A review from my mother…!“Upon arrival at Aspire Hoover, I was warmly greeted and welcome by employees outside as well as by those in the entry area. My room was cleaned on a daily basis. The staff was attentive and prompt when I called them. The food was very good. Best was the therapy I received from my therapist which was terrific, enabling me to be discharged after 14 days (not bad for hip surgery at 77!). Thanks from me and my family for taking such good care of me.”Linda BJune 2021

My dad went in for rehab after a common surgery and because the staff in my opinion was incompetent he came out paralyzed. My dad was walking and driving himself around. Enjoying his retirement. And now he has to have 24 hour care. Paralyzed from the neck down. Because the 3 caregivers THREW him across the bed. This has changed a family’s life forever. People please do not sign these arbitration agreements because when you do there is no recourse for you to be able to sue. DO NOT USE ASPIRE REHAB IN HOOVER ALABAMA. If you love your family member… DO NOT SEND THEM TO ASPIRE REHAB IN HOOVER ALABAMA!!

Was at Aspire for a short rehab. The nursing staff, food, and surroundings were excellent, especially the bathroom facilities in my room. But after having A+ rehab at another facility 10 years ago, this facility sorely missed the mark! Extremely disappointed with the rehab department as a whole!!! Too bad this beautiful facility does not have the complete package.

It was a horrible experience!!! The social worker is impossible to get in touch with. My father was there a month, when he first arrived he had an outside doctors appointment. The doctor asked for the list of all the medication he was on at aspire that the hospital sent to them to make sure they matched his regular medication he has been on for years. We didn’t get a copy of the medicine they were giving him until the day before he was released. He has congestive heart failure and was supposed to have been on a diuretic and he wasn’t at all for the whole month which caused him to swell and have trouble breathing, on top of the fact that they could never get his blood thinner medicine correct either. We would have known they weren’t giving him the medicine he actually needed to live if the social worker had given us a list of the medication they were giving him when he first got there even after many times asking her when we finally could track her down. The nurses said they used to have a great social worker there, but this new one is impossible to get in touch with and never returns phone calls. It could have cost my father his life with the mess up and complete lack of effort of having his medicine corrected. He will not be back there ever nor would I recommend them to any other family member either

How they meet so many different individual needs is a mystery, but they do!The food is wonderful, thanks to Chef Drake, and the accommodations are lovely and so comfortable. The nursing and PT/OT staff are extraordinarily accomplished and immediately attentive. Best of all, every single member of the team, from Andy, Jonathan and Brad at the top throughout the organization, seems to genuinely care about our wellbeing. If I could give negative Stars I would.the general staff that works at this facility have an apathetic, uncaring, neglectful work ethic. Call lights are regularly ignored. My 83 year-old grandmother was a patient here, two days ago she went to the ER and today she had major surgery to try and save her from a life-threatening condition that had developed during her stay at Aspire.Thankfully family was with her at all times, every day while she was at Aspire. My mother was transferred to this facility after having surgery for a shattered femur. The aides were very kind but not trained. They were also understaffed with “medical professionals”. We were with our Mom everyday to feed her meals which she would not eat. My mother went into septic shock, critically ill and the Nurse Practitioner didn’t show up for over 2 hours after we were told she was on her way. When she finally showed up she was very flippant and said she did not know why we were transferring her to UAB as they were not going to do anything more than she was doing, which was giving her a shot of Rocefin. Once transferred to UAB she was in intensive care for 5 days. So glad we didn’t listen to her. My mom eventually passed away. There have been calls made to the director of this facility but NEVER a return call.

I too wish I had read reviews before sending my mother to this facility for rehab. I do NOT recommend it whatsoever due to the epic fail over and over during her one week stay. From a medical care standpoint, I might as well have been admitted along with her to make sure she received the care she deserved. Her PT and OT advances met our expectations and for that, I appreciate the team that worked with her. Our family met with Aspire’s administrator after my mother’s discharge and we walked away with the feeling that all he cared to do was cover their tracks in practically every issue we discussed. Only when filing a formal complaint with the company and speaking with the regional director did we receive any apologies for the many failures on their part.If you have a loved one that needs care, Don’t use Aspire. Until they make changes and create a better action plan from the TOP, DOWN, patients will continue to be viewed as $$ as they come and go. My mother was not treated with basic human dignity in her discharge process and I can only hope that because we spoke up, this won’t happen to anyone else.

First of all - I can say nothing but GOOD about Aspire! So, what is an 80 year old lady from Highlands, NC doing here in Birmingham for rehab on a TKR? A dear friend from Guntersville, Alabama recommended Aspire to me and she has been to both Hoover and Cahaba after TKR - last visit being fall of 2018. So at some personal expense to myself and disruption of our 3 grown children’s schedules, I was able to have Dr. David Moore with the Andrew’ s Ortho Group do surgery on Feb. 25 th. St Vincent’s was exceptional and my oldest daughter brought me to Aspire on Feb. 28th. I had my first PT session that afternoon and I knew I was in the perfect place - for me - that is.The staff - from Victory in Housekeeping to Adam Madison in the front office- is dedicated to serving. They do it with excellence and a happy attitude. My various physical therapists have challenged me as I had wanted to be. They each have their own set of “tricks” and I appreciate each one of them. My husband (89 years) is in great health - but has memory issues and is on Namenda. He has been cared for my our middle daughter in Henrico.NC. Our son will bring my husband on Sunday 3/10 to pick me up and I will return home to my beautiful mountains confident that I might resume my life and continue to improve with therapy at the hospital in Highlands. All this because of my wonderful care at Aspire.

