Summary: Offices are nice. Wait time is decent. Medical service seems adequate. Caveat: this place will cost you. This office orders excessive tests and isn’t transparent about billing. Background: this was my first visit to Manhattan Cardiology. I am a healthy, active 26 y/o male with genetic systolic hypertension. I came in for a blood pressure consultation and check-up.Story: During my visit, I was serviced primarily by a PA. A female doctor stopped by for the last 5 minutes to consult me regarding next steps. The doctor wasn’t coordinated with the PA on my medical history (fumbled family details), and asked whether I had been prescribed medicine by the PA. I did not have the pleasure of seeing Dr. George Welch, even though I booked an appointment with him specifically. Before seeing a doctor, the PA proceeded to order tests-after-tests with the rationale “to rule out underlying causes of hypertension”, all tests that I’ve had completed before, which I told the PA, but she was adamant about getting more tests done regardless whether I’d completed them before with no issues.Further to my point of excessive testing, before I shared my reasoning for visiting the cardiologist, the nurse took an EKG which I estimate, after speaking to my insurer, costs roughly 800 USD. I’m a physically fit 26 year-old male that exercises 5x/week and has no history of angina, heart palpitations, nor fainting, -- anything – just systolic hypertension. Ordering an EKG upfront with no questions asked strikes me as extreme for someone in my condition, particularly given that I’ve already had successful EKG tests completed, which I told the nurse beforehand. No other cardiologist I have visited in my life has proceeded in this way on an introductory visit. The billing staff were not transparent with the costs associated with testing. They evaded answering my questions directly and told me to ask my insurer. After enough prodding, the staff shared that the total bill for my first visit was over 2,300 USD. To recap, I booked this appointment through Zocdoc and simply wanted my blood pressure checked and wanted to see whether they thought I needed medication. The doctor ordered several more future tests, and the billing department claimed they could not share the price of these tests until after they billed my insurer. After telling the billing staff I would not go forward with further procedures until they tell me the price, they conceded that my upcoming test would be upwards of $700 USD. The bright side is that I was able to cancel all upcoming procedures with no issue.Summary: Manhattan Cardiology is a quintessential example why medical costs in the USA as a % of GDP are so high relative to other OECD countries. Medical service seemed decent but the costs were exorbitant. I won’t be returning. Good luck with this provider.
