My son, 25 years old, fell on his skateboard and broke his wrist soooo bad. It looked deformed. The staff at Medical West ER were fabulous. They were all caring and considerate. Dr. Carson did an amazing job putting him to sleep and resetting his wrist. I’ve had 8 surgeons, doctors and nurses ALL say they couldn’t believe how well he reset the bone. The before and after X-rays are amazing. He could not have gotten the bone any straighter.

Took my 6 year old for an X-ray of his foot and the nurses and doctor (Smith) were amazing! The front desk lady (Morgan) was so kind to my baby; asked him if he was cold and if he wanted a warm blanket! I’ve never had a bad experience here! We were literally in and out within an hour 🙌🏼 10/10 recommend! The ER visit came after waiting at Middle Creek for almost an hour in a room and never even seeing an X-ray tech, doctor or nurse. There were 4/5 people there at the time 😒

Huge shout out to my hubby& to my family for all the prayers !!! Woke up yesterday for work & had a MAJOR headache. Went straight to urgent care. Negative for covid, thank God !!! Then sent for an MRI.The MRI came back all good. But what I was diagnosed with is a hyper tension migraine. They said my old BP meds likely stopped working a while ago. So they put me on a new med & naproxen. Told me no more coffee or caffeine & to get lots of rest & water. This headache didnt subside at all yesterday & got worse. Jim came back from picking up my prescription & found me bawling. He drove me to ER & I had to get IV Tramadol pain meds & fluids (Good stuff). Back home about 11pm.So far so good today 🙌🙏🙌I DO NOT WISH YESTERDAY ON ANYONE 😭BUT THIS ER HELPED ME SOOOOO MUCH !!!

This place is terrible. Everyone moves like turtles and no one cares enough to look into what your issues my be. They just give you a prescription for whatever you say your problem is. They prescribed me a medication that I clearly explained to them that I wasn’t supposed to take. I had to ask for a covid test because they weren’t paying attention to anything that I was explaining to them so one wasn’t offered and on top of that, the bald guy doing the labs had a terrible attitude and was very impatient. I went to Shelby Baptist at first and they had a full house with a 7 hour wait…. This place was completely empty….. I see why.!

I was brought to the ER by ambulance this morning because I couldn’t breathe. I have COVID pneumonia and severe asthma. I ask my Dr. David Fuller what can I do if this should happened again. I thought he was going to give me tips. However, he responded to me by saying, “Get over it”. You do not ever tell anyone who can not breathe to get over it. Hopefully someone would not tell him or his love ones to get over it. Please do not go to this ER! I am reporting Dr. David Fuller.

I went in today with terrible stomach and lower back pain that Ive had for days. We were brought back almost immediately and had a nurse in my room in just a few minutes. The doctor popped in and talked with me and the nurse. Right behind them was another nurse to draw blood and administer pain and nausea meds. Before he was even finished the ultrasound tech was in my room getting set up. Everyone was so fast and efficient. They were also incredibly kind. My test results came back quickly and I was given prescriptions and a referral for a GI. I am amazed at the quality of care I received and will absolutely be back of the need arises.

I have generally had good experiences each time I have come here. However after receiving treatment for a burn I had, I hope that no one ever has to go below Carson Penkava’s care again. He told me my burn was no worse than a sunburn and bragged about how he began working immediately after having second degree burns and thought I shouldn’t need a work excuse (but did end up being provided one Ms Mcannally). I now have severe second degree burns with third degree burns forming around the edges where I was initially burned. I am unable to walk as the burn covers my entire right leg and half of my left. The blisters are larger than I’ve ever seen and my skin feels thinner than paper. However, he did not feel an antibiotic was even necessary. My PCP could not believe he treatment I had received here. He noted that had I received proper treatment at the ER, I could have potentially avoided a lot of life-long scarring I will now have.I will say, every other staff member we experienced was wonderful and the hospital is so clean each time. But quite frankly, Carson is a heartless tool that I would never wish to receive treatment from again.

