, my son on my hip, and wait for hours in the hallways on the upper West Side, to ask for a refund of the root canal, so I can save for a bridge now. It was evident nobody wanted to see me there anymore, and I would now know what to advise myself. The place prays on poor New Yorkers’ dental problems as fertile ground for patients who can’t complain. Oh, the extraction was done very well and it was free. THAT student evidently must have been more diligent. The final cost was a bridge instead of a crown, plus the molar above the bridge wearing off faster... for cleanings, maybe. But if you need a root canal and can at all find the money, don’t go there.

Okay so I should start by saying this is a COLLEGE for dental students. This clinic is run by senior dentists that train dental students on actual patients to gain experience. With that said, you will hear lots of medical terminology during the procedure and it will take longer than usual. I got wisdom teeth extracted with a rotten molar and my dentist took quite a while to get the work done but she did it just right with the assistance of a senior dentist.I am not a fan of the scheduling system. It seems to be poorly optimized. The front desk worker who checks your COVID screening papers has to walk you to the desk and run back to each patient and repeat which is very time consuming. If you have an appointment in the system you will be seen on time.If you walk in as an emergency, you will be seen when there are no other appointments in the time frame. If there are appointments from 9-12pm and you are a walkin, you will be seen after the 12pm is done.Again I must emphasize if you are walking in same day, you should be at the clinic first thing they open because after a few hours they stop taking walk-ins if they are booked with appointments. If you are able to be seen, expect to wait quite a while to be seen.Unfortunately with COVID it looks like a lot of dental clinics are booked for two months including this one. COVID restrictions require surgical procedures to be done in a closed room so that can cause delays as well.If you are okay with going to a dental student and waiting a little longer, this is not a bad clinic to go to, but their scheduling system is quite awful and administration should take charge and improve, instead of blaming shortcomings on the pandemic.

UPDATE: Patient Advocate never followed up with me. Only called me to ask me the same questions in a suspicious way AND to basically say we believe you now that we have see with our own eyes, and said we are handling it. Never got back to me with what actually was the result, which led me to leave a VM and no one responded. DO BETTER! I am so glad DR OZ has been covering this. This needs to change! My experience started out well with one of the student dentist she actually did a great job! Unfortunately, when I went to complete the work I was called during this pandemic to come in and complete it with a faculty member Dr B this doctor was very unprofessional and unhygienic she risked my health by using unsafe practices. When I confronted her in a calm assertive manner she lied to my face telling me she did not do what I saw her do with my own eyes insulting my intelligence she may have gone to school a few extra years to get that degree but she is not operating to the best of her capacity to fulfill the oath she took to do no harm. During my visit someone interrupted the procedure to share with her patient information for another patient while I am sitting in the chair waiting for my procedure to be completed this person who interrupted not only shared patient information with the doctor which is supposed to be private while Im sitting the doc also interacted in a way that in normal non pandemic conditions would require her TO WASH HER HANDS AND CHANGE GLOVES BUT she tried to proceed with the same gloves to re-enter my mouth with! I immediately asked her to change her gloves it is standard for them to wash their hands and change their gloves when something like this happens. Instead she told me to my face after I saw her with my very own eyes NOT UPHOLDING STANDARD CLEANLINESS PRACTICES by touching&interacting with outside items&then proceeding to want to continue her work on me that she was following standards. This was a lie-standard confirmed by staff later-she lied to my face. Gaslighting me: She then tried to tell me over&over again that she did not do what I saw her do which was a lie. I asked her to please change her gloves multiple times. She refused. I could not believe that my patients rights for safe hygienic treatment were being violated and that this doctor alleged doctor who is supposed to hold hygiene to the highest standards during a PANDEMIC right now and after apparently they were taking new steps to be clean and safe were being thrown out the window because she felt I did not deserve that treatment. It is not unknown that black women are many times treated unfairly in medical facilities pain not taken seriously and given subpar treatment I was shocked that this white doctor given the opportunity to be a faculty member at this popular hospital was willfully creating this dynamic in my face. She editorialized her notes using racially charged words to describe me asking her to keep clean standards and basically cover herself and make herself look good. When we coming to the hospital we have to have our temperatures checked twice why is it that this doctor Dr cannot even change her gloves and wash her hands which is a standard practice even outside of this pandemic when a patient sitting in her chair and she is not following standard cleanliness protocols while interacting with someone not wearing gloves. I after this horrible encounter complained verbally to the manager on the floor then I received the Patient Advocates information and called her immediately giving a verbal complaint. Spoke with the patient advocate twice. Questions I was asked did not bode well with me &I felt as though I was not believed because I had to wait for them to confirm that dr who did not follow standard protocol who denied&lied when I saw her with my own eyes. The work I was supposed to complete that day was not the patient they discussed, patient created a precedent over my treatment, because of how vocal she was and I was rushed out.Complications next day due to her uncleaness never happened b4 after visit.BAD

