What wonderful people with such god given souls for this type of service. The in home caregivers were just incredible and the caregivers at the in patient unit were equally as gifted. Vitas has assisted my mom from this world, my mother-in-law and my wife. I couldn’t ask for better. I truly love these people!

I would give them negative stars if that was an option. Please do not use Vitas Healthcare for any of your loved ones. They initially tried to reduce all medications (even those that are standard comfort care) for our mother which is against the goal of hospice and then after we complained they only gave her a token dose of the comfort care medicine. They used a doctor that was NOT the one we signed for on our hospice application to make medication decisions. They also unnecessarily gave my mother morphine (when she was NOT in any pain) that kept her completely asleep during the last few days of her life on this earth. I’m sure she would have preferred to be awake and spending time with her family. My advice would be to keep them far away from your family if you care about your loved ones.

We had experience with Hospice previously so we knew what to expect from Hospice care - so we were able to express exactly what we wanted and needed for our dad.We had some great Hospice nurses and some not so great nurses, but overall the care was very good. My dad was only in Hospice for a week. Medical supplies and medicines were delivered promptly, amd all the staff cared about making my dads last days as comfortable as possible. The great nurses knew exactly what to do to make dad comfortable without using pain medication until it was needed. The four stars is because we had trouble with getting the ambulance home. (It was delayed so I had to drive him home rather than wait at the hospital) There were also a couple of nurses who bossed our paid caregivers around like they were Hospice paid. The final nurse who declared dad deceased was fabulous as was the one who told us what to expect in dads final days.

I was initially pleased with the prompt delivery of supplies needed as my husbands condition deteriorated. The delivery guys were polite and very helpful. We were visited by several staff to do the intake interviews and finds out our needs. We were informed about what to expect. On a Wednesday the nurse assessed that my husband might have an infection (He could no longer visit his oncologist of personal physician, everything has to be done through hospice for insurance purposes.) The nurse ordered a blood test. He entered the request as STAT but I did not hear from the third party company until Friday when the phlebotomist called asking for directions. Apparently she was lost. After several attempts at helping her find her way, she said, Im just going to have to go back. I did not hear from the company to reschedule until I called Vitas on Monday. Finally on Tuesday someone came to take my husbands blood for testing. The results were not even in before he took a turn for the worst and died on Saturday. I dont believe the cancer got him, as hed lived with it for 5 years. I believe the infection killed him. The antibiotics didnt have time to take affect. The week prior, when he got really bad, I called the nurse, who wasnt scheduled to come out until the following week. No help there. When he was so bad off that I couldnt get him from the bathroom back to his bed without help, I was advised to call 911 for transfer assist. He was admitted to an in-patient Hospice facility that night after much red tape and waiting. There he was given medication to calm him and he finally experienced some mental and physical peace. The staff there was very friendly. However, he passed away only 20 minutes before I got there for a visit. No one read the signs that he was going and alerted me to that fact. My heart was broken that I was not there when he died.Since my husband was so bad off, why wasnt hospice there to help me? Isnt that what they do? I feel the lack of a sense of urgency made our experience with Vitas a very negative one.

STAY AWAY FROM VITAS. I had the worst experience you can imagine with them. These people did so many things to create a bad situation worse with my mom dying of cancer. They ruined my Christmas Eve by not getting me the incontinence I needed for my mom that night (as well as many others) and all the stores had closed early so I didnt have any for my mom that night and until the next day. Also on Christmas Eve my mom was having some problems. They sent a nurse out that could barely speak English. (she also didnt have any incontinence with her and the nurses are supposed to keep some with them in their car) After she checked on my mom I was having an incredibly difficult time trying to figure out what she was saying sometimes. She kept saying pee-oo. I asked her what are you saying? She said pee-oo. I finally figured out she was saying pill. When I confirmed this with her I told her to get out of my house. It was always something. I was always running out of supplies because they didnt bring enough. It was always small amounts of incontinence, gloves, wipes,,,,and they didnt monitor when I was running out or low on these things. I tried and so did my care givers and we would call VITAS but they would be late showing up many times. About 2 days after the Christmas ordeal I got rid of VITAS and got another hospice company who were fantastic. I told VITAS to stay out of my house and I also put a sign on my door that read VITAS employees. Stay out of this house. Do not enter. I told all of the care givers I had to not let them back into the house also. Like I said at the beginning of this review, STAY AWAY FROM VITAS.

DO NOT BELIEVE THEM WHEN THEY PROMISED THEY WILL REIMBURSE YOU ANY COST.The person who signed us on with Vitas hospice care on 4/9/15 told us that we might not get my dads pain medicine in time so she asked me to purchase the medicine at the hospital and Vitas will reimburse me the total cost.I gave the original receipt to the nurse at team 503 and she said she will turn it in to get it reimbursed.Since then I have tried to follow up with the nurse and team 503 to see what the status on the reimbursement every week for two months.I have called, emailed, wrote a letter to team 503, customer care and every number and person I can find in Vitas network but as of today NO ONE has contacted me regarding to my reimbursement. I have tried to reach the person responsible for billing/claims countless times but she could not give me an answer as to when I will receive the refund check and has ignored me for months after May.Till this date, I have not received any response back from them.

There were so many MANY horrible things that went wrong with these people and team 503. Stay far away! They lie, they will accuse you of horrible things, they are never on time, dont show up, meds are always late. They ask terminal patients to do things that are impossible or illogical. I would not send my dieing dog to these people. They have no business being in business.