My 4 year old daughter had a badly gashed chin so we decided to take her here. After nearly two hours, nobody had even looked at it. The triage nurse didn’t even look at it and nobody offered a bandage leaving us to hold a paper towel over it for hours. Sitting there for hours with a child that has an open wound is a disgrace. Health Care Professional is not a word that should be used with anyone associated with this place. Disgusting, ridiculous and shameful.

For an emergency department they sure do act like it’s not an emergency… very rude staff at the lobby. It’s either on their time or they will make you wait as if you need to make an appointment. We had a great experience with regards to actual medical care received. But, I received a bill for services from Bessemer Emergency Physicians, which I paid two weeks after receipt. 8 months later, we are still dealing with them. They sent me notices that I hadnt paid and I provided them a copy of the cleared check. They then sent me another notice of non-payment and I called them. They said they notated my account. Then, I got a letter that we had been turned over to collections for a bill that I have already paid and have a copy of the cleared check. I had to send the check image to that group. We have spent more time dealing with their incompetent billing department than we spent in the facility getting treatment. Again, the medical care was fine, but their billing department could not be more incompetent. I will not be returning despite them being convenient and fast. I picked them because my time is valuable and I didnt want to wait forever. But, the time Ive spent with billing, and the frustration, far outweighs whatever benefit I got from their efficiency at point of care. I do not recommend.

Long story short I was prescribed weak antibiotics for a bad case of pneumonia. My condition worsened even after finishing it I had to go to the emergency room AGAIN! (this time I went to Uab highlands) The Doctor prescribed me good antibiotics where I felt significantly better after 2 doses. The Doctor there said I shouldn’t have been prescribed that for my pneumonia originally. The Doctor who treated me here at medical west provided good care but my recovery time would’ve been cut in half if he sent me home with the correct antibiotics. I’m a student at Uab this break was time supposed to be spent working so I can get my money up.Also unless I’m dying I’m never coming here again I had 3 people in front of me yet it took almost 2 hrs before I saw a doctor. Whereas at highlands there was 10+ people in front of me but I was able to see a doctor within 30min.

I’m an RN at UAB hospital and have been for 10+ years, I took my husband here d/t new onset of hypoxia and dyspnea related to COVID. They didn’t allow visitors so I waited in the car. My husband called me on the phone after 2 hours and said that a nurse practitioner, Jason Watkins, came in and asked what is going on, my husband explained that his oxygen saturation’s have been fluctuating and he had been experiencing SOB the CRNP questioned if he was doing it correctly. He also questioned my husband about his PCP (UAB Inverness) and asked are you sure it’s not grandview. They did complete a chest X-ray which showed COVID PNA. They also did a walk test on my husband which in fact his oxygen saturation’s dropped to 84% with exertion, gave him a prescription for some cough medicine and discharged him. Never once did any medical professional listen to his lung or perform any kind of assessment. Being in the medical profession this is unacceptable and needs to be addressed.