HORRIBLE!!!! My 92 year old Mother recently had a stroke and needed to move to a rehab facility. Our family toured Aspire of Hoover, not only because of its recommendation by Baptist Princeton Hospital, its convenience for our family to visit but also because Mothers best friend is currently a long term resident. We toured, filled out the paperwork, met with the field worker, who also observed Mother, and the hospital staff prepared Mother for the ambulance ride to Aspire. Minutes before we were to leave, the Field Rep called us, not the administrator, to tell us they would require a 24 hour sitter if Mother comes to their facility. We agreed. Minutes later, we were called by the Field Rep, not the administrator, that Aspire of Hoover would not accept her. Basically, my Mother was too much trouble. The Doctors, Nurses, Social workers, Speech Pathologist and our family were shocked at their unprofessionalism. DO NOT USE ASPIRE of HOOVER!

I only wish I had seen the reviews before we took my mom back for rehab after a hospital stay. Three years ago Aspire was excellent. It has obviously changed hands and now places profit ahead of patient care. Here is a summary of our experience: lost medications causing Mom to miss a week’s worth of a prescription(this was reported to them daily); a “diabetic diet plan consisting of high salt, fried foods and pasta; Other than PT and OT no other activities were offered so patient sits alone in room unless a visitor is there to get them out and about; days of pleading for a doctor or equivalent to examine sores in Moms legs to no avail; Friction between staff verbalized to Mom and I on a regular basis; rotating staff including nurses means no one knows the patient and thus you have to re-explain your concerns EVERY DAY-no they must not know how or care to share information; Cold food/ cold coffee to patient; short term rehab patients mixed in with severe Alzheimer patients; one day she was brought another patient’s med but thankfully we caught it. I write this as I sit in an urgent care facility I have taken my mom to after we removed her from Aspire early. Her legs are so Swollen and red they required immediacy attention. FYI, they were neither when she entered the Aspire.PT and OT were excellent though, so if you can stay with your family member 8-15 hours a day to be their advocate you may survive there. But isn’t that basically home health?I end by saying this does not appear to be the staff’s fault. Healthcare professionals care for their patients. I believe this is an upper management problem. We met with them 3 separate times to express our deep concerns and still nothing changed.User PLEASE beware. This is no longer a great short term rehab facility. Aspire needs to rehab their process or “expire.”Update: the urgent care center has just confirmed cellulitis in both legs; exactly what we thought but Aspire has told us for FIVE DAYS is was nothing.

Review №68

My mother in law stayed here in May 2018 for one week as a respite stay while I went out of town. The facility was nice. She liked the food, but they didn’t adhere to her diabetic and cardiac diet. PT was excellent. One PRN nurse (who had just started working there the same day we checked in) was very good. But unfortunately, every other aspect of the stay was messed up: nursing staff didn’t communicate between shifts, the activities director was MIA even though we were promised that she would keep her busy and engaged during the stay, and every time my husband stopped in to see her she was sitting in the dark in her room with the door shut. From check in to check out there were many administrative errors that ranged from simply annoying to life threatening:Example 1: I went there the day before to complete all paperwork, pay the bill, and pave the way for a smooth check in. But when we arrived at the time they told us to get there the next day, nobody knew anything about it! My mother in law was not in the computer and the nursing staff had no idea that she was coming! Her room was not ready and we spent 4 hours waiting for them to get everything ironed out. I had to change my travel plans.Example 2: We paid cash in advance for the week stay, but received a bill for $9800 a few days into the stay! The finance director said, “that’s just the way the billing department does it.” Huh?Example 3: We were told we had to supply her medicines since she was on a respite stay. So imagine my surprise at checkout when they brought us a garbage bag full of pill blister cards that I had never seen before! Upon inquiry, they said that the nurses didn’t know where her medicine box was (even though it was locked in their medicine closet and some of the pills clearly had been dispensed). We couldn’t tell what meds she had been given and what meds she had not received because they hadnt ordered ALL of her meds and meds that were there had uneven quantities used. I’m fairly certain she missed some doses while there. The administrator said that they had ordered medicine for her by mistake and that they would over the cost of the meds. No surprise—they billed her insurance then sent me a bill for $400 in copays. It took me three months, eight phone calls, and two in-person visits to get it resolved. In the meantime, I wasn’t able to get some meds refilled at her regular pharmacy because the insurance company said that she had just been issued new meds and wasn’t eligible for a refill. (The ones we did get I had to pay 100% out of pocket for the same reason). She ended up going a week without some of her medicine while this was being resolved. These are just a few examples of the incompetence and disorganization that seemed to pervade this company. I wouldn’t use this facility again and cannot recommend them to others.

Aspire Physical Recovery Center is a J Norman Estes/Northport Health Services (NHS) operation; as with any business, do your homework, I, myself, found Wilhite v Northport Health Services to be a good read for a starter. My mothers residency at Aspire was comparable to that of the previous reviewer, that is, horrible, one wretched incident after another; the horrendous bruise to her stroke arm was duly reported to the Hoover Police Department by me to evidence the injury as a matter of fact; I dread to think of the pain that such an injury gave her; the response time of CNAs to my mothers needs sometimes ran to an hour and a half; one woman informed me that her husband waited three hours after her initial call before being assisted from his wheelchair into bed; another represented to me, that her mother had gone five days without a bath despite constant complaint to management; finally, based on the belief that she was in a life-threatening situation at Aspire, and, having no confidence in the medical services provided at Aspire, she discharged herself from Aspire and was transported, directly, to Grandview Medical Center by ambulance where, upon evaluation in the emergency room, she was diagnosed with bi-lateral pneumonia.
