I have never had as much of a bad experience with an ophthalmology clinic as I had with Baylor Alkek Eye Center. My frustration with this clinic started during my first visit. While booking the appointment, the customer service agent took my insurance information (Superior Vision), but did not tell me that Baylor does not accept the Superior Vision insurance. I found out from the doctor, in her office, after I had driven 30 miles to the clinic, that my insurance is not accepted at their clinic. The second frustration, was that the doctor could not get my contact lenses fitted correctly after 5 visits. That means that I had to travel to the clinic FIVE times in a span of 2 months to finally get the contact lenses fitted correctly.I paid Baylor $470, twice more than what I usually pay for contact lens fitting and exam. The third frustration was when they bombarded me with letters, emails, and calls 4 months later to collect another $35 co-pay.My frustration is not so much about the cost of the visit, but rather the poor customer service and quality of care at this clinic. Ive been wearing rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses for almost 20 years. Every doctor got the fitting right the first time, and all of them accepted my insurance. Too many surprises at this clinic and I will not be back.

This is the strangest experience I have had with any doctor’s office. My primary care doctor placed an urgent referral to this place, and two weeks went by with no communication from them. Then I received a random unannounced phone call from them asking me if I could arrive at the clinic in 20 minutes. When I told them I obviously could not make it there that fast (or leave work without any prior notice whatsoever), they said they weren’t sure if or when I could reschedule.

I was referred to Dr. Bac T. Nguyen for cataract and glaucoma surgery at the Alkek Eye Center. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain all his treatment plan and options. The surgery went very smoothly and I could see a difference immediately the days following the surgery. Healing time was minimal due his excellent surgical skills and he continually and personally followed-up on my condition for the next several months. We couldnt have asked for a better doctor.

If I could give the staff zero I would. My son had a cornea transplant, and 2 days prior to his surgery we were informed that they had not received authorization from the insurance....this was 30 days after scheduling his surgery. I soon found out that they had just submitted the information that morning. The Medical Assistants were rude, and very inconsiderate at his follow up appointment. Turning on bright lights, and speaking loudly...he was in pain from surgery duh.I will complete his last visit in a few weeks and never return to this place again.

Visited Dr. Lewis... the first visit was professional and educational. The second visit was very unprofessional, he was not prepared, the Dr. claimed he couldnt find my sons previous paperwork that was filed in his computer. The second visit was a total failure. When the Dr. claimed he couldnt find his paperwork, he appeared rude, and rushed my son and I out of the office. Im feverishly looking for a competent Doctor thats willing to help my son with his vision. Money 💰 is not an option. We need a #COMPETENTLOWVISIONDOCTOR

I have a complicated eye condition which is exacerbated by the many steroid medications necessary prevent blindness in one of my eyes. In my opinion, the doctors in this clinic are world class and Texans are lucky to have access to high quality services offered by the Alkek Eye Center. Very few people in the U.S. have access to this his quality of treatment. I am very happy to wait as long as it takes to have access to these doctors. I travel 4 hours from San Antonio for my appointments.

Quality eye care, but will not return. Will not wait over 1 ½ hours to see Dr. Poor scheduling and I will not recommend this clinic to everyone. If you do go, take a good book and backup battery for your phone.

If any less start then one, I would have given it. Under-staffed and inexperienced staffed. I took an appointment with MD to check my eye. She cancelled my appointment twice. I had an appointment just for refraction test with a OD, yes OD. Without my asking she did my eye check-up and billed to me as my insurance can only allow an MD to bill for eye check. This OD wanted her practice to go. She is no longer with BCM. BCM is incorrect. You can not complain to anyone. No one cares. I already seeing private doctors. Please do not go to this ophthalmology department. Rude support staff.

Amazing doctors. They gave my father the vision he thought he could never have. Dr. Weikert, Dr. Wang and Dr. Bleiden are simply amazing. They truly are wonderful and have worked wonders. Thank you doctors.

Our experience with Alkek was fantastic. Courteous, professional, and imho the most knowledgeable eye doctors in Texas. Dr. Manuel is great! He knew exactly what to do AND he even took the time to consult with the leading PRK surgeon in the USA, Dr. Koch, about my eyes. Everyone on this entire staff is very kind and helpful. Thank you Dr. Manuel and the entire staff at Alkek Eye Center. Highly recommend.

They take MONTHS in giving you an appointment and once you are there they take an ETERNITY to complete your check up. I spend most of my time in the clinic in the waiting room. I am certainly not going to return again and will take my private medical insurance dollars elsewhere. On top of everything, parking is not free so you end up paying an extra $12 for the privilege of spending the whole day waiting.

You are given an appointment at a specific time but you will never, I repeat never be seen at that time. For some reason the Doctors at the Center seem to believe that no one other than themselves have anything of any importance to do in their lives. The last visit to Alkek was for a ten minute follow up. Three hours later and we were still sitting in their waiting area. Alkek Eye Center is the most unprofessional, poorly run, excuse laden business I have ever experienced. I would tell anyone that asks to not just walk away but run to any other center they can find.

Excellent doctors but a ripoff when renewing a contact lens prescription. They require a contact lens fitting exam even when you already have contact lenses and an eye exam to check your prescription. Even though I only needed one contact lens I paid for the same exam for two contact lenses ($180 which is not reimbursable with insurance). The total cost of renewing yearly contact lenses is $480, not including the cost of lenses.

Most unprofessional handling I have ever experienced. Totally dishonest in getting us there and after 3.5 hours, ready to schedule surgery, they decide they are NOT contracted with our insurance. Even at check in it was fine. These people do NOT HAVE THEIR ACT TOGETHER. do not go here.

Dont waste your time! My first appointment the doctor was running an hour and 15 minutes behind schedule and no one said anything at check in. They dilated my eyes, took pictures and just left me to sit in the waiting room where I happened to see a TV screen in the back with wait times. I ended up leaving after an hour because they said there were still 5 patients ahead of me. I called to reschedule and was told that this long of a wait was not normal and that there doctor I was assigned to see had taken on extra patients to cover for a doctor on maternity leave. I asked to see another doctor to avoid the long wait. Fast forward six weeks. Im back to see another opthalmologist and guess what every doctor on the screen has a wait time over an hour. Im sitting in the waiting room, eyes dilated again but I guarantee you this is my last time here. Save yourself the hassle and find another eye clinic, this place is a terrible waste of time, mediocre staff and terrible customer service.

Ophthalmologists and RN’s are consummate Professionals. However; the admin staff @ pre-op check in & Insurance verification process was a nightmare! Also, a PCA named “Twyla” was extremely rude, had a bad attitude & was most unprofessional. My Mother had cataract surgery on 1-8-18 and “Twyla” spoke in a very curt tone and was unwilling to help. She needs more patient sensitivity training if she’s to continue to interact with the public. She was extremely rude with me and when I brought it to her attention she began praying out loud like a crazy person. This lady needs to be counseled by management on how to professionally and appropriately interact with the public. She’s too OLD to behave in such a juvenile manner & her behavior is not indicative of medical professionals that I have experienced in the past.

As a Baylor College of Medicine employee, I thought it would be more affordable and convenient to be seen by a BCM opthamologist but I was very wrong. Although vision insurance is not provided to BCM students, I was charged $538 for a regular eye exam. That price is outrageous considering I was able to get the same services at Lens Crafters the year before for no more than $250. I will not be going back to the Alkek Eye Center and I advise others to check prices prior to making an appointment.