Im just sort of at a loss as to why our nation looks to UAB for medical expertise. Ive never had a good experience at any UAB location Ive gone to since college. On January 1st, I had my friend rush me here because I had COVID and my lips began to turn blue and I was struggling to breathe. CDC says thats a prerequisite for an ER visit, right? Nope. I get there and these young kids treat me like Im overreacting and pull the whole Its just COVID bedside manner and send me off. Luckily, the young doctor prescribed me Promethazine, a Z-Pack, and Albuterol, all of which I absolutely believe were instrumental in my recovery.Flash forward to last week, and Id had gushing nosebleeds for 4 out of the previous 7 days. Since Id had a lot of pain around my kidneys during COVID and frequent nosebleeds are apparently a sign of kidney damage, I wanted to make sure I wasnt letting that fester. I went back here only because the urgent care around the corner told me to and said they didnt have the equipment to do the tests that would need to be done. I get to the ER and wait for 2 1/2 hrs. No biggie. I figured it would be a while so I even brought a book. When they took my blood pressure when I got into the room, it was 140/93. As a woman in her mid-30s who isnt obese and has no other underlying conditions, I thought it looked high but wasnt sure. I asked the doc if it was, and he said it was normal. (By the way, anything over about 75 for the lower number is too high...) I asked about the kidneys possibly being messed up and once again, the genius doctor said, in essence, Its just COVID.I had one young kid, one middle-aged woman, and a male doctor all looking at me like a lab rat and the guy just nonchalantly said it was normal and to basically just deal with it. Then, the woman comes over and just touches my back and stomach a little and asks me, What are those? to some ingrown hairs under my eyebrow. I mean.... Youre the medical professional and you dont even know what an ingrown hair looks like? That inspires a lot of hope. I also asked her about my left shoulder thats been in pain for a month and a half. It started after taking a medicine that causes a spike in uric acid. I asked her about getting a test to verify it was gout since my grandpa had it, my dad has it, my aunt has it.... You get the idea. She told me, Youre too young to have it. Its probably a rotator cuff issue. First of all, I know its gout because my dad was diagnosed with it before my age, as was my aunt. Secondly, Ive already had it in my right hip for a month or so in 2017 and it is the same exact feeling. I wasnt asking her to diagnose me; I already knew the cause. I wanted it to be in my records so I could get treatment in the future...They sent me home after 10 mins of asking some mindless questions. Guess what? My nosebleeds are more frequent now and I feel woozy and exhausted and worse than when I actually had COVID. Youd think that since we now know that COVID damages blood vessels IN THE BRAIN that a nosebleed would be a little more concerning and you might want to do some tests instead of just telling me my mucous membranes are inflamed or whatever. God knows how much money Im now going to be paying for two visits to these people. Oh, and apparently if they have to rush you to a hospital from here, they take you to Bessemer. They mentioned that like 8x. I guess they thought I was concerned about the demographic of the other patients? It was just weird how adamant they were that I might want to go to Grandview down the road to keep away from Bessemer.Long story short, I have an appointment on 1/25 with a PCM and Im requesting an MRI. If I get one and something substantial was causing those nosebleeds, I wouldnt be the least bit surprised.

Dr. Kaira King was probably one of the rudest doctors I have ever met. Me and my husband went to have a covid test the nurse came in swabbed me for flu and covid and then mrs king came in to tell me “I don’t take the virus seriously” and “if I cared anything about my 1Year old daughter that I wouldn’t be around her” and even after swabbing me she says “ I am not testing your swab. We are not a testing sight” but told my husband his test was positive.... the cdc and medical board will be hearing from me Monday. Usually impressed with this place; all it takes is one bad apple to ruin it. This one nurse was so rude. Because of COVID19, my daughter had to go in by herself. When my daughter asked to call to run the info by her parents, the nurse rolled her eyes, and acted disgusted when we asked to speak directly with her. Daughter asked her why/what concerning an IV they wanted to administer and the nurse was irritated at being asked. Overall impatient and rude. Would never have acted that way if an adult were in there. A bully/jerk should never be allowed to be in the medical profession.

Dr. Denny is a terrible doctor. If you have him you might as well diagnose yourself. I went in for abdominal pain and vomiting for the 3rd time in 6months. He tried to convince me it was viral. I advised him that it wasn’t and something was wrong with my gallbladder. He spent 5 minutes trying to convince me that the ER could not do a test to determine if something was wrong with my gallbladder, which was a complete lie. I don’t think he knew about my BS in Biology and acceptance into Nursing School. Finally he ordered an ultrasound. The ultrasound tech was really nice and informative. She was so surprised that they hadn’t ordered the test before because as she put it “they love ordering test around here”. Not sure if it was because I’m black or what; he didn’t want to order the ultrasound. Anyways, guess what the ultrasound found? I have gallstones and it wasn’t viral. The doctors at this hospital just like to treat symptoms and send you on your way. They could careless about the cause.

If the doctor and others would take the time to read the documentation patients are asked to complete you would have seen her reason for visiting in black and white- white paper with black inked writing. The rude female doctor then asked again, “How do they both go together ?” My mom said, “They are both happening that’s what I mean. Quick. Professional. Nice.. Very clean and neat. I read the positive reviews but was still apprehensive. Its not over rated. They got me straight back, Dr was right in. I felt like a person at the front desk and not just a number.