Totally disappointed with the Clinic. Most of the staff I encountered were unfriendly and unhelpful. Dentists, Hygienists , Receptionist, and security all acted as if they were doing you some sort of favor by offering any sort of assistance. Everyone seemed to be in horrible moods. To start it takes a couple of weeks to even get an appointment. On that first visit youre not even examined. All they do is take X-rays of your teeth and tell you to return in 3-4 weeks to actually see someone. They give you an appointment time and insist that you must be on time or risk losing your allotted time. They warn that if youre more than 15 minutes late your appointment might be cancelled. They certainly did not practice what they preach..I spent over an hour just to be seen. The actual examination was Ok, but no one bothered offering any sort of explanation on what was the issue. My questions were answered to the minimum. I was practically told sit and not talk. Dental Work was done in small bits, spread out through several weeks . Certainly dont come if you need anything done urgently. As far as the facilities go The whole space is quite crowded. The examining rooms are small and the waiting room barely has any seats. Some of the front desk staff barely spoke English and had major attitude problems to do their jobs.

Their service is good and professional but, when you are a new patient, they make you go two times. The first time for a medical history check up and X-rays, and to assign you the best specialist. The second time is when you can get treated. I understand if this is the best workflow for them, but I think they should let the patient know in advance to properly plan, request days out of work, etc.Update: they make you go more than two times. The very first visit for X-rays. The second to examine your mouth and plan your treatment. From there, each patient goes a number of times determined by the treatment plan. At least four more if you have several cavities. So, if you’re using this service, plan to go at least three times per year. Appointments are one month apart. The good thing, the entire service is very comprenhensive. Since students take care of you and they are trying their best to do well, you’ll get everything check in detail. They also explain and show you how to floss and brush your teeth correctly, and give you a tooth cleaning kit to take home.

I went in December and was surprised by how friendly the woman was who took my X-rays. 6 months later I have yet to see a dentist and every time I call they tell me wait 48 hours. Finally got connected to the supervisor’s voicemail - two weeks and no return call. I’m glad I read the reviews, they are all true from my experience.

Avoid this place, they violate their own policies. I regret coming here for my treatment, unethical and unprofessional. They have a very efficient way to fix a problem; that is, they simply drop your case with no explanations. Go to NYU instead 100% different.

Dr.Kersch is full of high end talent, service and profit to Columbia University. We are lucky to have a great dentist as well a phenomenal professor in our era. Jeeva is a great student and will be a great dentist in a few years as well. Robert, the manager at Columbia is also a great host and will find his way to accommodate everyone in the schedule. I am impressed with the treatment I received today. DR.Kersch earned a HUGE Promotion, his talented work is fascinating. Thank you a lot Columbia Dental School. Cheers, Risilda

HORRIBLE STAY AWAY if their emergency dental service is a reflection of this institution its shameful. Went in for an emergency check up explained my situation as a student having to come in from long island with a persistent toothache. My regualr dentist clinic is NYU but had heard better comments on their emergency room. Boy was I wrong. The student dentist took an xray with my glasses ON before I could protest. The overseeing professor was rude and dismissive saying I should just get a wisdom tooth out because quote, I didnt look like I was in pain anyway after I specifically told then the pain was originating from a filling I had done and had possible recurring Carries. The guy never even looked at my mouth just a quick glance at the xray. They tried to impose on me to get the surgery done the same day. I said no and now have a useless charge of an emergency visit when they did NOTHING but give a dismissive glance. Im going back to NYU dentistry to get a proper opinion. Side note the equipment in the emergency room is dusty and old. Not to mention the sad excuse of the radiation vests they put on you.Definitely open to a dialogue with the practice

I took my 11 year old daughter and they did a terrible job on a root canal. They had students doing my daughters root canal and didn’t even inform me. It’s the worse place I’ve ever been to. They are really unprofessional.

This facility is the absolute worst. From front desk to the doctors. Doctors are very pushy and rush through your questions. Front desk staff are unwelcoming. Gossip about patients. My encounters have been horrible. Will never go back. Place is dirty also.

After being here before, I would have to say the staff can be very negative. I must have come on a bad day as some of them were very arrogant and judgemental. Will not come back!

Horrible. I keep getting billed for services they decided to terminate. Even though, I asked many times if they could handle a patient like my child. I’ve called many times and the person is never there. I’ve gone in person twice and this billing person is always supposed to be on vacation.

The waiting time with scheduled appointments is one hour or more. The treatment of the receptionists is horrible. The dental work I think is good but the attitude of the professional dentists leaves much to be desired.