A few years ago, I went here and had a pretty decent experience. I wasn’t blown away by my nurse, but the doctor was great and the service was pretty quick. The most recent time I went it was a terrible experience. I had passed out at home, was having bad abdominal pain, and I was shaking like crazy. After Dr King asked me several times if I was using stimulants like Adderall (which I have never taken), she diagnosed me generalized anxiety. I told her I didn’t feel like she was listening to me at all. She didn’t lay a single finger on me one time, let alone palpate my abdomen. She did a urine screen, dismissed me as having anxiety, and sent me home. My nurse was wonderful and apologized for the doctor several times. I could tell he was used to trying to make up for her, and it also seemed like he was frustrated and embarrassed by her complete lack of care. I went home and when my appendix ruptured 7 hours later, I went to Brookwood and had a much better experience. This was a complete waste of a lot of money, let alone several hours in agonizing pain.

This facility was awesome! I went to another ER first and waited in the waiting room for about 45 mins (the lady sitting next to me had been waiting for 3 hours) and then I remembered hearing about Medical West so I decided to leave there and go to Medical West. So glad I did! The whole staff was very kind and professional. The facility was very neat and clean. I walked in at 8:30pm and walked out at 9:15pm. The NP and the Dr. were both very kind and made sure I was taken care of! I will for sure be going back to Medical West if I ever need to visit the ER again, hopefully I wont! Thanks again for the outstanding care and service!

Prepare for rude staff and expensive tests. I personally will never use them again. Hoover urgent care is the way to go! The doctors there are much more personable and the staff are all amazing! Also, if you have UAB insurance this is not really part of UAB system the $0 copay definitely doesn’t apply nor do any of the other normal breaks for using UAB system; nor do the support staff have UAB training in greeting guests.

If i could give 0 stars I would . If you are young avoid this place. I have gone multiple times before for extreme pain ( have multiple cronic illnesses) and always treated like a druggie told myself I would never go back but I did today. (Its 5 minutes away from my house) I was having a allergic reaction to my medication .heavy breathing and every part of my body turned red. The doctor takes one look at me and said I dont look red (all he did was look at my arm ) and that was it. Talked to me like I was crazy and seeking drugs. I started crying because he was extremely rude and talking down to me and I was having a panic attack. I asked him why he was giving me medicine if he thought nothing was wrong, he said you dont want it you can refuse it. I dont know why your upset .you can get it from the drug store , we will get your paperwork and you can go home. Was extremely rude and talking to me like I was trash. Will not be going again.

Before talking to a doctor I was ordered a $3,000 CT scan. When the doctor finally got around to seeing me she told me nothing was wrong. She didnt even give me a physical examination just wrote a subscription for something that I quit taking bc they werent relieving any pain. They do not care about your welfare they only care about how much money they can squeeze out of you

They were outstanding! Quick (didnt even sit down), pleasant, attentive, professional. Plan on making this my go to ER. Forget the hours and hours in the waiting room at St.Vincents and Brookwood. And if you do need to be admitted to the hospital you pick which hospital, it doesnt have to be UAB. Great jobs guys!

I went to Medical West today with the worst migraine (or possibly cluster headache) of my life. I waited in pretty much unbearable pain for about 3 hours. I was given medication that didnt work, was offered other meds that upon my own personal experience and at that same facility hasnt worked in the past and sent home still in agonizing pain. I have migraines on a very regular basis. I seek emergency treatment for one approximately once every 2 to 3 years. If Im at the emergency room with pain its bc its an emergency. My treatment was poor at best. Neglectful, definitely. It was obvious no one took the time to review my chart and I only actually saw the doctor after I requested to speak with her. Which was after medications were given and only moments before I left when I realized they had no intention of listening to me or actually helping with my pain. I highly recommend any other facility, especially if it has to do with a similar situation as mine.

Came in with second degree burn to my right knee. Commercial Hot Glue at 400 degrees. The staff was nice but no help. gave me a prescription for pain pills and antibiotics. They looked at my knee which was covered with hardened HOT GLUE, and said I needed to go to the UAB Burn Center, but they close in 5 minutes, and dont reopen until 8am.Was told they could not remove the glue and the Burn Center would need to do it. Since the Burn Center was closed, I went home in terrible pain.I did call UAB ER downtown, The receptionist at the ER told me no one from the burn unit was they and would be back Friday morning at 8pm and to come in then. At that point I should have just gone to a different hospital, but the pain was so bad I couldnt think. KEEP IN MIND THE HARD SHELL OF GLUE IS STILL STUCK TO MY KNEE. I waited until 8am and went to UAB ER. Just to be told by the burn staff we are here 24-7, and UAB West Dr. should have called and sent me straight to the ER downtown. So I will never go back.

Avoid this place like the plague! Went in for nausea they diagnosed it as a UTI… Not even remotely close. Everyone on staff was rude. Was charged $400 when I walked in the door when I expressed that I did not have the money to cover the $400 they said no problem you can’t leave the room until we get your discharge papers and you’ll be good to go. 20 minutes later still sitting in the room a doctor comes into the room diagnosis me after I told him the same thing. He then has the nerve to diagnose me with a UTI… I came in for nausea you idiot! Then these people have the nerve to send me a bill for the $400 which they told me I wasn’t going to be charge because they weren’t going to see me, then they have the nerve to charge me for a diagnostic fee on top of that as well as labs. When I have called repeatedly about the bill they refuse to call me back, then 2 weeks later they give me a call just to let me know there is nothing they can do about the bill and I should have been smart enough to know that emergency rooms are only for real emergencies and nausea really doesn’t qualify for that, but since I walked through the door, here’s your bill. This place is nothing but a group of scam artist. They don’t care about patience nor do they care about trying to diagnose you. You have better luck going to a vet! I am already letting everyone I know no about my experience and if you read this, please spread the word as fast as you can.

I WILL NEVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE GO THERE AGAIN! I went there and describes my symptoms to the ER doc and the first that she asked was “Well, how do you know that it’s not a regular cold?” 🤦🏽‍♀️ “I’m not trying to say that you’re not sick or anything!” What in the world woman? Have you lost your mind? She proceeded to tell me that she could not treat me. I guess because she didn’t that that I was “sick.” She told me to take some Claritin-D. When I finished to check out, I found out that my co-pay was $200! I went to MedCenter in Hoover across from Publix and they were wonderful. They gave me steroids, antibiotics, and nasal spray. They found that I had an ear infection and a bad sinus infection. They washed me ears out to thoroughly check them. To put the icing on the cake,my co-pay was only $20. Please do not go here for any service. DO NOT GO HERE ESPECIALLY NOT FOR YOUR CHILD!

I have been here twice, once for my son and once for myself. During my son’s visit, the doctor had NO bedside manner and spoke about things in front of our son that she had NO right to talk about. During my visit, the nurse was great (same one, Jason) but again the doctor was rude and said about seven words to me and left. Terrible. Then the bills from the physician not the ER started coming. The office staff were friendly but they were not up front about billing. I paid 150 for the visit then started receivino more bills from the doctor not the ER.Yeah, the place was clean, but the way the doctors conduct themselves trump that. We will not be going back to this clinic. Do yourself a favor; pass this place and head to the hospital.

Ive been seen there twice within the last two weeks and each time I received excellent care. In my experience, (yours may vary) I went up to the registration desk, told the reception nurse my problem(s) and was immediately taken back to a ROOM! I never even saw the waiting area except as I was passing by it on my way to the back.Once in a room, I was seen by a nurse within minutes. On both occasions I saw a doctor very quickly and on my most recent visit was put through a battery of tests (chest x-ray, Doppler imaging of the veins in my lower extremities, EKG, IV blood draw, chest CT scan and IV meds) all within 4 hours time. Each person who provided me care was very friendly and accommodating. On my last visit, Dr. Patel was the physician on-call and his bedside manner and kindness were amazing. This is the ONLY ER Ill go to from now on if I have the choice, No long waits, no rude staff. Only professionals giving the best in healthcare services.

Took my husband to the ER with terrible foot pain. Before we could sit down, we were assisted by a very sweet nurse at the front desk, taken immediately to a room where we were met in the hallway by the nurse that helped him during his visit. The Dr. came directly in and they had him pain meds, X-rays, a diagnosis and the prescribed meds he needed to get well and we were out the door in a total of 45 minutes! I was very impressed and appreciate the excellent and very helpful and friendly staff!
